- In this video we compare the max speeds of 2 different inline speed skating propulsion techniques -- The single-push and the double-push techniques. We use the fitness app Strava to compare maximum speeds over 6 different iterations to come to a conclusion on which is faster...and by how much.

What's p push?
I've always noticed something different with speed skaters' push but I never could put my finger on it. Just seemed to flow better, but didn't realize it's a different style.
Ahhhh got it now.
It’s like skipping for me at least I use to do it when I use jump stairs , but like you said I didn’t know it was style 😆
I always thought speed skating is a funny style, but I’m also forgetting how fun it really is. Nothing is more satisfying skating backwards. Which I hope you make video about backward skating! Awesome video as always!
Thanks Jake! I have a video on the channel here I did on skating backwards a couple months ago. You’ll see it on the channel “how to skate backwards”
It is not about moving your legs like this, rather about letting your weight fall on the shoulder where you rest the skate and that your body swings towards the opposite side, causing the momentum only with your body, and this is what saves energy in big marathons
🤝🤝
Another great video. I just happened to see Joey's double push video the other day. You definitely want faster with the double, but I think it's most important benefit is the efficiency. Using both edges of the wheels and incorporating more muscles each push.
💯💯 totally. Thanks Chris! Joey is the goat.
Great analysis. Thanks for the interesting watch! 🤓
Thanks Bryce! 😎😎
Those skates really fly! Maybe we can meet up with Joey when you visit Florida. We could hit the new Ocala skatepark and then meet him(assuming he still lives there)
That would be dope!
I knew you were speeding on the trail 🤣 max speed 15mph. I never knew about pushing like that. I learned something new today.
😆😆👍👍
I know you're in great shape relative to *most* of us, but it doesn't look like the inside stroke was 'complete'. Perhaps relatively weak adductors that can't pull your leg all the way across the midline while skating. That's something that should just develop over time if you do it more though, so I think this is a video completely worth revisiting when you have a little more time in skating double push in 2-3 months. Perhaps with a Garmin measuring FTP over both styles as a direct comparison.
In my younger days I use to skate a two footed carve-weave that was just as fast on the wheels as a regular push, but wasn't skating a straight line -- I'm definitely not in shape or strong enough to do that anymore, it doesn't even feel good to do it again yet, but seeing this it would have had both the inside and outside skating motion on both legs, so it makes sense why it worked. And intuitively this seems like it would be more efficient since the heart doesn't have to shunt blood from leg to leg quite as fast.
Totally, was seeing that in the footage afterwards, thanks for the feedback Daniel!
interesting upload, thanks for making a comparison. I enjoy watching speedskating, I have also started looking at getting a better, more efficiant skating technique and therefore speed. Joey Mantia is an amazing Olympic athlete, so is Viktor Thorup, both have many uploads about the double push....
Do you need a smart watch? I'm training for ice cross, I crash a lot but mph tracking would be nice. My phone is pretty bulletproof but watches are kind of out if the question I think
how much more energy are you expending for the double push?
It’s actually more efficient and uses less energy when applied correctly. Marathon skaters use this technique to carry more speed with less effort.
How many total years have you been skating?
🐐
Wouldn't average speed be a fairer measure and less prone to Strava GPS glitches? Looking at your average speeds, wasn't single push faster? Cool video. You're exceptionally fast regardless!
i think the double push is also more efficient for long distance and make it much faster in the long run.
Did you check the double push video tutorial from my channel?
Cool video btw
Tbh I think i just looked at mantias. Thank you for the comment 👍👍
Joey Mantia might be a legend but Chad Hedrick will always be the GOAT, chad is the one that discovered and developed the double push back in the mid 90s.
I would say it’s a misnomer in that it’s not really a double push; it’s more of a single push with a better glide.
Double push looks majestically better man
I had already on my own developed the habit of rolling slightly to the outside edge on each new stride.
Now, actually putting some power into the outside edge instead of just coasting before doing a normal push...THAT is gonna take some work.
Interesting
I seriously have no clue what’s going on here, but I’m fascinated because I know I can do it and I rollerblade everyday I just cannot tell the difference between the 2 hasn’t clicked yet lol
That first reading was a fluke. I get 30mph with Strava sometimes and it's when the app can't get a GPS reading and comes back it's wildly off. The 3rd reading is probably the most accurate
Thanks Jessie 👍👍
A longer frame will help with speed and your double push. Check out endless frames. One frame = 4x90 & 3x110
What he really needs is a 4x110
Definitely may look into a longer frame, just going to skate them stock for now. Thanks for the input!
Chad hedrick ..5 x 80 record. Equipment is less important than skill. @@jessiecassio8349
I call it the trouble push, cuz everytime I try to do it correctly I get into trouble :D
You might want to get some lower cut speed skates to effectively do the double push - those high cuffs aren’t letting you edge the way you need to. You need to get out on your outside edges and a high boot just doesn’t allow for the right technique.
Thank you for the advice
i dont know man from your side it look the same, leg doesnt goes toomuch in =\
Strava on mobile phones is very not accurate.
When I switched to smart watch with GPS - I found that all that beautiful high speeds from phone were just wrong readings when Strava was pointing me out of trail and then back, which was creating a sudden increase of speed.
I recommend to do this test with some Garmin device.
U should take those to the Skate Park and get mad air bro.... double push then stair roll ohhhhhhhhh
Thinking I just may!
For sure the 30 mph doble push is a wrong measure. Skating like that with those skates I doubt you can reach that speed
double push is just another gear you use when your skating. the better skater you become the more gears you have.
🤣😅
