Regarding 4.: Different manufactures vary wildly in width. Powerslide are notorious narrow, K2 & Rollerblade are in the middle and FR-Skates are perfect for wide feet. Those are the brands I could test myself, just keep on trying different skates and check their size sheets. A few manufactures include also the width (Powerslide i.e) so you can measure your foot and check beforehand.

90s skater here, thinking about getting back into it in my 40s... Totally agree with these mate. The bail one made me think a bit; back in the day, knee and handpads were a big thing, helmets not so much but just having knee pads on especially on pipe or bowls meant you can just drop to your knees and slide out the bail. All the new videos I've seen people have helmets, etc but no knee pads. Weird. I guess back in the 90s big knee pads would go under those big baggy jeans easy :)

These are highly Valid points. I knew what you'd be talking about before i clicked on the video. I'm so desperate for a brick and mortar inline skate shop in birmingham I'm tempted to sell all my assets and open a shop myself. I'm surprised Loco Skates haven't set up here. Their in london, WHY NOT COME TO BRUM PLEZEEEEEEE.
Also the lack of other inline skaters hurts too. I only have one skater friend, who I'm thankful for. We blast through town together all the time but meeting people who are per say veterans that i can learn from would be dope.
And yeh my body gets mash up from skating all the time. It's just part of the life to eat s**t sometimes.
I also hate pedestrians who try to tell me inline skating is illegal or some dumb thing like that. But it's made up for all the looks of awe I get from everyone else.
I also hate the quality of the roads around brum😭. City center is great, and brum in general is full of good spots. But a lot of it is a war zone.
One thing i dislike aswell is that does cost some money to get into it. It's cheaper than a lot of hobbies, but costs more than the casual cheap thrills people commonly choose. It's worth it though. More than any other money I've spent skating is worth it. That's the main thing i try to tell people getting into it. But ye money is money.
Despite any things that bring it down. Skating is still amazing. Whatever money, time, sweat and literal blood you pour into it. Skating gives it back to you tenfold. Well mabye not the money but you know what i mean.

I think the fact that skating is a dry weather only activity grinds my gears, especially in a country where it rains a lot. • @1nnu3ndo
    @1nnu3ndo Před rokem +6

My main issue is the weather dependence. No matter what I promise myself during the nice months, I always drop off on my activity come winter. This in turn results on me gaining weight and needing to re-learn my technique and balance to adjust for the extra weight in spring. Takes a few weeks to get back into it, then at the end of summer rinse and repeat.
Another point is beautiful spots to skate with horrible unsuitable surfaces. It's very frustrating.

No.1 also sucks cause when you tell people you inline skate and not skateboard or quad, they don't really know how sick the sport is cause its not as popular. Haha, great idea! Love the creative negativity. 😄
You've listed five valid and recognisable points, though I'm a lucky bastard with a brick & mortar skateshop at about 20 minutes skating. Some inline skaters from neighbouring cities have to drive for more than an hour to get there. Also, most evenings, there are other bladers at the skatepark, which is also nice.
I do hope that the rise of rollerblading also results in more physical shops, everywhere in the world. A lot of people quit this sport because they accidentally ordered skates in the wrong size and a physical shop is the best way to avoid that kind of disappointment.
But let's ignore those disadvantages and just keep rollin'. 😉

As a skater who started skating at 31 and still rolling 8 years later, I have my 2 cents worth of things that can dampen that elation you get when you roll with wheels on your feet.
    1. That awkward period in the beginning when you are a "Dad Skater" who accompany their children to the skate rink. First it was for them, but they quickly grow out of it and you end up going solely for yourself after having wheels on your feet makes you feel young again.
    2. Falling down and getting injured takes longer to heal now that you're in your thirties. You may live with a measure of regret for not starting to skate when you were younger.
    3. After joining a facebook skating group and going out to organised weekly events, I often feel a bit guilty for leaving the spouse and children at home to spend time with my skate family.

      Yeah, point #2.
When I was 14 I hung out with friends a lot at skateparks. I tried skateboarding then, but never pushed myself to try much.
I tried to take up inline skating in 2018 because I wanted to exercise with my dog, but was too afraid to be in public learning. A few weeks ago I finally gave it a go.
By now I could have had either 19 years or 5 years of experience had I picked it up when I wanted to..

*I sweat profusely! Even when out for a ‘casual’ roll a come back literally dripping with sweat! 😂

I hear ya on the lack of inline skaters, who skate at or near my level. I'm a high beginner-intermediate skater, and although there are people who skate near me, most are either expert level or super novice. So hard to find the right fit of friends to do this activity. And with the commenter below on skating being a dry weather activity, that seems to go with most outdoor sports. So when wet I just find a covered parking lot and skate there. Not as fun, but better than nothing. Another gripe I have is that the boots are so hot, especially in the summer. Although my boots fit well, it feels so good to get them off after a long session, just to cool off my feet. Other than that, I love skating.

I live in the Boston area 10 minutes away from Thuro Skate Shop. Although they have a policy where it is by appointment only and you have to buy online then pickup, you still have the fortune to try the skates on before committing to the purchase. Another thing is that they are involved in the skate community and are a meeting place for group outings. Did I mention they have a huge inventory? That's a huge plus. Great video.

Ah the first one, I get that a lot. In reality I guess people need to clarify and skateboarding is the most common so it's the go to... The rest I agree with. It's disheartening that there are no inline dedicated stores locally, just stores that are willing to stock a select few inline skates in a single size.

It’s really hard to look things up as an in-line skater because you really can’t rely on reviews from the items cause there aren’t any. You really just have to hope one of the youtubers have done a review on the skate.

