Hard to believe that he's been gone for 6 years...forever singing in the Great White Open.
Ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to see him perform live! So sad I didn't get the opportunity! R.I.P TOM YOUR'E A LEDGEN!!!!!!!
Johnny was (and still remains) the perfect choice to play Eddie in this video. RIP dear Tom. 💔
Johnny foreshadowed his own story... I'd be honored if some Tom Petty fans would take a listen to my live keyboard & vocal CZcams performance of INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN in tribute to one of the purest artists that the USA has ever produced. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thank You Tom, THE LEGEND LIVES ON
Cry baby
Least convincing club bouncer ever
How can he "remain the perfect choice"? That doesn't make any sense. The choice was a one-time thing that can't be changed later.
rip
Petty had his heart broken for MANY years..one day it just caught up to him. You think its a coincidence?
Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway, Matt Leblanc, Terrence Trent Darby, and Cynna Phillips all in one video! Leave it to Tom to include all this talent!!
Plus Eddie's girlfriend in this video was on the show burn notice and was a badass
Emily Blunt
"You can look back, but it's best not to stare." -Tom Petty
I'm keeping that one
I'd be honored if some Tom Petty fans would take a listen to my acoustic keyboard & vocal cover of INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN on my YT site in tribute to one of the purest artists that the USA has ever produced. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thank You Tom, THE LEGEND LIVES ON
It's when you start to stare, you embrace the death of you. That's why one of the hardest lessons in life, is to always keep moving forward, taking breaks along the way is alright. When you stop for too long, you find yourself done for.
Big Weekend love it
So much for sleep. Oh well. That gem is going in my back-pocket.
I love how Tom's tale is a warning, not a glorification of fame.
Spot on comment
It's a nice little morality tale.
in the movie "this boys life" perhaps, Daniel K + the illegal poppers pill stuff
Their A & R man said, "I don't hear a single..."
hey ax guess who wrote this nope its not tom the one who never wanted fame or fortune some one who was there like me yes i was there and yes i did write this sounds to good to be true but it is not tom played it i wrote it its along a long road yea tom is great but he needed a great writer well story teller if i told the story it would shock everyone i know everybody says no way yea i know but thats the way it goes i guess boy have i got a story to write about should i write it the new tom petty songs or just re arange the old ones to tell the other story hem i wonder well glad you like it not everyone does you know just something for the fans to think about i guess
Listen carefully and you will hear that this song is genius. The harmony, lyrics, the guitars, his timing when he comes in with his voice....God everything. Tom was a brilliant man.
I've immediately thought about The Beatles and a softer version of Oasis)
I really didn't appreciate this song when it came out. It's quite brilliant.
Tom petty will put you in the money
No not really brilliant this song is about going to Hollywood and selling ur soul. And a lot of his videos has Masonic satanic freak symbols like the black and white checkered boards in his music it's actually really easy to see where they stand once you educate yourself on these types of things
I love this song
OMG! Isn't this Johnny's story - before he lived it!!
Johnny Depp and Matt LeBlanc on a Tom Petty video is so ICONIC🎩🎶🎤
Not to mention Faye Dunaway who is arguably a bigger star than either of them
You said not to mention Faye Dunaway!
(I was going to comment on that glaring omission, but you'd dun dunnit)
@@justjeff4173 I find family Guy episode song from last Saturday
The funny thing is that he saw the future and the story of Johnny Depp & Amber Heard... But maybe it was just that Johnny got so excited about this song that he wanted to be like his character in this video 😂
And Terence Trent D'arby!
I met a guy in 92 on the beach, he played this song on his guitar. l felt in love. 30 years later and we still together + 3 kids . Thank you Tommy. Rip geanuis❤
Hello Sharon 👋 how are you doing today, hope you’re good??
Does your husband still play the guitar?
That is awesome! 😍❤️ Tom Petty bringing people together 😊

