  • The reason I like to demo this kind of cross grain boxes is beacuse on this little gem you have all the cuts happening on cross grain work but on smaller scale and with more finess...
    Enjoy

    The lines of bowl and lid are nice exercise , simple lines
    Your choice of black walnut for knob was perfect
    The simple plum shape low knob is spot on
    So many turners make tall thin showy finials
    This knob will now be added to a small trinket box
    that I have been making for my wife also from maple with wax finish

    Most youtube turners say never use a spindle gouge on side grain work. Only use them on spindle end grain work. Quite amazed at what you do. 👍🏻

      I would say that most people don't know the differents between spindle gouge which I use or my mentor or spindle roughing gouge with big deep flute in U shape....that is the tool to avoid using on cross grain work.... But I can see how turners get mistaken by the two but this regular spindle gouge is great tool for cross grain work.... Thank you sir for watching and comment 😀 I really appriciate that

    Hi Tomislav. I have just started turning. I was having trouble presenting a gouge to the wood. I really had trouble hollowing lidded bowls.bmy chisels weren't cutting. I had all my tools sharp. I watched your video on lidded bowls. I watched it over and over and over until I realized how you start your cuts and how you follow thru with your shear push cuts . My knowledge tripled. It was a giant leap in my abilities. Thank you so much my friend

    Your simplistic approach to thing’s others would panic over is amazing 🤩 and yes I said the same word bulbous I normally put the knob back in the chuck and turned the same one down, but what ever rocks your boat 😂 again you might not know but the amount of knowledge you have just past on ( because you just do it and take it for granted ) is brilliant. Thanks Tomislav, I’ll buy you another beer when I pass your workshop 😂

    Hi Tomislav, I made a very similar box for my daughter recently. I enjoyed your recent videos about scrapers, as a result I converted an old skew, 12mm x 8mm thick, to a negative rake scraper. I have been surprised by how well it worked and how useful it is. Once again, Thank You.

    That is a beautiful piece, the shape is really nice. ... the beads inside the lid take decorating the lid to a whole new level. I really like your exposition of your thoughts as you work through the design when you are doing these videos; it really helps give ideas of design considerations for projects. When you hollowed the inside of the base to make a curved bottom, what was the reason for choosing to use a square end scraper rather than a round nose scraper to get the curve?

    Very nice box / bowl. When I use a set diameter drill bit, for the mortice for the knob, etc. I have a cheap set of spanners ( wrenches), which corresponds to the drill bit and saves a little bit set up messing around to get the right measurement. I learnt this trick from Mike Peace quite a few years ago.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  Před měsícem

      Its hard to help without visuals, but what usually happens is too much pressure against the wood and it wants to push gouge away....try finding that spot that push the gouge away and just hold the gouge and let the wood go over the gouge, without forsing anything.... Once you cut away that uneven surface you will be able to continue on....

      Spindle gouges are cheaper,in my hands they work close to bowl gouge, I just like using them and when I started out we could not buy bowl gouge here in Croatia, so tradicionally cross grain work was done using continental gouges....hope that make sense ☺️

      @@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thank you! I love your content. My early instructors forbid the use of spindle gouges Fot hollowing bowls due to the wider flute and catches and the spindle gouges have tangs typically not continuous rod of HSS like a bowl gouges!
