Apparently Gene Hackman ad-libbed the espresso line, and the crew immediately broke down in hysterics as soon as the screen went black.
The monster missed out on "some serious gourmet sh_t"........
That was the funniest line of the whole scene
Actually the scene went to black so quickly was because of the crew laughing.
This scene never gets old... Great acting on both parts 😊
Hackmen is always good.
This scene just proves to me that Hackman should have been in more comedies.
This was Hackman's first comedic performance. He just NAILED IT. I grew up with Hackman as 'Popeye Doyle'....and then, to see him in this....it was a revelation. Hard to believe that it was him under that beard.
Could not agree more, guys! I love his comedic role. Great performance as Little Bill in Unforgiven! Amazing opposite Denzel in Crimson Tide!
Could not agree more, guys! I love his comedic role. Great performance as Little Bill in Unforgiven! Amazing opposite Denzel in Crimson Tide!
Love the way he says, "Cigars!"
Apparently he was worried about being typecast by Hollywood if he did.
Still, after forty years, one of the funniest scenes in comedy history. :)
Nathaniel Harari - Its only competition might be a few other scenes in the same movie...🤣🤣🤣
Correctuon still THE funniest... 🤣
@@animavideography1379 Six years after I wrote that comment! Heh. :D
This movie is loaded with the best scenes in comedy history!
Makes me wonder if Peter Boyle or Gene Hackman cracked up 1st during the initial take.
You cannot overstate how brilliant Hackman is in this scene. His mannerisms, his voice, his expressions, the soothing way that he speaks. Very few actors could have pulled this off.
"Cigars!"
@@JohnSmith-op1tcreplace with N
That's why he's Gene Hackman🤷🏼♂️🤓😎✌🏻
@@JohnSmith-op1tcthe way he said that! He was so happy!
Gene Hackman as a comic actor was brilliant. He should have done more comedy.
3:08 his face when the cup breaks lmao
Who wouldn't make that face when good alcohol is wasted?
Why does the blind man give his guest a breakable cup? He wasn't well prepared as a host.
Yea probably my favorite part of the movie, he was just so done with that situation.
His previous guests departed, before, the "Wine Glass" was offered, so, he did not know it was breakable.
frank barone
If you want an example there are no small roles only small actors, this is it. Hackman steals the movie with this scene.
leftcoaster67 - And that’s up against Peter Boyle, on top of it! Two genius scene stealers blowing the movie up...lol. ✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻
he asked for a small role, too. And smashed it.
@Weghweh Hwewehwhe But you must remember this scene. Who could forget the scalding soup ladled into his lap, the Monster trying so hard to accept some human compassion. O, our lot is a heavy burden isn't it? Lord knows what Hackman would have done with the espresso 😂
Apparently, Hackman accepted a reduction in his usual fee to ensure that he got this part.
Most all of it Hackman ad lib. Killer !!
I was going to make espresso...
That line was ad lib by Hackman. The crew had to cut because they were laughing so hard.
LeaveMeAloneCZcams Really? That's awesome :D hahahaha hilarious
Brooks said that Hackman ad lib a lot of the scene. "Forgive me. You're a mute (pat, pat), an incredibly big mute." Another one that cracked up the crew.
Every time I order one I remember this scene LOL
One of the funniest lines in movie history
"What is your name?" - "MMMMmmmm" - "I didn't get that."
Every. Single. Time. LOL.
I like the way he just keeps right on talking and ladling up the soup despite the Monster's howls of pain.
how does a warm bowl of soup sound to you ,
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
sSO FUCKING FUNNY , I LAUGH MY BALLS OFF EVERYFUCKINGTIME.
"an incredibly big mute"
HA HA HA
Are you ready for your soup??
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Blind man, "Do you have your cigar? Let me see. Let me see."
Gets me everytime.
They were Cuban, right?
yeah ha ha lol
I never caught that ... 😂
All these years I had no idea it was Gene Hackman, till now.
Omg same here wow!!!
Same
Same
Right now in 2021...............................ME TOO
Me too he he 😂
2022
"Wait. Where are you going? I was going to make Espresso."
Gene Hackman ad-libbed that last line. They actually had it fade to black because the crew began laughing after hearing that line.
One of the funniest scenes of this masterpiece of comedy. Gene Hackman nailed it all the way specially with the improvised ending. Truly a masterpiece.
And it's funnier when You watched the original Frankenstein escene which is parodied on this one
@@lucattsurTechnically, Bride of Frankenstein. The blind man is from the sequel, not the first film.
To be part of the crew filming this scene would have been an absolute privilege
I don't see how they kept quiet on the set. I would have been rolling in the aisles in every scene.
@@ethelryan257 That was actually a problem. The crew had a hard time trying not to laugh.
when Gene Hackman says "cigars" with that smile i nearly fall off the chair laughing- absolutely brilliant! great scene
At 4:25....when the monster screaming as he breaks down the door...THEN HE LOOKS AT HIS BURNED THUMB AND SCREAMS AGAIN. I *live* for this scene. It is the funniest thing in the film.
