Blows my mind how people can make games this fast that are not only functional, but creative and aesthetically pleasing.
Katze it’s not that hard. I only used 8 hours of the 48
Experience. Using a built in engine like Unity is incredibly fast on what you can do if you know what you're doing.
not so much about it being hard but rather how the possibilities led to this. I remember when games were a mess to create, and took years to finish, even when they were quite simple. now people can just pop out an interactive, smart, and chunky pastime in a few hours.
Makes you wonder what the fuck some companies are doing with their lives.
Trying to sustain hundreds if not thousands of peoples monetary needs while still needing to profit, that's what they're doing.
Mark Brown saying “Good on you, SuperTry” reminded me that quitting my job to make games was totally worth it.
Yours was my brother's favorite game in the jam. Glad to see you in the top 20 with us :D
He's our lead programmer, so he loves this type of stuff. I found it very impressive myself, although I'm terrible at it lol.
It is actually a crazy good applied game (aka serious game). This is fantastic for teaching kids the basics of programming in a fun way, yet stands on its own as a puzzle-esque game as well.
Holy Moly I knew I heard supertry before! It's snorkle
Kevin Cole your game looks awesome!
I never thought i would ever see an educational game about Super Mario 64 speedrunning categories.
That one's mine! :D I wouldn't call it educational, but I'm so happy Mark liked it!
an A press is an A press, you can't say it's only half.
Roberto, you haven't played the game right? So how do you know that? Half an A press is pressing they key down but not releasing it or vice versa, since 1 A press is down and up together.
WELL, "Roberto De Gasperi..."
Q You could explain it like that, but first we're going to have to talk about *parallel universes*.
I can't believe it, but our game made it! Glad to see "In Space, No-One Can Hear You Jump" get this far. :')
It seems a lot like Dandara (search on steam)
Fantastic name! And the game looks fun too. :)
I had the same game idea, and I'm so glad to see it fleshed out this well. I don't yet have the skills to make anything this good, but I really hope you decide to run with this game and publish it. Best of luck to you.
Thanks! And I couldn't have done it without my team. Can I get a link to your version?
Yeah, we've gotten a lot of comparisons to Dandara, although it wasn't a direct inspiration. I think the major difference though is that our game has stuff for navigation between jumps (the attracters and repellers) and is much more slow-paced.
I'm frankly super chuffed my dumb flame game got featured!
You mean the game that got rated "almost Nintendo like" in it's focus on a mechanic? That's about the highest accolade you can get from Mark. Well done.
That's the one! I'm grabbing that quote and running with it before he changes his mind.
It looks really clever - nice work!
@@Nosgoroth "...Nintendo like in its focus on a mechanic"
-Mark Brown
Please finish this game!
It would be cool if you'd make a "where are they now" video after some time to see if any of the games got developed further after the jam
Hey, was on cool math games a few months ago and the robot game if else is on there
**cough** Baldi's Basics **cough**
It's really amazing that a game like Hollow Knight can come out of a game jam, so I'd be interested to see other game jam success stories :>
Almost choked to death at 4:26. Thanks a bunch for hosting this, Mark. It sure was one heck of a jam.
You got a neat concept there ;)
Teriyaki Phantom the first 3 puzzle that actually seems interesting.
I also really love the graphics
Did you ever make a full game of this? I couldn't find anything online
@@djeieakekseki2058 he didnt make the 3 puzzle man he made the one after
Okay but the pongout one is legitimately the most clever idea I've seen in a while
what goes up is in this! mark is talking about our game!! this is a dream come true for us ;-;
Congrats bro!
7:09
Wow, serponge also makes some of the best geometry dash levels. He pushes the game to it's limits by making games within the game.
Yeah, I really didn't expect to see him in a game jam
@@trillygot656 Me either
@@trillygot656 I mean, he makes games in Gd. You wouldn't expect it, but you would understand it
@@trillygot656 me neithee
The level of creativity in these game jams is always amazing
I used to do 48 hour film contests back before I started working professionally, that was crazy enough, but making an entire game in 48 hours??? Respect! Y'all are badass!
