    I love the one with the weird smile and no-face helmet. I can also dig Felthius, though the face in general is a bit too Voldemort-y. But smiles, man. Ain't nothing creepier than smiles when it's on the face of something slowly, inexorably walking towards you. I imagine a DG battlefield is filled with low, silent laughter. Not mirthful, belly-shaking laughs. Not edgy grunt-laughing. But a constant drone of "hehehe". From most of them. As they approach. And you try to stop them, but you can't. And you shoot them in their stupid, smiling faces but the laughing still doesn't stop. Pretty sure one of 'em sprouted an extra mouth there just to laugh some more.
    And the little daemon bebes definitely cackle maniacally, in a higher pitch. Same with the Poxwalkers.
    And why wouldn't they laugh, really. Papa Nurgle always wins in the end.

    Death guard is my first and so far only army, and I do find it hard to look at my terminator squads and feel like the fly boy fits in. Compared to the other models, his only traits are fly traits, no bone spikes, teeth, or extra pipes, he kinda just comes off as a possessed that tagged along because he's the only one that could carry the reaper autocannon. Felthius and his cohort look like concept models made legitimate, all of their Nurgle-esque features are super sized and done up to draw attention, and each one has their features done in one colour to see if they pair well with their armour and to see if it fits the theme.

  • @mikev8746
    @mikev8746 Před 4 lety +2

    I actually really like all the extra effects and details, things such as the smoke, the flies, blisters, mutations. It really helps set the army range apart from anything else. Without these details DG would just be another version of green space marines. These things sure are challenging to paint but that's just a process that comes down to research, refinement, skill and the broadening of some techniques previously not used. But I can see how these things would be to taxing, I can't even imagine what year I'd be having the time to paint this army up. But army range wise, it's outstanding.

    • @foulmoodcentral2830
      @foulmoodcentral2830 Před 4 lety

      Agreed! there's alot of details and mutations on them that can easily be removed if wanted, but allows the range to be very varied and stand out, after all Nurgle gifts them with constant shifting diseases to take shape and spread. making each varied and stand out on the blightlords is alot of fun, bone-stalks, tentacles, buboes, teeth, blisters, horns, having them appear different with nearly every model adds to the intended chaos of their faction.

    • @mikev8746
      @mikev8746 Před 4 lety

      @@foulmoodcentral2830 Yep, it's a 'unique selling point' regarding the model range. It just happens to come in the form of organic details which are obviously daunting to paint. The design team has really elevated the Death Guard with these fine details, so much so that even regular infantry look unique from one another. However I still believe GW could do better regarding the assistance, guiding and education of painting all models. For example I still have to contact Eavy Metal painters for certain recipes or I have to use my eye and do days of research trying to figure out how they achieved a certain look. Thankfully they mostly use Citadel paints otherwise it would have been impossible and you could certainly "put your own twist on it" but even in this department GW might release an in-depth guidebook on how color spotting works, how to pick paints in general, how to mix them, use certain techniques and such. They release these amazing models painted up in all their splendor and there's just very little information for the consumer to get their hands on. It really stays a self-help hobby which is fine for the dedicated, but I can completely understand why some people wish to remove all these mutations because they simply have no clue how to paint it vs say more square looking power armor.

    Collecting Death Guard here! Thank you for the review, I have to agree that some of them look a bit too comical or over the top, but can be fixed easily and some can look great: just built the plague marines and my favorite has to be the one with the blight launcher, for which I used all parts with maggots, he looks like it's more maggots inside the armor than Astartes, but it's a subtle effect. • @jw7500
    @jw7500 Před 4 lety +12

    Why I like the Death Guard as a concept, this entire range feels overdesigned to me. Also the GW paintjob does not do them favours as they don't seem disgusting bloated sick creations with that paintjob, but just dudes in green armor

    • @TheDirtysouthfan
      @TheDirtysouthfan Před 4 lety +1

      From what I understood, the range is actually based off of one of the game designers customized armies. Which I think is awesome, to be honest. The models and paint schemes have been more passion projects of the designers nowadays and you can really see the love in GW's new models, especially when they make models for stuff like Rogue Trader, with new Kroot models and even more obscure forgotten parts of 40k like Demiurg and Zoat models. It's also why Tau are painted in a pale white and red Vior'la scheme rather than Tau Sept as it used to be; one of the Eavy Metal painters had an army in that scheme and marketing loved it, so they changed the default scheme for Tau.

    I appreciate this a lot as a DG player! Gives me another angle to look at the army. Would‘ve been cool if you had reviewed the extra minis in dark imperium box too :)
    The plague marine reinforcements are cool but really too expensive.

    Great review, would disagree on the reasoning behind the gun horns you complained about, if not the execution. A marine doesn't have to carry their weapon 24/7 for it to become an extension of their body, even loyalists do that. Living in the eye literally causes their emotional attachments to their wargear to become manifest through stuff like weapons gaining the appearance of their owner in subtle ways. As I say, I'm not too sure of the execution on that particular combi bolter but in theory it does fit with the lore.

    This video can basically be summed up by considering each models’ Terminator/fly ratio.

    I feel like the reason you dislike the grinning faces is because you're forgetting that nurgles followers actually are quite the merry bunch.
    Never made sense to me, but thats how GW wrote them in the lore..

    Most of the range is too busy and goofy for my taste, I like the OOP FW death guard upgrade kits a lot more, they looked more grim.

    I like deathguard as a concept along with gameplay but the execution in models is rough I find
    The good are poxwalkers, noxious blightbringer , vehicles and mortarion where as anything that is space marine based look kind of weird with the amount of tentacles they have and the scaling of body parts.
    Overall still debating adding a deathguard auxiliary force to my iron warriors for some extra toughness and objective holding
    I'd rather they all look more like morty with his more zombie esq appearance with horns.

    Personally, RE: Typhus, I'd have preferred a pose like his art in the book. It's stationary but stoic and very intimidating. But I can see that stoic don't sell models.

    Lot of choices with the plague marines so luckily you can cut out the stuff you don't like. But I agree with the over-complication issue, they're my first ever army and are terrifying to paint which is weird considering they are part of the starter set.

    Great video the only disagreement I have with you is the biologious putrifier (God knows if that’s spelt correctly) as it feels different to the rest of the entire Death Guard line. To ‘clean’ just not enough iconography and pestilent fecundity for me. It is also the only model in the entire range still sitting unpainted on my desk 🤔

    You felt a little nit-picky about some of the infantry models, if only because I've put together a lot of those kits that aren't easy to build, and the options mean you get sooo much variety. If anything, you can make your own models among the Plague Marines, Blightlord Termies, and Deathshroud Termies as over-the-top or regular as you want across the board. And as far as the Foetid Bloat Drones go... I've got 4!

    I took one look at Felthius's face and realized that it is the troll face meme made into a GW model. Which for DG is kind of fitting. Who knew that GW had a sense of humor?

  • @dominiquepereirapalacios7031

    What a coincidence, I just ordered my first Death Guard units to have something to do during lockdown! I agree with you that some models are way overdone, still love the theme and the look of the army, though.

      @@jpem4664 Never was a fan of that I must admit as I was around from before that was a thing.
      Mainly as there was a really great little bit of fluff before a Epic battle report of a regular Thousand Sons space marine compartimalizing his memories deciding which of his recent experiences are worth keeping and which can be forgotten given that even for a 10k year old renegade his mind is finite.
