How To Paint A Bathtub Yourself | The STRONGEST & CHEAPEST Way To Refinish Your Bathtub!

- Today I'm sharing how to paint a bathtub yourself. I'll show you how to paint a bathtub, how to prep it beforehand and how to ventilate your bathroom to remove those harmful fumes. After doing a ton of research I decided to go with Rustoleum Marine Coatings Topside Paint instead of the Tub & Tile refinishing kit for a couple of reasons. A) It's cheaper! (Check it out, linked below) and B) the reviews I found on the product page all seemed to say this worked a lot better. Also, it comes ready to go instead of having to mix products together and has several color options!

Can this be done over ceramic tiles?
Yes, this paint will work on ceramic tile. Follow the same steps and sand the tile beforehand to make sure the paint will stick since tile is usually glazed.
How well did it hold up?
Really well! It looks almost exactly like it did on day one. This bathtub takes a beating, I can't believe how well it's held up. I'm working on the updated video. It is taking me longer than expected to get it done, but I'll have it posted soon.
Well I'm sold on this idea, great tutorial.
2 years later, how's it holding up? Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
I do this professionally and I gotta tell you that you got skillz lady. Nice job and even better job prepping.
Thank you so much all your tips and product suggestions make me feel like I COULD do this compared to other tutorials I’ve watched!
I have watched several video re painting bath tile and tub. Yours is the best. I love that you list the supplies. Great tips.
You did an amazing job! I love how mindful you were with your prep.
Thank you for the amount of details you added to this vlog. I ordered the paint and I'm going to follow your steps - to the T.
You inspire me. Thank you, again!
I’m so glad boat paint works so well. This is exactly what I bought for my RV shower. Thanks
This changes everything! The other channels need to talk about their personal lives and I see some editing but this seems really real. Thanks! I'm definitely going back to watch your other videos
I’m inspired! I have a list going so I can complete this project soon, thank you for explaining every little detail!
Thank you so much and you're welcome! Good luck with yours, I hope it goes great!
You were amazingly thorough in cleaning ❤️
Nice!!!❤❤ Thank you for speaking so clearly and such thorough steps. It came out great! I have a stand up shower that I will be doing
Getting ready to start doing this to my house ,thanks for teaching me.God bless you.
Looks very professional! ❤ very nice!
Fantastico! You're a Pro at this! You're the Best! Thank you for teaching us! 💜
You did a really good job! My bathroom is just like yours beige and I would like to paint. I gonna watch your video again and start to work! Thank you for sharing.
This is VERY freaking well done ma'am! You're amazing!
Now that I have looked at all the videos on CZcams regarding panting a bath tub, I have ended on the best and the last video. Thanks!
I didn't even think of that ! I have to do a bathroom and I happen to have left over topside from my daughters sailboat ⛵️ 🤟🏼😊thank you!
Excellent video. I will be using this one when we refinish our tub. Thank you!
What a hard worker !💪
You are amazing!😊
I just happened upon your video, and was SO blown away by your resourcefulness (vent fan and hose setup; research performed to choose the Rustoleum Marine Coatings Topside Paint instead of the Tub & Tile refinishing kit), thoroughness, and, simply, excellent video. You are quite the DiYer! Thanks for the inspiration.
You are amazingly thorough and clearly very talented at DIY projects! Thank you for sharing in such detail every step of this process. The tub/shower surround looks fabulous!
Thank you so much! ❤️
I love how you spoke it was careful and clear just right for the viewer
I’m impressed too. Excellent job. I’ve been watching numerous channels and yours is the best. Thank you so much. I’m going to get the marine paint and not the rustolium
Thank you so much! 😊 Good luck and I hope your tub turns out amazingly!
When i use this topside paint i use a 3/8 nap roller. It holds more paint and as you said it self levels. I noticed when using the foam roller i got more air bubbles in the paint giving me a more bubbly finish (this was actually on my boat) but i liked the durability of the product and was considering doing my soaker tub with it next. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for all the information you have gathered and informed me about vary well done 👏
I cannot understand why you only have 25.2k Subscribers! Your information sharing is the best I have found and I watch a LOT of home improvement videos. (And zero television.) Your list of items utilized in your videos and the timeline are very helpful. With over 2 million views it seems something is amiss. I do wish we could all manage to work at the speed in your videos, everyone would complete all their projects in less than a month. (That would be particularly helpful for me re repairing where I fell through my kitchen floor - twice. Not in the same place so there's 2 holes now. Water damage can be sneaky.)
