Ah, I see what you did there. 😂 I ALWAYS tell anyone I can find, who doesn’t know the show, “It is the best, most informative, well researched and most educational documentary series the BBC has ever made!” And then heavily imply they must be dunces if they haven’t even heard of it. So often, people will ask, “What? Better than Carl Sagan, or David Attenborough,” etc, etc. I take HUGE delight in encouraging them to buy the boxset if at all possible and, “Don’t read the stuff printed on the covers!” as that will spoil the surprises, and so on. I’ve only managed to get one person to go all in on that, but GOD was it worth it for the reaction! 😁

I believe it's the editing. The way the interviews are done, they can just add a humorous question or response w/o losing very much continuity.
For most of the show, she is following a script. But during the interviews, she actually has to react, and improvise. And she does it amazingly well.
@YellowMeadow Spirituelle Yes, these are real interviews. Interviewees were warned that this is more of a comedy and not a real documentary, but other than that, these are real interviews with real experts.
Diane's performance is wonderful but the writers must be given credit, too. AND the biting wit of producer Charlie Brooker and his partner - Annabel Jones.

As a former history teacher I can say this woman is spot on. Fantastic comedy, even if it means she has to do a lot of walking.

If you had ever taught high school history you'd be amazed at the boners students make on exams, in papers or in class. There are "histories of the world" consisting of nothing but hilarious yet honest mistakes made by students from grade school through university. Pure Cunk. My favourite was one student of mine who attributed the agricultural success of the ancient Egyptian civilization to "the annual floods which deposited lint on their fields". I found it funny as hell, but did not, obviously make fun of the student. The innocent ignorance of the character is what is spot on to me. Her take on a TV presenter being clueless about is a joke you obvoiusly don't get.
@jena.alexis Agreed. Sometimes the best teaching is done from an unexpected direction and with something that challenges someone to say, "Wait! What?" Learning happens when people ask questions.
It's both heartwarming and weird to see her smile and talk like a normal person. Really a testament to her brilliant acting.

I love that her questions to the experts are not just dumb, but often also capture the unique way small children ask stuff. The dumbest real adult is never going to ask "when they're doing the writing, how do they get the sounds into the ink so they'll come out later when you read them?" And that level of complete misunderstanding and curiosity forces the experts (and potentially the viewers) to back up and explain fundamental underpinnings you take totally for granted just to even start to get back to the topic.
My favorite is when she asked how they get time into the clocks. Pure gold.
"where is the value in a coin? is it hidden inside? If you cut it open can you find it?"

Children don't ask that dumb stuff. Children would laugh at you as silly, but they wouldn't really think it to be true. They're the questions kids may ask to be funny, but not out of curiosity.
At the end of the day, the only people i remember asking those questions were the jokers who never payed attention in class so eventually their dumbness went from satire to reality.
What we need are people who ask serious questions with a hint of humour. Our society is so dumbed down that we are at a checkmate with EXTINCTION and everyone is still acting the same.
But then sometimes her questions are actually super clever, like when she was asking about the stock exchange and about philosophy, these were unexpectedly genius questions haha

As an American, I truly feel like English humor is unmatched in its dryness and wit. I think it’s something we need more of in American media.

I'm from the North West of England where Diane Morgan is from, this is really our default humour. I've worked with quite a few Americans over here in the UK, it usually takes them a few days to adjust to the fact that this is how we mostly communicate.
Look up Peter Kay and you'll get the general vibe of what is a to me a comedic region of England. 😊👍
I agree, the odd thing is, so many Americans love British comics, comedy shows its a wonder why you haven't developed similar. Although I guess it's fair to say comedy in all forms generally represents their country.
Brits no matter who they are irreverent, dry, sarcastic, politically incorrect. And I also find that there are more female comics from the UK than anywhere else too...

I love that she expressed positive feelings towards exactly one thing (tripping over) in the entire interview, and hated everything else he brought up.
I love that she went into the audition as the opposite of what they were looking for and it turned out her unique character and touch made it 100 x better than the original idea. Same thing Mackenzie Crook did with the Gareth role. They wanted a big, angry blokey bloke but his twist MADE that character.

