- Hi friends, happy Thursday!

Idk what’s different about Bailey, she ALWAYS looks gorgeous, but she looks absolutely STUNNING in this video. Maybe it’s her hair being different? Idk but I’m loving it.
Agreed! I think the different part in her hair. Along with her hairstyle and her makeup really brings attention to her stunning features😍
Seriously. Agree, so beautiful 🥰
Her hair and makeup is different then usual
I think she's had some work done... eyebrow shape is different & jawline is more defined. She is very beautiful anyway - but yah.
I think the change of scenery and seeing her enrobed and in repose, lounging is giving a whole difference vibe than (without detracting from) the MM&M episodes on her channel. I love it!
I like the fact that she doesn't edit out all of her own goofs. She's so fun.
I feel like that's what makes her so completely and inarguably relatable.
You guys know it's not just her anymore right? She has a whole company and team she works for now. Especially with these dark history eps. Haha para social relationships are crazy
@@user-bh2fz5sf5e what do u mean? Ppl help edit the videos? Well duh...🙄 that's not new, or unique. I don't get your point...
@@KimDrewTheLine I mean she works for a podcast company.. so it's not her deciding what cute little relatable things like "goofs" get left in the video. It's a conglomerate. She's great but let's not think she's the same Bailey filming and editing herself all alone in her room anymore.
@@user-bh2fz5sf5e oh okay, I'm sorry, my original comment was rude, that was uncalled for...Thank you for the info ♡
I did notice the credits at the end, I had written this comment before finishing the video, which one should never do! Lol.
Bailey, I'm so pleased you correctly credited Buddy Bolden as the "father" of jazz. I was friends with Don Marquis, who wrote the seminal book on Bolden, during his writing of the first edition, in the mid to late 70s. I even have a signed and dedicated copy of it. Your research is right on!!!
I'm a jazz musician/singer... studied at Howard University and I must say Bailey... THIS WAS EXCELLENT!!!
I'm a tour guide in New orleans, and I never hear anyone outside of my industry talk about Buddy! Thank you so much for covering him, and bringing light to his name. He is now buried in a local underground cemetery, where people pass by daily, completely unaware of what he did for music.
That's so sad. Is there a plaque near his grave?
As someone who's studying Jazz as my major, its so important to know about its true history and acknowledge its impact on music and culture today
Love that you're studying Jazz. I would say "Rock On" but ya know.....! LOL
Billie deserved better, the way Black women have been attacked and unprotected throughout history is horrendous
I'm not sure if we are really safe today from ridicule. Hopefully history doesn't repeat itself but I'm not sure you know.
We aren’t, racism still exists today.
@@BlackMagicQueen25 u know the barbs won’t let that happen

Thank you for acknowledging Buddy Bolden. So many people don’t even murmur his name in regards to Jazz. New Orleans is my soulmate. Thank you Bailey 💜

She knows...
Yeah she’s definitely mentioned Kellogg in a previous episode
I feel like the world learned about the trauma of Billie Holiday when her movie came out on Hulu. It’s aptly named “The United States vs Billie Holiday”…. Strange Fruit is one of the most prolific pieces of music to ever exist, and I feel like the civil rights movement would’ve suffered if Billie didn’t speak out in the best way she could.
I love how she has found the style she wants with this. The couch and the robes and glam AHHH😍

Really right rthat’s I love you so right rreally really
I like it too. It's weird that despite us giving her so much support in the comments for her new approach, it's not being reflected in the views. :-( I'm not saying the change is the reason for it but it still surprises me.
@@Himaryous the views? Bailey get 1M in almost every one of her videos lol
@@sharinettegonzalez23 I was hoping the views would go up after the change of format to be closer to the view she gets on MMM.
They ruined Billie Holiday and definitely tried to do the same to Eartha Kitt who literally just spoke out against the war while invited to the White House (apparently, her remake made the First Lady cry 🙄). Josephine had to move to Paris to perform! It’s almost as if they hated Black women who were outspoken or strong, fearless.
Not almost! They did!
Sherri K you know what? You are right because her career was never the same smh.
So... nothing's changed then?! Got it
I watched a vid with Eartha Kitts daughter speaking of their lives together. Very interesting.
Sarah Kekana not really. I mean…some things changed but a lot has remained the same, just in more insidious ways.
Going back further, Jazz music began by slaves in fields with field hollers. Which was a way for them to communicate. I took a Jazz history class in college and it was amazing!
That was really THE BLUES
Not Jazz
@@samthunders3611 umm. No. That was jazz too. Blues is the roots of both

I took a music history class in college, and MAN, that class gave me a new perspective on this country's (America) racist, unjust, unlawful past. Yikes man. Yikes.
For real pop culture tells an incredible story. Just looking at popular songs of the era you're examining and digging around them even a little bit gives a pretty accurate snapshot of the social political and economic climate of the times. You see it over and over in all kinds of art, but I think music especially has such power over our history.
@@katiemechenbier4172 I think you nailed the historical significance that music plays in American History. It's not just Jazz, per se. Look at Ragtime, Blues and even Rock and Roll. One of my favorite examples of music and morality crashing headlong is Jerry Lee Lewis. I absolutely love him and he could have been Huge (capital H); he married his underage cousin (arguably the dumbest move ever in the history of music) and he was shut down. Talent or no, he busted his career.
Strange Fruit is one of the most emotional songs I ever felt. As a native of Louisiana I truly appreciate this video 💕 oh and your beautiful today! Happy Holidays Friend’!🙂

