Same, I’ve always loved Latias and thought it was really cool (Latios too but I always preferred latias’ color scheme)
Honestly, and this maybe because of the movie, I never saw them as ‘boy and girl’ I saw them as the older, wiser, and protective older brother. And the smaller, curious, and playful younger sister. Which as an older brother always struck a cord with me. Heck I got my younger brother a Latios stuffed animal to tell them I will always be there. So I honestly love these Pokémon and their designs! Their megas could have been a bit more creative though….
Aww, that’s so sweet. Thank you for sharing, that got me to smile c:
The mystery dungeon games (at least the first ones) characterize them like that too, so I've always seen them that way too.

@@TheSpeep Same for me. Pokémon Heroes and Pokémon Adventures (I believe, it’s been a hot minute since I last read the Emerald chapters) also characterizes them the same way. Agreed. The movie they were in was also pretty good.
Honestly that's what Pokemon is all about. I think once you've run through nearly 400 of these critters the little things like that stop mattering. it's why every comment section in these videos are filled with people who grew up with Pokemon that he didn't complaining he doesn't have the same nostalgia they do.
Latios and Latias are based around the the concept of Aeons. Which are mythical beings that often come in pairs (male and female) and used in Gnosticism to depict holy beings of power. They are not really “birds” and more of a spin on classic dragons. The floating wings and intelligent faces do give an idea that they were created with a purpose of a higher power. At least in my eyes.
Is that why they're the only Legendaries that have genders?
Source: some guy on bulbapedia
EDIT: Jesus Christ, fine, let's have this then.
Literally the only source for this interpretation is Bulbapedia, it is mentioned as an idea alongside the idea that they are inspired by the concept of yin and yang, and the jungle parrot species Eos which has red and blue plumage, both of which are more credible interpretations, because Gnostic mysticism is _f*ing complicated_ and I see no evidence of its presence anywhere else in these designs.
Aeons in gnostic mysticism are weird, complicated things, and when I was scripting this short I spent a little time trying to read up on them because I wanted to understand where the claim came from. Frankly, my conclusion is that the claim is based on extremely superficial similarities, because _literally nothing else about their designs or their pokédex entries or their stories has anything to do with Christian Gnosticism._ I don't think it's a particularly compelling interpretation, I think it's either the pet theory of a Bulbapedia editor, or a throwaway idea that they included in the trivia section for the sake of completeness.
You could MAYBE layer some of the ideas of the sinful feminine spawning a crisis which must be resolved by the self-sacrifice of the masculine (i.e. Christ) onto the plot of the Pokémon Heroes movie they debuted in. Maybe you can see the evil revived Aerodactyl as the Demiurge if you squint. But self-sacrifice narratives exist in _thousands_ of traditions, and the Sophia concept is hell of a lot more complicated than that, and the movie doesn't engage with any of the other tropes or ideas from Valentinianism, so I don't think it's an interpretation that's reasonably supported by the text. It's more of a Game Theory theory, i.e. matching a series of coincidental overlaps to a pattern by cherry-picking similarities in order to produce a fun and slightly outrageous surface reading.
Also, and I really need people to stop doing this: "aeon" and "eon" do not mean the same thing - an Aeon in Gnostic mysticism is a sort of semi-angelic creature embodying a hypostatic, essentially platonic ideal - and an "eon" is _a measurement of time._ They are called the Eon duo because they are the long-time mystical guardians of a particular place.
Just because the words sound a little bit similar doesn't mean they mean the same thing, "the Eon ticket!" is not the gotcha you think it is.
I get something like 10-40.000 comments per month across my channels, a pretty significant proportion of them are abuse and cruelty, and this particular claim has been repeated at me several dozen times by people calling me a stupid ignorant moron for not copy-pasting the Bulbapedia trivia section into my video script. _You'll have to f*ing forgive me_ if I ever respond _a little bit grumpily_ to someone repeating an unsourced fan theory like it's an established fact at me.
