Glen: May I send you a picture of simple adjustable jig I made for the vise? I think you woul enjoy it. Thanks, Eric Sprado.. Be glad to share with anybody.. In the fifties and sixties NOBODY willingly share things unless it was in a master/apprenticeship relationship. Now,as an old man, I can watch smiths in their shops all over the world.. wonderful
Simple is brilliant !
Woodworkers say "You can never have enough clamps." In our kitchen, we can never get enough hooks. This handy idea solves the problem of making attractive bespoke hooks. Thanks Glenn.
Dav, I'm glad if this helps you in any way. Nothing fancy here but works well for me. Thanks.
Brillant idea! For sure gonna use it.
What a great idea. Ty for the idea.
Larry, It's simple but works. Thanks. Glen
Fenomenal GLEN GS T.
Good simple and effective tool. Nice.
George, Nothing fancy here. But this always works for me. Thanks.
When forging a taper if you make the end into a very steep taper first it keeps the end from splitting and cracking
Finley, That's good information. Thanks for watching and sharing. Glen
I'm not trying to encourage anyone to do something unsafe, but the risk associated with galvanized steel is greatly exaggerated. I used to work in a welding shop cutting and welding on galvanized steel for hours and hours and never got sick. I'm sure if you are in an enclosed space (which you shouldn't really be anyway due to forge needing ventilation) you can get sick but you almost have to do it intentionally to breathe in enough fumes. Safer is better, but i see alot of ridiculous safety nerds who probably never work steel anyway. Great idea!
In my opinion, your post is very good. Of course we need to take safety precautions and should stress that others be aware of potential dangers. Nothing wrong with that. But some folks really go overboard and never seem to get past a certain point since everything needs to be overly considered before attempting... There's a certain degree of risk involved in just getting out of bed (or even staying in bed!) each day. Thanks.
The problem is two fold I believe. You have the inexperienced who use galvanised and inhale the fumes and get metal fume fever because they did not use venting or was overexposed. The other side is the expert who gets sloppy, and exposed themselves unwittingly. The research I did showed a Smith who had put pieces in his gas forge believing he could burn the galvanize off the pipe. He was dead in a very short time from metal fume fever. I know enough that I don't know enough about it to be safe around it so I choose not to use it in any forge application. I also don't recommend it for any aspiring smiths to use because people don't use better judgement when it comes to personal safety. This society has to have warning labels to not use hairdryers and toasters while in the shower. Know what I mean?
Hey ho! Hello GS. Jepp, that’s cool. I guess it works on every diameter. Thanks 4sharin.
Hi, you can use different diameter pipes for sure. Thanks for watching.
Who makes those anvils and where can I get one? Nice work too!
Ricky, Those anvils are my own design which I had made here in Taiwan, where I live. I've spoken about them before in previous videos but will do a more in-depth video soon. Thanks.
GOOD AND SIMPLE
Lucas, I'm glad you like it. Thanks. Glen
Great info thank you
Keith, I'm glad you found this informative in any way. Thanks for watching. Glen
where did you get that anvil? Niiiicccceeee
The anvil is my own design which I had made here in Taiwan. Glad you like it. Thanks.
Nice little DYI
Russell, Just a very simple method that can produce good results. Thanks.
I use a socket handle in the vice, then pick the size socket I need to make the curve I want.
Jack, I never thought of that. That would've made and even better video... Good idea. Thanks.
Glen GS Tongs : All of my sockets are either 1/4" drive or 1/2" drive, so they'd only be good for small curves. But the idea behind your video is very flexible and suits the scrap tubing diameter we have in our junk pile.
I like simple. Simple is my middle name. Thanks, Jerry
Hi Jerry (I assume it's you). Me too, I like simple. Thanks very much for the donation. Glen
how is the slip jaw tongs mr. tong. perfected yet
George, Yes, I've pretty much finished my design for that slip joint style. but with me, everything is in the process of evolving. Sorry for the slow reply. Thanks.
Awesome
Sander, Glad you like this. Thanks for watching. Glen
Did you make your anvil
David, I designed and had my block style anvils made here in Taiwan, where I live. I had three styles made and am happy with them all. Very functional and suit my small space and work style. Thanks for watching.
SAFETY WARNING: If you're going to use galvanized pipe (as shown in the video), remove the zinc plating first!!! Heating galvanized pipe creates zinc oxide fumes, which can make you VERY sick. A couple hours' soak in strong vinegar will take off the plating, and you'll be good to go.
John, This is good safety information. I am working outside and am aware to avoid the fumes but this may help someone who doesn't know. Plus, the vinegar soak could be very useful. Thanks for sharing.
What this guy said, vinegar strips zinc pretty quickly. If you know you can get away with breathing gal, or don't think it's going to affect you, fine. But as a general rule, don't put gal in the fire, unless you tell people not to put gal in the fire and that what you're doing can kill you.
Good sir its easy and locking beautiful
Yasir, I'm glad you like this. And thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
good idea man
Thanks for watching. Take care.
Still not messing with galvanized
That's understandable. Thanks.
L
Thanks for watching.
Why anyone need this ?
Ridiculous....