Thank you, this is exactly what I’m looking for! My house is super ghetto and I’m just trying to make it look a little bit less ghetto because I’m hosting a huge Christmas family reunion. 😅
Oh man, that sounds like a lot of work in a short amount of time! Good luck with your projects and have a great Christmas family reunion!
Yo!! The way your comment made me holler! 😆😅😄 This was too funny!!
Just buy a new tub.. It will be cheaper in the long run..
@@dovespaligrino8312 it's never cheaper to buy a new tub. I can't afford a new tub but I can afford to refinish the one I have and there's a lot of people in the same situation. Even if I have to refinish it again after a few years it'll still cost me less than a new tub. But if you can afford a new tub that's great!
@@TheNiftyNesterI’m buying a new house, I’m soooo excited to be getting it. It’s a huge 1800’s house, but it’s so ugly, ugly paint, the ugliest pink toilet, pink sink, yellow and red wallpaper, I can go on. That’s not the worst of it, the sewer line is broken and the roof has some damage that HAS to be fixed, and the electrical is out of date so the whole house has to be reworked. 90k for the house but another 40k for the repairs alone, that doesn’t cover all the ugly stuff, hideous bathroom, horribly ugly kitchen, I need all new appliances etc. but of course now I’m broke and just can’t afford it. Being able to paint my tub, paint over old ugly “but in good shape” tiles etc is super cheap but still makes a huge difference until I can afford to replace the appliances. Btw we’re a family of 8 on one income, thanks for realizing not everyone in every situation can afford to just up and buy a new tub etc.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much!
You're welcome and thank you!
I've watched many diy videos, and I'd have to say this is one of the best I've ever seen. Nice work and thanks for taking the time to share
Thank you so very much for your kind comment!!! ❤️ I appreciate you!
Thank you for this! I'm redoing my house all on my own on a budget and looking for cheap good ways to do these big projects.
You're welcome and thank you! I'm glad this was helpful. It's a lot of work doing your own renovations but it's so rewarding and you will save so much money!
Thanks for the tip on this budget friendly alternative! Great work!
great job. love the ventilation tips.
You were very thorough throughout the process. It turned out very, very nice. Fine job.
Thank you so much!!! ❤️
Excellent video, awesome work and results!!! Thank you for a well done video, informative, with no rambling or babbling about stupid stuff, to the point and a job actually well done without cutting corners! I so wish many other youtubers would take a lesson from you!
Thank you so much! ❤ I try to not ramble, I tend to over explain sometimes so I'm really glad to hear that you didn't feel like I was doing that.
@@TheNiftyNester You did a fantastic job, both with the video and the editing, and with the actual job, like a total boss!!! Thank you so much!
The ventilation system that you created was super cool. We really liked the inline duct exhaust fan. Great job.
Thank you!
I like the ventilation system too. Hey, didn't I just subscribe to y'all? LOL
Hello! Great job . Do I need a ventilation system if I have a window in my bathroom ? Thanks ❤️
I have exhaust fan in bathroom, would that be sufficient? Should I keep bathroom door closed or open with doors and windows of house open.
If you have a window, then you can put a fan in that window, and that would be enough to exhaust the fumes. If you don't have a window, then you probably want to use a stronger exhaust fan than the one in your bathroom. Bathroom exhaust fans aren't usually very strong, so it just depends on how long it takes yours to circulate the air in your bathroom. You'll also want to keep the bathroom door closed or seal off the doorway so you don't fill the rest of your house with fumes. I hope that helps.
You are awesome. I love your matter of fact approach. I’m more confident to start now.
Thank you so much! ❤️ I'm glad this was helpful, good luck with yours!