I very, VERY gently pushed back on this comment by drily noting that _the only source_ for this particular interpretation is Bulbapedia, and some of you people reacted like I told this person to go kill his parents. I am not your servile CZcams friend, I don't post teary-eyed videos calling you all "my family," I'm a grown-ass man with a job that I do professionally, and I reserve the right to _very occasionally_ be _very slightly less than perfectly polite_ on the goddamn Internet.
@@TBSkyenShorts well, there's also the fact that they are the _eon_ pokemon ... though in japan they just go with むげん, which can be read as 無限, "infinity", 夢幻, "mirage / dream / fantasy", or 無言, "silence", so who knows where the dub got that

As a kid I really liked Latias a lot. It was the first legendary Pokémon up to that point to look strong and simultaneously kind and gentle (the mythical Pokémon Mew and Celebi just look cute but not powerful). It has a similar appeal like Dragonite for me.
Same
Same thing here. It was my Dragon type in ORAS.
Kind and gentle does not apply to Mew 🤣 it called Mewtwo an abomination and tried to exterminate him
Some people have pointed this out already but I want to chime in too. The lati siblings aren't necessarily only gendered, they have different personalities and embody a kind of duality. Looking at them in this western cartoon lens really does them a disservice.
I remember seeing these in the movie and my friend being convinced these were hidden split evolutions for Togetic.
I always thought that when I first saw them while messing with the game files (i had a thing for hacking roms when I was 12)
Yeah sure, I'll incorporate that into my belief system. Like the Cubone-Kangaskhan thing.
Is it because of the red/blue triangle?
@ Red/Blue triangles plus the fact that Togekiss is _also_ kinda based on a jet plane. For some reason.
Honestly that would be way more interesting.
"I've never really liked them that much" heartbreaking to hear. I've been in love with these two jet engines since I first laid eyes on them.
I've always thought they had a lot more personality than just "the boy one and the girl one". Latios is serious and protective, while Latias is free-spirited and curious. Their wings are kind of strange looking, and they don't really read as very dragon like, at least to me, but I still like them and they were so good in the movie.
Nah, I could see them as dragons in a DreamWorks movie.
Hm, I mean as far as sexual dimorphism in creature design goes, this feels more like purposefully alluding to duality than "making the girl one hyperfem". They even have a shape in each other's color in their torso, which feels like a pretty clear nod to the yin yang. The megas, then, get a sense of completion, being both purple.
I do like that your design analysis goes mostly for what's obvious rather than lore that you'd have to look up, but this reading *is meant to be easy* for asian kids (the "Enby Power-up" is quite literally canon though, the Lati Twins would love Iron Valiant)
Edit: for a pokemon example that I don't like, there's Pikachu getting a goddamn heart in its tail.
The Pikachu heart tail is something I’ve grown to love in an absurdist way. It’s just so stupid.
But then again, it is one of the few Pokémon dimorphism changes to shape rather than color.
Yeah tbh I see this one as fairly realistic in terms of how animals do have sexual dimorphism. Latios has slightly bigger frills on his face and legs and a bulkier body, while Latias is rounder. I don't think it's stereotypical, other than _maybe_ the color. I didn't even realize that they were supposed to have different genders before watching this short. Maybe they shouldn't have been red and blue, but then again nobody wants a dull brown Latias, like the majority of female birds.
I really don't think sexual dimoprhism is necessary for every pokemon especially the pickachu one sucks. Pokemon which are inherently sexually dimorphic as part of their design is fine but nah I don't like the fact they add sexual dimoprhism to older Pokemon which are already seen as being non dimorphic
@@stonewall1485 I dont understand what is making people mad lol. You see differences in sex in all kinds of animals, pokemon are fictional animals and they have differences. Why do they jave differences? Because different designs means more toys and more money. And its a cool thing anyway
Man, it always hurts when TB Skyen doesn’t like the design of one (or in this case two) of my favourites
I mean he is just a random internet person you should like what you like and try not to get influenced by people on the internet. Imo latias and latios are excellent designs.
