  • This week, Nvidia's Geforce NOW and "Junk-Store" introduce major advancements in playing non-Steam and incompatible games on the Deck. Plus, two small but meaningful features hit the Deck’s beta client including quick Southpaw settings and external drive formatting in Game Mode! We’ll talk about them. And a new Proton update makes some new games (and some old favorites) playable. Let’s get into the news!

    • @TremereTT
      @TremereTT Před měsícem +42

Anti cheat IS sorted. The game devs in many cases just don't allow anti cheat in Proton or Linux. It's a simple checkmark in their console with easy anti cheat or similar software! They can interactively include or exclude Proton and Linux how ever they want....one minute it's on another one it's off... but they just want it off.
Also these anti cheat softwares aren't the solution to end cheating anyway.

it's up to the game developer *cough* EA, origins *cough* ... EAC already put an update to support linux way back in sept.2021.. but the devs needs to update their legacy code. they said it's as easy as pushing a button, but the damn AAA company just wont use the newer library. Some did update their code like Apex Legends

GeForce now works great on the ultimate tier. I was playing No rest for the wicked on potato settings natively on the steam deck and it still wasn't enough. It felt like my deck was going to melt. On geforce now it runs great on the ultimate tier and it doesn't use a lot of the steam decks resources. It's perfect if you have fast Internet.

I wonder if valve will adress the issue where you can’t uninstall versions of proton with “missing shared content” typically it means a game is using that proton meaning it won’t let or delete it but sometimes no game could be using proton and it just does that. Like I can’t remove proton 9 for whatever reason and my usual work around didn’t work. I wonder if there’s a way we could sort our games based on if they use a certain version of proton to make it easier to find them.

For Geforce Now, not sure if "support" is the good term, also not understanding why is it in "Beta" when it's just a shortcut for chrome launching GNow. A bit sad it's not the real app that could let us change to 120fps or low input mode etc.

Been using the beta family sharing feature with my kids ever since it was released and it works great, the only minor complaint - if you call it that - would be I wish that it would have an icon or something on the game within the library view that indicated if it was yours or one from another family member (maybe the user's steam icon?). Once I enabled that feature my steam library jumped by 200 games, and when looking through it I found a few games that I thought I had bought but turns out they were a family member's game, it would just be cool to see a difference (and maybe there is a way now that I just haven't discovered yet). Overall loving the feature though.

A great decky plugin is also the one that you can set a maximum charge percentage (you can disable that, too). For all those that often play "plugged in" and don't want to ruin your battery. You can also disable it to gain that last percentage that are missing and fully charge it to have more juice on the go. It will GREATLY increase the longevity of your battery, especially if you often play plugged in.

If I select Proton 9 for a game when I try to start it the startup screen says its downloading content but it never gets past 0%. If I change it to Proton 8 it the game starts fine. I used Geforce Now to play Path Of Exile on my old laptop. It ran great! With the streaming setup I can actually play the game without having to resort to an abysmal resolution where I don't even see what's happening on the screen. I stopped using it since I got a steam deck (poe is playable on steam deck with a lot of control tweaks). It's cool they made an easy install script but I don't see much point in streaming on the Deck. It's been powerful enough for what I played on it. I guess it's useful if you really want to crank all graphical settings to the max.

I've been using it since the Steam Deck came out, first through a 3rd party app, then the official one... once I got it working, lol.
I highly recommend it. Rust, for example, is awesome on SteamDeck, and it loads the map in a lot quicker on GFN than even my gaming PC, so... yeah. Definitely worth it, even at the lower tier, IMO. And if they have a free trial, go for it. Nothing lost there if you don't like it, lol.
I recommend dropping the GPU wattage all the way down to 3w or 5w though when using GFN, as the rendering is all done on their end, not locally. Saves a good deal of battery that way. I get way longer playtimes on GFN that way than using Windows (or even SteamOS/Bazzite) and playing the games locally.

I'll be waiting for an official integration of moonlight for the deck at this point. The moonlight I have installed through emudeck has the super annoying black bars.... And the only way to avoid them is to stretch the game (sooo no) or to manually change the PC aspect ratio and I should do this every single time since I won't use my PC with 16:10.

i stopped support EA when i bought a game on xbox 360 that looked really fun, bought it. launched it and got "sorry the servers have shut down" and it was a multiplayer game only, that wasn't removed from the store and wasn't playable. so i had to call microsoft , they said kick rocks. then i had to call EA they said to kick rocks and call microsoft, so i did the most sane thing ever... just told my bank retrack all my funds from microsft for the xbox 360 as i had canceled it 3 times but they kept charging me. soon as i got the money closed that bank account out and never bought another console since and never bought an EA game but the 🏴‍☠ is the life for me and EA. F EA

it feels silly that nvidia is supporting the steam deck only by making it easier to use cloud gaming and not use native hardware. then again I think they did something with their drivers on linux so theres not much to complain about now

Our visual cortex automatically does the same thing without adding lag. Just need to stop focusing on the frame rate so much. This is how gamers survived playing the early consoles on a CRT TV.

As cool as it is. This is also very scary to me. It is the future of gaming getting shaped right now. The slow transition to PC and console gaming becoming streaming only. It's pretty similar to what happened with movies turning into streaming.

Frankly, this is an unsustainable business model at global scale. Think about it. You can only divide a GPU so far. A 4090 can be split into 4 1080p streams. So if you had 100 million users, you'd need 25 million GPUs if everyone used a the entry level paid tier. 25 million GPUs in datacenters is untenable. That would be 7 million servers to run all that if they each had 4 GPUs.
Having a GPU for every gamer in some data center -- or even a fraction of a GPU per gamer -- is just untenable. Realistically Stadia failed because it just wasn't sustainable. You can only virtualize a GPU so far before you compromise on graphics quality.
At least with GeForce NOW, you use your existing Steam account.

@@gardiner_bryant Yeah. I just tried it out. Not on my steam deck though. Wanted to give it a quick go on the desktop. It's not too bad i'd say. I've tried both playstations and xbox cloud gaming. And it's pretty much in between those two when it comes to something like latency. Though i'd highly recommend geforce now over the other two. As like you said. Your steam games are available through geforce now.
But yeah. Saw your video. Felt like testing LMAO. I did the ultimate cloud gaming test. Rocket League. And it was playable. But you have to expect the once in a while impossible to read the opponent lack spikes once in a while.

I just can't get behind game streaming, the input lag kills the experience, and the constantly fluctuating video quality due to the terrible state of the internet infrastructure I have access to just makes it not worth it. Local network Game streaming through steam or parsec works pretty decent and has minimal latency issues, so occasionally I will do that, but I honestly rather just play natively even if it means slightly less shiny graphics. or less framerate.

No nvidia does not support deck...
Deck needs a native app from nvidia, otherwise you can not get everything working like 4k,120 fps, hdr and vrr for docked gaming or 90 fps hdr for handheld mode.
Nvidia did the laziest shit here with this "support"