What a really nice job very impressive, thank you for this video. I am definitely going to roll with your advice.Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just refinished my bathtub and the old bubbling sheet of tiles above it. I've been in this apartment 2 years and my landlord said she'd have the maintenance team do it when I moved in. She even already had the kit. She never did. I then asked her to recaulk last summer, as it as starting to mold and be difficult to clean. She kept saying the guy would be in touch and he never was. She's a very hands off landlord, doesn't care what I do, and my rent is ridiculously cheap in the midst of this housing crisis. So I started painting different areas of my little apartment that need a coat of paint. It's looking so much better! I finished the tub and shower surround in one day, two coats with two packages of Rust-Oleum tub and tile. Phew, it IS strong, even with an n95. Next time I'm buying a respirator. I had to take breaks, as I was feeling dizzy. Except for a few imperfections, it looks brand new, fresh and clean. I scrubbed and scrubbed but couldn't get the old grey stains out. It was looking so nasty, I didn't even want to take a shower. I stripped the caulking and will be doing that as well. Thank you for showing me that I can do it! I am so excited to add some plants and candles and take a bubble bath!
It looks fabulous 😊
Wow!! I just signed a new apartment lease and the bathtub needs some work but I knew that I could love up on it
Awesome thank you! I'm so glad this is helpful, congrats on the new apartment!
I want to do the same. I’m just worried that I won’t get my deposit back.
This is incredible! I literally just discovered your channel, and am binge watching all your stuff! I'm older ( late 50s), but love to tackle DIY projects! You make them look easy, and do an amazing job! Thank you for sharing your creativity and talent! I can't wait to paint my bathtub! 😊😊
I'm sorry I'm just now responding, thank you so much for your kind comment! I love hearing from other women DIYers, there's nothing we can't tackle and it doesn't matter how old or young we are. Keep at it!
@@TheNiftyNester Thanks for responding. Another important thing I had was how long over the years the glaze is supposed to last with this brand?
Omg sameeeeee
Her voice is soothing and the way she explains is so catching
I just caught myself watching her pool videos
And I don’t have a pool lol
Good grief after the fan motor, the plastic zipper, the face breathing mask, the scrubbing and cleaning etc. You should have just bought and installed a new surround from a supply depot store! Same price tag!
Thanks for the great video! You crushed it! Used your Amazon links to prep for my project 😊
Thank you so much! Good luck with yours, I'd love to hear how it turns out!
Awesome! I can't wait to try this.
Thanks so much for this awesome video :) It turned out amazing!
Thank you!!!
You are very good at this. Thank you.
What a great job. Topside is made for painting fiberglass boats so it makes perfect sense to use on a fiberglass tub enclosure. If you have a true tile surround and cast iron tub I'd be inclined to say use the tub n tile refinishing kit.
I am so glad I watched your video!!! I need to refinish my tub but was a bit intimidated with the 2 part stuff. Thank you so very much!
Thank you so much! Yeah I would 100% use this stuff again, it's so easy to work with. Good luck with yours!
@@TheNiftyNester what kind of paint did you use on this project?
It's called Rustoleum Topside Marine Paint. There's a link in the description box of this video as well if that helps.
You are such an inspiring person. 🎉 Thank you for sharing 🙏
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Good job I am loving it ❤
Very easy to understand explanation. Thank you for that!
You're welcome, thank you so much! ❤️
wow! great tutorial. thanks a million!
Thank you so much for this video. You gave me the confidence to finally do a bathroom remodel and I am so glad that I found this alternative to buying or building a new shower. I only have 1 coat finished and it looks brand new. You’re awesome! You make things simple and easy to follow!
How's it holding up? Would you recommend it?
Girl you did that! OMG!
This video is amazing! We just bought a house with a guest bath that is so similar, but our tub surround is even uglier. (Yellow, but maybe supposed to have been beige?) I’m curious how you handled the caulking around the surround. Did you remove it beforehand, and caulk before painting? Or did you go back and caulk after painting? TIA. Hoping to start prep for this next weekend. We repainted the bathroom Swiss Coffee and now it’s made the surround color extra offensive!
Excellent job!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
This was really good and easy to follow, thanks!
You're welcome, thank you so much!
Wow, I am impressed
I’ve never seen a better DIY video done by a woman (or man!)!!
You seriously need to be discovered and have your own DIY tv series!
The idea to sand between coats is a great one.
I’m about to refinish showers and bathtubs in a mobile home.
Thanks for all your great tips.
Thank you so much!!! ❤️ You are too kind 😊 Good luck with yours, I hope it goes well and you love it!
it may be a good tutorial but the pitch of her voice is quite vexing.
could be my cheap amazon sound bar though.
@@TheNiftyNester Hi nice video have you had to touch up on this tub does it look patchy after showering and can you scrub shower when needs cleaning and not worry
Exactly my thoughts! More people need to know about your channel!
