Very nice looking revolver! I have both the 6 and 8 3/8 inch Model 29-2 in their presentation boxes with all of the original paperwork! I have wanted the Dirty Harry revolver for over 35 years and finally got the chance to own one about 5 years ago! You are correct! I did have to pay up though. I think it was worth it. The same dealer had both of them. He was very happy to see me come into the shop! New Sub!

Also Terry, in addition to what you said about firing pins on hammers, a lot of people don't like a revolver that isn't "pinned and recessed" yet the Colt Python has never been P & R'd. Kind of funny.

I have 5 N frame S&Ws in my collection. Three model 29s with barrels of 6.5”, 8.375” and 10”. I also have a factory nikeled 8.375” model 57 and a 6.5 in model 25 in 45ACP. I don’t feel like digging them out right now but I believe that with the possible exception of the 10” Silhouette they are all Pinned and Recessed. The reasons for pinning and recessing no longer apply. When the original N frame 44 Special revolvers came out in the very early 1900s the cartridge cases were not as strong and were prone to blowing out at the rim if loaded with heavy loads of the new smokeless powder. Modern brass cartridge cases are much stronger and if you load them hot enough to blow out. Then you probably deserve to lose a finger or two. My model 25 has the best double action trigger I have ever pulled and that includes a Colt Python I once had that had been tuned and had what I thought was the best trigger until I tried the model 25s trigger in my local Freedom store. Once I tried that trigger I knew that pistol was coming home with me. I love these old revolvers (I have a couple of Colt DA revolvers that pre-date WWI and WWII) but the simple truth is it is true they don’t make them like that anymore. If they did they would probably cost three or four times what they do today. The revolvers made today have better metallurgy than the older guns and they take advantage of modern manufacturing techniques so they can be sold at a price point that people can afford. Yes I love the older guns and I have been collecting and shooting them for almost 60 years now, but I enjoy and shoot the modern guns as well. I gave each of my three granddaughters a modern S&W revolver. The two oldest each got a 3” model 10 and the youngest got a Pro Series 3” model 60. Maybe you young whipper snappers can forgive us old farts for longing for the good old days. While you enjoy the benefits of living in this current golden age of modern revolvers.

Ypu are so correct in everything you say. Modern machine has caught up with the hand work that went into guns like the registered magnum and colt pythons. They do not make them like they use to but they are still very good guns. Thanks for your comment and for watching

Nice revolver Terry. I have the 50th anniversary model 29 with gold inlay set in a walnut case. It is the same size used in the Dirty Harry videos. I’ve had it for many years and have never fired it. Most likely I will purchase another one, just a plain one and I will shoot that one. Never meant it to be a safe queen. When I purchased it was still flying all over the country for IBM and just never got back to it.

Originally looking at getting one of those however they have been a bit scarce for me so I compromise, I instead picked up a Ruger Super BlackHawk in .44 magnum 7 1/2” (my first .44 magnum) (manufactured in 1978) I plan on using it for Handgun hunting
I have another Ruger currently on layaway it’s a 50th anniversary Ruger BlackHawk in .44 magnum (standard BlackHawk not the super)

The Blackhawk is a good gun. They actually came out almost immediately after the Smith 29 back in the 1950s

Change the grips! You can shoot all day with a good set of rubber grips. Makes it feel like a .357 mag

The S&W 29 was truly a classic handgun. I used to own a pinned and recessed S-series 6.5" Dirty Harry gun. 🤣😎 With .44 Special SWC target loads, it was one of the most accurate handguns I've ever owned. Beautifully fit and finished. Of all the pistols I've owned, it is the one I most regret letting go. While I intellectually know this new model is fine, I really think if S&W was going to bring it back in their "Classic" line, they should have rebuilt the classic pistol. If they did, even at a price I understand would be higher, I would own one. But this is not a CLASSIC Model 29. And I truly hate the Hillary hole. 😒😂
I agree that, of the modern iterations, while both are okay, the Colt is a better choice.

I have to agree with all that. Some years ago, I lucked into a 29-2 6.5, in the box with tools. I'd walked into a small shop just as they opened, and the guy had just put it in the case on consignment. Needless to say, I jumped on it. It's a work of art, is all I can say. It's a 78, so it's not an S prefix. I feel very fortunate to own one, and I didn't have to pay what they want for a clean older one now.

Might as well buy a Taurus. Same Gun, different prices. I just can't see spending the money for MIM parts and a Sleeved barrel.

Lost me at the sleeved barrel and MIM parts. It's just a cheap way of making it. But you're paying for a Mercedes and getting a Kia. Rip off all around. Might as well buy a Taurus and get Smith and Wesson engraved on it.
