Why Samuel Doe Staged a Bloody Coup in 1980
April 12th, 1980, stands as a significant turning point in Liberia's history, known as Africa's first republic. On this day, Master Sergeant Samuel Doe orchestrated a bold coup d'état in Monrovia, overthrowing President William R. Tolbert Jr.'s government and reshaping Liberia's trajectory forever.
This pivotal event not only destabilized Liberia politically but also reverberated across the region, ushering in a new era fraught with both hope and uncertainty. Some saw it as the inevitable removal of an entrenched 'oppressive regime', others as a 'retro- grade action'.
In this episode of African Biographics, we explore the circumstances that paved the way for this momentous occasion, uncovering a multifaceted landscape characterized by social upheaval, economic disparity, and political disillusionment. These factors together made Samuel Doe and his associates to seize power.

18:00 this was actually the origin of the term "third World" , that is to say, the non-aligned movement of which he was one of the founding member along with India and Indonesia, but he started the whole thing, it was about political allegiance, not economic development. While video is very good, there are several mistakes. For example The Brotherhood was actually involved in the coup against the king, the shot actually hit Abdel Nasser while he was giving a speech in Alexandria it did not miss, it was broadcasted nationally and his reaction is what made him a Hero in the public eye, in addition there's some confusion about how much of the military Gamal actually had control over, there were several power struggles and even coup attempts like in 1962 with the man who actually had the loyalty of the military Abdel Hakim Amer, in addition, he did not just find a ploy to shift public opinion in 67', that was always his goal from the get go, there were no preparations for a secret strike, as the diplomatic cables show, Lyndon Johnson did not authorize a strike because there were no threat, indeed in 67' about a third of the military was stationed in Yemen, the only thing Gamal did back then that was counted as provocation was the closing of the Tiran Straits in response to aggression on the natives of the occupied territories. He was also seminal in the liberation of Algeria, Iran from their Monarchies and he was opposed by the Monarchies in the gulf that were placed there by the British, even the Moroccan monarch betrayed him. The jordanian monarchy as well betrayed him twice.

    > immediately begins the video by blaming the "seeds of discord planted by colonial powers" You've already failed at providing an honest explanation. The idea that colonialism is to blame for all of Africa's problems is a comfortable lie but the bitter truth is that reconciliation is not possible without accountability. I have enjoyed your other videos but now I have my doubts on the veracity of them.

Lets reflect for a minute, who are the MAIN beneficiaries of the vast mineral deposits in DRC? To a large extent it is not African states. We Africans have made propaganda the norm so as to believe whatever lies that are propagated our way. There are economies outside of Africa that thrive immensely on Africa's instability.
