Tom Sawyer has been banned in some libraries and schools due to the n word. People don't watch it they just hear it has the n word and it has to go. No one should watch it. If you don't believe they exist you are sadly mistaken. Much is disappearing because facts are somehow offensive to some wven though it has no impact on them but to tell the truth of history as far as the truth us allowed into it. Sorry but a lot of people would like to see this movie go and it is a damn shame. This clip won't last I guarantee it.

Cleavon Little was a brilliant actor and individual who graduated from San Diego State University and received a scholarship to the Julliard school, American Academy of Dramatic Art. He would have NEVER signed on to a movie that made sport of blacks, period. He did it because this movie had an anti-racist theme. He was absolutely great in "Vanishing Point" (the original film) as Super Soul, the psychic disc jockey. If you haven't seen it, you haven't seen great acting. Sadly he died young at 53 from cancer. That's the thing. We don't need to. This is satirizing whitewashed Westerns, showing an admittey ridiculous, but more realistic version of the West as a whole. At the time, what was made was bland westerns with little violence, no blood, black-and-white villains. The point of this was to show how they were ridiculous, how bland and uninspired. And it did it well. Nobody could make this today because we don't have that anymore. These days, westerns are always gritty.

Richard Pryor was one of the main screenwriters for this movie. It caused such a firestorm when it first came out. They just saw some of the scenes and assumed it was going to be totally racist.

IslandGirl 9152, Richard Pryor was supposed to star in the movie, but Warner Bros. said they would pull their financing. Hence, Cleavon Little as Bart.

Darrin Baker Actually the real reason why Richard Pryor Did not play the part was this was during a time when he was heavily using drugs and became very on reliable to show up on the set and perform. But still with Incredible comedic talent they kept them on as one of the writers and contributed so much. This was documented When they made the making of blazing saddles and interviewed Mel Brooks.

mel wanted Pryor as the sheriff and john wayne as the part gene wilder got. that part was not a funny part until Wayne refused because, although he laughed at the lines, he felt it would hurt his wholesome on screen image. mel's second choice had been battling alcoholism for years and , basically died during one of his first scenes. Wilder was an emergency last minute replacement and Mel new Wilder wouldn't work as a straight, tough guy.
Pryor was rejected by the studio for too much sex ,drugs and rock and roll.
the only real firestorm was from the studio, not the public. back then, people accepted race jokes if done properly. in this case, the scene started as racist towards blacks but ended as showing the racists as really stupid. so, it balanced out.
the studio tried to change some scenes, remove some jokes, but because of the contract Mel had, they couldn't. only thing they could do was refuse to release it, which they tried, but Mel did private screenings and the response was so positive, they had to release it.
the one Joke Mel could not keep in was when the dancer was in the dark with the sheriff and asking if it was true about black men, then you hear a zipper and she says, it's true!. the line that followed was, that's my arm you are sucking on.

Truly an astonishing movie and one of my childhood favorites. An incredible cast with impeccable timing and grace who present a perfect anti-racism tone without being preachy. This movie would never be allowed today by the risk averse studios, but thank goodness Mel made it. Cleavon who I would normally have thought of as a serious actor just nails the comedy demonstrating his incredible range and skill. Gene of course is perfect as always, demonstrating perfect comedic timing along with warmth.
