    The problem with Wenger was, after 2006, no one can confidently claim that the players he had were better than the players Chelsea, Utd, and Lipool. Before Emirates, Wenger bought quality players like Pires, Henry, Campbell. After 2007, he hardly bought any expensive player since Arsenal reverted to saving.

    Great point by Rory saying Liverpool had the best midfield in the world, lasted 3 years and got to 2 champions league finals and a 2nd in the league. Gerrard played in a better team than Lampard for about 3/4 seasons in his career, Lampard stats are much greater due to how good those Chelsea teams were. Gerrard the more complete player, turned up in the big moments.

    Here’s a stat for you.. Gerrard had alonso and mascherano together behind/next to him for only two years… Gerrard scored 45 goals and 31 assists in those two years. 76 goal contributions. Lampard had this luxury his whole career. Imagine if Gerrard did. Also when Gerrard played DM for a whole season in 13/14 he got 14 goals and 16 assists, 30 goal contributions!! … FROM DM!! He was world class at every footballing attribute you could think of and could play at a world class level in every position on the pitch baring CB and GK. you cannot say the same for any other midfielder in English history imo. He was clear of everyone. Simple.

      Spot on👌🏻 Rory’s out there creating his own “myths”. Mourinho was desperate to sign Gerrard for Chelsea, Real and Inter- no surprise. Rory also mentions “he had Torres”, “he had Carragher”… which is almost funny. In actual fact even Torres admits that his peak form owed plenty to Gerrard; he declined at Chelsea.

    • @noelgeorge3947
      @noelgeorge3947 Před 2 lety +12

      Haha lol.. I love it how Gerrard fans trash their own team to say that he is the best. Their stance is Liverpool had a lot of mediocre players and hence Gerrard didn't get even close to the stats that Lampard has. Funnily enough that argument poses as a double edge sword. Only reason Gerrard looked as good as he did is because he was surrounded by mediocre players which helped him stand out. Just like Bale at Tottenham. Love Gerrard and closest player after Lampard. But didn't come close to him.

    • @terencephilips1162
      @terencephilips1162 Před 2 lety +5

      And it shouldn't be only the midfield that's considered.
      Lampard was a system player, who thrived playing in an uber compact team, that packed central areas and enabled him to make attacking runs off the ball. For his skillset, Drogba was the perfect player to play off, not to mention the midfielders and defenders.
      Rory says - people think Gerrard is better but the stats don't bear it out. Then sites - people think Gerrard is the better passer, but Lampard had more assists. Lampard has more assists than Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo - was he a better passer? Lampard was perhaps a more accurate short passer, but Gerrard was able to whip medium to long range passes, it's why he could cross. Gerrard's passing was a weapon - Lampard's simply wasn;t.
      And Gerrard had acceleration and could beat a man. Lampard didn't and couldn't.
      Rory's point seems to be that the stats are on Lampard's side, but he is choosing to only look at goals and assists. It's data and stats all the way down - why not dig deeper.
      I don't really have a problem thinking people Lampard was the better player - he was fantastic. But Rory's argumentation is really poor.

      That assist stat rory talks abt when you actually look at it gerrard and lampards assists per game ratio are practically identical meaning gerrard was getting assists at the same rate lampard did just gerrard didnt play as long so didnt accumulate the same number.
      Even the goals scored stat isnt that useful (only using goals scored in the prem) obv frank scored more but when you look more into it the goals per game ratio of the 2 arent that far apart with gerrards being abt .24 and lampards being .33 so .09 difference and you cant tell me that bc of that .09 difference that lampard was this other worldly scorer compared to gerrard and obv lamps was going to have a higher ratio he played closer to goal his role was to score gerrards wasnt

Also Hazard has to play under like 5 different managers and still put up numbers. Who else has done that?

I don't necessarily think it changes who is better or not, I just think it should have been brought up in the conversation. Wenger wasn't saying that his players couldn't think for themselves and needed play by play coaching through a game, or describing them as awful or wastes of space. That Salah agenda from Shaun still bothers me today. How can you not be impressed from a guy in 2017/18 scored 32 goals in a season, beat Shearer, Ronaldo and Suarez record. Year after he won golden boot again with Mane and I can agree that Mane had a better year than Salah in 2019. 2019/20 Salah again scored more goals and more assists than Mane. 2020/21 when van Dijk, Matip and Gomez were injured. Salah carried them to top 4. If Salah also were injured, they would not finish in top 4. Mo Salah playing wise is much more gifted than Mane. Salah is also an athlete since his greatest assets are his pace and endurance. If you know that there’s a reason why both mane and Salah have such absurdly high xG in comparison to the rest of the league. It’s the system. Any football person knows that when you watch Salah plays he’s not carrying a dead team like Hazard/Sanchez/Bale because he simply doesn’t have the tech. Liverpool’s elite forward pressing system gives him so many chances and since he’s a better finisher than Mane he’s always top of the scoring sheets. Don’t me wrong, he’s an excellent system player, but he’s not a better player than Suarez, Ronaldo, Bale, Hazard etc

      And we also saw that Liverpool last season when Mane and Firmino underperformed and had a cb-pairing with Phillips and Kabak. They still finished top 4 thanks to Salah's crucial goals. Salah's prime is better than prime Bale and prime Hazard. Suarez and Ronaldo I agree with you.

    Wenger and co betted heavily on FFP playing a huge role in football, and that's where things went horribly wrong for them. Im genuinely surprised by how close Wenger vs Mourinho is, i can't even pick tbh.

      Madness, ronaldo was just a much better player overall than salah was, not to mention that he won balon dor. Say what u want about balon dor but in 2007, he got 2nd, won it in 2008, and came second in 2009, and thats at the age of 24, salah is nearly 30 and has yet to nake a podium finish in balon dor.

    It's a bit redundant to say Mourinho won the same amount of premier leagues in half the time of Wenger. The two operated under completely different circumstances. Post-Highbury Wenger was having to sell his best players year on year and replaced them with players at a fraction of the price. Mourinho goes to Chelsea, 1st season spends £100m, 2nd season spends £50m, 3rd season spends £55m. (Spending that kinda money back then was mental) Returns to Chelsea and spends big money again on Costa, Fabregas, Willian etc.
    Excluding 2014-18, years that were the outlier, Wenger didn't have the luxury of spending that kind of money.

    Simple way to look at it guys, even though i rate Lampard really highly, if Lampard was in that Liverpool team over the years, they wouldn't have achieved what Gerrard has achieved with Liverpool at that time, Gerrard had carried shit liverpool sides single handedly and got them over the line, also Gerrard was more completed player on pure ability and versatility, so there u have it, the choice is yours guys.

    😂 Comparing Salah to Ronaldo, even just in the Prem, is absolute madness. Say what you like about the Ballon d'Or, but if Salah was that good, he'd have won it by now. Ronaldo came 2nd in the Ballon d'Or to Kaká in 2007, *won* the Ballon d'Or 2008 and came 2nd to Messi in 2009. That was all by the age of 24. Salah turns 30 this year and has never even made a podium. You think 2008 Ronaldo wouldn't be miles clear of this Messi and Lewandowski? Besides stats and the eye test, I thought I should drop that VERY revealing piece of information.
