    They didn’t want to pass the show to someone else for more seasons.
    They didn’t want to stick to George’s story notes.

    • @bliczb8772
      @bliczb8772 Před 2 lety +35

      And the one "foreshadowing", if I can even call it that way, that they did follow on resulted in one of the most mortifying examples of character assassination know to mankind. Hell, Daenerys isn't even my favorite character, that goes to Tywin Lannister, but she was a strong character.
      Besides, one thing to note - Foreshadowing is an indication of future event from a smaller event from the past, not significant when first introduced. Foreshadowing IS NOT reasoning for future event to occur. The reasoning gets delegated to other scenes and discussion on character. If you find yourself using small piece of foreshadowing to solely excuse an event in the future, you likely became a hack writer who tries to get a payoff you want but cannot have.
      Other then that, dumb and dumber forgot or ignored contextual explanation for the scenes they tried to pass off as "foreshadowing".
      Hell, and episode itself had a montage of quotes that'd even indicate it... Method itself is one of the slimiest imaginable.

But since cast were loved, people still watched the season even if they say it was 🤢 from the beginning.
      Same happened with StarWars sequels. Mark Hamill did the same. It happened like a year or 2 after the heat of 7,8,9 that the cast finally speak their mind about what they thought about it. Before that, it was "the best thin ever happened to star wars".

      I mean, book readers will know that there's a lot more foreshadowing and subtext with Dany, with the implication that she is literally part-dragon, e.g. blood of the dragon, and juggles her draconic nature in addition to her higher self. You can't really blame a dragon for being a dragon, though. They're not evil; they are what they are. The fact that Dany IS more than that is what makes it interesting. She's definitely going to do dark things/act as a conqueror in some context, but there's going to be serious internal conflict, which is what makes it interesting. It's not going to be stupid, ridiculous, unrepentant genocide for no reasons with almost no sensical character development. Given D&D supposedly had knowledge/plans of Dany unravelling a bit, even from the early seasons, the whole situation makes no sense with regards to how they built (and destroyed) her.

    • @unc54
      @unc54 Před rokem +16

      @@michaelafischer6177 There's even foreshadowing in the show but you need to build on that. You can't expect people to take the few isolated instances in the show where she goes overboard (and those moments were always grey rather than outright evil) and ignore that the vast majority of her actions are good. But D&D wanted it to be a twist so they lay none of the necessary groundwork and just point to those few instances of Danaerys oversteps as proof that we should accept her turning into Timur.

    • @alexmiller1800
      @alexmiller1800 Před rokem +11

      After watching Season 8 again and knowing what’s coming, it’s easier to spot the places where they did foreshadow things. Tyrion naming Bran King came completely out of the blue for me at the time, but Tyrion sat with Bran in Winterfell and asked to hear his story. As for Dany’s “fall” it kinda makes sense, it was just too rushed and felt too awkward. People like Olena Tyrell were pushing her to do monstrous things back in Season 7 but that only happened in one conversation. Dany’s snap came because she went from being the Breaker of Chains and beloved in Essos to being feared and ostracized in Westeros, and over the course of her wars, she lost everyone that grounded her. She stopped trusting Tyrion and Varys, Jorah died, Missandei died, 2 of her Dragons died, her Dothraki were “wiped out” but then came back for some reason, and of course she fell in love with Jon but he couldn’t handle the whole aunt-nephew thing and pushed her away. She was isolated and alone. Her last friends were Grey Worm and Drogon, not exactly what I’d call level-headed advisors. TBH, her fall makes sense when written out, but it REALLY NEEDED another Season or two to drive home her isolation and eventual snap.

      Season 3 _A Storm of Swords_ (1000/2 pages)
      Season 4 _A Storm of Swords_ (1000/2 pages)
      Season 5 _A Feast for Crows_ *AND* _A Dance with Dragons_ *AND* winging it from there on out... (1800+ pages)
      They made money for HBO, they could've even taken more time, a season every 2 years, not each year. It's totally normal. It's incompetency. :-( Like Season 5 in 2016 instead of 2015, season 6 in 2018, 7 in 2020, 8 in 2022, 9 in 2024. Remember, the half of GoT where they start departing from the books and have to create stories (s5-8) is bad, simple as that. We were distracted by the glowing fantasy element for a while, but when they decided to supress it it became obvious that there is no substance in this story. I get that D&D worked for about a decade on the show and maybe thought 'we actually also wanna do different stuff' and i fully support that desire. However the solution is not to speed through. They could've tried to negotiate a change of writers and slowly phase themselves out of the project and then leave it to new writers who would've had settled into the Game of Thrones routine alongside GRRM's guidance. It could've worked. But I still don't quite understand why they decided to rush through the last bit, they had a theoretically fail-proof IP on their hands. GOT was a cultural phenomenon that even I as someone who didnt watch it couldn't escape. So to see all that time, money, effort, cast&crew etc. + already established success go to waste seems so unbelievable.
