- Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Would you believe me if I told you that one grumpy radio DJ from Chicago changed the face of the music industry as we know it? And that he did this with exploding records and frisbees of death? Well, let me explain…because that is all true. In today’s episode, we talk about Disco Demolition Night. And how it altered the path of not only Disco Music but all pop music as we know it today.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

I'm your host -- Bailey Sarian - Zábava
Hi from Chicago! Vince Lawrence is actually my dad!! You wouldn’t believe how shocked I was to see my two favorite people on the same screen!! I can confirm, he loved this episode and said it is very accurate. You will be happy to know the records that were saved from the demolition were used to create house music!! A real circle of life moment ❤❤ thank you Bailey for showcasing my dad and telling THE REAL story! ❤❤❤❤
How awesome!!!!
"I'm tired..."
Girl, I felt that.
That cracked me up!
@@apt5044 a)
the “im tired” and immediate position change, i’ve never related so hard 😂❤
Bailey can do ANYTHING and we'd still accept it and love her! ❤
Gives a whole new meaning to Panic! At the Disco 😂😂
I went to discos from 1975-79 with my Farrah hair, platform heels and low cut polyester dresses. I was there 5-6 nights a week. It was a wonderful time where you could shed your daily work or school identity and dress up, wear makeup and lose yourself in a great music beat. The dance steps were fun and line dances were common.
I was a disco queen, enjoyed the dancing, the funny fruity drinks, the escape from reality. The main thing disco meant to everyone was a fun happy time away from your real boring day life.
Side note, not one person did that John Travolta hand pointed in the air move. Not Ever. Until I saw Saturday Night Fever, I'd never seen that move on a real dancefloor.
It also signaled the END of the disco Era and the beginning of punk and nu-wave.
I thought that protest in the stadium burning music was one of the most hateful acts I'd ever witnessed.
You are so lucky to have experienced that era. Thanks for sharing your memories, so cool
That sounds incredible!
Sounds amazing!
Thanks for sharing! Anytime talk turns to previous decades I always say I'd love to go back to the 70's. Sounds like a blast.
I'm glad for you!
The amount of knowledge I have received from watching this podcast is actually absurd. I feel so educated 😩
Feels
Me too,,, I hated history! But with Bailey I Love History
Disco will always have the last laugh... As first responders, the song that we perform CPR to is "Stayin' Alive"!!!
Disco Saves Lives!!!
you should do a dark history on funerals/funeral homes! randomly out of curiosity i googled if funeral homes have ever given fake ashes to families and done something else with the bodies and there’s tons of stories! i’ve obviously been watching you forever to just get these questions 😂 but it was super intriguing!
I second this
Thursdays are beautiful. And not only because it's my Friday in the work week but because Bailey is here being the history teacher we didn't ask for, but we all need!!
Thank you for watching!
Thursdays were always my favorite day because It was the day to make final plans for Friday. Lol and now because of DH
Can we all just appreciate how ICONIC Bailey is ✨✨❤❤
I concur!
Yes. Absolutely yes to your question at the 10:47 mark
So iconic!!!
Yaaas 😎
Agreed

My daughter: runs in with snacks yelling AUNTY BAILEY AND THE HOT JUICY HISTORY GOSS 😂

Love this 😂❤
That is raising kids right!!!
ah all i'm hearing is the next generation is gonna be just fine
I'm your 100th like 😅
My son fell asleep watching this video...
I’m so glad she mentioned Vince Lawrence. Him and the useable records went on to help start house music.
According to my ecclectic spotify playlist....Disco will NEVER die! No matter how much it keeps pleading with me to put it out of it's misery. NEVER!
My parents (an interracial couple) used to always talk about their nights in the clubs, and how they’d dance the night away to disco and draw a crowd. When I was growing up in the 80s, my parents would throw disco parties in the basement. I’d hear The Bee Gees, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Donna Summer, and more. It was really cool, actually. Of course, I was drawn to more 80’s music. Specifically Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, and Blondie (though Blondie started in the 70’s).
This is a VERY interesting Dark History. Thanks so much for sharing in your usual, AMAZING style. ❤️❤️❤️
I’m 50 years old, we have to be close in age because my Mom loved 70’s music too. Lol I’m an 80’s music girl myself.
Your parents sound amazing and fun!
Joan Jett, Pat Benatar and Blondie were not disco. Or even close. I used to slam dance in the late '70's and '80's. That was really the only thing to do if you had any sensibility.
@@lynnefromthelake She never said THEY were disco. 🙄
@@lynnefromthelake Seems like sensibility has lost you since because who ever said they were disco?
Bailey really created her OWN lane on CZcams. Nobody does it like her ❤
Yessss absolutely!, I adore her ❤
You're the Elvira of the 2020's who brings knowledge. 💜