That little robot with the if/then commands is honestly the best indie game idea I've heard in a long time.
Human resources?
Baba is you? It is a similar concept
Hey, my game is showed at 0:53 ! Congratz to everyone who participated :)
Hey, nicely done! Getting up there at all is super impressive, haha. I hadn't ever made a game before, but I had a blast and was so excited that I had something to turn in! Have you made games before? Yours looks just a liiittle more polished than mine ;)
Thanks! Congrats to you too! My game showed up at 6:18 I'll go check out yours!
Actually, can I get a link to it?
Here it is : lucas-delvallet.itch.io/rebel-snake
@Hyrum I've already made games in the past, and several game jam, so I have a little experience :)
Hey man, I just wanted to say how awesome I think your videos are. I've been following you for a few months now and I've seen nearly all your videos. It's clear how passionate you are about games and it's really opened my eyes about some of the mechanics of them.
Thank you dude, really love your videos
Cheers! Thanks for watching!
I'm really late but thanks for making this jam! I always wanted to participate in a jam and this made it possible! Was lots of fun to finally create a game and I'm happy I got in the video :)
woah its serponge
the gd guy
Shooter where you shoot in sync with a beat?
Amazing.
Say song is 5min long, you have a time limit for level. Put option to insert your own music and its amazing
I'd just put bassboosted We are number one and shoot all the time
Check out Crypt Of The Necrodancer if you haven't already
BFG division
That’s it
Insert 10hours of Nyan Cat.
Beat saber
So glad Allocation made the cut. The puzzle element of arranging healing rooms and minimizing hard rooms was so engaging. There is so much potential for depth like If you had to connect a sequence of key and boss rooms!
Im very happy that you showed a bit of my game at 0:17 :)
So many awesome games, congrats everyone :)
Holy crap, a lot of people had such awesome and interesting ideas. Great work to everyone involved!
We're thrilled you enjoyed Fresh Merchandise!
I have seen other youtubers hosting game jams, none take the time to show/off analyse this many games and still manage to make it a very digestible video, good job !
PS: I considered entering but I wasn't very inspired...
It was an incredibly hard theme, that's for certain. But I kind of liked it for that (eventually). After several hours of smashing my head against the wall I actually came up with an idea that I never would have thought of otherwise, and it's one I think I'd like to try publishing someday.
What is it ?
@@TheGameLecturer you'll know once he publishes it
7:09 That guy is a GD legend!
YEAH! I noticed the same thing
🤮

So Space Command 1980 is sort of like Typing of the Dead except it's a schmup.
And Fireflies reminds me a lot of that one chase scene in the first Ori game, combined with that directional fling power he gets later on.
exactly
You mean the Ginso tree with Bash?
Gregory Hermie Petrola, exactly. It's not like Typing of the Dead. It's more about thinking than about typing. There was actually a game that better elaborated on that concept. Can't remember its name, but in that game you had to control multiple drones exploring abandoned spaceships. You had multiple functions for each drone (customizable) and you were also controlling the ship's doors. That one was hella fun actually.
You're thinking of Duskers.
blueblimp, yeah, that's the one. Thanks.
This was seriously impressive! Thanks Mark and congratulations to everyone who participated and was featured
Looking at GameJams really reminds me why I love videogames so freaking much! They can be so imaginative. Game Design by its own is a really beautiful art.
This is one of the most inspirational videos I've seen in a long time. Seeing all this genuine creativity on display, and marveling at the clever ideas & ingenuity in the design of these games that were made over the span of a weekend makes me truly appreciate how special & versatile gaming can be.
aw man, I can't wait to spend hours playing through some of these.
great work everyone! thank you!
This was a brilliant theme for a game jam. Probably the best I've ever heard of. Thanks for setting this up! Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to next year's jam :)
Thanks Mark for the Jam. It was both fun and educational for me, and well done top 20 game makers!
