I want to do this....not because I like the idea....but because I am lazy and seems easier than replacing the whole surround just for the kids to destroy it (because that seems to be children's purpose in life....wear out snd destroy the things you have worked for). one thing id like to mention with the paint is that since it is oil based you can easily thin this using mineral spirits or an actual paint thinner, start ina small pint container and add a few drops of your thinner. mix until you have almost a silk like consistency and apply. Not only will it leave a nicer finish (imo), this makes the paint much easier to roll, stretches your product further so you get more out of a can (coverage) and does a better job hiding streaks when applied with a brush.

@@sonmydful I’m not disagreeing with you, but I read on another post pertaining specifically to this product that upon thinning it out with a bit of paint thinner, they experienced dry times triple that of when the product was applied as is.
Is your suggestion to thin based off personal use of THIS specific product, or similar products in general? Are you aware of why this may be, or have you experienced increased dry times upon (lightly) thinning out oil based paints?

I'm going with this because I did the same with the polyurethane on my hardwood floors before--I used marine grade polyurethane and nothing is better than that on your hardwood floors. Thanks. You two think outside the box, research, and navigate your own course. Your fiberglass tub would have had a topcoat of something, possibly an epoxy. That would be the determining factor for what would adhere to it. You reasoned your way to marine paint.
I am puzzling my way to painting a cast iron tub a as have reasoned similar to you about marine paints. Ships are made of metal, so a marine paint for that would yield similar results with consideration to the original paint on the tub. Smoothness and no streaks are my concern. Adhesion, with uniform sanding and increasing smoothness of sandpaper seems the way to go. And, of course, cleaning and primer specific to the paint; that’s what helped the binding between the old and new paint.
A ROS would have simplified your work (hand sanding’s tough), but you did it! Great.
    Thanks! I’m a convert.
**I’ve seen the results of big box store “tub” paints. Not Good!

Thank you for your great video. It gave me the confidence to do my green 40yr old Kohler fiberglass shower tub. It was in perfect shape but wrong color. My wife loves the new glossly white look of the Rustoleum top coat now. There are a few things I learned. Sand with 220 at start and between all coats. We could see some scratching in finished product from the 150 grit I used initially. It took 4 coats to completely hide the green and the sanding marks. The $30 quart can ran out after the 3rd coat. Don't use the cheap $1 foam roller kit from the dollar store. The tray worked great but the foam expanded and kept falling off the roller. I then purchased a high quality foam roller and it worked great for the following 3 coats. I was able to reuse the same roller by keeping it in a baggie over night. Use a foam brush to do the detail work. The horse hair brush I used didn't work well at all. I was hoping for a better looking result when all finished. The self leveling properties of the paint didn't smooth out the over lapping from the roller. Not real noticable unless the light reflects off the surface at an angle which happens with a window or light fixture. It took me 2hrs to remove the old glass sliding shower door. Took lots of elbow greese and goof off to remove adhesive and silicone caulking. It took another 8 hrs to finish sanding and painting. It is still quite smelly in the bathroom after a week. Smells like vineger. If I had to do it over I would use appliance white spray paint (not the epoxy) for the areas above the water line in the tub. I used this on a fridge and it looked very professional. This would have been a lot cheaper, faster, less smelly and better looking. Not sure how it would hold up to every day shower use but it would be easy to respray if needed. If anybody does this let me know how it turned out. Hope this helps someone.

Looks good going to try the same. If those were oil based paints it’s good to thin as you use. Otherwise it thickens and takes forever to dry. I made many mistakes lol

They want to get in and get out. The paint takes several days to cure the way we do it. There is never any chipping, but there may be fading over time (approximately a year or 2).

I love the idea of this paint, but I don’t have a fan in my basement bathroom and I have a dog. I was totally going to do this, but my dog is so sensitive to smells, I’ve decided I will hire a company to redo my shower. I don’t actually use the shower and the company said it will not yellow over time. I need this to last the life of the house because I never want to replace the shower. Thank you so much for the update.

