WT - Beginner's Guide: Making Sense of the User Interface

  • In this guide I take a fresh look at War Thunder's current User Interface, I show where to find important settings and features, how Matchmaking works, how to set Crew Skills and last but not least, how to configure your controls for Mouse Aim with Keyboard.
    (This replaces an old and considerably out-dated video that was probably confusing new users rather than helping them).

    Miss your videos Longshot. I've been playing WT for several years now for which you deserve credit. The grind and "economy" of WT would have stopped me from playing long ago. With your help I still manage to enjoy a few matches and earn enough silver lions to keep progressing. Nobody does arcade videos, wish you still did. I will be watching your old stuff again. Hope you are doing well in 2022!

      Hey Eddy, I don't plan on making more videos anytime soon I'm afraid. I recently came back to play WT and only managed one game, which I didn't find enjoyable due to the toxic attitudes of some players, and the fact the game's no better than it was years ago. It's the same old, and it doesn't make me feel good playing it, instead I just feel like a bastard. That, and "real life" keeping me busy just paying the bills, mean that I won't be coming back in the foreseeable future.

    here to pay respects to the king
    i started playing in 2015, and your videos taught me how to play how to play air arcade. before i found this channel, i was absolutely awful; i couldn't aim, fly, or win. after i found this channel... that was still the case for a while lol. but then i kept trying to apply what i saw in your videos, and i slowly got better. and better. 1000 hours in, i was good enough to switch to air rb. i sucked all over again, but as i grinded my way to the top of the tech tree, i rode that learning curve, too. 4500 hours in now, and i can carry matches and take on 1v5's (and occasionally win them). they've added all sorts of crazy new stuff over the years, but everything i learned here is the foundation of the skill i have in this game today.

I climbed in a LaGG to 4000m, had my usual fun shooting down bombers and rope-a-doping a 3-man clan that insisted on trying to climb at me. And after the game was over, I got the usual abuse from one of the clan members saying my methods ruined the game, took all the fun out of it, that I was nothing but a spawn-camper, blah blah. You're really starting back at the basics again, but honestly, when I start a new game like this, the interface can be so confusing. Videos like these should be practically included with the game itself so you can get a feel for it.
    As a side note, when using the preset 'Color Correction' modes, Contrast is my preferred because it really makes the colors pop out, but it also makes night maps incredibly dark and difficult to see (moreso than usual). You can nullify this by setting it back to 'normal' (this can be done in-game) for a better view, or you can give yourself rudimentary night vision by setting it to 'Fall' or 'Sepia' (I personally use the latter).

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety +1

      I was actually in a night mission not long ago, and the settings I showed there worked very well - could still see what was going on & pick out dots etc.
      I've been putting off doing this (and the next) video, they feel more like housekeeping rather than creating something new, but it has to be done!

  • @KeyResults
    @KeyResults Před 7 lety +5

    Well done long5hot! Very well done. This was so overdue for all the poor slobs like me trying to reconcile current interface and control options. All the veterans may have it all figured out, but the future of the game depends on new blood and need help exactly like this from some of the respected veterans. Thanks so much for this helpful update. I cannot wait for the next installment you mentioned. I am hoping that you spend a little bit of time helping us to sort out the sensitivity and control percentages for ourselves and how one goes about doing that with their equipment. DPI for example seems to be something that some mention, but I’m not sure how much or if that even matters. Thanks again. Another virtual pint or two for you!

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety +2

      A higher DPI will make the mouse more accurate, and usually mean you have to lower your settings otherwise it'll be too sensitive. The WT Aim Sensitivity setting is obviously affected by your mouse settings outside of the game, hence I can't just tell everyone "set it at 40%" (or whatever value) as it really will be different for each player from an equipment point of view, let alone their individual preferences.

    • @KeyResults
      @KeyResults Před 7 lety

      long5hot Thanks for the reply. While it makes sense that individual user system mouse hardware and driver settings alter the settings used in WT or any other game I suppose, I realize there is no one size fits all settings. However, what I suspect is so challenging for us newbs is trying to intelligently adjust and assess in a positive way and knowing we are more right than wrong with the settings.
      I guess what I’m after may not exist, but ideally there would be a method sequence or process to help each of us find our individual sweet spot. How to recognize when we’ve gone too far in our control sensitivity or axis settings. Not everyone is looking for instant gratification. Some of us just don’t have enough time right now to guess and guess again. We’d much rather be flying sorties! I don’t mind being bested by other Pilots more skilled or with better planes. But I really hate wondering if it’s because I’m unwittingly handicapped out of the gate because of my is under or over achieving for me.
      I get the trial and error for fine adjustment, but where are the points of diminishing returns? Hints and nudges are SO appreciated as always. Ah, I guess I’m rambling now. I hope this makes sense. In any case, you and several others, have had such a huge positive effect on so many of us. Thanks again.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety +2

