      Hauke Holst see this.
      The Eurovision Song Contest (also only Eurovision and often abbreviated as ESC, in French Concours Eurovision de la chanson), formerly known as Eurofestival, is a music event founded in 1956 organized by the European Broadcasting Union based in Geneva and inspired by the Sanremo Festival.
      From the first edition of 1956 the competition is broadcast every year and is one of the longest running television programs in the world. It is also the most popular non-sporting event in the world: the listening data of the last few years at international level have been estimated as something between 100 million and 600 million, growing enormously.
      Eurovision has also been broadcast outside Europe in places such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, South Korea, Egypt, the Philippines, Japan, Jordan, India, Morocco (which only once participated in 1980), Mexico, New Zealand, United States of America, Taiwan, Thailand, Uruguay and Venezuela, despite the fact that they do not participate in the tender (with the exception of Australia, which takes part in 2015). Since 2000, the competition has also been broadcast on the Internet, and in 2006 more than 74,000 people in nearly 140 countries followed the online edition.

    I hate it when people are trying to portray Eurovision as a nothing but a political show where the country who's been the good boy throughout the year takes it home. IT'S NOT. If it was really a political contest, then we would have the same results or at least similar results each year. Of course you can observe politics in the songs or in the voting but it's not much of a game-changer. And I also hate it when people think Eurovision is some sort of a freak show where people can win with monster costumes or with a bearded lady and etc. If you truly know what Eurovision is and have been watching it for many years, you would know that Eurovision is more than a freak show where politics decide who wins. People didn't vote for Conchita because of her beard or we don't like Italy just because of the ape on stage. Look behind the story. Please find and watch the previous years one by one without skipping the semi finals. You'll understand.

      Conchita won because she had amazing song, visuals that fit it and magnificent voice. Bad, boring or ungenuine messages drop the popularity, but rising from adversity, love and acceptance are just universally popular topics in pop songs. You need to stand out in Eurovision because there are over 40 new songs that most viewers haven't seen before, but standing out as bad isn't going to get any act points.

      @GazilionPT Před 7 lety +12

      It's not only the question of people thinking it's unfair. Showcasing on the semifinals may be very important to build up support.
      For example, Portugal's entry only reached #1 in the bookies odds on Friday (the day after the 2nd semi and before the final). If Portugal was one of the "big 5" and had direct access to the finals, Salvador Sobral would probably not gain enough momentum to win.

      Off the record:
      It's a musical war between countries, voting is like Greek drama, tragedy and comedy at once
      In addition to the quality of the song itself, the winner decides:
      policy (how much more we hate his country)
      scandalals around song and
      often a voice is given to a third person, everything if works if you can sunk enemy

    Unlike most in the US, I am a bit familiar with Eurovision, and it is a shame on us that the show hasn't been on TV here over the years on a regular basis. Only one American has been a winner, Katrina Leskanich of Katrina and the Waves in 1997, and, of course, the rest of the band is from the UK. That might be an answer. About the only winner most would recognize is ABBA, from 1974. "Waterloo" opened the door for their success. Sir Cliff Richard didn't hit until the mid-70's. Some winners do get records released in the US, especially if they're in English (multilingualism just doesn't seem to be our thing). Johnny Logan, Bucks Fizz and Brotherhood of Man all tried, with little success. Even the Waves' "Love Shine a Light" barely made a peep. There is nothing like it here; "Idol", "The Voice" and "X Factor", all based on UK shows, are the closest we have, though 'talent shows' have existed back to the days of network radio in the 1940's. Eurovision is unique, and underappreciated in the States. We have our own political circus over here, but it has little to do with music.

      From what I read the video recording is only of the second performance of the winning song in 1956, as we know every winner performances the winning song twice. What is isnteresting is that in 1956, as far the only time, every singer sang two songs. From what I know the recording of Lys Assia's second songfrom Eurovision 1956 "Das alte Karussell" is only available as an audio recording.

