Phil is the only dude who approaches things from a logical standpoint when it comes to the draft scenarios. LT/WR/WR/Rattler is the best way to build this offense day 1. If Rattler sucks you have 2 first round picks in 2025 and you can move around wirh draft capital the same way Minnesota is looking to do in 2024
I think the pats roster not ready for a qb is the laziest take ever here is why
1. Patriots have a elite defense with studs like Uche, Jennings, Dugger, Marcus Jones and Peppers in their primes as well as experienced stars like Judon and Jonathan still playing at high level. Gonzalez played at an All pro level as a rookie before getting injured and has exciting potential at just 22 years old in year 2. Bentley and takitaki and tavai are still solid players in their own rights and white and mapu flashed potential and could easily break out. An elite defense means a QB does not have to score 40 points per game
2. Underrated offensive line Strange and Sow have high upside at the guard spots and with better coaching they could take the next step. Onwenu is a unit at RT. David Andrews is a QBs best friend LT can be taken on day 2 and we have a good offensive line with Scott peters as our o line coach.
3. Brissett is a great teacher for the rookie and he could start while the rookie learns learn from and Van Pelt is a QB expert at OC
4. Stevenson and Gibson complement each other nicely at RB
Lastly the receiving corps do need some work, but Henry and Pop Douglas is a good security blanket and Osborn is an underrated signing and a rd 3 wr could be a massive steal as well for the QB
Here’s my problem with it, when is it bad to be able to take a chance at drafting your franchise qb? Who says “ ya we a shot at a great qb , but the team ain’t ready for it” it’s stupid
I've been the lone Spencer Rattler guy in New England for a while now, good to see someone else mention him. He is similar to Baker Mayfield, same size and arm talent, same polarizing swagger and vocal competitor. Great anticipatory thrower and throws in the middle of the field more than anyone except Maye. Unlike every other prospect running the air raid offense that doesn't work in the NFL, the last 2 years Rattler ran a pro offense, under center with pro route concepts. With the exception of Penix, no other prospect has had to survive adversity like Rattler. He is the mentally toughest prospect in the draft. He can handle the ups and downs of being a rookie, the booing, the benchings. Coddled guys like Maye and Caleb there's a big question if they can. The value for Rattler is great at 68 (or a slight trade up into the 2nd). I'd trade back for an historic haul and take Rattler. Worst case if he doesn't work out, you still have a ton of picks. Far better than swinging and missing on a high pick QB
Great take! I've been right there with you on Rattler. I don't think the jump to the NFL will spook him plus you get a haul to rebuild the whole team.
I sent this to a buddy yesterday. There are 3 of us apparently. “Also, I don’t care what others say. I like this Rattler kid if pats don’t want to go QB with higher picks trade out. “ (he laughed at me but I remain unphased)
I've been on Rattler for a while now myself. Trading down, getting a LT at 11, a WR at 23 and 34 and Rattler at 68 followed by a TE then some Defensive depth with the rest of the picks. Weaponize the offense in the 1st draft and build from there. You'll have 2 first round picks next year, one of them probably top 10 and the other most likely inside the top 15-18
It's amazing to me that these guys were around Brady for all that time and they're still fawning over players who can run around and throw! To be a great quarterback, you need five things: a ridiculous drive to win, intelligence, accuracy, arm strength, and pocket awareness.
Because they watched the modern NFL evolve around Brady and realized that there are other, more tangible formulas to win football games (and titles) that don't rely on Byzantine route tree philosophy and a once-in-a-generation on the field QB/OC combo making a thousand consecutive 7-yard reads.
Sure, it's never bad to have a stalwart pocket presence behind a stout offensive line. But moving Heaven and Earth to make an archaic football model successful in 2024 when there are literal cheat codes staring you in the face is the definition of stubborn insanity.
