The run away diesel was a constant risk when I worked in the oil patch. All trucks and equipment were required to have positive air shut-off systems incase of a gas leak. Crazy stuff.
I've seen the NTSB video where a runaway diesel engine set off a massive explosion, so that safety feature makes perfect sense to me.
@Kumquat_Lord I watched that too haha. CSB makes great videos
@@Kumquat_Lord Yeah, unfortunately in one I recall him flipping the positive air shutoff caused a backfire or something like that and ignited the vapors. He should've just run because there was nothing he could do.
Anything diesel should have that i think.
I love the chill mechanic who's just like "let it evaporate bro".
He's a dopey lookin prick hey lol :p
In case anyone was wondering that semi that lost its engine during the pull was probably pushing close to 130-140 psi on triple turbos. The pullers go hard
Yeah, he said 60 pounds and I was thinking, "Nah, that's over 100 pounds at LEAST."
You meant it was pushing 8,93 to 9,6 bar
Yeah, my 3rd gen dodge hits 60psi at Wot with a single fleece cheetah
And motor mounts didn't break, he split the block
Well at least he doesn’t have to take out the engine. Simple in-frame and it should be good as new……..not.

Runaway diesels usually are a matter of an internal oil leak, the diesel will start to burn the oil as fuel even after you cut the fuel injectors off.
Can be from explosive gasses in the air too. On the oil and gas sites here in Canada you have to have runaway prevention device on all Diesel engines on site. If there is a slight natural gas leak it can cause the engines to runaway. I have even seen a propane station leak cause a runaway on a truck.
@Backmarker Racing oh wow, down here in Texas we don't have to have any prevention devices. Oil plants, refineries, even natural gas power plants, this was the first I've heard of that. I wonder if the climate here has anything to do with different regulations?
its either a failure within sending oil into the cylinder or, more commonly, when it is overfilled with oil or from driving (short) distances when the engine oil gets diluted with diesel resulting in a higher than max oil level. it wil push oil past the piston rings into the cylinder and take off to max rpm (usually 5500-6500, diesel wont burn faster than that)
@@JayFredTheFreshest the worst refinery accident in texas happened due to a runaway diesel, texas city refinery explosion 2005
@@markzenhorst5259 turbo oil seal can also feed oil in
For those that don't know, the truck that launched it's engine out wasn't broken motor mounts. Pullers like that have strengthened everything in the engine to the point the block itself is now the weakest point. That truck blew the top half of the block, head and all, right out of the truck. You can see in a different picture of the truck after that the crank and pistons were in it and the cylinders were in the part that launched out.
Yep, in the divisions that dont allow billet blocks you will often see the blocks split in half all the way around at the freeze plugs.
thanks for explaining what happened to my childhood school bus that one time. She was an old girl that broke down a lot, we had to cross on a ferry to get to school and one day when the driver was warming her up, he stood outside to talk to a parent and the bus started just revving and it got pretty high pitched. Never saw that driver run before or since. now i know why
Someone Tell me if im wrong but the explanation of them saying its Diesel vapours that get sucked in is wrong. Whats its actually caused by is if you have a turbo that is worn out and starts sucking in the oil thats keeping it lubed up the engine Starts running on its own oil that the turbo is shoving in there hence why you cant Just Turn it of couse the engine isnt running on fuel anymore at that point its running on its own oil.
Hey, um.....I think your bus driver left you to die.

Little know fact here, in order to complete a true, 100% percent oil change, you can't just drain the oil and replace it. That leaves all the old oil on the interior parts.... to make sure all used oil is gone, it's common practice to leave the pan off and bang the rev limiter for at least 3 minutes to burn off the used oil. Pro shops dont want you to know this performance technique.
💀
No
Why not just put the engine in the microwave for 5 min, the old oil will boil away

Getting the water out of the engine at 15:00 was so cool to see the firing order or the engine.
Runaway diesels are no joke, i have a big diesel engine from the 60s for industrial equipment that does it sometimes and its one of the scariest things i have dealt with.
Great upload
Youre saying it like its a common ocurrence😳
At that point your only choice is to throw it in neutral and say goodbye to your engine.
@@ChefofWar33 I mean that guy knew his engine well. He choked it of air long before it ran too much. Quick thinking on his part.
if anyone is old enough to remember when ABC used to do the wide world of sports back in the day, you use to see some of the old top fuel dragsters blow the top end off their motors at times. was always spectacular to watch!
It's hilarious that whenever you see those flood videos, the water is shallow enough that maybe you could get through if you go slow, but people attack it so fast that it creates a massive wave over the front of the car that floods the engine.
The one shown here is a famous ford in England, they recently closed it from all the knob-heads doing this to their cars.
Yeah, those trucks normally have their air intake mounted fairly high, if they had just gone in slow they most likely would have been fine.
@@SimonJ57 And obviously those in the know when the ford is flooded and all fire up the old cameras.
Sandro is one of my favorite guests.

