In this episode, I walk you through a method to write a high scoring discursive essay.
A discursive essay presents an argument and then shows different opinions that support and reject the argument. In order to successfully structure your discursive essay, you must start with the introduction paragraph. In the introduction, provide a paraphrased background statement that is given to you in the assignment. Afterwards, expand on this background statement with more detail. In the second paragraph, present one of the two opinions on the arguments. Give the opinion as well as examples to support the opinion and a strong conclusion statement making clear what the opinion is. In the third paragraph, you will do the same thing as the second paragraph except present the opposing opinion. In the final paragraph, you will present your personal opinion on the subject. This is one instance in academic writing in which personal pronouns are okay. Also in your final paragraph, conclude the argument as a whole. This guide to structuring will help you write a coherent discursive essay.
