- In this woodturning video I turn a piece of Walnut that had some Red Cedar growing through it. I have never seen anything like this turned before!
I wanted to do a live edge with live edge like @Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop does with a lot of his pieces.

I admit Phil Anderson is one of my hero's of natural turned timber as well G
I agree, Gary! His work is beautiful!
Great save of a one of a kind piece. I have never seen one tree growing through another. Thanks
Thank you, Garth! I appreciate the feedback!
Great one of a kind piece!!! And yes, i think Phil is an inspiration to all of us turners!!
Thank you kindly! I truly appreciate his inspiration.
Mów this bowl IS awesome!!!!!
Thank you for the feedback! I am glad you enjoyed it!
great piece Double D one of a kind
Thank you, Sid! I thought so too!
So well done. Beautiful.
Thank you, Denny! I appreciate that!
Out standing work ,cheers from New Zealand
Thank you, Selwyn! I appreciate the feedback, and cheers from the USA!
Definitely one of a kind. And nice shout out for Phil. Good use for the black C.A. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, Valerie! Always like to give credit from where and whom I draw inspiration!
very interesting piece and a great job of turning.
Thank you, Jimmy! I appreciate that feedback!
Looks fantastic great job
Thank you, Mike! I appreciate the feedback!
“Chunkage”- love that term!
Yeah, not sure where that came from, but made me laugh a little myself!

Certainly will now follow you
Lovely unusual piece of combined wood
Beautifully delivered
✔️
Thank you, Nicholas, and welcome to my little corner! I appreciate the feedback!
Oh my this piece is so cool with red cedar being swallowed by walnut!! I love it ❤ wish I could buy Brads products here in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦. I love matted and shiny finishes just depends on how the piece speaks to me.
Thabk you for the feedback, Shannon! I appreciate the kind words and support! I am hoping that down the road he can offer it in Canada, but we will have to see!
The contrast of colors between the two species is great. Nice work.
Thanks for the feedback, Walt! I appreciate that!
Beautiful piece. I too watch Phil so love the nod to him by doing this piece. Great job.
Thank you, Vicki! I appreciate that feedback, and always try to give credit to where I get inspiration from.
Really nice, Daniel. If I was younger, I'd try to grow something like that.
Bill
Thanks, Bill! I would do the same!
It's a very nice looking piece, DD. I'll bet Phil likes it too.
Thank younfor the kind words! I hope he would appreciate it!
You did Phill proud very great job. The closest I came to is a cedar tree growing in a crotch of a Ash tree. The roots grew into the Ash.
That's awesome, Bum! Thanks for the feedback!
I must say, Daniel, that is one of the most visually stunning pieces of walnut I have seen turned. You did it proud! Thanks!
Thank you very much! I appreciate that!
That's a real beauty. Great job!👍👍Phil will be pleased.
Thank you! He is a big inspiration for sure!
This is a great piece. Ive seen 2 species grown into each other before, but not turned. I have turned a piece that the tree grew around a vine. As I remember the finished product was hard to differentiate between the 2 since both were relatively light in color. The red in your cedar contrasts nicely with the walnut. Well done my friend.
Thank you, Doug! I was VERY happy it stuck together, and I agree with that contrast! I appreciate you!
Cricky DD that's bloody ripper love the natural edge and the red cedar running through it. Both have fantastic grain pattern, I love phills work too. If you want to see some very different turning, ( its only a suggestion ) Richard west woodturing the impossible hollower form. Keep the dream alive son. Aussie Aussie Aussie GDAY MATE from brisbane Australia 33 degrees Celsius today
Thank you, Ernie! Richard West does some amazing stuff for sure! I appreciate the feedback!
Great piece, definitely a rarity. I personally prefer a matte finish but most customers prefer a glossy finish. So, pieces I have for sale are usually glossy.
Thanks for the feedback! Matte is my personal choice unless color is involved.
It's a very attractive piece, thank you. I've watched a lot of Phil. Graham UK
Thanks, Graham! He is an amazing turner!
Superbe pièce. 👍👍
Thank you very much!
Most people would have just thrown this piece in the firewood pile. You saw the potential and "turned" it into a beautiful piece. Great work! I'll be looking closer at pieces I may otherwise discard.
Thanks, Jim! I agree, there is beauty in all sorts of places!
Daniel
That is amazing. Have witnessed anything like it.
Agree Phil is a great inspiration to us all.
Keep at it.
John
Thank you, John! I hadn't either. And Phil is amazing!
That piece is out of this world gorgeous.
Thank you, Jess! I thought it was pretty amazing as well!
From one Kansas turner to another, amazing work. Keep it up.
Thank you for that! I always appreciate finding more turners from this area!!!
Awesome piece, DD! Never seen anything like it turned, but I have seen a couple of instances where a tree has grown around a branch from a neighboring tree.
Thank you, Dana! That would be interesting to see!
Heck yeah. That is an awesome find and it is great that it had a wonderful person to turn it. Great work!
Thank you, Clyde! That means a lot!!!
