6:30 It's called diesel runaway and it happens when seals in turbo give up and it lets oil into intake. It starts running at very high rpm because diesel engines burn oil very well. You can't shut the car down and it will run until it runs out of oil and engine locks up. You have three options basically either stall it if you have an manual, cover the intake so no air gets into intake which is dangerous or wait until engine locks up.
Can I combine option 4. *RUN* with of the other/all options?
You can stall it out if it's manual but slamming it in park won't do shit. Runaway is scary shit.
I was thinking the same thing! I'm surprised they didn't know what a runaway diesel was.
@@perryrush6563 A better option, 4. Runaway from the soon to be flying bits of metal...

@@chuckholmes2075 Yea, they fed him scripted answers because he knows nothing. If he didn’t recognize it this time, that proves that he is incompetent and just reads his answers.
I owned a 1963 Oldsmobile Jetfire which was one of the first Turbo cars. It ran fine, but you had to make sure you kept up on Turbo Fluid Maintenance. It used a special fluid to keep the turbo lubricated. I had the car for 3 years and sold it to a man down the road and he used it for another 10 years.
I need more of Sandro and Ms. A! They are really good mechanics and entertaining to watch!!
"you're a real mechanic, right?"

Literally my favorite guy on this show.
I love how Sandro's explanations are simple and straightforward ( for dummies like myself ) and Angelina's are a bit more in depth but still simple enough to grasp ( she's definitely an instructor).

I like Sandro's explanations way more. They help you understand what physically happens without the official terms. His explanations motivate me to just take it apart and see what happens without worrying. I've always struggled with teachers overcomplicating things eventhough the terms they used were "correct". My photography teacher had this whole story about camera aperture. And at the end I said okay, so it's basically just a hole that opens and closes. And if you make the hole bigger, obviously more light comes in and you get a brighter photo. It's not rocket science please.
@@RacingPepe that is true
I like em both for different reasons. I love the additional technical info
I love these two! Sandro keeps it real. Angelina is more technical but still light.

I agree with Sandro's diagnosis "too much power couldn't handle it"....10/10 for the mexican vampire mechanic.
None of them know what their talking about . That engine was fine. It was reinforced and made much more power. Diesels arent gas engines . Totally different animals.
@@markrich3271 the exploded engines on fire with stuff sucked into the impeller wheels are fine? I wouldn't let you near my car.
@@markrich3271lol you obviously don’t know about the torque limitations of diesel engines. That’s why nitrous is used to make HP while limiting torque on diesel applications. And based off the flame it looks like that’s what they did to it. Too much juice for the setup so it exceeded the turbos limit.
@@markrich3271 The engine exploded. Seems like to much power somewhere
@@TheOhsemixthis really sounds like what happened. That would explain the immediate stoppage of coal rolling and what looked like video-game nitrous flames coming out those pipes. Crazy to me that some people don't understand that heavy-duty diesels shouldn't be spinning at twice the tach's max revs
Edit: also forgot to mention, rolling coal is pretty dumb. All it is is having a very rich fuel map tune flashed onto the ECU for the sake of cLoUt
You can tell Angelina is an automotive instructor, she's always does such a good job explaining what's going on and why it happens, and how to avoid that problem. Her students must come out as real experts if they pay attention.
Exactly. Sandro obviously knows a lot, but can't explain it to save his life. Angelina is able to explain things very clearly without hesitation.
@@andoletubefor sure, it’s nice hearing their different explanations though. Angelina breaks it down and Sandro keeps things simple
and she's hot as FK
She knows a lot, but her statement that turbos dont rob power to make power is completely false. They dont really borrow from gross power output like a supercharger, but the back pressure created by a turbo simply robs the power before it even makes it to the crank. Dont believe me, stick a turbo in the exhaust flow of an N/A engine and see how it reduces power output. And then on top of that, the boost created on the compressor side also slows the impeller and in turn creates even MORE back pressure.
Her explanation of what happened to that Corvette is absolutely wrong. More than likely what happened was something in the intake/turbo blew apart, and then the fire come from all the unburnt fuel because it was running so rich due to loss of boost this isn’t the only episode where she was incorrect
That turbine spinning around like that is a pretty incredible feat to accomplish. That was sick
James: "I'm gonna give you a preemptive 'get your minds out of the gutter!'"