@@Zauberfeuer-fw8ql Oh absolutely, I still love them too, and don’t really agree with the comments about sexual dimorphism in this particular case
It’s just the contrast of going from ‘Oh sweet, I love this one!’ to hearing criticism is always a little jarring
Yeah this hurt lol
Atleast they had one of the best Pokémon movies tho, plus they are just really fun to use. Will never get tired of flying around hoenn with them in ORAS
The story and music of heroes was fire!
They're shaped like friends
I really like Latias. She's one of my favourites in fact. She's has all the cool parts of Latios that my child self would gravitate towards but with a much nicer colour pallet and a happier, friendlier face to balance it out. The white they used for her for some reason tickles my brain in some odd way, and it works super well with the soft red of the normal colours and the deep sunny yellow of the shiny.
Latias is the type of creature I could imagine myself having a journey alongside as a child. A super cool jet dragon who's always in a good mood and protects her friends from danger. It's the kind of idealistic friend I'd imagine as a child and that makes her a really charming creature to me. I cannot really justify it outside of that she looks like a friend and in the case of Pokemon, I think that's more than good enough.
I agree! Same with Latios. They're so cool!
Damn hating on the latis because they have gendered aspects is wild
I mean it seems like to me he focused in on that because it's the only notable thing to say about the designs.
That's about the only thing they have going on for them though. They're fine. I never thought they were offensive or anything, but I always forgot about them as a kid. And I kinda forget they exist nowadays too.
Yeah, like the fact of their duality as a concept! Tho he seemed to really dislike that aspect in particular so eh
Latias and Latios are twins.
You’re taking an L on this one
How can you not like JET DRAGONS
Isnt latias red? Shes pink in the 3d models but most the models are known to be desaturated. Shes almost the same color as voltorb in the 3ds model colors, who is definitely red
She is reder than blood, you are indeed correct
I've always liked that they aren't like implied to be some kind of romantic pair (ugh) But are instead kind of coded to be siblings which I just think is kind of cool.
That's a shame, the Latis Are some of my favorite pokemon
I forget where I heard it, but I believe Latios and Latias are also partially inspired by Aeons from Gnosticism since their classification is the Eon Pokemon, and in that, Aeons are always born in masculine-feminine pairs, which I think is why they have the sexual dimorphism, I hope that helps with the reading of their designs
@@failurextreme7084oh yikes
I would've commented this under the other aeon comment, but it has turned into a pretty big shit show.
So, sorry if this isn't appreciated!
As someone who loves Latias (It was the first and only pokemon I grinded to level 100, after all), I don't think them being based on aeons gives them anything.
If they are, then I'd expect something far more godly or even eldritch to go with the concept, not airplane-birds like everyone thinks they are.
Plus, although the concept of aeons aren't exactly commonly known, if you need to tell someone the influence in order for them to appreciate the design, then you did a bad job designing.
Still, I think I prefer the Laitas/Latios we got to anything that would've worked better with the concept, since I really like their airplane mascot (As TB Skyen put it) appeal, as well as definitely being biased!
lol no he didn’t, y’all overreacting
I honestly don’t think his response was that bad? He just said that they didn’t source anything reputable and with stuff like this, rumors easily get spread around. This is why the YOI fandom still thinks there’s a law in Japan preventing gay tv shows from airing at certain times even though that’s not true. He could’ve been nicer but also he doesn’t owe anyone a perfect response.
@@SenyiKimmo he basically did say that tho? like, what he posted has essentially that exact meaning. I don’t mean to be rude, I hope this doesn’t come off that way, but I think y’all are reading far more disrespect than is actually there.
