Why I still play The Sims 2 (and not The Sims 4)

  • An entirely personal, subjective and oddly specific series of rants about why I prefer The Sims 2 over the The Sims 3 and The Sims 4. DISCLAIMER: This is not valid nor constructive criticism towards any of these games, these are purely just feelings. I thought it could be interesting to some, maybe someone out there can relate? Nobody? Okay... I'll see myself out.
I do realise there were a couple of things I find to be key features of The Sims 2 but forgot to mention or just didn't explain that well. For example, chemistry, personalities, hobbies, etc. But if I wanted to talk about every single thing I love about this game, this would be a three day long video. I wanted to keep it short and focus on the exact things that make it hard for me to really enjoy the other games. So sorry, maybe next time!
    Chapters:
    0:00 intro & disclaimer
1:36 graphics, art style, animations, functionality, simplicity, small sensory things etc
    9:30 rotational gameplay & control
11:43 systems: wants, time, aging, memories etc
17:24 overwhelming amount of new content
18:32 replayability?? meaningful content over random stuff
20:53 one last attempt at explaining myself and apologising

I fully agree with you! The Sims 2 is the most complete in my opinion, an even if it came out in 2004 it still feels really modern. There may be people who think the graphics and outfits are outdated, and there's penty of custom content available, but the game doesn't depend on it because the gameplay is deep and "alive" on its own. The Sims 2 always feels like good a sitcom to me, where it is impossible not to feel attached to the characters and the worlds you create and share (ugh, Sims 2 exchange and machinima nostalgia!). Sims 2 just feels so detailed and thought out in every regard, ESPECIALLY the animations. To think that we went from Sims 1 to THAT, we had no idea how good we had it back then!

  • @Artem1s
    @Artem1s Před 3 lety +124

Sims 4 tries too hard to cater to younger audiences because that's where the money is. Remember how steamy the animations were in previous iterations? Remember the cake dancers from Sims 1? There is just no real challenge given to you in the Sims 4, everyone has to create his own challenges to make it interesting, some people find enjoyment in this but I'd love to be thrown into a living breathing world like in the Sims 2. Every neighborhood has had its own stories, family quarrels, mystery and so much more to uncover. Here's to hoping that the Sims 5 will do better (if it ever comes out) 🤞

I love that you said this cause I actually like both aspects really. I don’t want townies or other household to progress when I’m not watching/playing them but I do like the “randomization” of life goals and job searches and stuff. I feel like in the sims 4 you get to decide everything all the time and life just doesn’t work that way and frankly it’s exhausting. A couple of surprises that just “happen” are always nice. Like I kinda love when I decide that my sim is gonna be a small appartment girlie but than she marries someone who turns out wants to have 6 children or something. It gives these really nice twists to your game play which keeps it interesting.

& something I feel like I should add on is that the team for The Sims 3 had to cut out a lot of small details because of how heavy the game already was. I.E, opening drawers to get cooking utensils. This is nothing in comparison with how many details, small or huge they cut out in The Sims 4 though. The Sims 4 has so many amazing ideas but such a lazy-cut corner team. I wish they’d stop releasing packs and work on the core game.

