Improve your Cohesion and Coherence in IELTS Writing Task 2. Simple but powerful ideas you can incorporate today.
5 Easy Ways to Improve Cohesion in IELTS Writing Task 2
To improve cohesion, you should focus on four or five word collocations. Using these grammatically perfect constructions will make you sound more natural, more cohesive, and reduce the chances of making a mistake. Furthermore, learning a set structure where 50% of the words are the collocations, and then adapting it to any topic, will guarantee you a high quantity of points. However, it is important to avoid using the same collocations in the introduction and in your examples. Another way to improve the cohesion and coherency is repetition, i.e. repeating key nouns in your paragraph. Nevertheless, if you are aiming for a higher grade (Band 7), then you should use synonyms instead. The third tip that you can use to improve your essay’s flow is to give the reader directions through transition signals. Finally, use consistent pronouns. Show the examiner that you have a very wide vocabulary, give your essay an academic tone, stick to a single idea in each paragraph, and practice using the provided tips. This will increase your score for grammatical range, accuracy, cohesion, and coherence.

Hi Ben,
Thanks for the video. Its amazing and insightful. Can you please let me know what i must include in paragraph 1 and paragraph two when it is an Agree, Disagree essay and for the essay type to what extent d you agree?. Should we write both positives and negatives for both the essays or just stick to one side of our argument.
Hi Hariganesh! For the Agree or Disagree, generally, the idea according to IELTS examiner trainers is that you should be able to spot some validity of the opposing argument, even if it is just to say where the holes in its logic are. In other words, a higher TR score would analyse both sides. Usually, the task is phrased in such a way that you can find some logic to the opposing side. Hope that helps. All the best!!
IELTSPodcast.com thanks for the detailed answer
Hi Ben, can you take a look at my essay as well?
Can I have your email?
While some of this advice is helpful, these overly long transitions will often impede concision and cohesion, enveloping the message with unnecessary words.
