  • Today we take a look at the Nighthaunt range from Age of Sigmar, and I remain convinced that it's one of the most solid ranges that Games Workshop do.

    Easily some of the best models that Games Workshop has produced. The Black Coach is the model that got me interested in AoS in the first place.

    i'll just say after dry brushing most of the range. even with how fragile they look sometimes. they can bend way more without snapping than i would have thought and honestly it's very impressive with how the models are designed

    I got into AOS because of the nighthaunt. By the way on the executioner, the spirit host is a rule he has that gives him a 5 of save against mortal wounds. So they are representing the rule on the model.

    The Tomb Banshee that came in the issue of Mortal Realms that I bought came with a plain round base. The model comes with a textured 20mm square base on its sprue, but the magazine says not to use it. I cut off its bevel and stuck the textured part onto the round base. The same applies to the Cairn Wraith, it comes with a square base on the sprue but was packaged with a round base.

      I've done that with mine, along with a Tomb King and Savage Orc boss, a decent pair of clippers, cut along each corner on one side, and slowly trim the sides down, takes about 10 minutes, but it's worth it.

    I was building the Endless Spells at work on my lunch break. The crazy woman sat in the cubicle behind me yelled to get the manager for a computer issue. It startled me and I snapped one of the skulls as I was gluing it into the treasure chest. I modeled it closed and like the look better.

  • @anotherzingbo
    @anotherzingbo Před 4 lety +3

    I'm painting up some of these for Warcry at the moment. I like that generally they can be painted quickly and still look good. My absolute favourite out of the ones I've done have to be the Glaivewraith Stalkers. They go together easily, were easy to paint and, Kirioth, how can you not like their heads! Horse skulls, sheep skulls, they're excellently creepy and I love them!
    Other than that, buildwise the Spirit Hosts are an absolute pain and the nasty join across the top of several of the Myrmourn Banshees' shrouds deserves a mention. Paintwise the Grimghast Reapers are a bit annoying because their chainmail and cloak trims mean they can't be painted as quickly and easily as the Glaivewraiths and Chainrasps could. The Spirit Torment from the Soul Wars box is also very prone to vibrations thanks to being attached to the base with one small join at the far end of their body.
    But still I should return to my initial point that overall the models look nice and I'm finding them quick to paint (while still looking decent), which is a rare thing for me!

  • @AndrewMcColl
    @AndrewMcColl Před 4 lety +2

    If the solo Banshee is anything like the Wight Lord, the blister will come with a round base and instructions to trim the sides of the square base and glue it to the round one. Seems weird, but that's what happens when you make fancy bases then change the base type.

  • @mihalyorsovszki1498
    @mihalyorsovszki1498 Před 4 lety

    Fairly certain the reason for the tomb banshee coming with a square base is that the base is one of the ones that were on the sprue and were part of the model, so it's not just a case of swapping out the base it's packaged with. The Dark Elf Sorceress and the Black Ark Fleetmaster models are examples of a similar thing, where their scenic base was molded as part of the sprue, and in fact their feet are molded to the base. This was a design choice that was mainly prevalent during late 7th, and during 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy.

  • @raymondwright5996
    @raymondwright5996 Před 3 lety

    The Cairn Wraith came with a square base also. That and the banshee were the proof of concept models for the Nighthaunt range, before Warhammer Fantasy Battles ended.

  • @darrenrichardson6146
    @darrenrichardson6146 Před 4 lety

    The Cairn wraith and Tomb Banshee are both old models, as are the Hex Wraiths, all three are from the old Vampire Counts range, the Banshee does come with a round base these days, but for some reason they haven't changed the write up, thankfully, unlike some of the older Character models , the banshee just glues onto the square and doesn't have anything integrated like the Tomb King or Savage Orc boss, both of which have feet moulded into the bases.
    And yes, the Banshee does come in Mortal Realms, the magazine even says to throw the base away as you won't use it!
    And we 'll be getting almost the entire range in Mortal realms spread over the 80 weeks.....

  • @Delveintohobby
    @Delveintohobby Před 4 lety

    There's a couple of models that come with those square bases, my Wight King came with one, but it was a part of the sprue and it connects to the model itself . Thankfully there was also a circular base chucked in the blister, but it was pretty annoying to have to chop up the original base and file it down to be flush with the circle base. The Chaos Lord on foot seems to be the same way as well.

