    Transitioning to skating in an urban environment opens up a whole new world. We asked urban and park skater Danny Aldridge to share his advice for people who want to test the waters of this creative way to enjoy your environment and your skates. Two key points to consider: First, in urban skating there is movement all around you; people, cars, buses, strollers, etc. Second, urban skating encompasses a huge variety of terrain; cobblestone, grates, asphalt, granite, concrete, etc. As an urban skater you must master the basics and employ all the necessary safety gear.
    He explains his choice of skates. In this video he rides the Rollerblade® RB 110 3WD skate. Danny walks through the basics for urban rides like how to start quickly, how to stop using the T-Stop, and how to turn in a small space, and the correct body position for ultimate control. In an urban setting you will encounter obstacles in your direct path. Danny shows you how to jump them with the perfect pop and jump. Then he shares his tip on how to land compressed and roll away smooth.
    We hope you enjoy this tutorial on urban skating. Danny had a blast putting it together and hope it helps you expand your skating environment. In every environment you skate in Rollerblade® encourages you to be safe, be respectful of your fellow humans, and have fun!

    I'd add: if you fall you'd better have put your pads on! If a pedestrian "helpfully" moves into your path, it's your responsibility! Momentum is your friend over rough surfaces, typically found where you have to stop! Be decisive and make it clear to others where you are going. No shame in using a heel brake until you've mastered other stopping methods. Maintain a low profile, only kids should notice you (you know this when they say "wow!" to their parents.)

      If the block is wide enough for two people you should be able to carve side to side and lose speed. Gonna end up doing it anyway with people around. Wont look as smooth but you could just balance on one leg and let the other trail behind to slow down.
      Me? Im crouching and shooting down that. 1.) It's steep baby lets go we gliding on em! 2.) If pedestrians and other trash are in the way of me enjoying a sick drop, I may as well just keep things brief.
      Week ago a fucking turkey popped up on the side walk outta nowhere I literally dove into the street (thing might retaliate if threatened, and out of the two of us I am in less danger of going straight into a car). Just think of people and animals as hazards like walls or columns or something (the kind you dont wallride on tho...)

      @rodriogq Před 4 lety +1

      i find that it's easy to control my speed doing bends and curves. i'm even starting to merge a bend into a backwards curve which really help losing speed. this is my go-to halt when i feel like i'm getting too fast. when i first started skating amidst people, i'd make sure to go very slow, and i found that having having your feet wide apart and at a closed angle to the floor, as in having the intention of doing the compass move (? not sure how it's called in english? it's like opening your legs wide apart and then closing them, coming to a halt. very basic stuff) helps keep moderate speed gain at manageable levels. on top of that, i'm always reminding myself that there is no need to speed up when i'm still learning. been skating out and about for over 4 months now. hope those tips make sense and help!!

    • @uglypinkeraser
      @uglypinkeraser Před 4 lety +2

      @@rodriogq This move in English is called a snow plow, I usually hear that in reference to ice skates and its more of a slide on ice, but its the same body position. I've heard it called a "pizza stop" on wheels but its not a common term. The mechanism is the same but on ice its a slide, on roller you absorb all the energy with your leg muscles.
      While descending very steep hills I like to manage speed by carving so far you actually point uphill for a second, then rolling backwards downhill and carving back the other direction till you're rolling uphill again. Taking small bites out of the hill until you get to the bottom, it takes a bit of space to do it and its tricky with people on the trail but it beats walking.

      Man... This is how I learned it. Try to spend some time working on keeping your weight and balance on one single leg. (Check both legs e choose the one you get it better).
      Spend some time just rolling and balancing over that leg. When you comfortable on doing this, try to put the other leg back in a L position (not a T)... And, at first moment, don't focus on break fast with that back foot. Just position that leg well, and put the less weight you can on that back leg. You gonna stop on longer distance. But once you keep the balance on that L position (not T, this is really important) you will be able to put more and more pressure on back leg and stop shorter and shorter

      @dmofOfficial Před 5 lety +17

      He has three wheels cause they're too large to fit four on his frames. If you're starting out, go with four wheels until you feel in control and want more speed. There's plenty of speed to be had with four wheels. I'm not sure about urban skates, but aggressive skates use a Universal Frame System (UFS). The frame is the part that holds the wheels. These UFS frames are easily interchangeable, especially with the four-wheel setup. The point of UFS is so that if you find a boot that you really like, then you can just replace or inter-change frame/wheels together in one shot. This means that if you start with a good boot that uses a UFS-style frame, then you can more affordably upgrade and swap between 3/4-wheel setups. I also mention this because a 3-wheel setup will require a different frame than a 4-wheel setup. Rollerblade is usually extremely good and using such parts (UFS) in their products. Been rocking RB products since 1992 (hockey and aggressive). Have fun!

If you hit a stone or a twig or something else then being low and having your knees well bent makes all the difference to staying up or hitting the deck. I also prefer a rockered setup which allows you to put the weight on your heals if the pavement slabs are uneven and you need to role over a lip which is a serious problem where I live.

      He looks like he put a different liner.. Can't really tell for sure. Also they look too big, the cuff is bolted shut almost all the way the two sides are touching

    Hey Danny, great video, I honestly enjoyed how you take everybody on this ride-alone through the city areas. You not only give us the safety tips and tricks, but you also demonstrate this right after. You speak very clear and your camera man does an excellent job at following, kudos! for that effort, and I found it super cool how both of you avoided hitting people around you seamlessly. I'm a fan and subscribed to your channel bc I was looking and researching for basically someone like you, to teach me and give me first hand experience with out any hassles. I liked your RB 110 3WD skates, they look amazing btw, might just be the ones I'm looking to buy as my first pair of skates. Thank you guys for making awesome reviews, tips, safety and tricks type of videos, I truly enjoyed this video. Keep up the great work!

    Danny, realy valuable information. However, I am an urban skate beginner and really do not know which skates to buy. At the moment I skate on my Bauer Xtra 5.5, in our private parking garage to get ready for the real stuff (downtown Rotterdam (Netherlands)). Your advice is welcome.

    Hi, like that very much. Really nice place. If I go to my town in Germany, the problem is that there are not so many flat places, it goes up or it goes down and maybe flat in between. On your video, it looks like there are never hills. Would be appreciated if you could explain how to go downhill and what breaking technic to use for urban skaters and what is the best technic tips. Think there are some, as the place you have to break is much smaller sometimes and there are more obstacles than on the wide area places.
