  • It time to rebuild the walls of the Medical Attack Vehicle Ambulance camper conversion - I show you step by step how to insulate, install wall slats, cut & install the wall board. This really is not difficult - I enjoyed the project and the results will be a a cozy four seasons condo on wheels.

    One dollar, dark brown cotton gloves that you buy at the dollar store, are best to work with fiberglass. Doing the inside of that ambulance, I doubt you'll need eye protection or a mask, but the itch on your hands, you'll notice immediately. Soap up your hands afterwards and use a hand cream. Throw away the gloves. Don't reuse them. You're doing great !!

    Thanks so much for this video, I subscribed! It answered so many questions that I had in my mind about framing/insulating an ambulance. I'm looking to purchase one here were soon to convert into a traveling museum that can fold up and away and open up to a livable camper. At the moment researching power with absolutely zero electrical experience is my biggest hurdle to get over.
    Have you had any experience with raising the roof on one of these? I'm considering making a fiber glass shell to fit the roof cutout but I'm not sure if that would be the best course of action.
    Thanks again, I look forward to watching more of your videos!

      Thank you! I decided to paint the walls gray and they look fantastic. Will be in the next video.

      Thank you! It's finally to the place where it is fun to see the progress each day and I am not covered with soot at the end of every day.

    Wait! In residential builds you are required to use a vapour barrier over the fg insulation because it transfers moisture so easily. I’m guessing that temperature variations will be even greater in a metal box that you have decided to “condition” (heat and ac). What R value do you think you have there? Please at least leave an access panel where you can monitor this air/moisture issue easily over time. Check for discolouration of the pink fg and use a moisture meter. Consider doing a test section with Roxull which is also super easy to work with. Btw we worry about you! Please use gloves and a mask when using fg insulation. We want you to be doing builds for many years to come! 🚚🚕🚗🚓🚒🚐🚎

      Thank you very much for your concern. You are absolutely correct about the mask and gloves. I like your idea of the moisture meter test. I am not familiar with Roxull - will have to check that out.
      I based the method and type of insulation on the following research I did (I am certainly not an expert):
      1. The insulation method is the one employed by the Wheeled Coach factory (who built this ambulance) which builds multiple types of ambulances and has for decades. There is a great video on the construction methods used at the factory and you can see the insulation in the video: czcams.com/video/cV9q4pOo2g4/video.html
      2. The ambulance sold for over $100,000 so I know they did not cut corners on insulation costs. The ambulances have to sit in hot areas for extended times and are subject to drastic changes in temperature so keeping patients at a controlled temperature is critical.
      3. The ambulance is certified to very high health standards and even higher for fire rescue so the method cannot be such a way that it traps moisture and causes harmful effects for patients or healthcare workers.
      4. When opening all the walls up there was no evidence of mold or mildew with the exception where the window was improperly installed and leaked for 13 years. All the rest of the black in the videos is soot from 13 years of fires - seems the fine particles can get into everything (bleach has no affect on it - seems to be just carbon - 409 seems to work best).
      5. The ambulances are held to strick maintenance schedules and I would have to believe that if a problem had been identified over the years that Wheeled Coach would issue a recall or safety notice requiring a refit of the walls. Being owned by a government entity they would be required to comply with any health risk issues.
      6. I am using a wall construction method that uses all screws making it easy to open up all the walls should it become evident that a problem exists.
      I do appreciate your concern, you always have the best advice and tips and are very knowledgeable on health issues.

      PriusStealthCamper Adventures Hi! Back from an auction. All good info. Because I do third part certification testing what is approved by weak regulators in both your country and mine the human health issue almost always falls to “Did it kill anyone”? The manufacturer encapsulated more than you will be so that is another factor. Cant remember when it was built but they may not have had more options then. Does the MAV have double walls? The way builds in every vehicle are decided is costs be reduced - it often falls to what the eye can see. Fyi- I nvr recommend anything “pink”...i recommend roxul or dow blue rigid. Roxull came out with its product in “blow in” format which would be super cool for very hard to reach voids. I think you would get a higher R value from Roxull and it doesnt soak up moisture like pink fg. Mother knows best! Lol 🙃 (and put on those gloves and mask!)

    Nice Ambulance, what department did you get it from?

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety

      It was owned by Montgomery County Maryland Division of Equipment Management (Fire Department EMS) - that's about all I know about the history. Not much. She's a bit rough but transforming nicely. Very well built.

    Off subject! Aren't you the one who built an air conditioner out of an igloo icemaker? I was looking for the video to show a friend of mine, but I can't find it anywhere can you please help?

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety

      I am! The videos are still online and I will give you the link. You have to have the link to see them. The initial tests were good but the long term testing in hot weather was disappointing and I did not want to upset people who went to the trouble to build the system and it did not meet their expectations. It was a neat experiment and I was disappointed that it did not work out well. Feel free to share just mention why they are not publicly listed.

    I watched the factory build video you recommended and considering what they retail for, compared with what you paid, that's gotta be a lifetime bargain. The vans with a rollcage caught my interest. Why would you buy anything else, if you value quality?

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety

      Absolutely agree! I was sold after seeing the quality. These are made to last way after their medical use but there is no demand for them. The ambulance box decreases the value of the chassis.

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety +2

      If you want to see something really spectacular watch this video where they intentionally flip a wheeled coach ambulance with test dummies. czcams.com/video/I4Xkfvj_bxg/video.html The box only gets a bent corner. The box also protects the cab from any driver compartment damage.

    Over time that Fiberglass insulation will sag, better to use hard insulation instead and you will save yourself from the itch!!

    • @bentnickel7487
      @bentnickel7487 Před 5 lety +1

      Tahir Rana It will only sag if it gets wet and even if, in 10 years, he needs to replace it, the attachment method he used will allow him access within minutes.