When there are people that are obsessed with bringing down a certain race, you really see the nature of the devil come to the surface. Thank you for this story. I love jazz and Billie. There is a movie about what you talked with Billie, you should check it out.
The United States VS. Billie Holiday
Yt people get upset when they're not the center of something awesome. Just a common theme I've noticed.
Jup
Still happens to this day
Til this day!!!!!
I’ve noticed that too. When people started saying black lives matter they got upset that they weren’t the center of attention anymore and tried with their all lives matter bs. I’m calling it bs because they don’t actually practice caring about all lives.

“He was SUCH a surprise guest that even Fats didn’t know what was going on.”

My grandpa had an addiction to alcohol. And had to end up in rehab. He listened to jazz while coping with his withdrawals and after he became sober. He was addicted to Jazz music. And Billy Holiday. I have all of his music that he left behind after he died a few years ago. I once in awhile listen to it, to think of him.
There's a speakeasy in Floyd, VA. It's called Lush and is 20's themed. It's a lot of fun, just expensive lol.
Bailey, you DEFINITELY should do an episode on prohibition. The reason why alcohol was being prohibited is definitely Dark History material!
and the fact that they literally poisoned industrial alcohol to be sure people didnt drink it and it killed a Lot of people
I've been there a few times, cool little place!
@@olivesloan I agree! I work in floyd, but I haven't been to Lush in months lol
There are plenty of speakeasy themed bars... But without prohibition they can't really be a speakeasy
Great job, Bailey. Everyone who hasn’t heard strange fruit, needs to listen to it. Powerful song. 💛💛💛💛
Gloomy Sunday is a close 2nd
I legit paused this video to research that song.
Them There Eyes is a sentimental fave of mine. Not to mention Gimme a Pigfoot.....fun, fun song.
I heard it years ago in my high school art class she's right it's a powerful and I'm glad billy made it
Billie holiday is an icon! I have always loved her after discovering strange fruits at about 13 years old at school. Her voice is hypnotic and I'm so glad to hear her story told here. We never learned this much at school. We were played the song and had to find the rest out ourselves.
Thank you for going into detail about Billie Holiday - her story is indicative of the problems of the time and not talked about enough. RIP Billie ❤
Bailey’s makeup looks so natural in this one. It brings out her natural beauty, and I’m living for it
I like all genres of music, but I definitely didn't know there was a dark history behind jazz. I'm ready to learn.
Any history involving black people is a dark history lol no pun intended fr I'm serious
@@ssarait1469 Unfortunately that is so true and still true today.
Thank you so much Bailey for acknowledging that jazz came from Black culture, and that we were the ones who started it, and it's Rich cultural background! I love how you have always stood up, in allyship and been honest about things that have happened with African americans. Much respect to you! ❤️❤️
So I’d love to hear you do a dark history on “ passing” I was def 35 years old when I learned about this. Where some members of the black community would pass as white to live their lives and go to school and work . I saw a movie called passing on Netflix . I’ve never heard anyone talk about it before .
Can we all take a moment to appreciate Bailey’s badass collection of robes? 🖤
It wasn't about Billie. It was about her performing Strange Fruit. That's it. That's all. The song made America look bad on a worldwide stage, and the Initial Clans (FBN, FBI, CIA, etc.) couldn't have that. Had she agreed to stop singing it, they would've left her alone and told her as much! She refused, and we know how it ended. It's (the reason behind her harrassment and arrests by the federal government) been told in several books and movies about her life. Another great installment of Dark History, Bailey! Thanks for telling the truth about American history because it's been so whitewashed that the truth's almost completely left out of what's taught nowadays. Happy Holidays to you and yours! 🎄🎄🎄🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Facts
You really believe they would have left her alone if she stopped singing that song??? Not at all.
@@meganbarton1187 will you please elaborate?
Thank you for the note, it makes me very happy to hear.
Even if Billie was to quit and flee into obscurity, Asslinger would've dedicated his soul to destroying Ms. Holiday. America hates young successful non-whites, especially if it's a woman.
The Tuskegee experiment would be a topic worth discussing, also.
Imagine being kidnapped and being terrified for your life but when you get there, you realize you’re just performing and wonder why they didn’t just ask 😂 but at least he got paid🤣
Strange fruit by Billie Holiday is a morbid and magical song.