Agreed
Well, for me, one if the funniest scenes
I know. Lolol
But the funniest part of it all was him just looking at his burning thumb for a few seconds and not screaming! 🤣 😆
The most subtle line in the scene is when Harold asks the monster to hold out his cigar. Harold says, "Do you have your cigar? LET ME SEE!"
What a great scene. I read somewhere that Gene Hackman asked to be in this movie - any part -- I guess he knew it would be a hit. This cameo appearance almost steals the show.
I had read that the Hackman also improvised much of the scene.
This was confirmed in Brooks' autobiography: All About Me. Do yourself a favor and read it. It's amazing.
"I can be funny..."
Yes, he did. Gene Wilder explained in an interview how he knew Hackman, and that Hackman asked him if there was some little part he could play.
I love that little nod he does when his thumb is lit on fire. That always kills me. xD
+BETRvids WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!
"My thumb's on fire. HOLY SHIT, MY THUMB'S ON FIRE!!"
Yes. Perfect.
Mmm 👍🔥😣
Yep, that tip is glowing.
OOWAAAAOOOHHH
The Monster reaction is PRICELESS. Love the look of the Monster 'The hell I get myself into?' LMAO. Mel Brooks is the best.
Absolutely my ' go to ' film when I need a damn good laugh. Never tire of it.
Genius. Never a funnier scene in motion picture history. Gene Hackman can play
Love Hackman's comments when he first meets him in the door. "An incredibly big mute", and "You must have been the biggest in your class."
"Cigars!" :-)
what about the booze.numnuts
Hendrix Fan poor blind man , they should be friends :)
Similar wit to Lex Luthor...
That line sounds like it was written by Gene Wilder.
Funniest scene ever captured on film by an actor almost unrivaled in cinematic history. CIGARS!!! And a TOAST!!! for the finest actor of our time. The incomparable Gene Hackman.
....what a masterpiece.....one of the best film ever.
This is just a perfect little film within the film. I would have loved to seen Hackman star in a spinoff movie about Harold the blind hermit.
and it's a great sendup of a very similar scene in Bride of Frankenstein
Absolutely hands down one of the best scenes in the movie, Gene Hackman's cameo and Peter Boyle are brilliant..
Oh, don't get me wrong. This scene is hilarious through and through, but Peter Boyle screaming at his thumb is where I lost it laughing every time.
“WOWW!”
😂
For me, it was his facial expression just before he screams at his thumb. His expression was like, "Hey...this fire is good!"
This scene is comic genius. Sometimes a cigar is just a thumb.
Hackman was brilliant in this scene. It is much harder to do comedy than drama.
I'm glad we have actual funny and creative old movies we can go back and see.
Feeling left out in the present?
@@godzillavkk Not when people like you reply and keep me company. Thanks...dad
@@theunknown4570 Sorry, but I'm not your father.
"Don't inhale until the tip glows." - and he lights his thumb on fire.
That cracks me up everytime.
Funniest scene of the movie. First time he poured the soup on the monster's balls I was laughing so hard.
+Vectrex2809 And the monster's expression makes it even more hilarious
Yea me too!!! I was in stitches, especially when the second spill happened!!!😂🤣🤣😂😂😅
Would that soup have become Monster Ball Soup (Matza Ball)? Even funnier because many of the actors in it and Mel Brooks are Jewish.
The whole movie is perfect.
@@DarkPaladin24 he looks up toward heaven as if to say give me a break, you've got to be kidding
Stunning performance by Hackman. What a great actor.
When the wine glass breaks, his face made me crack up so bad, I was laughing to the point of tears!
Watched this with a friend and we both burst out laughing at the toast. We ended up turning back the movie and re-watching it multiple times, laughing equally each time.
That B&W cinematography, though. Everything looks so good.
R.I.P. Gene (Wilder)
He is still alive.
uhh....no he is not

gene hackman absolutely slays this scene hahaha what a movie!
The first time I saw this I was literally rolling on the floor. All the more so for how Gene Hackman is so well known for playing hard man, serious roles. I can count the films that have made me laugh as much as that one on one hand.
They had to cut to black fast after the "espresso" line. Gene had ad-libbed it. The crew busted up.
"Cigars."
3:22 "CIGARS!!" hahahaha his face as he said it was priceless
Seegars! Lol
I love that moment too 😂
Priceless!
Everything about this scene is perfect - the performances, the set up, the direction, the reverence for pure slapstick. Love it.
They don't make movies like this anymore. One of the funniest scenes in comedy, past or present. Brilliant :)
The Emperor’s New Groove is just as hilarious.
unbelievably brilliant. the greatest comedy ever filmed.
One of the funniest movies ever
For my entire life, my father would always say "But wait, I was going to make espresso!" whenever someone abruptly left or he wanted to keep talking. It wasn't until I caught this film on tv that I realized where he got it from.
This is a true masterpiece of comedy. The acting and timing is perfect.