I was a young teen in the 70's, I loved Disco then and I still do today. I always knew some people hated Disco but I never knew any of this. Guess I was too young.
I was born in 73’, and remember my dad playing disco in his music band. I’ll never understand why young children were allowed in bars and nightclubs back then🤣😱!😮
@@ghiajohnson1547 My dad used to take me to bars on the regular when I was a kid. He'd order me a plate of french fries and a Coke and I'd sit at the bar with the bar tenders and would talk their ears off. Dad would have his few beers and socialize for a wee bit and then we'd go home. In my teens my dad still took me to bars, would order me a Coke and whatever I wanted off the menu. I graduated to sitting at the table while he and his friends had a few beers and hung out or watch the hockey game if it was on a Saturday night. It was so normal for me that in my early adult years when pubs and bars didn't allow anyone under the drinking age (19 in Canada) into them I was rather surprised and it took me a while to get my head wrapped around that.
I was team rock and roll but I never knew any of this either.
I learned so much from this episode and I’m a chicago girl who lived through it. I used to listen to both stations, so heard Steve complaining about disco all the time. Then it was over to the WDAI to listen to the music. I laughed when he planned Disco Demolition, but shortly after the event my clubs closed and disco was dead. A real fun time to live.
Beyonce, Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, Bruno Mars and Doja Cat are the artists I can think of at the top of my head that have released disco songs recently. I wish some current artists would make a full Disco album to complete that Disco revival we need.
Yeah future nostalgia is one of favourite recent albums for this reason. I also loved Bruno Mars disco songs. I want more 😢 Kylie Minogue did a great disco song or two recently also! Still stunning
Who else clicks like before it starts! Love this beauty! ❤❤❤❤
🥰🙋🏾♀️🥰
Always because I know I will love it!
Bailey is the only reason I have to be happy every Monday and Thursday. Thanks for being here for us Bailey!
I'm with you on that.
Love you Bailey. I lived through the 70s and never heard this story. However I remember the disco music. Many of my friends did not like it but I found it fun. The 70s was so depressing. You might check into the totally depressing movies like Saturday Night Fever, Midnight Cowboy and others. People in the 70s had no escape. Economy was bad, Vietnam was depressing with so many friends being killed, or I particularly remember sitting in lines for gas. If you ever have any questions about the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s, don’t hesitate to con tact me. Love you Bailey, you remind me of my granddaughter.
The "don't let her laugh at your disability Joan" took me right tf out 🤣🤣🤣 I had to watch it again. Bailey you're hilarious ❤🤣
Hello Bailey. Love the free education I get with some humor thrown in. Best class I’ve ever attended.
Please do a dark history video on the Romanovs. It's a very sad but interesting story. Love you ❤
WAIT! those russians that lived in Siberia? that were completely cut off from all civilization?
I was one of those 60k. It was incredible. Thrilling, frightening, dangerous. Probably the most dangerous thing I’ve ever done. Possibly the reason I don’t like crowds to this day.
❤ you have been getting me through my surgery, and recovery thank you so much ❤❤❤
Get well soon 😊
As a first year Gen X, I can tell you disco was fun to dance to. I know a few simple moves because friends and I got together and learned them. We weren't old enough to go to the clubs but we practiced at our homes to Olivia Newton John, Bee Gees, Donna Summer, and others. I vaguely remember this happening.
Hey there 1st year gen x'er from a last year gen x'er😊
P
i wish i could've lived the disco era 😩
@@patriciuhhh7767 No you don't. It was Baaaaaaaaaddddddd. Forced to learn disco in gym class, etc.
3rd year Gen X'er here & yep, Disco was a lot of fun to dance to, roller skating to it was also a blast! Learning some moves in gym class was about the only thing I liked about gym. Oh, the wave of nostalgia!
Let us appreciate how GOLDEN Bailey looks today!! Love the eye shadow too 🤩
It's 6 o'clock in Germany and I've already learned some history 😅. I propose Bailey get a show on TV so she can teach us everything 😌
Why TV when we have it free on CZcams
Amazed by the fact that after causing all that, he was just told to go home. They didn’t even sued him for the property damage. Or the ppl who got hurt.
Saturday Night Fever is absolutely worth watching however your instincts are spot on. His character is a creep and it is a very dark movie for the time. John plays the character very well ( fun fact his mom plays the woman in the paint store) great music and definitely worth watching.
BAILEY YOU SHOULD DO A DARK HISTORY SERIES FROM ALL 50 STATES! STARTING WITH MAINE LOL
I love Maine!
I grew up the suburbs of Chicago and was 16 in 1979 when this happened! I also used to listen to the LOOP as well as Steve Dahl. It’s cool that Bailey did a Dark History about something I lived through
Moral of the story " Stop spreading hate!!!" Ty Bailey
Yay I was just looking for something to watch!

