  • Today I work on one of the simplest things in blacksmithing: S-hooks. To try to become more efficient at making them, I create a new tool for my hardy hole and work out which materials are easiest.

Practice makes perfect, and now that you have a good system down, even with some tweaking you'll do great.

One of my Aprenticees. is also working on S-hooks. I will give you a couple of tips that helped him a lot. But not sure if it will help you very much as you have a very good and detailed ''EYE" for accuracy. and that is a hard talent to teach. Most adjustment in scrolls are needed because of differences in the taper length and thickness. and how flat you are keeping it int eh jig and where you are stopping in the jig. A simple chalk line on the anvil from an edge with give you repeatable lengths to quickly measure to on the tapers. Drilling holes in the jig the size of the two pieces of stock you use allows you to weld from the back side of the jig plate. this allows you to get the s-hook al the way flush to the plate. If you then make a mark or a stop pin on the jig plate to know where to stop your bend. These tips usually work to help with adjustments. I love that you are doing multiples at the same time. This is truly the best way to build repetition of accuracy and muscle memory. Another great vid Sir. Hope to see many more in the future.

Great tips! I will take those things into consideration on my next batch of hooks and any future hook jigs. Thanks!