I think pointing out the sexual diamorphism as something to "ew" over these two in particular is kinda weird to be honest. Like I think in all their dipictions their relationship to each other is big brother and little sister, and the things you pointed out are moreso meant to highlight that. And the differences don't even feel that egregiously gendered? Like Latios is barely even any more sharp than latios besides the eye shape and one curve of the neck.
while I agree on them not being aeons, they're also not really birds (I mean they could be, but nothing really hints at it other than maybe the name origins ? but again, speculations) they're wind currents jet dragons ! makes sense for THE weather region.
Hot currents are red, cold currents are blue, purple lines are apparently occluded fronts ? dunno what that means but it atleast explains the megas lol
They are clearly gendered but tbh I don't really see how it's a bad thing ? they're just clear opposites, hot and cold, sharp and soft, red and blue
Anyways this wasn't really a critique or anything, just wanted to share some random stuff bout them
I took Geosystems class and learned about weather so I can confirm that, although the unit was confusing af, the occulded fronts are purple 👍
i hate to be pedantic but if latias and latios's mega forms are a fusion between the two then it would be being _intersex_ that gives you superpowers, people get this wrong all the time about iron valiant and real animals like male calicos and it drives me CRAZY. does make me wish the other pokemon who have such extreme sexual dimorphism that they have separate dex numbers (nidoking/queen, volbeat and illumise, glalie and froslass, etc) got the same treatment though, i think it's neat
Latias is softer and kinder because it's younger and more naive, not because it's the girl.
I thought latias was the boy
@@FLYYADIGG24 I thought so too when I was a kid, but that's because my older brother decided to prank me by nicknaming his Latios Latias and gaslight me for years
But obviously they made it so that the girl one would be young and naive, because the association of femininity with cuteness and innocence was definitely at play here. If they wanted to, they could have had the male one be the Young innocent cute one while the girl was his more serious sister. I'm not saying that it's bad that they did it the way they did, I'm just saying that what you said doesn't actually disprove Skyen's argument.
Lets all remember, female sthich was not just pink, she had literal boobs.
And long hair-like antenna
I always saw Latias as more "little sister" vibes though the movie probably helped with that.
The mega forms look the same because gender differences aren't reflected in any mega evolutions; Latios and Latias are different pokemon the same way that Nidoran male and female are different
Though with the caveat that Nidoran's gender dimorphism made them different species because they came from a generation before Poke-gender was really a thing. I'm willing to cut the Nidos some slack for that reason; the Latis, not so much.
@@timothymclean well there's also the matter of Volbeat and Illumise. They're so much the same thing that they can produce eggs of the other
Nidoran♂️, Nidoran♀️, Latias, Latios, Volbeat, and Illumise were all introduced before gender differences. They were made separate Pokédex entries to allow their meta data to be consistent with every other Pokémon at the time.
I do like how the anime and spin-off games present them as brother and sister, Latias being the younger one.
And how Latias being able to disguise herself as a human is a concept that appears in both the anime and Pokemon Adventures manga.
The real kicker is shiny Latias and Latios. Those are some of the prettiest mons in universe.
That's just like in New vegas, where being bisexual gives youe extra damage on everyone
I never really seen Latios and Latias as sexual dimorphism, since they're usually siblings.
But I find interesting the fact that their signature item is the remains of the other, being why they're normally given one per save
This is one of those designs where the sexual dimorphism isn’t an issue to me?? They’re both really sick designs.
Ironically, I preferred Latias as a kid because her sprite in the original games was more intricate and portrayed a friendly aura while Latios felt super aggressive and impractical in the leg area.
I could see Latias chilling relaxing on the ground or on a branch but how the f is Latios gonna stay stable on those stubs??
I always loved their designs, they were always so sleek and cool with how fast and magical they were and having 2 designs of the same species really showed how much personality you can have with them. I really would like to see more of them.
Something to remember is that these two used to be the other half of Blaziken's original design.
Honestly kinda happy that they split, as I've held both end designs quite closely to my heart.