Thank you so much for the video. That paint is cheaper and looks really fine!
You're welcome, thank you!
Nice job! Congrats!
Awesome work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻!!
Thus is the best video ive seen yet.. thank u
This is absolutely fantastic content - Wow! I was going to buy a new corner sink but I've decided to paint it and save some money. I'll just get new taps as the Sales are on. Again, wonderful content, so well presented! Thank you Nifty Nester. Blessings always.Psyche aka Psyche Thompson UK 🌹
I used marine boat paint to paint the tiles in my tub/ shower (left the bath tub did not paint it). It looked great when it was done. After about one year it still looked pretty good. After about 2 years it started to show defects- small scratches and some minor peeling (mostly were the bar of soap was constantly hitting the wall). However now after 3 years it has started to really yellow. It still looks "white" (not horrible yellow like you would see in a smoker's home or bad yellowing you see in bright sunlight). It would still look kind of white if it was by itself however because it is directly next to the original high gloss bath tub, toilet, cabinets, shower bar etc that are all manufacture painted (I believe power coated or porcelain) gloss white the yellowing of the marine paint becomes very noticeable. There is a big difference between the painted tiles and gloss white tub. Directly after painting the tiles the paint will look just like this video. Gloss white tiles blending nicely with the gloss bath tub. However be prepared to repaint every few years because it will definitely yellow over time. I am just happy I only painted my tiles that can be easier replace or covered with a liner if I dont' want to keep repainting vs painting my entire bathtub that would cost thousands of dollars to replace.
Overall experience it looks great directly after painting. However it will yellow so be prepared to repaint every few years (in my experience three years).
Thanks for your experience! Not I'm thinking to add some tint so yellow won't be a problem. Green or whatever tub is better than scratched one anyways. You saved me a lot of time in three years period
Wow! That looks great! Thank you!
You're welcome, thank you so much!
Wow. I’m impressed.
Thank you!
Wow! Excellent! I would love to learn this. I wish there were programs/training for home repairs and or renovations.

@@TheNiftyNester Great job! How long did the odor linger?
I finished my bathtub project and I like how it turned out. Thank you for the video it was a great tutorial. I asked about fixing runs and ended up lightly sanding any flaws and doing a total 3rd coat and I"m glad I did. After it dried for 3 days I took 0000 steel wool and went over the paint job which smoothed out small ridges from the paint roller and it looks great.
I'm glad to hear it turned out well, thank you for the update!
How is the paint job holding up so far?
I’m renovating a 66 year old house. The bathroom is okay but the bath tile is puke green. I’ve avoided replacing them for a year now. I’m so happy I found this. I actually have a can of that paint from a previous project. Next month I’ll give this a shot! Thanks for the lesson! Also that zipper is going to be a game changer!
Thank you! It's always nice to have product on hand already for a project. I hope your tiles turn out well! You'll love the zipper, it's definitely one of those things you don't realize you need in your life until you have it lol.
i've never puked green. its always clear with whatever i ate within the last 12 hours.
if you have green than that's bile from the liver or gallbladder. and you likely should see a doctor.
What about a regular tub and not for a fiberglass surround?
Great video !!
I have a white tub that I need to repaint to Ocean Blue . 😆
When using the repainted tub later did you notice you the surface too slippery ? I'm trying to decide if I need to use a type of non slip coating on the floor of the tub.
Excellent job on the fan duct box !!!👍
Looks like a super job . Really appreciate the attention to the different details.
Very informative and I LOVED that you were very descriptive!!! Question: any update???
Thank you so much!!! I'm still working on the bathroom reno (it's taking forever since I've had to stop to work on a few other things) but I'll do an update video when I'm done and the tub has had more use. But so far it has held up well and looks like it did the day I finished it. I'll definitely film an update in the future though!
Thank you!! Lord bless you!! I've been trying to fix what that stupid tub kit did to my tub!!! This paint is so much better!!!!
U r an inspiration and I'm about to start sanding!
Thank you so much ❤️ That's exciting! Good luck, and I'd love to hear how it turns out!
@@TheNiftyNester will try send b4/after.
I did it! It came out great. Only deviation from ur video is that I have a sliding glass door in the bedroom that the bath is in so I didn't have any trouble with fumes. Took me four days but I'm old. I wud luv to show u the after but don't know how send.
Looks awesome!