Really glad you showed Else Walker, that was my personal favorite of the bunch. I really hope the creator of it expands on it in the future.
Thanks so much for hosting! I had so much fun crunching and trying new ideas! Will definitely be back next year!
10:17 Dude, that’s an awesome idea.
Some truly creative ideas here. I can see loads of them being made into a full game with a little fleshing out.
This was very interesting. Astounding even. Hats off to those guys.
And hats off to you too, Mark. Great video like always! Thank you.
I can't help but wonder what else was hidden among these submitted hundreds of games.
That was a really fun weekend! I had an awesome time participating in the jam :)
Everyone else: *sees GameJam);*
Me: *sees Game jam sad winking face*
So glad that you brought up What Goes Up!! I only got the chance to play a few of the games but that was a definite standout.
These are SO incredible. So many talented designers out there just waiting for a chance
This was super fun! I'm so glad this happened again and that I got to participate!
Love your content man, plz never stop! Hi from Argentina
Else Walker may not be the most fun game but the (simplified) programming language is intriguing. I showed the game to my 12 year old nephew and he was able to know the basic programming and we had a fun discussion about the mechanic.
Show him Human resources if he's good with numbers
I had a blast watching you stream these, and it was fun to see the ones I didn't check out in the stream.
This is what im waiting for all week!
That's awesome! The Metroidvania ones you covered in here were fantastic
my second ever game jam. I love how mark gives theme that inspire a variety of games unlike ludum dare themes I've seen recently
Soo awesome! I'm always amazed how much creativity and inventiveness people have. The notion about there're no new ideas were obviously imagined by people who don't look hard enough ) Thank you for what you're doing )
Congratulations for all developers here! GameJams are super fun to play
Thank you for mentioning the interactive fiction game without text, it made my day.
I am seriously amazed at some of the ideas. I also think Mark deserves some credit for choosing such brilliant theme.
Wow I love this, what a wonderful project
"In Space No One Can Hear You Jump" LOVE that title! (cool mechanics too)
Thanks for what you do Mark!
This is amazing! Binging your channel and learning about your game jams makes me want to sharpen my programming and try my hand next August
This is amazing, so much raw creativity!
I love all the effort and charm that's been put into these games, especially the 16 bit ones, fluid animation and solid gameplay with only 48 hours is something I thought would be difficult but all of these pulled them off and look like buyable indie titles already
So many genius entries in this one. Nice job, guys.
The Jam was a lot of fun, and the Theme was great. Im currently planning a small GameJam myself and we will definetly try to choose an more interesting Theme because of this Jam.
This is incredible.
I'm so inspired right now
those jams are always amasing.
Thanks for hosting! Even if my game was hot trash, it was still a fun experience!
this is so wholesome, bless you mark
I'm really glad to see that of the games I played, the 3 that I really thought deserved to "win" actually did make it into the top 20! I must give some of these others a try.
I’m a freshman computer science major right now and I’m seriously considering going into game design after watching this channels videos. I love GMTK
So many good games in your jam! Awesome!
I like rewatching these for some reason
Picking 20 games must have been hard, some amazing games on this list, and I know of at least three other games that were also fun and interesting. Anyway, participating was fun, I hope I'll have a bit more time to spend on the jam next year than I had this year, but the experience of finishing up a game and adding some polish was very educational. Thanks for this opportunity!
This was really really cool. I'm glad there's still plenty of room for creativity
Mark you are THE GUY to go to for any upcoming game developers who need help.
That's awesome! Giving creative people a challenge and seeing what they come up with yields some incredible results
If you're interested in these kind of things, there's hundreds of game jams like this every year. You could check out itch. io to play the games yourself.
@@milk_choc7889 thanks! I've been part of a couple 48 hour film festivals where teams are given a genre, a prop, and a line of dialog (i think) to incorporate. And also there was this art movement around town called Exquisite Corpse where artists would donate an unfinished piece and another artist would finish it. The creativity around all these things is amazing and inspiring!
I started typing my favorite ones from the video, but was typing so many of them that I gave up. So many great ones!