For anyone wondering about the car in 6:24 the black volvo, that can happen with disels when there is to much oil in the intercooler and its just going to redline and feed itself, you have to choke it yourself from air so that it shut down.
That Volvo was just a runaway Diesel, not a turbo fail. Once that happens, that engine will rev itself apart unless there is someone who knows what they are doing. Loving the channel btw! Sandro and Angelina are the stars of these episodes! :D
Either choking the intake or cutting off the fuel flow will work, but there are caveats for both:
-Choking the intake may not work as if there's a loose fit or crack on any piping, it'll just suck in air through those gaps and continue to rev like mad. If you have direct access to the front of the compressor, then you can just put something solid like a block of wood in front of it and hold it down until it chokes.
-Cutting off the fuel supply may not work as if the turbo has an especially bad oil leak, then it will just siphon off of the engine's oil supply until it detonates from a lack of lubrication.
If the vehicle has a manual transmission, then you could instead try to stall the engine.
@@uberschnilthegreat22 even by cutting the fuel flow, most of the time run away diesels runs on the engine oil
@@retrocompaq5212 If you read all of my comment, you would have seen I mentioned that.
It’s funny nobody said about runaway diesel, because they don’t have diesel Volvos in the States! 😅

New Hi/Low idea: Sandro & Angelina on low car versus the Donut crew on Hi car. Betting on low car all day.
Sandro making a crazy face in the thumbnail this’ll be good
6:21 is a runaway diesel, says it in the title, although they call it a runaway turbo. Turbos are an incredibly overlooked service item. They don't get replaced or rebuilt nearly as often as they should, if ever. When the sealing rings on the turbine shaft wear out and they leak oil the engine burns it like fuel. That makes it rev, making the turbo spin faster, making it ingest more oil, making it basically feed itself in a cycle ultimately leading to self- destruction. Turn the ignition off if you want, it wont help. You have to stall the engine out or suffocate the turbo by blocking off the intake. If the o-ring on the back of the compressor housing is bad enough there is the potential you wont be able to completely suffocate it.
I like this channel. Angelina and Sandro are great at making me aware of how little I understand and I appreciate that. My mechanic deserves every tip I give them.

I love Sandro and Angelina they are just a whole vibe
Sandro for the boys!!!
I always told my tuners get as much as you can safely, it doesn’t need to be max power
6:22 that´s called a runaway diesel. Diesel cars dont need spark to ignite the fuel and if fuel (or oil) gets uncontrollably into the cylinder(ECU error or Diesel Pump error or Oil Pump error), it can ignite by itself. If this happens, the car will rev uncontrollably, until the engine blows itself up or you block the intake. Thankfully this happens very rarely. (this would be a great Donut video. You can make a diesel engine run away and explain how that happend)
You’d think they would know that based on the fact that it says that on the video they’re watching lol
That volvo looked like a diesel run away 🤷🏻♂️
I always take issue with the generalization that Turbochargers get free energy from the exhaust. Much of the energy is "free", in that it comes from the exhaust venting out of the exhaust port, however, the backpressure from the turbine causes increased pumping loses. The piston has to move upward on the exhaust stroke to evacuate the cylinder, and the turbocharger increases the restriction. So, the crankshaft does supply some of the energy to run the turbocharger.
Conversely, forced induction reduces the pumping lose on the intake stroke, though they increase the loses on the compression stroke.
Very hilarious! Angelina's explanations are top notch!
Sandro mentioned "the boys!" Take a shot.

Love both of these folks. They know their stuff, and they seem like they'd be a blast to drink a beer with 🙂
In the "no shaft play" segment, the zero side-to-side shaft play applies to ball bearing turbos. Journal bearing turbos, by design, need a little bit of play for there to be a passage for oil. With journal bearings, you should be checking for any in/out play or enough side-to-side play that makes the blades hit the housing.
Thank you! I was hoping at least one other person would recognize the difference between journal and ball bearing turbos.
I was thinking the same. There's a few things that, while they're not wrong, they're not completely right either.
Tbf I dont expect them to give every possible explanation for every situation but there has been a couple of times where I've thought 'well hang on thats not entirely true, isit...'

Sandro: “Ghosts. Is ghosts.”
If only Angelina had an intuitive understanding of how things function as a unit as well as part of the whole. Angelina would then be world-class.
This was such a good episode. The way they all roll off each others comments and vibe is awesome to see
Sandro is great. I would love to see him take apart more things or explain unofficial creative ways he has solved things. That's a real mechanic. Modern day cars aren't built for repairs, only for replacements, and therefore modern day mechanics don't have the kind of creativity and experience they had 20 years ago.
The Volvo at 6:28 was most likely a diesel runaway victim. Simply put, the nature of compression ignition engines meant the accidental overboost might make the combustion chamber hot enough to self-sustain the combustion cycles. Without a hard fuel and air intake cut the poor thing will rev itself up to death.
Other than that, this is yet another reminder to you folks there that making stupid powers with forced induction ain’t just gonna cut it if you don’t do it safely and reliably. As always, the RMS crew is a fun and chill addition to Donut and I’d love to see more of them around.
Loved how Sandro about lost it explaning shaft play lol
Just a thought, maybe have an episode where the mechanics just tell crazy, funny, scary stories there experienced in their careers. I think Sandro said he saw a dude die one time. Maybe not that one but the dudes seen some sht. And that older dude too I bet he's got some good stuff.