Thank you so much! ❤️
New follower!! Love love!!
This was a VERY GOOD video.
Thank you for making this video I currently moved in to an old apartment and the current renters painted the tub but it’s peeling off and my landlords don’t plan to clean it up. I hate taking showers it looks so gross. I can’t wait to start this project so I can enjoy my showers and baths again. 🤗
Thank you and you're welcome! If you've already given it a try I hope it turned out well, if not then good luck!
Thank you for your great video. It gave me the confidence to do my green 40yr old Kohler fiberglass shower tub. It was in perfect shape but wrong color. My wife loves the new glossy white look of the Rustoleum top coat now. There are a few things I learned. Sand with 220 at start and between all coats. We could see some scratching in finished product from the 150 grit I used initially. It took 4 coats to completely hide the green and the sanding marks. The $30 quart can ran out after the 3rd coat. Don't use the cheap $1 foam roller kit from the dollar store. The tray worked great but the foam expanded and kept falling off the roller. I then purchased a high quality foam roller and it worked great for the following 3 coats. I was able to reuse the same roller by keeping it in a baggie over night. Use a foam brush to do the detail work. The horse hair brush I used didn't work well at all. I was hoping for a better looking result when all finished. The self leveling properties of the paint didn't smooth out the over lapping from the roller. Not real noticeable unless the light reflects off the surface at an angle which happens with a window or light fixture. It took me 2hrs to remove the old glass sliding shower door. Took lots of elbow grease and goof off to remove adhesive and silicone caulking. It took another 8 hrs to finish sanding and painting. It is still quite smelly in the bathroom after a week. Smells like vinegar. If I had to do it over I would use appliance white spray paint (not the epoxy) for the areas above the water line in the tub. I used this on a fridge and it looked very professional. This would have been a lot cheaper, faster, less smelly and better looking. Not sure how it would hold up to every day shower use but it would be easy to respray if needed. If anybody does this let me know how it turned out. Hope this helps someone.
Did you sand again after the 4th coat?
@@kyliewilson5800 nope. I'm tempted too. I would just do the side wall since it is most noticable there. However, we rarely use that shower and the smell took a month to resolve. I can still detect the smell 6 months later. The finish is holding up well. There have been about a dozen showers taken so far. I will wait until summer before redoing.
Wow great job you just taught me on this. thank you!!
You're welcome, thank you!
Such a detailed video! The best on tub painting I’ve seen. I’m curious how this is holding up after some time
Thank you!!! It's held up really well. I haven't had any issues with chipping, peeling, or anything like that. This bathtub gets a lot of use daily, and it still looks amazing. I wanted to have the update video posted months ago but had some things come up and haven't been able to get it done. I am hoping to finish that video soon, though.
Thank you! This is very helpful :)
You're welcome, thank you!!!
Your very smart and talented! I as well love doing DIY around my home. I’m gonna start on my bathroom. How well is tub paint holding up?
amazing job. You are a great teacher ! will this work on tiles too?
Thank you so much! ❤ Yes it will, the process is exactly the same.
You are BEAUTIFUL And BRILLIANT!!!! Thank you so much!☆♡☆
I removed the drain, faucet and overflow though. Not hard to do at all
Could you include a shopping list of all items needed for this awesome re-do? 😊 also, will this product work on a ceramic tub?
Awesome job! I keep coming back and rewatching this. I'm just debating whether I should paint mine as part of a mini-reno. It's ok but a bit dingy. I'm hesitant because of concern that the paint won't age well and will end up looking worse than it looks now. Yours looks so amazing. How did it hold up I see this video is from a while ago. Does your painted tub still look great. And what do you use to clean it now that it's painted. Thank you so much for your videos!
I just completed this on my walk in shower base. It turned out amazing! So thankful for this video, but I too am wondering what she used to clean it w/o damaging or scuffing up the paint.
Thank you both so much! As far as how it's looking now, it's been a little over a year and it's held up really well. The finish is like a hard enamel surface once the paint cures which makes it really durable. As far as cleaning it goes, I just avoid using abrasive cleaners like comet and scrub brushes. I can usually get it clean with vinegar water and a sponge but sometimes, if it's a little dirtier, I'll use a spray tub cleaner and sponge. I hope that helps!
New sub. Thank you . Just what I needed just now 👍
You did great!
Thank you!
You are AMAZING!