I hope you never stop making videos Bailey WE LOVE YOU
these are the same fears with 1950's rock and roll, 1960's beatle (esqu) music, hippie's. every decade the same fears come out with a different target. it's fear of social changes.
There’s suggestions that the hippies were created by the CIA to make the academic peace movement seem ridiculous while simultaneously acting as controlled opposition, look up Laurel Canyon and the strange things that happened there.
Bailey- "If you don't like something, maybe mind your business and get back to your crafting!"
Me- Laughing out loud as I continue crocheting a blanket for my grown daughter!" I was a teenager in the 70s and loved skating with disco playing LOUDLY!
I love your channel and thank you for this topic. I actually learned a couple of things even though I lived through the era. 👍❤️
😂😂😂 Same. As I junk journal in my handmade book hahaha
I was a kid in the 70s. I was born 1970 lol..
I never miss her new videos, I love listening to her stories.

Yup... Sitting here cross stitching 😅
Best part of this video I was not expecting was Joan wearing sunglasses … 🤣 I was weak!
Hey girl, im glad you say Hi friends cuz yes I really do feel like we're friends lol Thanks for coming through for us. 💜🖤🌌🔮♠️
I went to a disco party and my area and I felt so safe. I live outside of Baltimore city and usually when going out you’re trying to guard your drinks and watch out for predators. That night was amazing because I went with a group of girls and the atmosphere was so positive and non threatening. I would definitely recommend finding a local disco night near you!
The disco era was so much fun! The clothes! The music! That was where it was at!
Revenge was had: Chicago became the birthplace of House music; basically electronic Disco.
I graduated high school in 1973 and loved disco, The Bee Gees, Alice Cooper, Todd Rundgren, Bread, Queen, Engelbert Humperdinck, along with opera and classical music. Enjoying several different types of music and expanding knowledge was what disco meant to me. Sadly in my small town I was not accepted because I was "weird". Even my 3 older siblings didn't want to be associated with me. Sadly, I tried to fit into the very small mindset of being the normal that the majority of the people I was around promoted. Ended up having a major emotional breakdown trying to be something I definitely was not. It took several years to stop being afraid of being ridiculed and knowing that being "weird" was so much better than being "normal". One older sister has finally accepted me the other two have disowned me. Life is so much better without them or living in that small town! So, that was what I learned from the disco era!
I LOVE THE SMALLER STORIES, we can read about higher profile cases everywhere else. Your stories are special because they're new to me and I watch them multiple times BECAUSE I haven't heard about it a bajillion times already
You should do a dark history on the Chippendales!!
I was born 1973 so Disco was my baby dance music!! My mom loved to dance !! She was a Disco Queen!! ❤ And I was her little dance partner ❤( I remember she really liked John Travolta too 🤣🤣)
I'll always ta have place in my heart for disco !!
Thank you for another wonderful episode Bailey 💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝
Definitely felt attacked when she said “Like those K-pop Stan’s.” 😭
(I’m not one of them but she’s right some Stan’s do take it way to far.)
I feel you, I used to date one. I love kpop but she took it too far. Called claiming to be married to some of the idols a joke. To me it wasn't. 💀
Same 😂 I love kpop but I'm definitely not an insane stan. I feel like it's not OK to say you like kpop because of those psychos!
I went to disco clubs dancing with my high platformed shoes and disco dresses. We did this every weekend. I met my husband at a disco club, and we are married for 43 years. It was a fun time, and I miss the clothes, I miss dancing the night away. I was so thin back then. 😂 my older brothers on the other hand hated disco. I won’t tell you what they called it. We had our arguments. Thanks for the memories Bailey ❤
I've started off watching you on Facebook and I finally realized who you remind me of, you give off an Elvira vibe and I love it❤
I was waiting for Studio 54 to come into the story. Mind you I think that's a whole video of it's own.
Agreed.
Disco was the funniest time of my life! I was a rocker but I loved dancing to Disco!! Some people just never grew up!
I remember my parents going out every Friday night to disco clubs when I was 10. The never missed a chance to go disco dancing !! I love the music and style from that time!
I got my pants pulled down while crowd surfing at 3OH!3 at warped tour 😂 I’m so glad I have that in common with Bailey
I love that you’re covering this! It’s literally about racists not like seeing black people be successful in music disco is literally the reason why we have hiphop and rap! Hiphop is the blend of jazz, disco, and r&b
Just in time for doing my makeup and cleaning my wreck of a house! You keep me motivated with these horrific teachings of history. ❤️
I vote we resurrect the “robes” era of Dark History. They were so glamorous. It’s a perfect juxtaposition with the darkness of the topics being discussed.
I love disco! I’m 56 and remember watching my parents practice disco dancing. I I remember my dad wearing silk shirts, leisure pants (wide bottom ) and men’s high heal shoes. Oh and a skinny belt.
I'm an 80s kid who grew up listening to a lot of disco because of my parents. They were in their teens then and the music reminded them of falling in love and getting married. I loved the revival of disco in the early 2000s. Thanks for always covering interesting topics!
Talking about throwing records and possibly decapitating someone - reminded me of that scene in Shaun of the Dead 😭
Love disco music and dancing, it's fun and happy. No, Saturday Night Fever is definitely not worth watching.
„Disco became a touchy subject that no one wanted to touch“ 😂😂😂😂😂😂 i dont know why but it cracked me uuuuuupp😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I can tell you from firsthand experience I LIVED for Soul Train! I wanted so badly to be a Soul Train Dancer. Pitiful Whitegirl Dreams 😂
I would sit through Bandstand, but the fun began with Soul Train.