I won’t bash your takes. But I’ve been watching a lot of your league skin and Pokémon design takes and let’s just say 9/10 times everything you don’t like is exactly what I’m in too. Main things are what you look at as boring stereotypes. Are just simplistic child game designs that I actually like. Looking forwards to gen4
I honestly like latios and latias they look like Lugias kids and that honeslty makes me smile. Their movesets also help with their designs too. Also theyre not in a relationship they ARE RELATED. Like Zamazenta and Zacian the two legendaries are siblings and the blue one being more protective over the red one
Rare Skyen L. I actually have no idea where you get the idea that Latios's shape language is "sharper" and "more aggressive" save for MAYBE his eyes being smaller
Neither are typically aggressive by canon
It's an observation based on their design. Latios has the traits that are rounder diminished and the ones rhat are sharper exaggerated, or even the amount of shape on their backs, that's where the bulky comes in. That is the aggression in the model design.
Latias is the opposite.
I would wait with calling a take an L, until AFTER you can properly understand the claim it's making.

Latias' development history was very interesting. Starting with that Latias/Blaziken mix, followed by a mysterious Pokédex entry about a Pokémon that could send magnetic signals (what?)
We ended up with airplane dragon, which just so happens to look like Togepi's eggshell.
Latios is blue.
Since I missed the Latias movie and only have strong memories of Latios from Tobias in the diamond and pear anime, I actually kinda kept reading Latios as the female one. Latias’ red color and smaller stature always gave it a kinda rambunctious younger brother energy to Latios’ put together older sister. I def know I’m in the minority but regardless here’s more evidence to the fact that gender is a construct and any feature can be read and male or female depending on culture and context
I mean, you’re not wrong but the only other time they had done this before was with nidoking and Queen. It’s a bad stereotype when it’s used again and again, but there isn’t anything wrong with using it in general. Later pokemon use the gender differences really well in fact, Meowstic, Indenee, Oinkolone are all good examples.
Sometimes i like to joke and call the latino and latina😂😂

No they aren't. Eon and aeon aren't the same thing.
@@alvedonaren what do they have to do with time, though?
I like them alot. Mainly because I think they're really good examples of simple dragons. They aren't really complex, so they never had fhe 3D growing pains that soms Pokemon did. And also the movie of course
I really like how the white spot on latios looks like a shield in the 3d model, a hint of being the defensive one
As for many Pokemon, my first introduction to Latias was a TCG card. I had no idea about the fact it was the female one or the fact it... wasn't a Fire type.
I like Latias for the memories, but when I think Latios, I think flying super fast through air and water in a cool way. Like Sharpedo, the aerodynamism make it fun to imagine moving.
Never let this guy cook ever again
Latias and latios, latios in particular have always been my favourite legendaries, I just love the idea of a pair of legendary jet planes roaming the skies of Hoenn, and the addition of you getting to ride on the back of one in ORAS accompanied by such glorious music was just amazing
I think it's kind of wild that in the first pokemon generation launched after 2001 they added Two Plane Pokemon
Mr. Champion, a second member of the eon duo just hit the sky pillar!
Now I can't unsee Latios with Bird of paradise style headfathers.
I will not tolerate Latias slander in this house
Ooh, I like the fact that their mega form is just them combined, colors and all

i wonder what TBSkyen thinks about Jellycent
I dreamed of this series recently, but instead of pokemon you talked about animal crossing villagers
As a nonbinary, I can confirm, I have superpowers.
Fear nonbinary people, they can end you in a second
I have a couple reasons for not being too upset at the fact they are gendered. One, it’s such a small detail that I, a grown adult, completely missed it, and also regularly forget that they’re the only gendered mythical Pokemon.
And two, if we gotta take Pokemon to task on this specifically, they invented a new subspecies of Butterfree just to not imply that Ash Ketchum’s one wasn’t possibly gay.