Sims 3 will always be my number 1 game. Mostly due to childhood nostalgia, but also somewhat because I feel, of all the games, it’s the one I can play with no mods, no custom content, no expansion packs, just base game, and still have fun! I personally really like the style of the sims (unpopular opinion I know)! Honestly, I can play the sims 3 for the entire day and not get tired of it.
I used to only have base game and late night as a child and yet I still racked up hundreds of hours on it just with those alone.
I do love the sims 2 too, but being a 2003 born kid, sims 3 was the big game growing up, not two. But I can still appreciate the game for what it is! The lore is incredible comparative to any other game. I’m also a sucker for realism. Give me a game where I have to buy my clothes to use them, and where I have to do my kid’s laundry and I’m sold. So the fact you don’t start with a mobile, the fact you don’t own every item of clothing ever, just tiny details like that, really set that game for me. However, as someone who hates controlling sims and prefers to be more like a watchful God, I find the whole ‘time not progressing on other lots’ deal really aggravating. I don’t play rotationally so it bites when my sim has gone from baby to death and Don Lothario is still bopping about as a young adult, you know? That said, I can still easily get hours of fun out of it, despite my dislike of certain aspects.
Sims 4 is ridiculously boring to me. I have a bunch of the packs, and I’ve still not touched it for months because it’s just not fun. I can get maximum an hour of entertainment, before I get tired (seriously, everytime I’ve played, I’ve unironically fallen asleep at my computer). It’s just so unentertaining because it’s so catered to children and I’m no longer in that demographic. I remember finding the raunchy sims 2 cutscenes so funny and charming. I remember laughing at the dancers in the sims 3 bachelor and bachelorette parties. The sims 4 gives me nothing to find entertaining. It’s just en empty husk to me.
Another key part is the sims. Sims 2 and Sims 3 sims had so much personality. The Sims 3 traits makes every sim seem like a different person. The Sims 2 didn’t have as many, but the hobby system, the chemistry system etc seriously made the game so enjoyable and made everyone feel like separate entities. The sims 4 sims however feel like empty shells. Like sure, I can make my sim neat, I can make them creative, but it just feels so pointless. It does nothing to impact them and they still just feel like heaps of nothing to me.
The ONLY thing I enjoy in sims 4 is CAS, and that’s only because I like making hyper realistic sims, and custom content lets me do that. The whole process is very streamline, I’ll give it that.
The sims 4 also just runs awfully. I play the sims 3 with max settings on everything except reflections. Sure, it crashes once every 4 hours or so, but I have an auto save and the game loads up pretty quickly for me. The sims 2 is why? 17 years old almost? Runs like a dream on my little laptop. The sims 4 on the other hand.. I play it with the LOWEST graphics, with laptop mode on, with the simulation lag fix mod on and I still struggle to get my sims to walk from one side of the room to the other!

After playing it for the first time in who knows how long, 10-15 years, I felt so GOOD! And it's the little things that make it the best imo. Like the fact that if you put your couple Sims to sleep in the same bed, they'll CUDDLE! Little things like that are missing from the Sims 4, and it's those things along with the lack of deep gameplay, that makes it feel hollow. So what if the graphics aren't as good? The Sims 2 is still an amazing game and definitely holds up ♡

  • @hkazu63
    @hkazu63 Před 3 lety +21

I’m glad to see more people appreciate the Sims 2 graphics. I think it found a great balance between realism and unrealism, where the Sims look human enough but never uncanny valley, and your options for making something really crazy are also so good. I also prefer being able to play without Sims just doing their own thing while you continue someone else’s storyline. It just aids your storytelling to be able to micromanage that bit of life. Rotational gameplay gives so many options with how to explore a storyline. It’s so much fun to play a serial cheat in The Sims 2, but when they have full autonomy like in other games, it’s too easy for them to get caught. And I much prefer the reputation meter to the fame system in the other games, bc it just feels more real and more interesting.

It’s very strange because Sims 1 is much more robotic than 3 and 4 due to how old it is, yet it feels more genuine and alive. The sims 2 completely blows sims 1 out of the water in terms of sims personality’s and quirks.
The main problem I find with 3 and 4 is that sims are always happy and laughing and in the sims 4, even with the sad emotion, sims feel like cartoon characters and not like real people. When a sim dies in 2, you see genuine grief in your sim when they cry for the next day or 2.

Already covered TS1, TS2 all the things you've just said, TS3 create a style and so much to do and sims AI, TS4 ease of use and convenience and search bar in build buy and gallery access. Of all 4 games, I cannot deny that TS2 is the best in the franchise - it just is. It gets more things just right than any of the other 3 do. I love the ts2 and ts3 I don't know how I've played Sims 4 for 3 years I've really grown to dislike the game, I got really bored with the game consistently and I thought it was just because I was tired of playing it but no, I constantly been playing the ts2 and ts3 for months and I have not once have gotten bored yet, personally I like ts3 a lot better because of the amount of things kids can do and the events that can happen with them and I love the opportunities, but I love the cute details in the Sims 2 the game is so detailed, also Sims 4 is basically unplayable for me the Sims 2 and 3 run way smoother for me and one is open world and the other has old programming, I can't with how many times my game lag I can't even move my camera without getting a ton of lag, it's terrible, but the cc and mods are amazing for that game the cc and mods are the only things that got me to play for so long I could never play without them, I feel ripped off that I spent so much money on that game though.