Wow - what an incredible find with the two woods interlaced! Your vision and talent to turn that into a masterpiece is inspiring. This piece is an award winner.
Thank you, Mark! I appreciate you support and feedback!
Nice
Thank you, Gordon!
Gorgeous! The cedar on the inside makes it really cool! ❤️mom
Thanks Mom! I agree with the contrast!
❤oh my goodness, that's lovely and unique. What a treasure! How rare is that for the trees to have grown around each other? ❤
Thanks for the kind words! I have seen some grow together, but it VERY infrequent. I have never seen one turned before!
Normally I like a gloss or semi- gloss finish, But the matt finish on this piece really makes it pop.
Thank you, Thomas! I appreciate your perspective and the feedback!
The top reminds me of a surprised sloth. Never seen two woods in one like that though
LOL, I can kind of see that! Thanks for the feedback!
That’s a stunning hollow form mate! 👏🏼 🙌
Thank you very much! Tha means a lot to me!
I prefer a smooth but matt finish. My goto so far is Howard’s Feed-n-wax. I wipe it on, then buff it up with a cloth rag that’s been used before for the same reason. I guess I sorta emulate Richard Raffan.
Nice job on one of the oddest pieces of wood I’ve ever seen!
Thanks for the feedback, Stuart! Glad you liked it, and I like Howard's too!
Very nice. I’ve used Brad’s Tung Honey on several projects and all looked great. I like the mat finish on certain forms and the gloss on others. Hope to put a couple coats of the Tung Honey on next project and then buff it to to if I can increase the sheen.
Excellent, and thank you for the feedback!!
Really impressed with the way that turned out looks good
Thank you, Uncle Rob! I appreciate the feedback!
Have not witnessed any thing like it......
Agreed!
Very cool piece this week Daniel. I love the pops of red!
Thanks, John! I agree, that red really stands out!!!
I really enjoy and appreciate videos like your where we are talked to. Told what's going on. Describe what you're doing. Thanks.
Thanks, Denny! I enjoy that as well, because if I can help someone out a little with their process or get feedback on something I can improve, it makes us all a little bit better!!!
Truly incredible piece man. What a find. Great job keeping it together.
Thanks, Clint! I was worried about it, but SUPER glad it came to fruition!
Absolutely beautiful piece. I love the way you support other turners, Phil, Todd and Brad. I prefer the mat finish and usually use the Farmers Feed and Wax, but since you have a discount code for Brads, I may have to order some of his Tongue Honey.
Thank you, Jean! I appreciate the feedback! We all as makers need to support each other!
DD the other thing I have seen was when someone turned a piece of wood that had been 'grafted ' to another type of wood i.e. fruit trees are done that way. Nice job I always try to find the unique pieces.
Thanks for the info! I have not seen that, so I'll have to look for those!
Very unique and beautiful Daniel hang on to that one
Thank you, Tim! I'll definitely think about that!
Great looking chunk of wood. Well done! 😊
Thank you very much! I was HOPING it would turn out the way I envisioned it to be!
Awesome piece, Daniel! Truly beautiful, my friend. I've not seen anything like this either.
Thanks, Billy! So interesting and unique, for sure!!!
Lovely piece of work sir. Nice to give Phil Anderson a shout out, his work is awesome. What did you use for the hollowing out couldnt make out the tool on the video, was it a swan neck carbide? Will definitely subscribeto your channel.
Thank you very much, Colin! I used a combination of tools. I have a hook-neck carbide I got from Rockler, I used the Easy Wood Tools Pro Hollower 1, and I use the Elbo Hollower from Tim Yoder. I primarily used the hook and the Pro hollower 1 for this piece.
Great video. How long did you leave it in the pressure pot? Did I miss that info in the video?
There is no resin in this piece, so there wany any need for a pressure pot. Thanks for watching!
Is Starbond CA glue any better than any other regular superglue available in the hardware store?
I think so. It seems to cure a little faster and doesn't have QUITE as acrid of a smell to me.
Hello, I just subscribed to you and already have a question. What is the brand of lathe are you turning on? I'm changing careers do to cancer and an amputation so my delta lathe is going to be outgrown soon and my new lathe I want to have plenty of growing room. Thanks for any help you can be.
Frankie
Thanks Frankie, and Welcome! Glad you're sticking with the turning for sure! I upgraded to the Rikon 70-3040. I have a video where I show all the details and features it has, and a couple of the things I don't like about it.
daniel i lvoe the hollowform but the wood is kinda weird idk how it grows like that anywho man u take care of yourself ok? just remember, God loves u, God bless. Chris
Thanks, Chris. Nature has its own way, sometimes!
@@TournageDubois how would i get my hands on a piece like that!? ha! take care man. Chris
@chriswalters5936 I am not sure. I have a tree guy that gives me stuff from time to time, so that's where this came from.
@@TournageDubois cool ok. chris
Gorgeous! Love the cedar on the inside! Mom
1st😂😂
THAT'S the Huw we all love!
Yep. He's back.