Just remember that prioritizing athleticism and creativity in your signal caller doesn't mean you have to ignore the other fundamentals, both in their development as a player as well as team composition. You can have it all, but you can't teach physical talent.
it's tough. once they get paid they lose that hunger that makes them great
Mahomeboy is why but even then Matthew Stanford won a superbowl and Brady at 40+ so it's 50/50 the game is changing tho and Brady had a drive unmatchable lightning in a bottle
Totally agree
Dear Phil, I'm Milán from Hungary and I've been listening to you and Tom Curran for about 10 years - thanks again for the podcasts (maybe you didn't know that you have fans in Central Europe). 😊 My question is: let's assume the Patriots select a QB with the 3rd pick, they are on the clock in the second round and have to choose between a tackle and a WR (the scenario you mentioned at the end of this podcast). In this case does it matter in your opinion that there are still valuable OTs on the free agent market, but WRs not so much anymore?
Penix jr is a pocket passer like tom Brady with some mobility and a stronger arm. 😊 And he doesn't hesitate and take sacks! Basically Penix jr is a gunslinger that's not afraid to
pull the passing trigger!
He got that cam Newton build but he got injured, he got a arm on him like Tua..if we trade down i want a stud..
@@Locksmith92Cam Newton was 245lbs and tua is left handed but arm is not as strong for the long ball or accurate.
Give me a hell yes on either pick at QB Phil. It all hinges on the trade, and i think the Patriots are going to ask for to much and miss out. I know qb is an important position, but 2 day one picks sure would be nice. Im wondering How could we get 3 first day one picks? Do you think someone would give up this yrs 1st round pick for both (25 season) draft picks. One from Minnesota and ours of course. Go back to 11,23, and see if Arizona is willing to do something like that. That would be sick to end up with the 4, 11, 23 pick in this yrs draft. I think whatever it cost it would be worth it
Say no to Rattler. Johnny Manziel 2.0
agree-rattler blows.
Rattler is someone you draft with the expectation that he can become a quality backup and potentially lead a team for few years in his prime.
But he’s not a lefty like Penix Phil, which is most of the point of taking Penix so you don’t also need to draft a LT high with you already having Onwenu on his blind side.
Penix being a southpaw makes Mike Owenu is blindside tackle. So you could MAYBE live with Chucks at left tackle and use a high pick on a TE, WR, or CB.
No one talks about Michael Pratt from Tulane (6th round projection). He had a bad situation there and made the entire team better, turning them into winners. He is athletic, mobile, and very accurate. I like Penix and his rocket launcher arm, but his injury history scares me.
His problem is the same as the guy we shipped to Jacksonville. He has no arm! Good touch, smart, can read defenses, but a weak arm!
Packers way includes QB’s that are a minimum of 6’2”. They like large hands too. So would they overlook 2” in height because of the hands? 🤷🏻
I don't know that I agree that Legette is a true X. I think he has the potential to develop into one, but I think he's better served as a Z right now. Probably the most fun guy expected to go day 2 though.
Waiting around to 68 is a dangerous game. If someone swoops in before that, you've missed altogether on a QB. Passing on pick #3 in favor of a dart throw is crazy and should lead to firing for all involved.
Kedon Slovis Sam Hartman still around
@@conlenodriscoll4464 neither of them have the talent to start in the nfl
@@Daniel_Capital okay and neither does Drake Maye or Spencer Rattler right now what’s your point?
@@conlenodriscoll4464 drake maye doesn’t have arm talent but hartman does? That’s… an interesting opinion. Best of luck sir
@@Daniel_Capital you said none of them have the talent to start in the NFL stop putting words in my mouth. If Drake Maye came into the NFL to start he’d likely be the worst quarterback in the league and if you think otherwise you’re obviously clueless and it’s really pointless for me to take this conversation any further. Arm talent = NFL starter, big Zach Wilson guy huh? There’s a little more to the quarterback position than arm talent buddy, nobody is drafting Drake Maye to start this year that’s the only reason JJs name is in there with him also being a big spencer rattler guy isn’t doing much for your credibility in the first place. Sam Hartman is more ready to take over an NFL offense than Drake Maye today and I’d live and die by that and I’m not even a big Sam Hartman guy
I hear this a lot. "If you really like (Penix) just take him at three." But wouldn't that be dumb Phil, if you could get 2 or 3 1st round picks and still get him? Now if you can't get that kind of deal for a three that's a different argument.