@@DIYPowerCouple So I did it!!! My sister & I painted the shower & tub tonight. We used 'Rust-Oleum Tub And Tile Refinishing 2-Part Kit'. I thought I had a 'fiberglass' shower but it was actually 'acrylic'. Which was good because I couldn't find any 'marine paint' in my 'landlocked' state!!! The best tip I got was to not just use the paint immediately after mixing because it's super runny. I saw a video which said to 'mix, wait 10 mins, stir for 2 mins, wait 10 more mins, stir for 2 mins' then start painting. That waiting period really made it go on more like regular paint. The only bad part with using this product is the 'fumes' - they are HORRIBLE!!! We wore mask, had fans setup but still had to go outside for fresh air. We put on 2 coats today & will come back once the place airs out to put another coat.
Thanks for your video. It was super helpful & have me the courage to even attempt this!!!
Your prep-work on cleaning & sanding was REALLY helpful. I forgot to tape the walls before starting but I can paint over those mistakes 😜.

Thank you! I am renting a home and the shower is so gross. It’s been painted previously and the paint chips off more and more each time I clean it. It also has spots that are rough in texture, like there’s sandpaper in the paint, which makes it extremely difficult to clean. I know as a renter I shouldn’t do stuff like this but I am seriously considering it seeing as i am going to be here another year at least. Thank you so much!

This project looks great. I do have some concerns though about toxicity. Both when doing the project (sanding fiberglass), fumes and such, but also, concerns that the marine paint might be toxic while taking a bath? Great video though, thank you for posting. Lovely couple.

This primer and paint are the real deal. The primer is very strong, but the smell will subside. Always wear safety gear when working with fiberglass. The marine paint is "toxic" prior to application, but after it cures, it is fantastic. We haven't had any "toxic" problems while taking baths or using the shower. Since posting this video, many people have done it...and have had great results. Hope this helps! -DIYPC

I have used the marine white and black paint on wooden vanities and medicine cabinets. I would love to get more Knowledge what about the marine boat bottom paint. Hi guys, thanks for the video. I love your guys’ videos and I have learned so much from you (specifically how to lay peel and stick tiles in my bathroom and it looks amazing!). I refinished my tub about two years ago with a Rustoleum tub and tile refinishing kit and I have just a few little patches where the paint is peeling. I’m wondering if you know how I can repair it and what I can do to make sure that it doesn’t peel again when I paint over it? I’ve been trying to lay down some Welbond glue to create a silicone barrier, but it doesn’t seem to be doing that much so I’m wondering if you have any additional tips - thanks so much!

I thank God for you both… really and truly I am so encouraged…I needed to see your video… so very thankful I came across this one. Your tub looks fantastic even after over two years…I bought a tub and tile kit from Home Depot …I have sanded my tub once and getting ready to sand again… sat down to rest and started watching CZcams videos for hints and tips on how to apply my product and found terrible year later videos 😞… so I started researching painting fiberglass and the Marine Paint came up… I have watched a few videos of boats being painted… but so wondered if it would truly work on tubs… all this very intensive prep work you don’t want it chipping just one year later… then I found you both tonight and I feel God has imparted confidence to me through you both and that I am on the right track… one question… have you “refreshed” it with painting another coat to brighten it? I ask because I watched a video of a wonderful young woman who had painted her tub with the product I bought but am hoping to return and buy marine … and the chemical reaction of the new wet paint she bought which was the same product she painted her tub with caused the paint on her tub to horribly bubble and blister… poor woman ended up with a horrid mess… so I knew I was never going to be able to “touch” up …. I was wondering even though it is marine paint… can it be painted over with the same product and not produce a reaction… did you try yet? I really loved your presentation….sooooooo well presented and thought out!, THANK YOU!! 5 star rating!! Lord multiply their blessings!!

I had a tub in rental prop had cracks in a corner and someone tried to repair it and paint it. It looked terrible and I think it probably leaked. I used some kind of fiberglass repair where you mix two products together. I then filled the cracks with it and sanded it smooth. Then I used marine paint on it. It worked great. I had to point it out to people where I “patched” it.
I had estimates from $495 + to fix it. Oh I used topside paint as well.