"Fire is good!"
Fire is our friend
This pure simple comedy at its best. Scene never stops being funny as Hell. 🤣
I had a party at my home some years back. Near the end of the party (there were probably 20 people left), I decided to turn off the music and put a Young Frankenstein DVD on the tv. Nobody left for the entire movie, and half way through, the entire party was a in chorus of laughter-me included. This movie is so friggin' funny even today!...and as far as I know, no pot was involved in the laughter...just honest hard, stomach wrenching laughs.
Les Wahl
... yeah it's a timeless thing some funny things are just pure D funny, high or not...this has GOT to be watched straight.
Peter Boyle is hilarious without a single line of dialogue. His facial expressions and reactions are fantastic.
That's acting!
Love the face on the monster when the priest crashes his wine mug.
This movie is a comical masterpiece.
It's still amazing when we see actors known for dramatic roles break us up when given the oppoprtunity to do comedy. Gene Hackman here, Leslie Nielsen and Peter Graves in "Airplane", and, some years back, Lee Marvin in "Cat Ballou". Makes it all the more funny.
Everything well done. Thank you and RIP: Peter Boyle, Gene Wilder, Mary Feldman, Madalene Kahn.
I saw this movie when I was younger and my two older brothers told me he was Gene Hackman and they were laughing out loud. Not only a great actor, but a comic man.
"I was going to make Espresso". HE WOULD HAVE KILLED HIM WITH THE ESPRESSO!!!!!
Yes, the script is great. Directed by the best, no question. In the end, though, this movie lives from the outstanding casting. Hackman and Boyle deliver absolute perfection in this small scene. Comedy is the hardest of all the dramatic arts and they pull it off with ease and brilliance.
Quite simply one of the greatest scenes in subtle comedy, ever.
Comedy is timeless.
Great movie , ground breaking and so very funny . Brava Bravo to Madeline Kahn and Gene Wilder , and the fantastic cast ! I Love the 70’s !
Gene Hackman's versatility was on display. Iconic scene.
My favorite laugh out loud scene, EVERYTIME I SEE IT!!
Gene Hackman is simply one of the greatest versatile actors of all-time! The man is just great in everything!
I love how the priest immediately thinks friend when he hears loud growling sounds.
Frankenstein's monster was not afraid of pitchforks, and angry peasants, and fire and priests.
He was terrified of Mr Hackman..
2:20 that face and grunt gets me every time!! 😅😅😅😅
Comedy like this sadly dosent exist anymore
Sadly, so true.
@@dianetheisen8664 Comedy changes all the time.

After 40 years.. Its still comedy GOLD... No.. Platinum.
Im sure everyone can image what Frankenstein was thinking here at 03:06
That LOOK..... LOL.. cracks me up everytime!!
Lex Luther serves you soup say no. Lex Luther does know how to kill Frankenstein, he just needs to use espresso
Soup and Cigars...deadlier weapons than Kryptonite.

This video is for some reason very therapeutic.
Cigars!...*looks off camera*. just that part alone! No over the top antics or expletives...just. that subtle humor makes this timeless
4:39 apparently the entire studio erupted in laughter right after he said that.
There's no way I could have kept a straight face if I was on the set. I still laugh when I see this. Hackman is hilarious.
Brilliant, just brilliant
They never stay for the espresso, darn it.
Detail after detail make this scene a masterpiece. Just an endless supply of comic Easter Eggs. The comments mention many others, but my favorite is the coldness of his hands makes the thumb indistinguishable from and feel like the inanimate cigar.
Personally this is my all time favorite scene with Gene. Yes, he is gifted in dramatic roles but because this was such a departure from his normal typecast..It was my favorite. His blind man chemistry with Peter was priceless.
Hackman says it was his favorite role ever.
One of the funniest scenes ever filmed. Brilliant physical comedy and the lines spoken are simly amazing. Kudos to all involved in this masterpiece.
I love the facial expression when Gene Hackman says "Cigars!" and then looks PAST the cigars to the side as would be expected if one can't actually see them. It's a small but genius acting detail, absolutely hilarious!
Then, as the monster walks up and leaves, Gene Hackman just stares empty in the distance like; "woah, where the hell is he?" And to know that Gene Hackman is just acting, that he isn't blind at all, makes it even funnier. What an absolute classic scene! And Peter Boyle is great as the monster as well
Simon Eriksson spot on! your absolutely
I saw this movie when I was 16 at my friends house. We laughed his "Cigars!" facial expression for weeks.
This scene is just a funny as the first time I saw it in the 70s 😂😂😂
This part never gets old! It still hilarious!!
Mel's greatest film. Hysterical.
One of the best movies Mel made, and a favourite scene. Thanks for sharing.

3:05 I love the look of exasperation on the monster's face here. He's like: "Really??"
Everybody loves Raymond dad. The monster. FRANK!
He makes a tongue-in-cheek visual reference to the movie in this episode, with his cheesy makeup.