Rattler failed at QB University. Yes he had Caleb behind him but Williams didn't take the job. Rattler lost it. He has a chance to succeed but anyone who takes him (in round three or wherever he ends up going) is getting an inconsistent player. Throwing from different arm slots is only impressive if it leads to consistent success. Rattler hasn't shown that. Legette is a big gamble at the top of round 2 too. He did nothing until the past year (42 receptions in 4 years prior).
I still don't think #11, #23, and a 2025 1st is enough of a return
I would not pick Penix Jr. until #34.
I know you’re going to say he’ll be gone, but I’m factoring in his injury history & age.
Thanks, Phil...below is another version of what you broke down:
Trade with Vikings 11 & 23 & Pat's 34
#11 whichever Tackle
#23 whichever receiver
#34 Penix or Rattler or Pratt, but, the team has $43M in cap space for Brady or a "veteran QB trade" like Dak Prescott or whomever is possible and Pats might have an "extra high rounder" from Vikings deal for this "blockbuster QB trade.".
Other option at #34 the Edge guy who replaces Judon when he leaves after next season.
I think the above in whatever format you mentioned helps the team more than gambling on a top 3 QB...Belichick only left like a week ago, we haven't forgotten everything he taught us yet have we?
Why an edge guy, when that’s the worst position in this draft, and we took Keion White last year in the second round!
I have been beating the Rattler drum for 2 months. Trade out of 3 and get your long term left tackle, get your #1 reciever, and then grab Rattler. I think Rattler is as likely to work out at the next level as Maye or Daniels... which comes with the chance to bust as well, but I'd rather bust at 34 then 3. Get your team and take a chance on a kid who has been humbled and has an amazing work ethic with some real talent to boot. His floor is low, but his ceiling is definitely Mahomes.
I would love to see Alt at 6... Well find out , but not soon enough
I think if they can get both of minnesota's first round draft picks, they should do that. They would have to settle for bo nix. But they get their tackle in the first round too.And then they're picking a receiver with a second round instead of a third round. And troy franklin is a better receiver than all of those perceivers this guy mentioned. You wanna talk about reuniting receivers and quarterbacks? How about putting bo nix and troy franklin back together. Entirely doable.
Rattler is a 6' qb who ran a 5 second forty. So you essentially have a 6' pocket passer. Because of his grit and arm strength he might be considered in round 4 or later.
I remember the show rattlier was on, he did come off douchbaggish
PENIX GOT THAT DAWG IN HIM
Rattler seems like a slightly better Zappe
He isn't.
Just 7 more days guys we’re so close to being done with this
Imagine if the Redskins take Drake maye with the second pick and the Patriots take JJ McCarthy with the third, the Cardinals phone will be ringing off the hook
Please... no short kings. And no noodle arms, either.
I don’t want Penix. ALC 2 times in the same knee… I’ll pass. Stay at 3 take Maye all of his issues are easy to coach out of him. 6’4 225 LBS probably gonna be. 235 by the time the season starts he runs like Josh Allan and has a cannon
If he’s on the road & his O-Line stinks. I bet the penalties are worse for the O-Line. So that definitely will affect the QB as well.
I typically like Phil but I haven’t seen more incompetent takes than him about the QB position. Wants the worst QB in late then wants to trade down for the worst of the second tier players. Hes a smart guy but man has he been stupid these last couple of months
Rattler 👍underrated
Underrated how? He went to a Heisman favorite on a top 10 team to being decent at a bottom rung SEC school.
So you want to take a less athletic guy with good mechanics and good anticipation? Hmm you know what kills both of those? Getting hit alot, ask Mac Jones
You've got to be kidding me. If they pass up on Maye or Daniels for a second or third round QB and some extra picks that will probably not even be on the team. I'm done watching the morons. This is a no brainer they need a franchise QB not just a franchise QB a QB that can beat the competition that surronds him.The QB needs to be damn good to compete with the QB'S in the afc east right now. We don't have one! Stay put take whoever falls to you the top 3 QB in this draft are all extremely high in potential you can't frigging lose it's not a huge risk both Daniels or Maye are worth taking.
Penix is better. Problem is Patriots have no top WRs.
If you're looking for a QB that can survive a bad O Line, I'd take Bo Nix, who is more athletic than Rattler. Nix can throw a ball on target in just 2.3 seconds, too quick for a pass rush. Get Nix, plus a bunch of small, fast WRs.
