When Conor fought Dustin in 2014, Dustin was #5 FW. He’s been in ufc rankings since they opened up in 2013. 11 years of being in the top 10 whether it was FW or LW. Now that’s an insane stat

For sure longevity I think is overlooked in favour of peak when rating someone all time. Like Alistair Overeem is arguably the greatest or at least most accomplished HW of all time - 22 years in the game, beat 7 or 8 UFC champions (just never WHILE they were champ), INSANE resume over the course of his career, Strikeforce, DREAM & K1 Champion all at time (I know K1 is kickboxing but it still adds to his overall accomplishments), stayed relevant as a contender until his 40s beating guys like Pavlovich. He did everything except win UFC Gold. If only he'd went for ground & pound instead of a gilly vs Stipe we would be talking about Overeem so much differently. Now even if you disagree and I fully understand if you do, Dustin is kinda similar. Insane longevity at the absolute highest level, once he hit his peak he only lost to champions or interim champions, finishes almost every fight, exciting as hell, one of the best resumes in all of MMA, but never won the title. I don't care that Conor is a Two-Division Champ, Dustin is by far the greater fighter in the all time rankings to me, even if he never wins UFC Gold.

And unfortunately LW is STACKED with elite grapplers. Khabib (retired now but Dustins era) Oliviera, Arman Tsarukyan, Gamrot, Moicano, BSD. Even Chandler, who isn't a great all-round grappler but is a high level wrestler and super explosive.
Dustin and Justin are the best guys in lightweight along with Tony who never became a champion. But I think Dustin's resume is insane if you look at the guys he beat.
I think Poirier suffers from the same thing as Donald Cerrone, just a step up. Poirier is an amazing championship-caliber fighter, but it feels like when the undisputed belt is on the line, Poirier will look great, but just can’t deliver.

That's the thing about the top lightweight guys for a while now is that they are all very close to each other and could easily become the champion if the other dudes were only a lil bit less in skill.
Based on popularity alone I think Dustin Vs Islam makes a lot of sense. Not only is the timing right but I think a lot of people would tune in ($$$) to that fight. Obviously Islam would be a massive favorite but giving Dustin the chance to retire after a championship match (win or lose) would show him the respect he deserves since he has sacrificed so much for the sport. I think a similar argument can be made for Charles but he has already signed up for a clash against Arman. Sometimes it's not about which fighters deserve it. Sometimes it's about what makes a good story. Everyone loves an underdog. Like it or not. The Diamond Vs The Champ makes for a great story.

Dustin becoming champ in the featherwight is kinda debateful,tbh . I agree that he could've beaten Aldo, but i don't know how he would've fared against Volk and Max. Max put up a pretty good fight against Dustin despite fighting in a different weight class and he still outstroke Poirier in most rounds. And Volk needs no introductions.