I love how she's talking to a Shakespearean actor and he starts to talk about Romeo and Juliet. She says something like, "Everyone loves a happy ending" and he just looks at her and explains that they both died in the end...she's dumbfounded, looks at her cameraman and says, "We'll have to put a Spoiler Alert here" or something. OMG, she's perfection!!!
Omg there are so many wonderful precious moments. And hats off to the experts as they do such a great job of playing along. I especially enjoyed the statue of David 😅

I haven't seen a ton of history documentaries but enough to appreciate the tropes of "I'll be shouting at helicopters." and "I'll be starting sentences in one location - and finishing them in another location".
I’ve spent enough time watching tv in England that I know she’s especially referring to British tv shows about history and stuff, not so much PBS type ones at all
@@M_SC American history shows are a lot, um, flasher I guess is the correct term. Maybe they're not all like that, but the editing is more frantic, and they'll throw in loud noises during cuts just to ensure you're still awake. Which is fair enough, cause as we now all know history is boring and we'd much rather watch somebody fall over. 😋
As a Brit I can tell you the tropes are spot on. US history docs tend to have lots more dramatic music, quick cuts, on-screen graphics and narrator voice overs - but here in the UK they really are focused around a well-informed expert host, on camera, walking around historic sites and enthsiastically pouring information at the viewer. As someone who enjoys history I find it fascinating but for most people it would seem incredibly dull. Diane's portrayal as Cunk is hilariously accurate.
@@JallenMeodia well, American history shows vary wildly from the PBS style M SC was talking about (which is usually kinda aping the BBC's style) to the History channel / Discovery channel / TLC type ones I think you're referring to.
If you watch long enough you'll see some bonkers/amazing reenactment costumes she'll be in for such a short amount of time. When she was in Elizabethan garb I almost choked on my food, SO DRY. But then again, my food was dry too. Hmmmm...

I haven't seen such a good comedy in years.
for me, she is definitely on the top list of actors/comediennes.
I don't think she does much playing though. I think she genuinely finds history boring, apart from weird stuff, like whether king Arthur Came A Lot. Which to be honest is probably the question that popped the most in people's mind, yet nobody bothered to ask out loud before her, nevertheless figure it out. Sure, she knows it's his name, but was he?

I watch this on my iPad next to my wife and pretend I'm watching an actual documentary. She hasn't noticed yet since she never cared to pay attention to documentaries anyway. I actually love Diane Morgan in her role as Cunk. I have had a life-long interest in history and find her portrayal of that character an absolute scream!
The thing is with this show that it starts off hilariously silly and then by the end she ends up posing actually quite deep questions without becoming 'boring'. And the interviews had me in stitches 😂 those poor experts 😂
I LOVE HER!! I work in academic publishing, so a lot of the people she's interviewing I know professionally--they're legit at the top of their game, and are such good sports!

And her medieval story telling about what might have gone on the castle was an absolutely brilliant and engaging peek into the child’s imaginative world.

I never thought I would see Diane Morgan on American TV because she's just so bloody British and her comedy is very British too - glad to see her get international recognition!
Some of us Americans have been watching her on youtube for awhile now. We don't really DO the dry British style of humor here too much, but many of us do love to receive it!
This is why I struggle to find most American comedy funny. Its too broad and not self deprecating enough. There are of course notable exceptions
@@DistantCousin yep. Conan O'Brien is super self-deprecating, but that's usually attributed to his Irish Catholic upbringing, for instance. Plain ol' vanilla American humor just doesn't tend to be that way.
To be honest dry, satirical humor with a bit of dark humor thrown here and there makes me appreciate British culture. Favorite line by Diane Morgan is, "If it wasn't for the suffrage movement, I wouldn't be here. I would have been in the kitchen-- where I belong..."
During the pandemic I also found a good comedy show called "Taskmasters" and got to say it cured my depression.

It was so deadpan hilarious, I binge-watched the whole thing in one sitting. I'd love to see an entire series on the history of the world, so I'm still waiting. And sitting.