I'm so happy y'all made this video format into its own channel.
Me too
6:40 diesels runaway because they’re compression ignition and often run a high pressure mechanical fuel pump AND volume pump. The faster the engine turns, the faster the pressure pump turns. If the throttle plate sticks open (engines are pumps and are pulling a vacuum) mechanical pump is gonna pulled more fuel (and you can run on just a pressure pump I believe VW did it in the late 90s at least), timing is there. So you got stoicheometry and she goes. Slam a board over the intake to starve it for air or cut a fuel line underneath; flaring a fuel line and putting in a union is cheap versus a motor.
I think the more common cause for run away diesel is a busted oil seal in the turbo leaking into the intake side. There are industrial scenarios where diesel engines have to be outfitted with emergency shut off valves due to excessive flammable gasses in the air that may occur at a fuel refinery or gas processing plant. You can still find some older diesels in use that have manual shut off valves in case of a run away event.
So happy to be subscribed to such a small, humble channel.

I was a passenger in almost the same situation as the flood video, so i can say with experience that the driver was trying to get to his local "Game Crazy" to buy NHL 2012. We all told him it was a bad idea, but he was dangerously Canadian.
12:16 I've seen that on a friends car a few years ago. Difference was, that he didnt add water, but used his car on everyday basis for a ~1 mile trip to work, so the engine never got to temperature. Result: condensed water accumulated in the oil pan, finally froze during winter and the engines last words were "wroo...blubb".
Did it every day for 4 months in Naples FLA...totaled the car before the engine failed.
Most runaway deseils happen when you have an oil leak somewhere. Usually in the turbo and it uses the oil as fuel and will not stop
7:44 The most accurate thing said this video.
When I was in auto/diesel school, we had a diesel engine runaway during class on an engine stand. The instructor told everyone to back away, and jumped in with a clipboard to suffocate it. It worked, and it was scary to see and hear that thing going faster and faster by itself.
Was kinda cool to be there, since everything ended alright

14:49 WD-40 is barely a lubricant. It’s made for Water Displacement but it’s a much better thinner than it is a lubricant. It may help a heavier grease move better in a hinge or a bearing, but I would NEVER put it directly in the engine. Sandro was right just use oil, a tiny bit of trans fluid wouldn’t be bad.

the fact you got that ford crossing video in there is hilarious, i drive past this place most days for work. interesting backstory is this place got really popular for people smashing through it and for people videoing it so things kept getting more and more insane until eventually the police closed the road, i think its been closed for a good six months so far.

8:32 those 2-stroke Detroit Diesel engines are know for running away
13:27 Reminds me of a time after a hurricane. My mom and I were debating on getting groceries while in town. The store's parking lot could only be accessed by two long driveways, the grocery store being behind another business, both driveways flooded. We waited for a while, debating on attempting the drive. Then we saw a Pepsi/Coke truck (I forget which) start to drive out. When it hit that water, it made a pretty good impression of a snowplow. Needless to say, we said, "Nope!" That was just too much water!

I feel like this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship
I spent a few years on light tanks called M551 Sheridan's. Runaway engines were fairly common. The tank commander would have to jump out of the turret, open the rear engine deck, kick the intake hose off and stick a clipboard or book against the turbo inlet while you were driving across the desert to kill it. Always funny.
9:38 - Had this happen in my MX5. Likely the head was not getting enough oil and the camp welded itself to the head while the crank was still rotating and the timing belt ripped off the cam gear.
The guys car it is has a insta page and went over it on concept 3 i cant remember but it snapped the gear and damaged a couple other parts but he said he did everything right and had everything tourqed to specs
@@lonewitness9794 mine did it after a hard drive on track, I believe it overheated at one point and I didn't notice, then I didn't let the engine idle and cool off enough after the drive. Same I've checked all bolts for torque and was sure they were right.

7:02 they fail to mention most run-away diesel situations are usually caused by the turbo feeding the cylinders with atomized oil form a bad oil seal within the turbo and not typically a fuel leak.
You can prevent money shifting by beefing up your drivedrain mounts and shift bushings. A lot of times this happens because under load your shifter will be in a diferent place then when you lift off, so people miss the gate by accedent going from 4th to 5th,

There's a farmer in the UK who used to enter tractor pulling events with his tractor (obviously). He was curious to see what would happen if he mated a V8 and a straight 6, and it was epic.
I can only imagine that any tuning setup that would allow you to rev your engine to 9000rpms would also allow you to place a rev limiter anywhere you please. RIP little D.
The pulling truck that blew an engine was probably pushing over 2,000 hp. Insane power
Yeah I'd say that 60 psi was a low ball I got friends that street 60 on their street trucks probably overly 100 psi
@@Nahthataintmeimaboss This! Heck my BMW X5 diesel that's deleted and tuned runs 50psi.
@@Nahthataintmeimaboss I was thinking this as well. My severely detuned 579 pushes about 30psi, my previous detuned Cascadia was around 40psi at max. They're running like half power at those boost levels because of the detune. I also venture to say that it's more than 25 tons (on the first one at least) considering trailer + freight is regularly around 30 tons for an average, detuned semi tractor.
It's got so much torque that the whole frame was twisting! Insane
Engine wanted to be at the full pull line.
3:10 hard cut rev limiters sound great, but they are way harder on parts than soft cut. The rapid speed up and slow down causes unnecessary harmonics and vibrations that weaken the rotating assembly