I agree with everything you said. Back home we have some shops that you can go to the window, ask for what you need , pay and be on your way.. but since I moved to UK, I'm not able to go shopping on my skates without having some kind of shoes in my backpack ... Which is kind of frustrating. I know there are some quads which allow you to take the wheels off and use them as shoes.. but I inline skate, not quad skate.. so.. for me is pointless. And the shops reason for it is that we're ruining their floors. I honestly find it's a stupid reason.
When I was a teen (2000) we were a group of 7 people who used to set a time to meet and skate together.. now people are looking at you funny when they see you on skates. At least here.. they expect only kids to skate...

I dislike the lack of width options and custom sizing of skates. You are sort of forced into a brand of skate boot depending on the width of your foot. I love how hockey skates have narrow, normal, wide, extra wide, and even EE wide. Truly let's you customize the width and length for that glove-like fit.
Another is just it's too damn hot where I live to skate outside of fall/winter time. Dry desert heat is brutal, so I'm kind of stuck to garage skating, but thankfully it doesn't rain much in the winter. Seeing another skater in the wild is sort of like seeing a unicorn though and I always feel like doing the Leo point meme, like hey!! one of us :P

Skating location limitation is in people's heads. One of the reason I love skating is that it expands training sessions options, not limits them.
One or two cones routines in your living room or in the kitchen.
Nearby parking lots (without or even with more cones than in your kitchen)
    Garages
Ground floor perimeters of some smart companies' (mind their business hours and overtime workers will "forgive" you for rainy weekend or night sessions)
Exploration of places during business or leisure travel. Try to take your skate board as a cabin luggage, not to mention - a bike.
All those places are perfect for work on skate handling skills, which will make you faster and more confident on smooth trails every time when you can drive and skate there. You might not even need those trails that much: urban skating may satisfy.

But you never see them skate outside of the track. The parents just sit on a lawn chair and watch their kids skate.
I've been skating since it all began. I used to drive tour buses in Canada and the US. I took my skates with me everywhere back in the 90's. I would do a trip to NYC and meet a ton of people on skates. You would have 10 new friends in an afternoon in Central Park skating or skating Battery Park and the lower West side.

I did roller blades first when I was young and then went to skateboarding. I always missed it. I was pretty good. But, just followed the trend at the time. I got good at skateboarding too. Late teens developed a staff infection in my leg that took me out of skating. It took 4 surgeries and a month in the hospital to get rid of the infection. A whole went by till I was able to skateboard again and my legs were never the same. I was never able to get back to the level I was at. I got very hurt trying to do the things I used to. So, I gave it up eventually. That was when I was 16-19 I’m now 32. Just the other day my family said they were going to the roller rink. I didn’t even know they were still around. I took my daughter and we had a blast. It felt good to rollerblade again. Was a little shaky but got it back pretty fast. I’m mad at myself that I followed the teen trend back then and gave it up. Now I don’t care what people think. So for now, I have no complaints lol. I’m sure they will all come but for now, I’m enjoying this once loved activity. And I’m so happy to have my little ones join me. It will be a great lesson of, do what you love. And who cares what other think.

I used my sisters rolerblade “Lightning’s” haha I just recently took my kids roller skating at the local indoor rink and I rented inlines and I was slightly nervous but I totally picked it right back up no problem! The rentals were terribly stiff and beat the hell out of my feet and so I ordered some Macroblade 80’s I figure for the price and the amount of skating I may or may not be able to do, those skates will be just fine.
I mostly urban skated and skated those lightnings for two summers until I couldn’t cram my foot in them anymore. Unfortunately I never had a pair after that but I got into some stalls and jumps and there was this skate spot we called”Beauty Banks” because it was in the parking lot of a beauty college and had perfect hips and rollers you could jump and pump like a paved pump track. Haha good memories.

i really do miss having skate shops where you could try on inlines. if i had been living in the house i'm at now but like 15 years ago there would have been a skate shop like 6 blocks down the street. it was a local chain, they had three different locations in my area and they sold skateboards, skate shoes, inlines, snowboards, pretty much anything that was under the extreme sports category and it was great, that's where i got my first salomon's but then it stopped being popular and all three locations ended up closing

There would be skaters everywhere, even just going to work on their skates instead of public transport. When you went out, there would be famous comp winning skaters practicing all around, and YoutTube skaters making videos or hanging out. I've lived all over the world, that was the best for skating easily. Back in the day, Rollerblade made a convertible system called the Metroblade. I don't think it was terribly good. I see plenty of other attempts at the same thing, but skate frames need a really rigid attachment to your feet to work properly.

Where I live, in my city... We have a lot of pro rinks and even in big parks of the city we have a skating place, I recently started skating again and I was very surprised on how many people were there and the amount of skating schools they are in those free spaces to skate. Seems like people here are really into skating and competitions. Would be cool if your city had more spaces like those ones to promote fitness. I live in Bogota, Colombia

Taking my little dog for a 2 mile run (cavalier King Charles) is much easier on blades then my skateboard. I do still have a longboard skateboard and it’s much more difficult to control him if he wants to cross in front of my board as opposed to when I’m on inline skates.

Are you allowed to inline skate everywhere in the US? In Germany you have to use passengers way (side walk). Sometimes I use bicycle paths, but it's not meant to use them as an inline skater.
I'm pretty fast with them and I think it's quite dangerous for other people walking when rolling past them, instead of just using bike lanes where you can hold up with the speed.

    • @lisapet160
      @lisapet160 Před 2 lety +1

It's not regulated in most parts of US.
I thought that you can use the (very smart one-way) bike lines that are at the edge of sidewalks in Germany. And I bet that you are faster than most bike line users. So should be no objections. Anyway, thanks for the tip: I was sure that skating with pedestrians verboten ist, but it looks like everyone else had same opinion or just a common sense, so none was objecting.