I like Spencer rattler
spencer rattler is a great choice, third round
Why not take Joey milton later
Just draft JJ and relax. He will be the best QB in this draft.
Wish I watched Rattler play.
I saw him, he is terrible.
He isn't period....This is a Perry contrarian take
I want the patriots to draft Kedon Slovis
Yup keep smoking that Crack pipe
JJ bad under pressure when he was the best CFB QB at that? Stop throwing imaginary shade at JJ, we get it u want the guy that is big, but can't complete routine throws, is not good under pressure... just draft JJ and move forward
If was straight, no trade drafting I would select Jayden Daniels first, then Michael Pennix Jr second, then Daniel Maye third, then Spencer Rattler fourth, and finally, JJ McCarthy, fifth. Both Daniels and Pennix give you the best passing, especially deep and accurate throws and each run very well. In the next group I would put Maye and Rattler. McCarthy is not really on my listbecause people would pressure on him because like Brady, he went to Michigan. Fans and others w3oulod w3ant Brady 2, not McCarthy.
YES SPENCER RATTLER IS OK TOO! IF WE GET MARVIN HARRISON THEN DRAFT ANOTHER TALENT WR IN ROUND 3.
I think Maye is slam dunk at 3. At 34 Adonai Mitchell might be there. Despite his size and off the charts athletic skills, he takes play off, has a questionable attitude and is diabetic. I'm not sure how the league will assess him or the Pats for that matter.
Cole burgess wide receiver 6'1 203 pounds 38 touchdowns pls patriots lol at this guy he is literally puca nacua of this years draft
The Patriots should draft Drake Maye at 3 and Spencer Rattler in the 3rd or 4th round. They should get 2 QBs in this draft.
Research Drake Maye's accuracy with a clean pocket... it's putrid. That's all you need to know about that prospect.
We have too many needs to waste a second pick on a QB
If the pats dont gamble on a QB with the 3rd overall pick. Then they should just trade back and load up on every position. Dont even take a QB at all. Either way next year is a tank season and don't have a shot at playoffs regardless. Finish 0-17 and draft the best QB next year with a brand new young team around them. Just start every practice squad next year it doesn't even matter
We have not one star player on offense and very few solid players. Our skilled players have no explosive play ability. We are not a good team offensively. I'm concerned that we win like 6 or 7 games next year and have a middling draft pick. We need another year or two of top 3 type picks. We could get stuck in a cycle of 7 to 9 wins a year for a decade.
@stephenmartin6430 exactly we easily could become the cowboys lol. I'll say draft Maye if he's available. He's only 22 keep him practicing to become NFL ready for a year or two and while we suck just keep drafting more talent and signing free agents for the new dynasty. If daniels is the one left I would just trade back he's to old by the time the team is ready
Spencer Rattler is the guy I hope the patriots get. He’s mature and can be the next great quarterbacks
Rattler is a shorter Mac Jones. Penix is the choice of we can't get Daniels.
Idiotic comment. Penix is terrible and like 50 years old.
He'll be cowboys
No thanks on rattler. He's Mac 2.0
Rattler Oay until i hesrd he was 6.0'
So no
Have little interest in a 6'1" QB.
I watched qb1 on Netflix and rattler did come off as a douche not gonna lie😂
Exactly. I dont want Rattler anywhere near my locker room. Id rather take a risk on Michael Pratt or Joe Milton (who I believe will be a steal)
Rattler is Zappe with a more fragile psyche. Don't waste a draft pick.
Stop the BS
I'll take rattler in later rounds for sure
Wow, trade the 3rd pick and get this kid as QB. I like him, this Rattler kid
I don't think the patriots could make a worse pick. This guy is hot garbage. He makes bad decisions and wilts under pressure. HARD NO!
Rattler the rat
That's crazy! Just say you want a white QB but don't come out with this bs. The next Mac Jones is on the way get ready Pats fans.
What a stupid thing to say.
Dumb comment smh
Who is the white QB?
Phil, you guys should run sone more shitty ads & make your videos completely unwatchable. #MoneyGrubbers