I came across her show and binge watched the whole thing in one night. I love a good “mockumentary” and boy, did this deliver. Her deadpan delivery is the absolute best. I just wish there were more episodes!
The Brits are known for making short series and only a few of them, even if the show is massively successful. It's crazy to the rest of the Western world, that South Park and The Simpsons are still running. That's considered insane overkill. The Brits are too much the opposite of that though.

She's a credit to her race...We Canucks are aware of many masters of the arts from Great Britain, that Yanks have not seen nor heard...I'm in my 70s and lived in Canada my whole life. I'm so grateful for Dame Margaret Rutherford, Shakespeare, the Beatles, etc...We get the British Culture (I live near Victoria, British Columbia) more often and more in depth than those poor self centred Yanks...I used to watch 3hrs of Coronation Street every Sunday morning for a coupla years...Oh yeah, I love Philomena Cunk.

Another really accessible form of British humor in my opinion is Taskmaster. Highly recommend it if you're looking for more exposure to British comedy!

Seeing her so animated gives me cognitive dissonance 😂 I didn't know she had to audition. I thought she created the show, it's just such a perfect fit.
She auditioned to play Philomena Cunk, who was a character within Charlie Brooker’s Screen Wipe series (including all the other “wipes”, which I’m really missing atm). That was probably about 9-10 years ago now??
Then Charlie and Diane have taken that character and given her her own shows, with the “Cunk on….” series.
So, no she didn’t have to audition for Cunk on Earth as it was written for her to play, but she did have to audition to play Philomena originally.

@@Nefariousbig Must be a wonderful teacher. I know these experts do a lot of writing and research, and plenty of people at that level teach as a way to maintain their research, if that makes sense, but sometimes you see someone who is able to share their knowledge so well. I admire that.

She's done well to make it in America, I can remember when she was still a segment in Charlie Brooker's yearly wipe, being on after life with Ricky Gervais also on Netflix has no doubt helped her profile too.
She is one of the funniest women in showbiz. Has her own distinct style and all her work is gold.

I describe this show as “as if my 8 year old is interviewing people and finding out about the world” it’s so refreshing and often spot on. Her Shakespeare and also on Charity are amazing (on CZcams I think)

I love Diane Morgan telling the story of appearing on the brilliant "Inside No.9" where there on a pedalo boat for the whole episode. She was worried about pissing herself while stuck on it all day filming, so ordered Adult nappies from Amazon. As many have done before, she got her quantities wrong and now has a stockpile of 500 adult nappies in her Garage 🙂

Her lampooning of history documentaries is perfect. The straight face monologue bits are the best. And then the Pump Up the Jam interjection slammed into the middle of something.

OTOH, though, we Yanks say math instead of maths yet wouldn't say mathematic if using the full word. The inconsistency of that bugs me.

I've seen earth, Britain, Shakespeare, Christmas so far. I found the one-offs a bit less interesting than the broader history ones but they were all easily worth watching.

She was good in year-end reviews of Netflix in 2020 and 2021, commenting as a clueless average jane. I don't know why Netflix didn't do one for 2022.

I've watched the first 4 episodes of Cunk on Earth. I've never laughed harder in my life at a TV show. I also love Seth Meyers. I'm so glad I found her on this show. Also, I watch Seth every night.
She's interviewed some of my colleagues and professors for the show, and they absolutely love it too.

I feel that it needs to be put out there. The cunk character was initially introduced on channel 4 in the UK during Charlie Brooker’s (of Netflix, black mirrors fame) screen wipe. He wrote the show and obviously shaped the character of cunk to fit in with the topic of his show, which was initially a dissemination of TV shows and news coverage.
And her male counterpart on that, Barry Shitpeas, was actually the director.
Not once was jam pumped during this interview, yet it still managed to be entertaining and informative.

One of my favorite bits was her calling the Bayeux Tapestry the "Baywatch Tapestry." And my son and I still call JFK "John Effing Kennedy."
As eastern person I think I learned some good information from her in an entertaining way❤ it's good to add humor in education! And I also think she was promoting the critical thinking in a fun way❤
Some of her best lines start with “my mate Paul…” 😂