Or to bring in a real deep cut of controversy, the whole deal with Kadabra getting blacklisted from merchandise for years for antisemitism, but that’s another story
what about yin and yang? Didn't address that either, and there's literally artwork of them making the symbol. The fact their bellies have the other color and also a sharp shape vs round. Yin is considered feminine and yang is also masculine.
i don't think it's fair to say their designs are stereotypical because they are quite old, and back then there wasn't even such stereotype for it to be a problem
"being nonbinary gives you superpowers" is a great takeaway
Latios and Latias are pretty stereotypical yeah but they don’t bother me as much as the more recent gendering in Pokemon designs which has been so weird and disappointing to me. Like I’m sorry but Enamorus?? 😭 And the way only the obviously anthropomorphic feminine noble Pokemon in PLA are female while all the other nobles are male and unimportant side quest pokemon are referred to as it/its unless it’s again got a feminine design… plus Pokemon going back and retroactively adding gender dimorphism to old designs on pretty weak stereotypical levels too. I dunno man I keep going ??? they’re just creatures! they’re just little guys!
Boi I love these little goobers. So cute, big eyed, and unassuming, but very powerful. One of my favorite design tropes.
NonBinary person here, I do indeed have superpowers
If I’m being honest, I don’t see what you’re saying. I always just saw it as Latias being young and curious and Latios being older and more protective. In fact, I never even realized Latios was supposed to be boy, I just thought they were both sisters
Latios and Latias are brother and sister so that's why they look similar. If you haven't, you should also look at the original idea for one of the Latis. It looked like a fusion between Latias and Blaziken, but they clearly didn't jive with that so they separated the two concepts into a starter and a legendary.
I've always liked their designs since I only saw them in official pokemon artwork like my book i had that was essentially the gen 3 pokedex, I could neber beat the elite 4 when I was a kid so I couldn't unlock them so they were always this cool looking pokemon I was aware existed but could never get and that made them something special to me
Tell me you have never played Mystery Dungeon without telling me you never played Mystery Dungeon...
She is his sister! And I'm all for it!
Sexual dimorphisism isn't implying that they are a pair in terms of procrestion, its just showing the differences between male and female in a pokemon species (which in this case is male: more spikey and aggressive, Female: rounder and defensive.)
They also have no lore outside of the movie, like what makes them "Legendary"?
These two seem to be in the Heatran club of Legendaries/Mythicals that are considered as such because they are unimaginably rare more than anything else.
Never seen a Lati twin hater before
as a kid i thought they were sisters,,,???? i thought latios was like a girlboss bigger sister and latias was the cheery younger sister . i wonder where i got that impression from ?
Just realized their mega is purple because red+blue
That's really cool
When I got the notifications I read "Latinas and latinos" lol
Being nonbinary DOES give you superpowers! :3
Something went wrong while watching this and the first thing I heard was “being nonbinary gives you superpowers”
Lets be honest, their Mega forms are identical So that the flying Mode in OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire requires only one Model.
I don't see a point in them otherwise.
According to the brochure of the movie, "they look like dolphins", apparently.
I guess it makes sense for the movie titled "Guardians of the City of Water"(in Japanese).
Mega Latias and Latios are identical to only have to make one flying animation in ORAS. That's all there is to it
Interesting that you bring up the terrible pink Stitch gf for these guys, but thought Huntail and Gorebyss were tongue-in-cheek clever designs. I think those two are far worse than anything implied by Latios and Latias
Incredible. For once I disagree with every single take. I love these two. Top tier legendaries for me.
I'm glad Pokemon acknowledged the superpowers I got for being enby
Tho they are actually siblings rather than partners
Wait that’s what latias was meant to be?! I thought it was just a younger version
Yup, it’s a gender thing. Their names ending in os and as are denote gender similar to Spanish words and they’re in the relatively rare category of legendary Pokémon that have genders, Latios is 100% male and Latias is 100% female.
No, Latias is Latios's younger sister.
@@theking8347 oh I see thanks for clarifying
@@theking8347from my understanding they are twins, born at the same time. Additionally them being eon pokemon implies that they are hella old so saying one was born maybe an hour before would in no way account for the difference in their designs.
