Ammo Types in War Thunder Explained - RELOADED | War Thunder Tank Shells Guide

- Welcome to the remastered Tank Ammo Guide. In this video, I explain every tank shell in the game, from the most common to the most obscure, to even ones that aren't classified in-game. There are a whole bunch of different shells, and it's easy to get confused about them. That's why I spent a lot of time explaining how they work in detail and provided 3D animations to help you understand how they work. If anything's unclear or you need more information, don't hesitate to leave a comment. Once again, massive thanks to the War Thunder Wiki for providing a lot of info. The video wouldn't have been possible without all the contributors. Check it out here: wiki.warthunder.com/Tank_ammu...
I definitely should've started working on this video earlier, but hey, ammo types part 7. Or is it technically 3.5?

Thank you all for 50k subscribers! - Hry
Updated information will go here as they come, in the meantime, thank you all for 50k
Thanks lad. Watched the first video a month ago, and this is a welcome upgrade now that I'm on another "War thunder" interest phase
Great video but you’ve forgotten about the short fin stabilised sabot found primarily on Soviet tanks
You forgot the PELE-T round on the gripen AHHHHH
Gripen is a tank!!
My left ear liked it
Only OGs now he already made one 4 years ago
Gaijoob decided to add a bunch of new shells, so you know I had to make a reloaded version 😎
“Only ogs now”
@@skDoger I remember watching your OG ones. (If I remember correctly, there were 2.) And now the rounds have honestly changed quite a bit like the HESH.
I remember…! These memories when I didn’t know how the game worked :)
I remember it
Im just glad its a legit high quality and informative video posted on today, the day of clickbait and lies
Only the best for my viewers

Unfortunately, a lot of the information is very inaccurate, sometimes borderline incorrect
visuals improved seriously
I was expecting this to be some sorta April fools thing with whacky info but instead it's just a very well put together guide. My expectations have been pranked.
Even though SAM is not explained here, I think it's worth noting the Starstreak is probably the only APHEFSDS missile in the entire game, since it launches 3 guided darts with around 450 grams of explosive material inside them.
Sabot sold separately (does not exist)

I literally just watched your previous shell guides 30 mins ago, this is crazy
So quick thing, APC shells do NOT normalize, this is a myth. The purpose of the cap is to slow the round down on impact to prevent the shell shattering at high speeds.
Youre correct. However, skdoger is also correct. There are different types of those caps with different effects.
In terms of gameplay however, it's not wrong to assume that all APC shells normalize, as the shatter protection caps fell out of favor soon after WW1 due to needing low armor angles to have any impact, as well as improved metallurgy negating the effect of those shatter protection caps with tougher armor.
@@fabians7751 "In terms of gameplay however, it's not wrong to assume that all APC shells normalize"
It is wrong though. Out of all the basic AP types (uncapped sharp nose, capped sharp nose, uncapped blunt nose), capped rounds have generally the worse slope modifiers at higher angles.
@@fabians7751Unfortunately this is not true, the APC shells in the game do not normalise against armour. They actually dig in and travel with the angle of the armour, not against it like you would to normalise.
This is typical of a lot of APC shells
This is a Yakuza moment of all time
Used this video to write a essay for my friend to learn war thunder (he doesnt learn visually so the video wouldnt have stuck). So happy to see a new version released since its also good background noise
i watched this for over 10 minutes before i realized it was an april fool's joke lmao
Very elaborate April Fool's joke hehe
@@skDogerwas the joke you never upload I don’t get it :/
@@skDogerwhat is the joke
Even if this was a Jk, its Useful to Know how new shells works
I sent the old one to all of my friends, but now, i need to send them that.
Thx for the video, it made my life way easier to explain to my friends who just started playing. 😊
Yes. Trying to teach a friend
The thing is is that this is stuff I already know, but it gets my nerdy little tank brain all exited to see it all explained and laid out perfectly in a video.
The sequel we all needed, thank you
man i remember watching your video 4 years ago when i was so into war thunder, recently got back into it and im glad youre still doing well!!
Great job man, you’ve perfectly mixed realism with WT.
my gf just started playing this game, love you man
like literally the day you uploaded it
I subscribed because of your first ammo guide a few years ago, good work.
I was actually looking for a new amo guide from you yesterday bit couldn't find one. Just woke up to one.
Ayyyy, its nice to see you remake your old but gold video!
Feels great to catch this one 4 years later. 🎉
Big improvement too man! Good job!
