How Captain Ibrahim Traoré Captured Burkina Faso

  • In September 2022, Burkina Faso suffered its second coup in less than nine months. Then 34-year-old army captain, Ibrahim Traore, seized power, ousting Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba, who led a coup in January of that year, toppling former President Roch Kabore.
Justifying why they were removing Damiba from office, Traore said in a televised address on October 1, 2022 that the embattled head of state had failed to tackle the perennial problem of insurgency that has been hitting Burkina Faso in recent years.
When he was named as the leader of the coup plotters, certain observers pointed out his resemblance to Thomas Sankara. In addition to the red beret, Ibrahim Traoré -has several points in common with the national icon: both are captains, both came to power at the age of 34, and both are perpetrators of a coup against the military, which had itself come to power by force eight months earlier…

This young man is showing courage that's truly inspiring. I love his idealism and committment to his country's struggles. Reminds me of revolutionaries like Thomas Sankara. But I hope they will learn to move pragmatically as well. For example, they really could use allies with superior military technology. If they can no longer trust France, then at least try China, Turkey or India. Ethiopia's army for instance, took care of it's recent civil war using advanced military technology assistance from China, even though the government's army was outnumbered. Good diplomacy with their neighboring countries also helped. As countries in East Africa and the Horn of Africa quickly moved in to help with international advocacy, negotiations and military support. That's what Burkina Faso needs at the moment. I don't think they should antagonize France unnecessarily as the French government could just as easily arm their enemies. Just cultivate other effective allies besides Russia, because Putin has his hands full with a war that is not going in his favor.
Anyway, good luck to Burkina Faso and I hope this young leader is the ace that'll finally lead them to a period of peace and stability.

Very insightful. I agree, he should make logical moves and get as many allies as possible, he has cards he could play so it’s possible. I’m Kenyan and I love that African leaders like him and Kagame have managed such success. I just hope Kenya produces a similar leader as well, the president we have now is a puppet of western influence, he supports Israel and is being used by western leaders like a damn dog while Kenyan people are getting financially chocked by the brutal hands of corruption. He’s made a series of horrible economic decisions, raised taxes to be unsustainable, drove out foreign investors and has done nothing to stop public looting of millions of dollars by government officials. Our taxes are being used everyday by those foolish politicians to finance their lavish lifestyles, and expensive cars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. We used to be a flourishing economy, Kenya used to be a land of opportunity. Yet the Kenyan people are too timid to start a revolution and enact change, colonial mindsets still have us by the b@lls. Anyway I’m thankful some Africans are waking up to reality. We have the resources, culture, population and size, we’re very much capable of being a super power. I will do my part in realising this dream, I hope everyone else does too

@@yesssboss2219 I was trying to say as a single person and not a group, if you want to talk about Taliban then I would tell you that I will not discuss with anyone about Taliban if what they know about them is what they heard and not what they have experienced first hand, it’s a big chapter so to answer you question what I think about them is what I know about them. They are people that suffered and bled for years and still came out victorious like lions, real men.

Having lived in Nigeria thru the 80s and 90s, I find it NAIVE IN THE EXTREME to place your faith in a military government. Almost nowhere in the world has military rule led to better things for the proletariat!
Even if Traore is well meaning, now that taking power by force of arms is legitimized, what happens when the next ambitious Captain decides to take power from him, the likelihood is that the next regime will have more in common with Sani Abacha than Jerry Rawlings.
Military rule never ends well! From Napoleon to Pinochet.. from Burma to Greece, it's always the same story when soldiers take power.
