    We European are fully aware of how ridicolous the Eurovision is, that's exactly why we like it! Most of the songs are immediatly forgotten, is the madness of the exhibition that is remembered forever!

      I completely agree with you. I see it every year since I was a child, sometimes I don't even get to hear the songs, I only see the votes. It is the funniest part, because it is a summary of the politics of each country in the year. Greetings from Spain.

      @@donnielp3 well the show can be very cringe, but it can is also be very entertaining. Hosting the show can be a pain in the butt and is very expensive, and can prove beneficial for a countries overall econemie, the local residents suffer for it, although you could argue that this is small sacrifice

      I've never heard about this movie before, didn't know the origin of this joke, but I really enjoyed this moment of Iceland voting (after that of course I did the research :)).
      I love how Icelanders stay so humble and down-to-Earth, allowing themselves to be funny and wear sweaters when everybody else is wearing their best shiny clothes :D

      Realistically, it's because the US isn't in it. Ask a random Chinese or Brazilian or most other non-esc person and you'll get confusion, people don't watch things that don't effect them. Though eurovision is becoming more well known every year in the us. But I don't believe your criticism boils down to anything other than hating on America for the sake of it.

      When I learned how many real Eurovision competitors appeared in the "song-a-long" I totally got it! I was not completely unaware of Eurovision before the movie but it was likely the only Eurovision competitors I could have confidently named would have been ABBA... :D

      As a US Eurofan I go well beyond this, I appreciate the languages folky entries, the cross-culturalization and don’t forget the fans and their memes and their vent lives...and the whole reason ESC exists. Also be mindful of the unique National Finals (Melodifestivalen- Sweden, San Remo - Italy, Vidbir-Ukraine, etc). As these are unique onto themselves. Poland NF had their contestants compete on Beatles songs for one of the semifinals... and also listen to the classic entries like Monaco 1971 and the 1965 France Gall Luxembourg... this contest is more than even this

    What he said is perfectly put but he didn’t mention the way it’s presented: The awkward presenters speaking stilted English, telling goofy jokes; the tourist board intros to each singer visiting the host city that year; the predictable voting system in favour of ancient national alliances and against old foes, the flag waving in the boozy green room waiting for the results in French over a crackly telephone line from a former Eastern Bloc Capital....Pure Eurotrash! We love it.

      Nope, he is on point. Of course those performers think they look awesome, but some really don't. That is why worst dress award is given each year. And of course some scenes turn up totally bonkers. But sometime that is what wins the votes. Like that chicken women... ahhh I love ESC.

    Eurovision is an event which is best with friends. It takes 3 - 4 hours, you eat and drink and all have fun watching the weird performances. You discus who will win and enjoy beeing together.

    The thing about Eurovision is that us Europeans already know it is silly but as an act you want to stand out as much as possible and be memorable to the audience that is where all the crazy stuff comes in.
    You want people to say "hey I am voting for the one with the hamster wheel" or "I want to vote on that Ring girl doing the hammertime" and that is why we love it so much hehe ;)

      You're just used to seeing him when he has his hair done, is wearing makeup and a carefully selected wardrobe, and through a professional camera. That looks quite different from this: in a T-shirt, probably hot (that's probably why he's a bit red, seems sweaty too and it's the middle of summer), through a shitty webcam, and ruffled greying hair.

    Big Eurovision fan from US. Having 40-50 countries sending songs each year, there’s a big variety of genres with pop and ballad songs being the most common but genres like hard rock and punk have made appearances aswell. Countries sometimes send ”serious” songs that are musically of great quality and sometimes ”joke” songs that are meant to just entertain or actually send a political/social message. There is less traditional music being sent to Eurovision than like 20 years ago but it’s not completely finished. In a nutshell, you can expect pretty much anything

    I appreciate we Europeans have a totally different song contest that unites us in laughing about ourselves and our neighbors in a friendly manner. It allows us to be ridiculous if we want, have fun while doing it, make it heavy, make it light, just as we tell our kids to be, totally espontanous, I hope Eurovision never dies and continues to be something we all can laugh at and with each other. If it were not so bizarre and peculiar it would be just another international contest out of hundreds alike, what's the fun in that?!!! ¡Que viva Eurovisión! Y que gane España!!!!!

    For me as a german it is just crazy, that so many americans never heard about eurovision... This is a very big part of music culture in europe. Even australia is being a part of eurovision since a few years.

    After I moved to Ireland it took me a few years to get into it, but once I watched my first Eurovision I was completely in love. The spectacle, the camp, the talent and the drama of the scoring are just so much fun to get completely absorbed in!!

      This is rather late reply (lol been watching this year's entries so YT recommends me all Eurovision stuff)
      Past few years so many Americans have fell to it..it started before this movie, but feels like during pandemic it really escalated. The reaction youtubers has always some European whispering "pssst. React to this eurovision thing"
      It goes from "wtf I am watching. What is this madness" to "omg i cannot stop this, this is awesome " within week.
      I have personally converted one American.