You are dearly missed Mr. Petty! Happy 73rd Birthday in Heaven. ❤
Whenever I experience feelings of loneliness or hopelessness, Tom's music has a remarkable ability to uplift my spirits and bring joy to my life. It reminds me how fleeting life is and encourages me not to fret over insignificant matters. Thank you, Tom Petty, for creating music that has such a profound impact in this vast universe.
It has the same effect on me. I love his music and will continue to do so for all my life. No other musician has even come close to Tom Petty when it comes to impacting lives on a deep level, in my opinion.
@@MrKrille93 u sound like a real idiot, in my opinion.
At the end, Matt Le Blanc should say," How you doin?"!
Faye Dunaway, Johnny Depp, Matt LeBlanc, Chynna Phillips, Terence Trent D’Arby, and Gabriele Anwar. Amazing lineup for an amazing music video.
RIP Tom Petty. You will be missed.
not to forget Faye Dunaway
Tom always surrounded himself with the BEST !!!! 💔 My heart is breaking.
his songs told stories that were sometimes reflections on Americana the good the bad and the ugly, but tempered with humor and hope. r.i.p.
Danke MM. I was just trying to remember all the names to faces. Problem solved
Pretty sure I saw Dustin Hoffman in there as well.
This video is such an excellent time capsule for the early 1990s. It is a fictional story filled with a lot of truth on the music industry, Hollywood, fame and the future for Johnny Depp.
The song is legendary, even though it was really just a minor hit for Petty. The video is unforgettable.
Imagine the wealth of talent the man possessed, when a narrative musical masterpiece like this is only considered one of his minor hits xD
Shouldn't have been a minor should have been a number-one cuz I'm listening to it right now
a young johnny depp as eddie!
This song was far too good to be on radio rotation.
@@keithn4304It was on rotation alright....for the next 25 yrs probably after its release.
Buy me a drink, sing me a song. Take me as I come, cause I can't stay long. -Tom Petty
💕
Thanks now I have that song stuck in my head again 🙃 😅
One of Depp's best roles. Hits differently with the whole process going on right now.
That's why I came back here. They warn you of s*x and dřúğś but not of narcissistic women. Poor JD. Poor Wil
There truly is nowhere you can escape this bs...
Agreed. I think about this music video all the time. Makes me sad to see him so old now.

Great artist ,Great guy.
Johnny Depp is the most iconic actor of our time. He's even in a Tom Petty video FFS!!! 👑
That's our Johnny 4ever
Back when music videos were awesome.. 80s and 90s..
Hello Angela 👋 how are you ??
Now that I’m old and retired I’m re-discovering lots of artists and music. I had honestly forgotten that Tom was this great. Shame on me. ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
Hi I Recommend a Favourite New indie rock song I came across Called 'the Bond Villain' by Robert Nix
Petty DOESN'T play any riffs or even lead guitar...life eh...Gary Moore the Irish guy from "Thin Lizy" is your man that does all guitar work...reason being is that Petty can't play guitar for toffee...do you're own research the facts are out there!
You know, as a younger man, I never much cared for Tom's music. Now, as a 38 year old man... I finally get it. I am most definitely a fan. 🙂
Never cross Faye Dunaway; she has magical powers.
Love this song. I'm actually incorporating the song title into a tattoo I'm getting tomorrow in memory of my sister who was a huge Tom Petty fan. She passed away in May and I know she would love it. She is "into the great wide open."
Rest in awesome, Kim Rossi

Good taste.
So young. 😮
Johnny Depp just being himself is hilarious... How could Tom see the future?

My exact thought
Jhonny deep was already very famous at the time 21jump street and some movies!! 🤦🏻♂️
@@alekos2740 I'm talking 'bout the fact that he ended just like in this video, fighting his wife, banned in half Hollywood and even in movies where he was the principal character...
I thought that was pretty obvious, everyone here knows that he was already famous...
haha my thoughts exactly, it's uncanny a little or it's just typical road to and from stardom, fame is not most stable thing in this world, you know?
Go Johnny go!:)
The star power in this video is incredible! Faye Dunaway, the other people!
"I woke up, in between a memory and a dream." ----Tom Petty

Real music, real musician and real instruments. What a timeless legend you are Sir - RIP

real music it is!
Died like all good music makers
Will always have you in my heart. Wish you were here. I 😚😚
Amen
Saw him 3 times in concert. Great performer.
Tom Petty has definitely got his own Star in the Heavens of Rockdom. He is an American Treasure, a Classic, like Elvis Presley or something.
His music is just so good!!!
Tom never forgot where he came from. I will forever love and miss that man.
Tom Petty had such a unique style. A showman and musician impossible to replace.
i've seen this video a hundred times and i just now realized it's Johnny at the end giving the tattoo. 🤯 😆
I never noticed till now Matt LeBlanc getting a tattoo at the very end, haha. It's fun seeing stuff from back in the day and sometimes seeing people who end up in bigger stuff later on
Such a beautiful bit of storytelling from a music legend.