The animations bit is SO on point. The animations in sims 3 and 4 have always bothered me, seeing sims teleport into cars, elevators etc always break my immersion, on the other hand sims 2 animations are so fluid and detailed. I remember playing sims 3 a while ago and being bothered by the talking while dining animations, cause like, at some point sims would go from talking with their hands straight into eating without any animation between the two actions, like they would just go from a stance into another with no fluidity at all! Sims 2 have really spoiled me, and even though my preferred playstyle is not rotational, I'd still rather stick with sims 2 (specially with the story progression mod on the works).

Loved your opinion! I playing with sims almost 21 years, I don't even know how I enjoyed it so much when I was like only 4-5 years, but something then just made The Sims so much captivating for me, if even I don't knew what I did and almost everytime my sister helped me to control the things before I learned myself. And The Sims 2 is also give me the same feeling, I loved it if even I don't play the same as I did before, but obviously people and style is changing. When The Sims 3 is come out, I felt the same, but I also felt as you said, it was sometimes too much. My sims just never leaved the house just because I can't control them the same time and can't be with them everywhere. I still love the game, but it is too much content for me. And there is the sims 4 which have amazing CAS and I still think they doing amazing with it, but the gameplay not so much interesting, it lacks really much of thigs, the emotions mostly annoying then make the game better, the whims are horrible and everyone has the same whims what makes think all the sims thinking the same and this is not even realistic that all. I was so sad and unhappy when I got a new pc and The Sims 2 wasn't running on it.. it was 2-3 years without the sims 2 and truly missed it, and never had the same fun with the others but finally several years ago my friend helped me with it and I can't stop playing with it again♥ sorry for the long story, but I just felt to share it cause you are not alone with this opinion ♥

I'm trying out The Sims 3 and I think it might be okay for picking out a handful of my favorite characters. My play style since the first Sims has been to populate my neighborhoods with what I think are interesting characters and build a story playing each family for a day to keep them all in sync. Sims 2, which I'm still playing, is ideal for that because my inactive sims are frozen until I come back to them. In the Sims 3 open world my Sims would age up to the next life stage by the time I got back to them.

@@antonpetrov1483 My computer runs like butter, Sims 2 graphics and sims are much uglier to me, it’s a pain to install custom content to make the game seem somewhat updated, there are loads of loading screen that make me spend most of my gaming time just at home and almost never explore the world, the only world I like is the one that comes in apartment living, the lore is restricted to characters and has no bearing in the world, unlike the sims 3. I’m not saying it’s a bad game; I like the OG characters. But it’s pretty idiotic to be bashing someone for preferring a game because you don’t like the walkstyle of Sims when there are loads of valid reasons for someone to prefer it.
The sims 3 have the best worlds, expansion packs, emotion system based on moodlets, best life time aspirations, personality that is actually customisable and not tied to a point system and a stupid zodiac sign and that is not random, it’s the most fun game to play in every life stage (where are after school activities or learning how to drive in the sims 2), the worlds are rich, beautiful and fun, there are endless things to do in an amazing open world. I had almost all DLC for Sims 2 as a kid and still preferred my Sims 3 game with just a couple of the expansion packs I owned. That’s how good it was to me. @@Carolina-rd3gh In my life I will not believe that Sims 3 is going well for someone, because with its optimization it lags even on modern devices. Unlike The Sims 2, which will run smoothly everywhere.
In the Sims 3, CC is much more difficult to install. In The Sims 2, you just throw it into the Downloads folder and it's already in the game.
In The Sims 2, you can create your own world right from the base, in The Sims 3 through a special application.
And the fact that it is closed or open is not the first thing, not everyone likes to drive Sims to community lots.
In The Sims 2, the default replacement sims are prettier and they look like real people. And unlike the piggies from The Sims 3, they don't look the same face.
Maybe there are no separate traits in The Sims 2, but in life mode they really behave in accordance with personal points. And there is also such a thing when you point them to something, they are either happy or disappointed. For example, a slob will look into the camera and be upset that he was forced to clean the toilet, or an extrovert will be glad that he was forced to hug someone. And Emotions? In TS3?Lol.
I'm not scolding you, The Sims 3 is not a bad game. It also has pluses.
The Sims 2 has excellent characters, lively, interesting plot. Olive Specter, Curious Brothers with them pregnancy by aliens, Caliente, etc. The Sims 3 does not have an interesting plot, developing relationships between Sims or spoiling them is difficult, and in S2 it is very easy.

