Fun fact: This was the first ever episode of the show that did NOT feature at least one appearance by any members of the Stark family. The drama with the Lannisters took up so much time that there was nowhere they could insert even a short scene with a Stark. And if you were paying attention, on the first few seasons, Theon was always portrayed as someone who loves being with girls, they always emphasized that part about him. This was setup so well.
This show was truly remarkable when it had book's material. When they didn't, the level of the show decreased, specially when George RR Martin left by the end of season 5 because they wanted to cut the show short and Martin disagreed with that. Shame, it had some good eps the in later seasons, but you could tell the writing was nowhere near the level of the 1st 4 seasons.

Another fact is that a lot of the evidence against Tyrion was actually done by him, and during the trial (in the books) he cursed himself for being witty in his answers. He poisons Cersei with some kind of laxative to put her out of power for a little bit, he's a bit more...rougher...with Joffrey, kicking him a bunch while he was on the ground (though he deserved it). Just goes to show how important perception is. Everyone hated Tyrion, even if he didn't deserve it, and we sympathize with him, because we know his thoughts, but no one else does. And from that perspective, he seems pretty shitty.

That was really Tywin's main motivation in going along with the show trial. He didn't kill Joffrey, but in Joffrey's death he saw an opportunity to get Jaime out of King's Landing and have him start a family, aka the conversation they had at the start of the season. He calculated Jaime will fold under pressure to save his brother. It was all going along so smoothly until Tyrion threw a wrench in his plan and now it's going to be an absolute insane whirlwind of a ride.

A couple of comments in support of Spartan:
    1) I know smug viewers with the blessing of hindsight may not recognize this but Spartan’s guess that Theon may be used to exploit trust thereby gaining access to the Greyjoy’s stronghold in Pike and eliminating Balon is a good theory at this point in the story with the limited info at hand.
    2) His summation that the Iron Bank would most likely be playing both sides of the field rather than picking one team and forsaking the other is spot on. It’s not a huge stretch to come at this because we see it play out in our own lives constantly as politicians are bought and payed for on both sides of the aisle by the same people hedging their bets. Still a good call since it wasn’t explicitly stated and shows a clear understanding of that identical dynamic demonstrated in the Game of Thrones that is at its weirwood roots nothing if not political.

How do you rule wisely when your enemies are ruthless and amoral? Do the ends justify the means in terms of what you have to do to stay in power and serve people? Tywin for a few brief moments had everything he ever wanted, his preferred son (Jamie) as his official heir, his hated son (Tyrion) being sent off to the Night's Watch to never bother him again. Tyrion knew that Tywin now had everything he ever wanted and with Shae's betrayal he decided to take it all away from Tywin, proving that he was truly his father's son. Peter Dinklage truly earned his Emmy in that scene.

From what I’d guess, Varys already knows Tywin will have the trial go however he wants it to. So, while he is testifying against Tyrion, he isn’t adding any facts that would hurt Tyrion any more than he already is. I still don’t know if he could have handled it any better, but definitely something that is worth pointing out.

No spoilers ~ From wikipedia ~ About Peter Dinklage and Tyrion Lannister
"Between 2011 and 2019, Dinklage portrayed Tyrion Lannister in HBO's fantasy drama Game of Thrones, an adaptation of author George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Game of Thrones takes place on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos and chronicles the power struggles among noble families as they fight for control of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. Tyrion is a member of House Lannister, one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in Westeros, and uses his status as a Lannister to mitigate the impact of the marginalization and derision he has received all of his life.
In May 2009, he was the first actor to be cast, as showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss noted that Dinklage, whom they described as funny, smart and witty, was their first choice for the role, as the actor's "core of humanity, covered by a shell of sardonic dry wit, is pretty well in keeping with the character."
Unfamiliar with the source material, Dinklage was cautious in his first meeting with the producers; as a dwarf, "he wouldn't play elves or leprechauns" and was choosy about genre roles. Benioff and Weiss told Dinklage that the character was "a different kind of fantasy little person," or in the actor's words, "No beard, no pointy shoes, a romantic, real human being." Dinklage signed on to play Tyrion before the meeting was half over, in part because, he said, "They told me how popular he was." Martin said of Dinklage's casting, "If he hadn't accepted the part, oh, boy, I don't know what we would have done." The series proved to be a commercial success; it was renewed for multiple seasons and concluded with its eighth season in May 2019.
Dinklage received widespread critical praise for his performance. Matthew Gilbert from The Boston Globe said that Dinklage "gives a winning performance that is charming, morally ambiguous, and self-aware." Dan Kois of The New York Times noted that Dinklage's performance has made the character "all the more popular." The Los Angeles Times wrote "In many ways, Game of Thrones belongs to Dinklage." HuffPost called Tyrion the "most quotable" character and "one of the most beloved characters" of the series.
For his performance, he has gone on to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2011, 2015, 2018, and 2019, as well as the 2012 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. As a result of his performance and increased screen time, Dinklage was given top billing starting in the series' second season. In 2014, he said on The Late Show with David Letterman that he had once tried to read the books the show is based upon, but had found them confusing. He joked, "George Martin, our author, is probably going to kill my character soon because I mentioned that." In 2014, Dinklage and four of his Game of Thrones co-stars became some of the highest paid actors on television, although sources differ on the actors' per-episode salaries. In 2015, Dinklage lent his voice for the role of Tyrion in Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series, a video game based on the show."