I was fr waiting for this to come out. Like no joke, I watched your previous video about ammo and wondered why there are no new ammo types in it
im glad you remade the visuals
great video 👌👌
The VOG on the bmp 2 m has so little explosive filler that it doesn't actually break terrain objects like fences or trees
It also doesn't do any damage to tracks at all or very very little. It's practically useless other than using it for blinding the enemy if you shoot them so the gernade detonates and makes a very small dust cloud
I've been playing for some time now and I know pretty much a lot about shell types but it's good to see more informative vids like this one ❤
Thanks dude. Your old guide really helped me when I started war thunder and I wanted to say thanks!
Thank you so much the old video has helped me improve drastically .
But i was left wondering if there were any changes ❤❤ true goat
Fun fact: a guided rocket is technically a missile
Not entirely. A guided rocket is a usually conventional unguided rocket that has guidance package fitted to it. Yes by definition it’s now a missile, but they were built with and around rocket hardware.
Bro I got Into war Thunder a couple months ago and watched your old video. It was really informative and helpful, but I'm glad you remastered it because my brother just got into and I can show him this.
Thanks, bro much appreciated
So essentially the more letters it has the better.
Your animation skills improved so much from the first vid. I'm impressed!
not all apfsds are made of DU. in fact very few are. early ones were just steel and later ones are tungsten.
True, I just simplified it so the wall of text didn't get any longer
Very informative and amazing video! Thanks dude :D
I find your video interesting and helpful especially with the animation.
A part 2 we’ve all been waiting a while now
I have been playing for years but I always like videos like this
This is very helpful for new players. Thanks!
man this video is even better than the first one. well done mate and keep it up. (sorry if there is any grammatical error, I'm spanish)
A cap doesn't improve the angled penetration at high angles compared to an uncapped round. It's the opposite, actually, since when hitting angled armor the nose of the uncapped round has a higher tendency to break off and effectively make the round slightly blunt.
This is very clear with rounds like 90 mm T33 having 175 mm of penetration at 0 degrees but 67 mm at 60 degrees, while 90 mm M82 has 185 mm at 0 degrees and 65 mm at 60 degrees.
Yeepie, best guide about shells is remade, prob still the best around here :D
Very nice to see this great video updated. As a small addition, smoke shells can kill open topped vehicles in-game with the low amount of HE filler contained in them, and I suppose the smoke wouldn't be very healthy for the crew in real life either (on top of the disorienting explosion, even if it didn't do much physical harm).
nice video bro, keep it up
I love the 37mm SAP on the M22 Locust, it's so good against open tops and poorly armoured tanks that your solid shot just goes straight through.
Man remastered an older video, major w
Look! he made a part 4!
Im all seriousness though, the mic quality is golden compared to the last time you did a video likr this ;)
Nice work!!
He returns when we needed him the most
Its the same video but updated! I love it in every single way!
W updated ammo video
All of my friends who starts playing warthunder have to watch each of your videos about the tank shells. Its the law!
Thanks for the update
Thank you for the update!
My pleasure
Great vid, only thing I would add is APHE rounds have a fuse which will only activate on sufficiently thick armour, so especialy new players won't get confused why their round did pretty much nothing while shooting something lightly armored.
True, forgot to mention that
The return of the king
I’m a US main. Your videos saved me from punching a hole in my monitor. I didn’t understand any of the rounds until I watched your videos. With the snails really bad match making I’m now able to take out German tanks with a 75mm Sherman
Been waiting for this video for a long time ! The first one was fucking awesome ! Love the vids man ! 🤩
The smoke rounds are under appreciated, I've spammed them on some maps with wide open areas. Was able to get most of our team into the first objective without being hit.
It's sad that you didn't mention that (some) APFSDS rounds DO experience normalization, you can very clearly see it in game.
Their penetration at 60° will be more than half of that at 0°.
I'm not even a new player anymore, but I'd like this video!
Oh no, he forgot High Explosive Fin Stabilized
10:38
I believe the LOSAT’s missile contains a kinetic penetrator rod within in it rather than the whole missile being the penetrator.
nope, just a giant piece of tungsten
@@vollp from what little I could find on the internet is that kinetic penetrator missiles all use rod penetrators within the missiles.
