This song always reminds me of a horrible time in my life, where I ended up alone and financially struggling, I almost ended up homeless too. One day after finally getting out of that hole and I moved into my own place, this song started playing on the radio. It was a new beginning for me and the start of a new life.
I bought his first album Bre ak down song on it. My brother in-law came over from the Nethland and this song was fused in his head.that was a life time ago. This is approved .
Saw Tom and the Heartbreakers in Adelaide (South Australia) in the early eighties. They were support act for Dylan. Jesus he was pathetic. Got my money's worth with Tom and his band.
Still rock, i think...Elvis and Chuck Berry are, Zeppelin and The Who are, The Eagles and Pink Floyd are, AC/DC and Midnight Oil are, Bowie and Lou Reed are...so, Tom is, i'm shure...
I was too, sorta. Discovered "Full Moon Fever" after seeing "Free Falling" on MTV when I was in like, 3rd grade. Asked my mom to buy me that cassette tape. First music I ever "owned." He's been a favorite ever since. Other girls at the time liked New Kids on the Block. Not me. I was a rock 'n roller from day one.
My best friend of 33 years (who has lived with me (platonically) for 25+ years) passed away 2 days ago (blood cancer/'Multiple Myeloma'). For the week & a half before his death, he was being kept heavily sedated (for pain) in hospice & was unable to communicate. The day before he died, I held his hand and told him I love him, and asked him to please send me a sign when he gets to Heaven & gets his wings. *ONE HOUR* _after_ his time of death, this song ('Learning To Fly') came on the radio...& the song that played _after this_ one, was "Learn To Fly" by Foo Fighters. Even if it was just coincidence, these 2 songs being played *back-to-back* at the *one-hour mark* after his death, & my having asked him for a *sign when he gets his wings,* brought me comfort. ❤
I'm so sorry for your loss. I feel your pain. I lost my only son to Cancer when he was 32. He loved that song Learning to fly when he was a kid him and his sister used to sing that song and also Free Falling. Every time I hear them it takes me back to when he was a kid. 😔💔🙏🙏💙💙❤️
My dog passed away after 17 years last year I had him since I was 14 he was with me through everything I mean everything and not long after this came on when I was drinking & all I could think about was my little mini fox terrier ❤ I hope your little one has his wings too
@@nicolecocoxoxo oh sweetie his music transcends generations. He and his music will live on forever unlike the music of the current generation of auto tune and massive industrial production.
This song will always remind me of the bittersweet, turning corners, and moving on. I listened to it a lot around the time that my relationship with my first love, (an 11 year relationship) was fizzling out and coming to an end. I loved her desperately, and yet i knew we were sliding further and further away from eachother. When she broke the news to me that she wanted to move on, I didn't want to let go, as I had told her I never would. What goes up, must come down, and coming down is the hardest thing.
The more time is pushing us further away from the 90‘s, the more golden this unique decade appears in retrospective…"Learning to fly“ by Tom Petty is a class of its own, one of those 90’s masterpieces, that reflects the zeitgeist of this era so perfect…a time, when life was much more simple and essential, when everything was coloured in purple and the grass was greener than nowadays…

This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. This song is very special to me. My father was a commercial airline pilot. We shared a love of flying and airplanes. On the day of my first solo flight, he came with me to see me fly for the first time. It was the only time in his 85 years he ever said he was proud of me. And he'd been waiting his whole life to say, "My son the pilot". On our way home, this song came on the radio. I miss you so much Pa.

Even if Tom had only written this one song he'd be a legend
Yep!
Damn straight!
To be fair that's what we call a "one hit wonder".
Maybe
Truth!
I was in this music video and the most incredible experience of my life. Rest in Peace, Tom Petty.
What part did you play in it?
I thought I recognized you lol
This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts.
Just saw stevie nicks today and she talked about how Tom let her use a song of theirs and it was magical
RIP TOM

This song was used in the 1991 Chicago Bulls championship video. Great song. Rip Tom Petty.
💯Missing the 80’s and 90‘s NBA so much…it‘s not only about the legendary Bulls and their two 3-Peats…there were so many great teams and charismatic players, totally different to nowadays soft, boring and clonelike wannabe superstars…
Next to the Bulls i was a big fan of the Supersonics, the "Reignman“ was🔥
@@schwarzesonnehyperboreas1987 totally agree. Many great teams and personalities.
One of the best cool dudes of all time. No effort. Legend

Thinking of my Dad on the eve of what should have been his 73rd birthday. This was his favorite Tom Petty song. Not sorry I stole his greatest hits cd in high school and was able to see them live in Cincinnati in 2008. We miss you Papa Dave.
This song was played at my father's funeral service, who died because of cancer in the age of 56 in 2018
Hope you learned to fly, i miss you

I feel your pain man .we lost our 22 year old son.It was long time ago , but still hurts. He was a good guitarist, so his guitar went with him.
Ever since his passing I am currently on a Tom Petty/Heartbreakers/Traveling Wilburys/Mudcrutch marathon. R.I.P. Tom.
I did it last spring with Gregg Allman and now TP. So sad.
I did a Soundgarden/Audioslave marathon when chris cornell passed away and now I did this one
I WILL NEVER FORGET SEEING TOM IN CONCERT....OF COURSE HE WAS GREAT
Guitarzan. Me too ... except I'm such a loyalist I've been concentrating on just Tom with the Heartbreakers and his solo stuff!
Me too. He seemed to be so down to earth. Very cool dude.
Rip Tom
I am heartbroken at this irreplaceable loss. The world is forever more a poorer place. Goodbye Tom Petty and thank you so very much.

I'm learning to fly but I an't got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing. Love this song still ❤
My father passed away a month ago and a year ago we saw Tom petty in concert for the final time in Cleveland. It was amazing and I hold on to that memory today. We had a private service for my father and a man sang this song for my dad acoustically and it was amazing. I remember it alway. RIP to two great men. Tom petty and my father.