      Well, all I can do is describe how I tuned my own aim sensitivity. First of all, I left my windows mouse settings untouched - I have it so that I can sweep the mouse from one corner of the screen to the other in a single smooth movement over about 10cm of travel.
      In WT I fired up a custom battle against AI bots, then tested to see how far the cursor was traveling when I made similar movements. I didn't want it moving that far on the screen as sharper turns with the plane are better handled by the keyboard anyway, instead I wanted it traveling roughly half the distance from the center to the edge of the screen with an average movement of my mouse. I dropped into Control Settings, tweaked it, back to the game etc until it was ok.
      Then I experimented with shooting at biplanes - was the mouse moving too sharply causing the reticle to bounce around, or was it too slow & I was missing shots as a result? More fine-tuning until it was right. Lastly, doing the same but testing using zoom as I made my attacks, and adjusting the zoom camera sensitivity. All in all, it didn't really take long.

    One minor correction - the 6.0/2.3/2.3 lineup at 10:35 won't even drop your "average" to 5.7, it will stay at 6.0. Using vehicles 2.0 or further apart replaces their BRs for calculation with the top BR, so the game sees that as a 6.0/6.0/6.0 lineup. If the difference was less than 2.0, like a 6.0/5.0/4.7 lineup, then the 5.0 and 4.7 would be replaced with (top - 0.7), or 5.3 in this case. So the game sees that as a 6.0/5.3/5.3 lineup, which does average down to 5.7.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety

      Patches my understanding was that it will only average by a maximum spread of .7.... If you have one 6.0 and two 2.3 planes, it would average between 6.0, 5.3 and 5.3 rather than all 6.0. to the extent I've been able to test it, that's been accurate but in practical terms its not that different than what you'd stated. it's been a while since I'd looked that up, but I don't believe its changed.

      @dr.michaelr.foreman2170 Před 6 lety

      I found it easier to just pull your crew out of any tier 5 vehicles (air or tank) and put them no higher then tier 4. I learned this the hard way playing tanks. Say I want to upgrade or just bought a newly introduced tier 2 or tier 3 tank or plane. If I have crews in tier 5, I will find my new tier 2 or tier 5 vehicle going up against tier 5 vehicles. Not very fair or very practical. By pulling my crews out of a higher tier, I can now use my new vehicle at a more fair level. You see a lot of You Tubers who simply send all their crews on a holiday, and only have crews in the vehicles they are using. So you see they only have two or three crews going at whatever tier they are trying out for their video. That way, all your crews are at 3.0 or whatever, and you are playing only against equal tiers. Taking a 2.7 vehicle out and battling BR 9.0 is not fun at all.

    I got into WT at least a few times since 2014 but left after BR 4.0. The gameplay was just too imbalanced and atmosphere toxic.
    They still have not done anything about Spawn camping. You end up playing players with BR 5 or 5.3 in a BR4.0 plane.
    One would play a game to wind down but end up being more wound up and tense than before.

    I didn't realize how much using mouse aim only was such a handicap! No wonder all the enemies I fight nowa days always stall like bricks because of how linear the mouse aim is... The key binds really do open up the full potential of your plane. I wish it was the default setting so that new players aren't as disadvantaged

The unfortunate thing about console it the controls are horrible without a keyboard or joystick. It makes manoeuvres like rope a dopes and climbing spirals very challenging if not impossible. Most console players lean towards turn fighters because of this.

    Have you ever thought of doing a video on how to play a game when you've lost control of high altitude? It'd be something extremely useful especially in the (more than common) situation where all your friendlies give up on ascending because the enemy team has a bunch of Bf109s that climbed higher than them.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety +7

      Yep I've thought about it several times over the years, never actually done it - its about time I did!

