The Eurovision Song Contest is back!
Eurovision: You Decide is back for 2019 with a brand new format! Eurovision superfan Mel Giedroyc and the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2015, Mans Zelmerlow, host live from MediaCityUK in Salford as the show comes from the north west of England for the very first time.
This 90-minute Eurovision extravaganza gives viewers the opportunity to vote for the song they want to represent the UK at the biggest music competition in the world.
In an exciting format change, each of the three competing songs is performed in two different ways, by two different acts. A celebrity panel and viewers at home make the decision on which song represents the UK at the sixty-fourth Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Tel Aviv, Israel, in May 2019. The show features special performances and surprises.

As much flack as they get, BBC actually did great with this! Bringing MĂ„ns on was a stroke of genius.

The BBC put on decent shows - imagination costs nothing after all. Look at 98!

This is not really related but can both Mans and Petra host ESC forever already?đ

I think a shout out is needed for Edward af SillĂ©n who wrote and created this performance. Heâs the writer for Melfest, wrote the scripts for Eurovision 2013 and 2016 in Sweden (including the iconic Love Love Peace Peace) and as far as Iâm aware the scripts for the recent additions of You Decide, and it shows. Heâs truly a master script writer for these type of entertainment shows and an absolute genius when it comes to musical pieces with his wit and creativity (you can tell if Edward is in charge).
I had the honour of meeting him last year at You Decide as he came to chat with some of the fans and was the most humble man; asking what we thought of the show and whether it was funny. The BBC would be very smart to try and get him to work for them on a regular basis (I know heâs very well respected but those who know him and is friends with Graham Norton), but he is pretty loyal to SVT so I canât see that happening.
ANYWAY, Edward (as well as Mans) did a great job with this and deserves the recognition!!
I wanted to put this out there as well everybody is rightfully praising MĂ„ns, Edward deserves credit for making the show entertaining amongst the bland and uninspiring songs the BBC chose (nothing against the talented artists, but the songs theyâve were given were awful...the BBC needs to sort themselves out)
@@nashathegleek I completely agree with everything you've just said and this doesn't surprise me. I've already had two rants elsewhere on CZcams tonight about the BBC's lack of interest so I'm not going to rant on again but suffice to say the BBC really do need to sort themselves out or the EBU needs to give either Sky or ITV the rights - a broadcaster who'll put the effort into picking a decent song.
I do think Michael Rice was the best of the bunch but realistically, we all know in advance that we're going to get hammered the minute Europe starts voting because no one knows him (not even the Brits) while we all know in advance that Russia will either win (or come top 5) because they're going to be represented by a major worldwide star even if the song he sings ends up being absolute shit.
Anyway once again, well done to Mans and the equally talented Mel Giedroyc plus a big thank you to Edward af Sillén for at least making the pre-selection enjoyable.
AND beyond all these great accomplishments there's the fact that Edward is Brazilian. As far as I know, he was born in the state of Santa Catarina and adopted by a Swedish family when he was quite young, but at least I can have some pride being an ESC fan from Brazil.
Arthur Mezacasa Oh I didnât know that, but thatâs a really interesting back story!
He also tends to do the live comments of the Eurovision finals, even the Oscars. And the fact he knows a lot about Eurovision means he can easily write something like this. But I doubt, he living in Sweden, he could deliver a full show with the same comedic touch as he does with Melodifestivalen, for the simple fact that he lives in Sweden, not the UK, and therefore will not have much to spin jokes around - except anything related to Eurovision. But there are plenty of great comedic writers in the UK who easily is of the same standard as Edvard, but who also have the inside knowledge of British society, current affairs and popular culture to deliver something similar to what Edvard delivers for Melodifestivalen, but better adapted to a UK audience and setting.
The one you really should study and copy, because he is the guy who has been in charge of Melodifestivalen for donkeys years now, an era when Sweden has performed better than any other nation in that competition, is Christer BjĂžrkman. He is the guy in charge of everything from selecting presenters, and writers like Edvard, to deciding the running order of the songs, and also have a say in how they are selected and presented. Melodifestivalen is a huge success mainly for two reasons: BjĂžrkman`s dedication and enthusiasm for the competition - and for the fact the acts that do well in Eurovision will secure their artists gigs for the coming summer, thanks to the many summer festivals around Sweden.
The problem for the UK is that it is not the major players on the music scene who takes part. They have to much to lose, so the UK keeps sending either hasbeens or new comers, and the songs are not penned by the Cathy Dennis` and colleagues either, but far more unknown and less merited song writers.
Had it not been for the big 5 rule, UK most likely would have been knocked out of the semis every single year, with the exception of Blue and the Andrew Lloyd Webber song that came 5th the year Norway won with Alexander Rybak and Fairytale, over the last 10-15 years - and Blue had international help and a solid fanbase to help them, and Andrew Lloyd Webber is Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The one thing the UK did right with their national selection this year. Mans Zelmerlow.

A swedish audience would never clap along with the song. This is British thing to clap for everything; when the aeroplane lands, when their food arrives, when the lights go out.

@skeleton tiger The script for this sketch was by Edward af Sillén (Eurovision 2013, 2016).
This is very true
If UK send MĂ„ns, maybe they will win đđđ
Mmm no, televote will destroy they
We could send Adele and we'd still lose. It's political. We are the biggest and best exporters of talent in Europe nonetheless. Besides, we've sent way better people than that Mans guy.
@@alisharosey7948 it's not political ! Should I remind that Albania, Serbia and Slovenia were very low in ESC 2018 odds, they qualified and Albania ended up 11th ! Everyone can win with a good song ! Portugal won in 2017, Poland won in JESC 2018...
@@trhrvs it is political. Nearly all of the countries vote for the countries closest to them or who they have strong political ties with. You'd be naive to think it's based on musical talent judging by the previous winners. Some of the best acts last year like from France came at the very bottom. Name me some Eurovision winners who have had success afterwards and gone on to tour the United Kingdom, Europe and America, other than Abba from 1970s who were the only real talent. I'll wait. Watching Eurovision in the UK is a big joke and considered a comedy to most of us. The music is terrible and cheesy and ridiculous and clearly not based on true talent but politics. We just listen to Graham Norton laughing at the whole pointlessness of it. The UK even voted for a really cheesy Europe-style act to represent us last year as an experiment (Surie) and she still came last and even got attacked on stage.
@@alisharosey7948 it's not our fault that UK is always bad in Eurovision since 2012(2014 and 2017 were good)... đđđđ
The UK preselection is now more entertaining than the actual Eurovision thanks to MĂ„ns and Mel. They're an absolutely fantastic double act each year. Hats off to MĂ„ns for his energetic reprise of these Eurovision classics and getting Cheryl, Jay, Mike and Katrina along was the icing on the cake.
We even picked a half decent entry this year! If the UK were to win the entire thing, I propose MĂ„ns and Mel present the 2020 Eurovision from London.
To be fair, most years the only entertainment derived from the Eurovision hosts is second-hand embarrassment.
Well this comment is rather awkward now that we know the result...
@@Zhellybelly yep. Also I always thought having Phillip and Holly host would be a barrel of laughs
Zhellybelly this is more proof that the U.K. could send the worlds best artist and theyâd come in the bottom 3. Like, the U.K. song last year was alright. Nothing special, nothing bad. And got fewer points that Germanyâs caterwauling... and then even had some points taken off us.
But that's the thing in Eurovision the worst thing you can be is bland, you can be terrible in a fun way and someone will love it but you can't be forgetable
The swedes and english just mix well, same kind of humor :) - greetings from sweden
Yes and don't forget the Aussies and Swedes have affection for each other đŠđșđžđȘ