I am getting so angry for Billie holiday I paused this episode to listen to just music and I loved it. Especially “I’ll be Seeing You” it’s calming and melodic and relaxing. Billie deserved so much better.
I listen to that song at least once a week. Played it at my parents funeral and plan to have it played at mine as well. (Plus “Let it Be” by the Beatles. Just cause that one’s also perfect.)

you should do an episode on the dark history behind “banana republic” and the eery similarities between it and how the US acquired Hawaii
Billie was the f'in bomb. Period. JFK was an addict among others of that era. And musicians have been scapegoats since the dawn of time. Music has saved my life. Many times over. It makes me so sad, and probably makes Saint sad too, that Billie had to die the way she did. Though she gave birth (in a sense) to so many incredible female musicians. One of my favorites (of oh so many) is Etta James. If you don't know her music, check it out. One of the things about these women following Billie is, they also left this world without fanfare. Such a travesty. So always remember to support (tip, buy merch, etc.) the live performers you admire. Some of the greats of music have died penniless and could not even afford burial. I have known more than one. Music is the long line to the soul.
My father was a jazz musician in the 1940s thru 70s. He died young... I didn't get nearly as many stories out of him as I'd have liked!
@@Rox1SMF What a shame that your dad died young, I'm sorry. And that you didn't get all the stories that I'm sure he had. How exciting to me to have been embroiled in all that energy and ferocity of the clubs. Jazz begat blues, blues begat rock and roll; after that, it was all over but the cryin'! I raised a bluesman, who would play his harp in his carseat starting about the age of 2. He toured Europe a couple of times in his teens; came home and announced he was going into the Coast Guard. I told him he would be the most popular guy on the ship. LOL!
Doesn't Etta sing "At Last"?
Sam Cooke, Eartha Kitt, mlk Jr,........
Diamanda Galás is a Billie Holiday fan! She got influenced by her jazz songs.

I truly didn't know this about jazz or Billie Holliday. Thank you bailey
I was fortunate enough in my undergrad to have an awesome music history professor. We did a whole unit on Jazz music (which normally would be lumped in with the rest of early 20th century experimental music). I remember learning about (and listening to) "Strange Fruit." The entire class was SILENT. She then told us that our homework was to find cultural parallels between when that piece was composed/performed and modern day. The sad truth is, when it comes down to it, we as a nation have not changed at all. All that to say that my professor then challenged us music majors to make the world better. She taught us that historically, musicians and artists have a lot more sway over society than we give ourselves credit for. We can make a difference. Thank you, Bailey, for sharing this particular dark history.
Strange Fruit is one of the most beautiful yet saddest songs ever written. It makes me cry everytime I listen to it.

Music is one of those few UNIVERSAL languages which is why jazz took everyone by storm. They literally didn't know what to do when people of all colors and types were understanding each other, bonding through music, and supporting one another in their struggles. We are terrible at having nice things! 😂
So true and music has continued to bond. I am a big Zydeco Music fan (speaking of New Orleans and Louisiana in general) and the history of the Cajun and Creole people is incredibly interesting.
I can't believe she died like that. The things some people are capable of are baffling. I don't think I'll ever wrap my head round that one. What a twisted man.

Bailey has been slaying every story and absolutely fabulous. Thank you Bailey for highlighting the tragedy of the founders of jazz.
I've loved jazz for so long. Thank you for doing this. I've always found it difficult to get any real information until the last few years. Can you please do a dark history episode on the history of nursing? For example, a lot of women tried for witchcraft were actually what we would consider these days as nurses or midwives? It wasn't until Florence Nightingale that patients were fed, or even changed the bed linen between each person. Could you imagine? You have a huge nurse fan base, here in Australia at least. You definitely kept us all sane the last few years.
This was too interesting to me. I had an uncle and aunt who played jazz back probably about the thirties in New Orleans. He played sax and she was a singer. My mom always wanted to visit him there but was much younger than him and he would try to dissuade her from going there.
I wonder if he had one of those cards.
She died this year and had alot of memorabilia. I don't remember seeing one of the cards.
The sad thing is, he killed himself in about 1960. His wife killed herself 2 years later and they had a son. My cousin Bobby who as it turned out was a phenomenal drummer.
I was born in 61 and don't remember my aunt and uncle, but we grew up with their son. He was always there on holidays as my mom took him in as her own.
It was a sad life for all but it always blew me away how talented they all were.. I think there was a story there that will never be found out.

@@msfortuknit if you could, what would teach in history class, as in what are the most important topics to teach? you also must fit it within 240 hours as this is as much time kids from ages 11-16 get to learn history
@@moondust1992 I would use a more culturally based research based approach. I know that teachers today have plates that are more than full and the curriculum that districts approve are often times more and more of the same ol' vs more culturally accurate occurrences. I know it can be challenging and can take a lot of time. However it can be done. My child was fortunate to have a teacher that did this and I live in a tiny Podunk town in the Midwest drowning in white privilege. It's fun to also engage the kiddos by challenging them to do the research and have them provide their sources. Prepares them for possible college and teaches them how to look for information. So cool that Baily has this platform and such cool conversations can be had!
@@moondust1992 This has nothing to do about whitewashing though. You don't need to whitewash to fit important topics in class
It’s mind blowing of all the things that they didn’t talk about in history! All the untold true stories!