It was lots of fun to partecipate!
Mani can't wait to check some of these out!
Mark, I just started playing Darkest Dungeon, after your repeated recommendations of it. I'm super impressed by its presentation, can't believe it's an indie game!
this one of my favirote game jams! Cause in my opinion it forces game devs to challenge making games with limitations and working around them to build new forms of creativty!
Amazing, this is just amazing and humbling
Wow these are all very impressive!
Did anyone try an rpg type game where you level down instead of up? Or a power up based game where you lose mechanics the further you go?
I don't think such idea itself would make the game interesting, as games that rips your level off mid-way isn't super rare, and those additional challenges a game offers is kinda "you lost some mechanic and now deal with it". Both haven't been done in a gradual way though... But it's like, it's only good for story telling I think.
@@FlameRat_YehLon I agree that losing mechanics #feelsbadman . Now, starting off with all mechanics and all-powerful, and gradually having your powers become weaker in power (but otherwise remain unchanged) seems cool. Would make for some rather challenging endgame.
I don't believe anything like that was made for the jam, but here is a kickstarted game of the same premise. supertry.itch.io/projectmaiden
It happens at Warcraft 3, undead arthas start losing levels.
No I think you're right. Just an idea I had. Maybe give you like basic endgame traversal mechanics and take em away to make things harder or something. Like if in hollow knight you started out with everything and by the end all you could do was jump and slash.
Yay I’m happy else walker made it in! It was my favorite game of this jam!
7:08 Serponge? :OOO
So that's why he's so good at making games in GD.
A geometry dash related comment? No way PogChamp
🤮
Congrats to everyone making it to top 20. I ended up in the middle of the pack and learnt to better scope my project next time ;D See you guys in the next GMTK jam ;)
a lot of great art in these too!
Awesome games. Great job everyone.
I'm amazed, some of these games looks absolutely incredible. Some of these games should become bigger projects because they look extremely amazing
Wow. Very creative! Just subscribed.
7:09 So glad to see Serponge's name being mentioned, I haven't seem him do anything ever since quitting Geometry Dash..
That FireFlies game is just like that mechanic in Ori and the Blind Forest. I love it
Love them all, so many good ideas.
Wow, this Game Jam list is BLOWING MY MIND, WHY I'M NOT THINKING THOOSE IDEA?
In case anyone if wondering the game at 00:27 is called Nuggets II. Took me forever to figure out and find.
Suggestion: Please always place a title card with the game name for entries that don't make the Top 20
Thanks for Hosting and Rating these!
Camp Shepard actually looks like a lot of fun, going to give it a try now!
This actually kinda insane! love it :D
A text adventure with no text really takes the beans on this one, for me. Mad props to that idea
Heh. There's an Amiga game called Sleepwalker that features almost the exact same premise as this one, except there's still platforming done by the player. You control a dog trying to get a permanently sleepwalking kid safely through levels, blocking him from walking into enemies, kicking him across gaps and manipulating the environment to make a safe path.
I KNEW I had seen that game somewhere. Not in the amiga tho, probably in one of those emulators for old games.
Sleep Walker also seems very similar to Mario & Wario. In that game, you also control a character who helps another character who can't stop moving get to the goal.
Yeah, I though exactly the same when I saw that sleepwalking game. Didn't feel that innovative knowing Sleepwalker beforehand.
There's a cellphone game very similar too. i just can't remmenber de name.
There were few games with similar premise. I remember playing a flash game a long time ago, where you were a wizard conjuring sand to help sleepwalking character get somewhere.
I googled it up and it's called Sandman
2:19 thats a really amazing concept
Defective detective was really good. I loved the games from this jam.
These developers are greater than those work monotonically in a company.Their sense of creativity and enjoying what they do is absolutely fantastic
It's very humbling to see Do Unto Others on this list. Can't wait to work on it more!
There are some really clever ideas here. I'm going to roll out some ideas with that "X genre without Y mechanic" to see what I come up with. Some really EXCELLENT ideas there.