    Both the Cairn Wraith and Banshee come with pre-detailed, moulded onto the sprue, square bases that you need to clip down to fit on a round base (the Wraith you can actually get away with just gluing straight to a round base as he connects via that small rock). The Banshee takes a tiny bit more effort, but both are late stage Warhammer Fantasy kits so that's not too bad all things considered.

  • @Craamron
    @Craamron Před 4 lety

    There's a Chaos Lord who also has a square base for the same reason, the detail is built into it. The base comes on the sprue and it's an old Fantasy model from when they were all square. The Cairn Wraith is as old as the Banshee and if you look at the sprue you'll see that he also comes with a square base but his model is designed in a way where you can easily transplant him onto any other base.

    Cairn Wraith is still awesome, really holds up. And Nighthaunt were born.

  • @Malisteen
    @Malisteen Před 4 lety +4

    My main issue with the range is there's a bit much redundancy. The Reapers, Revenants, and Chainghasts are all too similar in appearance. I wish they didn't all have that same studded leather trim on their hoods. It's a bigger problem mechanically - there aren't nearly enough units in the Nighthaunt army for so very many of them - Reapers, Revenants, Stalkers, Haridans, and Banshees - to be semi-elite melee infantry with such similar stat blocks and offensive profiles. They've got a few unique mechanics to distinguish them, but they're still way to similar in overall battlefield role, and the reapers and revenants looking like the same unit with just a weapon swap doesn't help.
    Taken individually, though, there's a lot of really lovely models here. The starter box knight of shrouds is especially great. And there's nothing I actively dislike, apart from some of the old models. The wraith and banshee character models just do not hold up, not when there are larger, more detailed, and more dynamic versions of the same models as regular trooper models in some of the units, and the hexwraiths don't even look look like they belong in the rest of the range. I'd honestly rather the unit was dropped from Nighthaunts altogether and the same models, with a less ghostly paint scheme, were added to deathrattle instead.

  • @JohnnyLeyenda
    @JohnnyLeyenda Před 2 lety +1

    I've always wondered why some amazing models like the Banshees that have 4 in one box with amazing poses and even sculpted bases are like a third of the price of a generic Space Marine or Stormcast captain or whatever that's only 1 model with a plain base. Well, weird GW pricing I guess, but I'm not complaining, sticking to their skirmish games has made it better for my wallet.

    Thing about the cartoony face & not liking the harridans, I think it might be the mandible/lower jaw being SUPER prominent in the overall face of the model.
    But about not liking them, I am thoroughly apathetic towards them, they have a Tyranid feel with the scything talons that doesn't to me fit with the rest of the range. I mean props to the guys for trying something with the range but I don't think that in this instance it worked. And that's Good! not every experiment is destined for greatness, like personally as an Ad Mech Man I REALLY don't like electropriests in their models as they don't really _feel_ efficient like Ad Mech or Robo-Roman like the rest of their range. It's a bit of a tragedy for me that they're like the only way to be competitive with the army now, but Oh Well, I never really get into the rules anyway.

Also my friend who does collect stormcasts already has the kits. I wouldn’t want to get it just for the Nighthaunt (although they are my favourite army). Cherry picking Mortal Realms just for the ghosts and graveyard. The Harridans are about the only ghosts I've passed on so far. I think it's a case of a different designer working on them in what's mostly a Brian Nelson army. Transitioning to AoS I kept my Nelson orcs and ogres as a mixed Destruction army, sold the few metal bits left of my old, much battered, Empire army and put my early 2000s Dark Elves aside, hopefully they'll get some new life when The Old World hits. So pretty much just a Nelson collector in fantasy armies these days.

    My big problem with Nighthaunt is that a lot of the models look the same from the other side of the table. They lack the differentiation that units from other armies have. It makes the army look samey and a little bland.

    I like many of these nighthaunt models... mostly because they look like ghosts. if i fired an arrow at any of these, i would 100% expect that attow to pass though them, and do nothing.

    Great Video! How did you paint the blends on the cloaks for your own army? I am thinking about building a Nighthaunt army but am intimidated by the prospect of wet blending an entire army. I do have an airbrush but I’m not sure the best way to approach the blends. Other than that, the models look so cool. Great Job!