Tom cast himself as the roadie named Bart. Man, I'm always picking up on new ways to dig on Mr. Petty. He was the real deal.
Amber vs Johnny song with love from Warrington (Lewis Carol) xxxx czcams.com/video/2rHiVJFjers/video.html.
And the Tattoo artist
I think he was also the reporter interviewing Eddie Rebel
Back in 70's, in the beginning of his career, he truly roadiest for george harrison.
And the tattoo artist as well!
Me at the end: “Wait, was that Joey from friends?” Turns out it was! What a star studded video
In '94 I turned 10... I got a Petty tape and a walkman... listened to that tape until it fell apart... absolutely loved this song! So many memories!
There is something about the guitar tones from late 80's, early 90's Petty songs that always evoke driving the open road for me.
The last DJ is 1 of my favorite albums. They did that tour and had to sprinkle in a few gold hits in the end but made sure to get the entire Last DJ album on the stage. I was side stage, and it felt like I was watching them in the studio.
@@switchbackimage5966 and how did you get sidestage, pray tell?
What a song. I forgot how much I love Tom Petty
HOW?
@@MunguiaDJPULP Bought Full Moon Fever cassette in high school and my best friend and i loved every minute of it. Went off to college and I guess started listening to other stuff. Found my old cassette at my parent's house 25 years later which got me interested in his music again . Bought Wildflowers CD on Amazon for $5 and I think it's actually better than Full Moon Fever. Amazing CD!! Then he passes away. I think his music will come back in popularity by the younger generation I really do.
It's amazing to think that this was the beginning of Johnny Depp's career.
He'd only been in NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET / PLATOON / and 21 JUMP STREET prior to this.

Hes still loves platoon and shes up for anther oscar
LETS GO JOHHNY
He didn't die he just went into the great wide open

I recall hearing something about a handful of writers (like 3) writing 90%+ of all music beginning sometime in the 2000s. My memory isn't exact, but it explains a LOT.
In my opinion, the Learning to Fly album in '91 was Tom's absolute creative peak... this is one of the songs that made me understand why I wasn't into the same kind of music my friend listened to... still think Johnny would have been an hell of a rockstar.
Movies pay more!
dnon75 welll...it depends on who you are. I've heard that someone called Paul or Mick or David is not poor. And by the way....being a rockstar is funnier in itself!
He can play guitar very well. Judging by the response he got when he played with Marilyn Manson at The Golden Gods Awards in 2012, he is a rockstar as well as an actor
I was joking, talking about his appearance. I admire him as an actor, but he'd better let his guitar at home. What the hell happened to MM....

So much I wanted to see Mr. Petty & his Heartbreakers again. Saw them once in my lifetime, in Memphis. Tickets cost $1.03.each! Idol his lyrics, music.
On the CD of Tom Petty's Greatest Hits there's a photograph on the back that shows him and the scoreboard from The Forum and I was there that night that the photograph was taken back in 1980. He was wonderful concert magic power and instruments they played the second to none

We're all getting old folks, share with your children so they appreciate real talent!!!!
they don't need you to tell them what real talent is.. and if you want to do that show then BACH not a 3 chord rock song. You sound old if you think music isn't good today, or that kids need music guidance ... they don't. As a professional for 58 year, talent and music is just fine. Old people forget how to look and find stuff. Don't be the cliche...
Tom Petty deserves a Nobel Prize, just like Bob Dylan did
neither of them do. the literary prize given to musician is highly controversial and not at all right if you ask me.
HUGUINI for real tho

Well it is a very good thing nobody did ask you. Writing music is very deserving of a Nobel Prize, but only for certain individuals. No, music is not antibiotics or machinery, but are you telling me it does not help further humanity.
such an amazing time capsule of both Tom's work, young Johnny Depp, and the early 90's. Saw Tom in concert a week before he passed in NY, RIP Tom!
In 1991, during the filming of Arizona Dream, Tom Petty approached Depp about appearing in the music video for his upcoming release 'Into The Great Wide Open'. This opportunity presented itself to Depp at a considerably opportune moment in his career.

One of the greatest music videos ever. Amazing how they could tell a whole story and have clips of the band
I saw him at Irvine meadows in 99 or 2000. The opening act was some band that played all instrumental and all had like mexican wrestler type masks on. Then when the Heartbreakers took the stage ....The opening band went nowhere and it was him and the heartbreak the whole time. It was a clever trick he played on the entire stadium that fooled everyone. It was so classic Tom petty. Then they played Heartbreaker songs. I wasn't a huge Tom petty fan before that concert but after seeing him I was sold. He didnt play this song, which suck, but specifically" don't come around here no more " was off the hook. R.I.P to an amazing musician who could fool 40 thousand people right in front of their eyes. Genius.. u are missed.