    • @Blitzcreeper239
      @Blitzcreeper239 Před 5 lety

      Long5hot is dormant, I'm no veteran, in fact I'm level 15 but here's what I do.
      When you are outnumbered at high altitude, chances are they are experienced pilots so you have to dive or die. Stay on the half of the map closer to the fighter spawn, you're gonna want to identify where furballs are and dart in from the side and dart out towards your fighter spawn. The fighter spawn will be an insurance policy, but don't rely on it.
      You'll basically be Boom and Running, faster planes such as the Yaks, 109s and 190s have the advantage in safety from speed, turn fighters such as Zeroes, Spitfires and Hurricanes have the advantage in better angle opportunities in furballs. Reason you Boom and Run as opposed to zoom is because the high flying aces will begin to boom and zoom when air supremacy at altitude has been attained(for them) and the highest plane will be the highest priority.
      This brings me to the most important point, keep your head on a swivel and keep track of which plane is at where and which altitude(easiest to gauge when they are vertically above), when closure increases, evade with a break(split S or downward Chandelle if you somehow have the altitude) or face them and snap roll. In fact, if you have the advantage in armament, facing them headon gives more favourable 50-50 odds, it may even frighten more careful players such as Long5hot and myself, who typically don't hold headons against certain planes.
      Cover your teammates even if they don't cover you, most furballing players have tunnel vision and are unlikely to see and evade diving fighters, try to catch them in the zoomclimb or in the dive if your aim, ping and hit detection favours you. Do not follow them for too long(break off before you drop below 300) but you may perform low yoyos to increase the time you can shoot. More experienced players may now keep an eye on you after realizing you are shooting them in zoomclimbs, but as long as you have safety in numbers, they will have a hard time attacking you too.
      If the supremacy advantage is minor, you can try to climb up to altitude later into the match to turn the match around, when they decend to 2-3k m alt to pick on the furball.

    • @gordcross1266
      @gordcross1266 Před 2 lety

      @@Blitzcreeper239 I used to try and get some separation from spawn camped enemy planes. Then side climb attempting to regain alt advantage. Rarely works since matches end so fast (10 minutes avg). Not much chance of turning the tide anyway if there's multiple campers. I just started playing again after 1 year hiatus. I will give your method a try.

    • @Blitzcreeper239
      @Blitzcreeper239 Před 2 lety +1

      @@gordcross1266 I think the current meta may have changed, I've moved to RB but Arcade is still good fun. The most important thing I've learnt that is new, which I'd have never learnt from long5hot is that you can't always get your energy advantage so you really gotta bite the bullet and just pick on the low altitude furball while keeping an eye on those at high altitude - if they come for you, you can try to force an overshoot since they've got the energy advantage.

  • @yourhandlehere1
    @yourhandlehere1 Před 5 lety

    Thank you sir. Some of those camera controls were my main concern. I just got a computer that would handle these games well, it's 9 years old but a little overpowered for it's time I think. I can play arcade on "movie" and get 72 or more fps and lag doesn't seem to be a problem though my internet isn't the best. Maybe they also "match" you with crappy internet. So far it seems a joystick kind of sucks in arcade. I've been doing better with the mouse but couldn't see worth a hoot. Into the 30's on kills and just found the crew skills stuff.
    Anyway...I've only got a few hours into it, this will help immensely.

    Nice video longshot, great advice for new players there. Just one thing i thought i should point out is that "aim control sensitivity" doesnt affect the speed the plane manoueveres at all and is actually related to mouse aim sensitivity when using a controller.

    • @DrkDeath5000
      @DrkDeath5000 Před 7 lety

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety +1

      Ok that's very interesting - thanks for pointing it out. I'll run more tests, I'm not convinced that its doing nothing for "normal" mouse aim. I could easily have imagined what I saw, but I know others who've tested it and seen a difference as well.

    • @DrkDeath5000
      @DrkDeath5000 Před 7 lety

      No problem and i can understand how you might have to that conclusion. Unfortunately its one of those settings that you never fully understand until you plug a controller in and see for yourself but i can assure you its purely for adjusting mouse aim sensitivity for use with a controller/joystick, specifically the x and y controller axis you assign and doesnt affect "normal" mouse aim in the slightest. There is a lot of miss information going around regarding this setting so i hope this clears it up.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety +1

      It'd be really nice if they just labelled the setting "aim sensitivity for controller" and the other one "aim sensitivity for mouse", that'd clear up any confusion. Ah well.

    Did you switch the'W' and 'S'? I think I saw that you had reversed those? I prefer 'W' for 'up' and 'S' for 'down'.By default it is the opposite.
    Agree on the backup of your settings as there are some parts of the Controls editing that are a 'one way trip'. You can't go back. Have had to reset to default a few times and set everything up again. Save that config!