LGBT people like this contest because they feel normal here.The ESC (Eurovision Song Contest) always was inclusive, accepting diversity and more humane in relation with others, smaller countries, poor countries could participate with different conditions , human rights are the base for the rules. The managers EBU (european broadcasting union) trying to exclude politics but always is complicated and that is making more interesting... for short : Eurovision is extremely prestigious, no price money only national pride and hero for 1 year in your country!!!, is very old ( is a Record, longest running TV show in history), yes sometimes big winners Abba etc ( but usually not) .. so American Idol and Super Bowl put together on steroids then mixed with business, politics and circus.. then you have a half a picture what is like this festival here in Europe :)

It brings people together, it showcases culture, languages, various ethnicities, genders, sexualities and so on. Many europeans will have learned about geography & culture growing up watching Eurovision and from there people do their research etc and it truly is an amazing experience for all participating countries to be proud of! #Eurovision

      Pop Idol was a copycat show of Popstars, from New Zealand around 1999. Simon Fuller took the format and created Pop Idol in 2001. Cowell was just a judge on Idol. He took the format for his own X-Factor and to an extent also Britains Got Talent. Cowell wasn't the over critical judge on Idol, that was 'Nasty Nigel' Lythgoe. Judging panel pop shows no doubt go back a few decades before Popstars

    Eurovision is definitely NOT like american idol. But the other thing that annoyed me A LOT was that when the anchorman asked who she thought it was going to win she said Italy because they have a dancing ape and he's like "oh god, these weird europeans "... Gabbani's song was meant to be also fun and catchy, but there is more about it, it's not only "a dancing ape on a stage". They want to make it look like some sort of freak show, "who's gonna vote for a bearded lady in a nightgown?", well a lot of people since she won? Actually watch the show, instead of spreading completely wrong facts about it or trying to make it look stupid.

    We also have idols, the voice and X factor each country for themselves. Eurovision is the only big show where all countries are showing their candidate and we all vote for the one we like.

    It's weird that America is only getting "kinda into it" so recently, I mean, we live in the 21st century with social media and youtube right? It's only since about last year that eurovision is mentioned on popular american talk shows, TV stations and the REACT channel on youtube...

      You are right, we can only hope now that the teens of today realise that music is not only pop and that there so much things that they can listen to. But unfortunately, they will only realise this when they reach the adult age, and by that time they will be even more similar pop songs than today.

    • @TheGrindelwald
      @TheGrindelwald Před 6 lety +2

      I think this topic, that Sobral also touches gets understood in the wrong way. On one side I see people who enjoys classical music, perhaps they point at Beatles and how great music was in earlier times. On the other side you have every day music consumers who actually has their own musical taste and can actually speak for what they enjoy or not, perhaps without a fancy word for it.
      Music is music.
      No matter if you think it's crappy, overproduced or sold out, it's still music. And music evolves. Though the years people have discovered new ways of creating and sharing music. And people connect though music.
      There is no way to reach good music. I can be technically skilled, but people still want the emotional touch. I will never discriminate to put pop as something less worth than let's say Mozart. Mozart was good at writing music. He did tons of pieces. And some of them are rubbish. And some of them are fantastic. Just like pop music. Beatles made over 300 songs. Yes, some of them are classic. And some of them are rubbish.
      You can prefer a special sound, a special genre, or a special musician. This does not mean the other people are wrong. Just like when I say some songs or compositions are rubbish. That's my opinion. Just like when other people say pop music is rubbish. You can feel free to think like that. Just don't believe it's the only truth. Because music taste is subjective. If you don't like pop music, well then you perhaps haven't heard the right tune for you yet. Just like you could say about classical music, or folk music, or hiphop, or sacral music, or drum step, or madrigals, or jazz, or techno, or Schlager music, or EDM, or opera, or reggae, or musicals, or afropop, or rock music, or beatbox music, or punk music, or modern art music... and the list just goes on

    I know everyone talks about being irritated about then calling it similar to American idol, but notice how much they talk about Russia and other political problems. Why do they even bring stuff like that up, when it doesn’t even help explain, just makes it look like some political agenda shit that only Europeans do. Also how they specifically talk about the superbowl a few times. They do realise that eurovision attracts to a lot of countries and that the superbowl is majorly an American thing right?
    I mean what it looks to me like what they’re doing is that they have to talk about it but like show how weird and bad this show is that the Europeans made, and that stuff like the superbowl is better because it’s American. Idk that’s just how I feel.