Soul Train was amazing.

I grew up in the 70s, I absolutely love disco AND classic rock and metal. 70s disco fashion was cool af! I loved when platforms and bell bottoms came back in style in the 90s!
I just discovered disco a few years ago as a Gen Zer, so disco is coming back! Donna Summer is still such a vibe 😫
This is probably one of my favorite dark histories because, for me, it highlights that the hyper-politicized fear driven hate that as a young person has felt new isn't new at all. It really gave me the same vibes & energy as people not knowing anything about lgbt, drag, etc, but still hating on it, driven by fear. I had genuinely not heard of any of this before, and it really helps give context to a lot of things. I don't remember why it came up, but it also reminds me of rap being associated with black and impoverished music artists and the blind hate that's associated with that. Blind hate and fear mongering are genuinely some of the biggest destructive forces in our world.
It's so important to remember not to identify with what you hate but with what you love.
Thank you so much for this Bailey 💗
It's funny that Bailey brought up her dress code changes on Dark History... she did this right as I was noticing how much I loved the print on her blouse. I was also really like the business casual cut on the shoulders. The contrast of the two shades of black between the shirt and her hair also really brings out the clearness of her eyes.
Born in 71 so proud to be a 70s baby. They definitely don't make music like they used to in the 70s. Ty bailey for another great video.
I like the silky pjs. Makes it feel like we are gabbing 🙊🤣

I GRADUATED HIGHSCHOOL IN 79 AND I SO REMEMBER DISCO, ALL THROUGH PART OF THE SEVENTIES AND EIGHTIES, I NEVER REALLY LIKED IT, LOVE YOU BAILEY, YOU ARE AMAZING AND SO BEAUTIFUL
Not just because you told me to, but for serious, I love your hair and makeup in this video! And the shirt! You’re so cute!
So wait.. did Steve invent scratching? I mean, he "lit-er-ally" scratched a record and added extra sounds. He had it in him the whole time and never knew 🤣

I watched Saturday night fever as a younger person and I liked it because it seemed so naughty. But I tried to re watch it a couple weeks ago and as a now 34 year old it was not the same. He was a creep for sure.
I remember how excited my friends were about it when it came out. I thought it was ok. I tried to watch it again a couple of weeks ago. At 56, I found it to be unwatchable.
It was the car scene for me. Stopped watching it and yep creepy.