@@ZGD-yy9oy Well, like you said, there's really no information on it whatsoever. I'm not gonna argue that it's one way or the other because I have no idea. I briefly looked KEMs up and didn't find any information about a rod penetrator, but if you found some, I'd believe it. Both is possible, although the rod is probably more likely
HE CAME BACK
finally I was watiting for this viedeo since over a year now I guess
Nice work
The myth of shell normalization of APC round persists…
The cap serves a single purpose: Distributed the impact force on the nose of the shell to keep it from breaking or shattering on impact.
This is most likely to occur at 30° impact angle or against face hardened armor.
It serves no point after impacting armor at greater angles than 45°, at which the nose shape becomes pretty much meaningless.
God the first one was already good but this is just amazing!!
Great video, thanks man 👍
Glad you liked it!
Small corections
1 only the american APFSDS and some other AP rounds are generally made out of DU. Other nations pretty much never used DU. The USA is also moving away from DU penetrators as far as im aware. Problem is that its still radioactive. It does not have huge effects on the crew but the same can't be said when it hits a target where it realeases significant amounts of radiation through the heating. Enough that it is not recomended to go near a vehicle thaf is destroyed with DU.
2 HE shells have 2 penetration values. The value of the shell and the value of the explosion. The value of the shell changes over distance.
3 Im not sure about the implementation in warthunder but HE does have a fuze sensitivity. Which would be 2cm of plywood for the 2cm Minengeshoss.
Good you included the one I commented about a while ago
Way better graphics than last time!
a rally good guide. i really like thet all the info was compressed to only 15 minutes but i found a small misstake which a huge amount of people get wrong so its no wonder that you did reserch and still put it there. shells that have normalization caps dont dotate towards the armour. the cap just sticks to the armour and holds the shell from slipping or rocicheting completely.
One of my fav WT videos, now better 😌
I have the sabot from an M829A2 trainer round that I glued back together and use as a desk ornament. One of my most prized possessions.
New one, nice
HE shells are a ton of fun when you hit high calibers such as the object 292 added in the recent event
What a Perfect Video
Great job
2min in and already learned something , thanks man
Glad to help
FANTASTIC
The French OCC 105 F1 HEAT round you get in all the amx30’s differs to a standard heat round. As the CN-105-F1 was a rifled cannon, the shell has an outer casing separated from the inner shell by ball bearings, allowing the outer casing to rotate and stabilize the shell without spinning the liner and jet.
You forgot to mention that there are two types of APHEBC. The regular (can be seen in rank 1 italy) and the funny soviet bias one which has a more blunt nose under the cap that often penetrates more armor than it says it does under ridiculous angles
Finally a new one, how many times will he say “sends metal all around the place”
6:05 I think that's another reason. With HEATFS projectiles, rotation reduces efficiency, that's why they are stabilized by fins and why APDSF projectiles have them because the barrel has no grooves
I, for one, saw the old one, and for two I have way more knowledge about these now. But it seems like there may be some shell types that I may never see
Love the new visuals
Glad you like em
I think it would be important to mention hesh has received quite a significant buff to penetration on solid, homogeneous armors (such as late war German vehicles). Now it will be much more effective against these armor while still being mostly useless against composite, multi layered, spaced or reactive armor were it will rely solely on the overpressure mechanic to kill
nice visuals man
Glad you like em
nice video
Sub caliber shells are typically also better at pen because they can achieve higher velocity than a larger shell with the same amount of propellant because KE=m*v^2
Nice with the extra effort on the animations.
Glad you like em
Ahhh finally an updated version
The legend has come to reclaim his throne.
Sabot explained: Sabot or APDS is a shell that shatters upon impacting anything in war thunder. 500mm of penetration? Think again, you actually only get 100mm.
The more you know
Yesterday I watched an old one and today is new video
i watched the original guide like 2 months ago. this showed up in my recommended just now, a mere 15 hours after it was uploaded. i did not search for this, i am not subscribed, i have not watched any videos since that first guide a few months ago. i went from watching that when i started off with reserves to now being at like 5.3 or so. the youtube algorithm works in mysterious ways
After years he makes a new one
In-game, APBC outperforms APCBC (assuming equal mass and velocity) for angles around 25-50 degrees, which are some of the most common target angles you will encounter. The exact angle range where this happens increases with the overmatch ratio, Gaijin made public the exact formula they use a few years ago so I wrote a little python code to test it out. It's questionnable whether this is realistic or not, but the result is that large-caliber APBC shells (such as soviet 122mm ww2 shells) have unreasonably good performance versus thin sloped armor. As a result, they are actually a better choice than APCBC for most scenarios
man see better video, man happy
Thank you so much 🙏❤❤❤
