  • Follow along as I make a "side set" tool for the power hammer. It's used to make a triangular or slanted setdown into a work piece, typically to isolate a section for further forging.

You have the nicest video format on CZcams. While you do talk from time to time you do not feel compelled to train the camera on your face and run your jaws like so many others. A picture is worth a thousand words, yet some feel the need to spray a thousand words at us. You seem like a really humble guy. God bless.

I agree although sometimes the topic requires an explanation to be spoken verbally. The thing about blacksmithing videos is that the video itself can fully explain what’s happening because you can watch it happening, so words aren’t really needed.

The problem with other channels are they keep doing “how to” videos over and over. Most of us just like to watch a person work and what they are creating. I’ve been smithing for years, I don’t need a how to video. If I’m trying to learn something I can see what’s happening in the video. No need to explain heat treating and how a forge works in every video 🤦‍♂️

I'm also a blacksmith. I enjoy watching the different techniques. There's no right or wrong, but safety is not negotiable. This channel does use all the safety steps that are required but I've seen some on CZcams that leave a lot to be desired. For all of you new blacksmiths, alway wear ear and eye protection. I know you may wonder why eye protection, but every once in a while you will feel chips of metal fly to your face. Sometimes they sell you the wrong metal. An experience blacksmith will know right away, but students might not know and be injured by this. Also, proper ventilation is always essential. Don't get cheap unless you want to damage your lungs. Last but not least, the hearing protection should be rated at a minimum of 30 decibels. The higher the better. You can never go too high. Enjoy blacksmithing in a safe way.

If only I had the means to create my own tools, I'd do so. When I need one, I have to buy it and I cringe at the cost. You on the other hand, can just go out to the workshop and forge one. Forging seems to be a very handy and lucrative skill, one of which that many can be very envious of.

Though one thing I can tell you is, seeing your anvil, I've always loved the idea of them. Ever since I was a little kid, I've loved anvils - such a big, heavy, solid, sturdy chunk of steel.
I worked in a steel fabricating company for a while when I was 17 (1967). It was with a bunch of old, crusty, hardcore, smoking, steel workers... the best summer job.