    I'm from Brazil and the first time I ever heard of Eurovision was when I visited Sweden in 2016. It's interesting how something so big in Europe is almost unheard of in the rest of the world.

    I discovered Eurovision about 10 years ago and I had a similar reaction to it. My mother came to Europe to visit me and we watched it together. It was glorious and weird

    I liked the movie even if I don't particularly care for the contest. I liked that it wasn't a mockfest, what it very easily could've been. It was quite a good spirited movie, actually.

    I watched the "song along" segment of this movie over and over ... it was so amazing. I'm a smidge taken aback by the wood-paneled background, Will. Time for a makeover. One of the best things my hubby and I ever did was paint our wood-walled TV room.

    Eurovision was where (in the 70s) ABBA won it, with their outrageous costumes, but it showed how good they were - they went on to do lots of popular tracks etc.

    My favorite thing about Conan is that he doesn't fake laugh unlike some other host. Will Ferrell made the joke about getting the prop guy Omaha Steaks and nothing from Conan. Just moves on. I love how genuine he is.
    Then we have people like Fallon who laughs uncontrollably if you sneeze.

    I don’t think many Americans knew that there were many popular artistes who had some success in Eurovision.
    Cliff Richard’s song Congratulations was a Eurovision song, Julio Iglesias represented Spain one year, the song Eres Tu by Mocedades which hit #9 in the US in 1974 was a Eurovision song, Celine Dion actually won for Switzerland in 1988, and last but not least Katarina & the Waves of Walking on Sunshine fame also managed to win in 1997 for the UK.

Im English and my partner is Irish and we also lived in US for a while and watched Eurovision over many years and now with our 19 yr old son ( corny but fun!) . The sound track is beautiful and I loved Demi’s song , such an amazing voice! Double trouble

    Riverdance was originally a 7 minute fill in put on by RTÉ between the performances and the voting. No one really remembers who won that year, just Riverdance.

    Watched this movie with my whole family who I usually watch Eurovision with anyway, and it was genuinely a better replacement than actual Eurovision itself xD They captured the craziness of the competition so perfectly it’s uncanny

    From when Eurovision started 1956 until 1974 the artist were dressed in nice suits and eveninggowns. But 1974 Abba won the whole competition dressed in some kind of crazy outfits with their conductor dressed like Napoleon. After that the show changed from being kind of sophisticated to what it is today. A glam, fun, crazy show just for the amusement

    With luck this will give the Eurovision Song Contest more exposure. I'd LOVE to see a major network here pickup all three broadcasts. No more having to VPN to another country. No more having to put up with commentators I can't understand. Been watching the contest for about 7 years now and look forward to it every year. Was real sad when it was canceled this year. Really wanted to see Little Big preform.

      It’s amazing, isn’t it? And it gets better each year. Usually there are 1-2 songs I like but this year I liked 5-6 songs and most years I have a favourite contestants and they eventually release albums and grow even more as an artist. People think the UK doesn’t take it seriously but I think the UK takes it too serious and we keep sending songs that might do okay on the radio but far too bland for Eurovision. I knew we would come last with such a boring song and dull performance! Love Ukraine, France, Switzerland, Greece, Iceland!

    I miss the times when participants in the ESC were obligated to sing in their country's language. Nowadays most songs are in English.

      In 2017 Portugal won with a portuguese jazz-based ballad, and Italy won this year woth an italian glam rock song. I think times are changing

    Finland has always been a kind of laughing stock at Eurovision, always finishing last. Then, one year, a group from Rovaniemi far up north, came and totally dominated. Google Lordi and Hard Rock Hallelujah. They crushed the opposition and as hell froze over, Finland had finally won the Eurovision after years of ridicule. 😄🤘🤘🤘

      But the problem is you always come up with the exact same thing. That's like the donkey that keeps hitting his head against the same stone and keeps repeating and gets nosebleeds every time.
      I hope one day the spanish song will be special and we will vote for it.
      Like we did this year with switzerland (who are always awful but this year top 3)

    The next movie should be about The Game without boarders. "Jeux sans frontières". Aired in some european countries like mine, Portugal.
    It was like the Olympics but with ridiculous games. It was fun though, spent my childhood watching that crap.

    Saw the movie last night and it was such a great parody! Really enjoyed it. Yah yah Ding Dong, hilarious!!! Eurovision is a sort of never ending freaky circus show. Very entertaining because you never know what’s next. Did I mention we won last year? I didn’t? Well, we did after 40 years. And although everybody claims they hate the show it was kind of a national celebration.

    Man I know this is just the format of the show for the pandemic but I enjoy this MUCH more than the typical late night setting. Feels more real and organic and the jokes seem to land a lot more.
    This was hilarious to watch.