@@antonpetrov1483 I run The Sims 3 smoothly with all packs on one old gaming laptop. The Sims 2 actually presents a lot of glitches and in Windows 10 computers half of the people need to look for fixes to make it even start. I never needed to create a world of my own in the Sims 3 because the ones that come with it are gorgeous and giant unlike the sims 2 ones and I can always download beautiful worlds the community has made. If I wanted to create a world from scratch I’d play City Skylines or Simcity and not the Sims.
I don’t like the look of the sims in any iteration. They have a very weird face in the sims 2, I prefer moulding rather than sliders of sims 2 and 3 but I hate sims 4 hair. Sims 3 sims never made me unhappy.
The Sims 3 actually has more lore, premade families and super interesting plot lines that articules between families of the city. Even dead sims revived have relationships with the sims that killed them and they were enemies with in real life; there are hidden skills and hidden traits. There are loads of world Easter eggs and info and sims have individualised traits, individual bios beyond beyond the family one and even buildings have a story.
Personality on sims 3 is the best ever and the sims 2 is my least favourite because of how randomised it is. I hate that the life time wish below the life time aspiration is randomised and that my family oriented sims has a criminal aspiration every time I created her and that is totally off character from what I imagined. Furthermore, the sims 3 has the best settings of any sims game to appease the biggest amount of play styles.
It’s my favourite game. It’s gutsy, ambitions, feature and content packed, vibrant and propels a gameplay of wonder and story telling. You’re entitled to like the sims 2 and I understand why you may prefer it but the sims 3 allows me more flexibility out of any iteration and it’s my favourite game. Your attitude of “I will not believe that the sims 3 is going well for someone” is ridiculous. There are loads of CZcamsrs who play the sims 3 after years. SO many people love it. - Sim intereactions are fluid and full of personality

This video, however, was really nice because you talked up the game you love more than you talked down the games you don't like as much and everything was so well said and it was nice to see your perspective!

I feel that in sims 2 and 3 my sims felt unique every time, and things happened to them. Even of I tried, and i did, to have the exact same sim and same life but it wouldnt work. And the sims 4 all of them feel the same, it doesnt matter what their traits are or their goals.

You're the reason why I love the sims 2 and I wanted to buy a new PC to download it 😩💜💜💜

I resonate with everything in this video! I started out playing The Sims 3 when I began playing on the computer. Then Sims 4 came out and it has just been very lackluster.
I got the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection a few years ago and I’ve been addicted ever since! The game just feels SO alive and complete! I love that the sims team even took the initiative to build interesting storylines for the Sims 2 as well.

If it wasn't for 3's open world I'd pick 2 as well. I'm a one family players so it's just so fun simply hovering and seeing Townies live their organic lives without me.

I recently downloaded the sims 2 ultimate collection and in having so much fun! I never played rotationally before, because I simply never though of it, but ever since I saw Pleasant Sims play that way, I knew I had to try it. It's so much more fun that way!

Marticore's video on rotational gameplay: czcams.com/video/OPvhj6PNnHI/video.html

The music in Sims 1 is the best in the whole series. But the CAW in Sims 3 did have loads of potentual.

    2:15 THIS THIS THIS.
I HATE the animation they have in sims 4. after a while of playing sims, you just learn where everything is and you just wanna do things quickly. but in the sims 4 no, I need to wait for all the actions to pop up with the little animation. every. single. time. and the way that no one seems to be bothered by it and there's nothing you can do about it 😣

I absolutely enjoy this video, everything you said is true. It somehow make me feel better knowing that i'm not the only person who has this thought. The way the sims 2 has cutscene, dynamic animations, music, even sounds, it feel so satisftying. Every tiny details they put to the game, make it even better.
Also, it makes me happy seeing people actually still playing the sims 2 and loving it like i do. I don't hate the sims 3 and 4, i think i just can't get used to them. Nothing can replace the sims 2.
And by the way, i'm one of them who subscribe this channel because the main content is the sims 2. I would love to see new videos from you
