Same, this is by far my favorite concept. It literally tells the player to keep going, and the big heroic goal is to take a shower and get out of bed. So fucking real ;-;

Normal perspective: you're a depressed human trying to get through life but struggling, but you love your pet and it helps you get through your day
Reversed role: you're a pet trying to make your owner happy so that you both get to live in harmony
I'm told I have "treatment resistant depression" and I also have three cats. I can't wait to play this game.
Immediately this topic made me think of the Reddit post of a game idea where you play as the NPC whose stuff keeps being looted by main characters, so you build up a fortress with supportive industries in order to protect your stuff, and in the process getting more stuff, and then you realize you are becoming the final boss.

I spent 48 hours working on an entry, pulled at least one all nighter to get about 100mb of pixel art sprites and an entire game coded in time, all for all my work to go to waste because the site crashed and I missed the deadline. Best game jam ever, and I’d do all of it again and not change a single thing. I don’t even want to play my game again, let alone finish everything I didn’t get done in the jam and upload an updated version to itch, but I’m proud of it, it’s the only game I’ve ever finished.

The one about the cat helping their depressed human hits home SO HARD for me. My cat Maya actually basically saved me from myself, once, when I was in a really dark place. Whoever came up with the idea for that one, bless their heart.

For real! I almost didn't participate myself. But I'm really glad I did, despite the fact I cursed myself all the way throughout for putting myself into such pressure 🤣
I was thinking about not doing it and my remote teammate lost interest when the theme was revealed - but I convinced them to still help out a bit and then do my very first jam. I ended #1897 but it was such a great experience and it blew my expectations. I'm so glad I entered. I was surprised to find that for the vast majority of the top 100 teams had very similar ideas to what we were brainstorming, and it was very encouraging that the primary differences between us and them seemed to only be skill, team size and preexisting code.

Absolutely wonderful game. We had essentially the same idea but decided against it for skill reasons - and I'm so happy someone not only did the idea but did it so incredibly well. I'm 100% sure that a lot of people would really enjoy a 30-60 minute game that expands on being a caring and helpful pet that helps a depressed owner through life, and your art style would fit very well, I think. Thanks for making it!

One Day Better made me cry for the first time in months. Not even playing it, just seeing it in this video. What an amazing concept that, from the looks of it, is extremely well executed
Going from watching GMTK videos not knowing anything about game design to actually being featured, even for a few seconds at 1:15 is making my head spin. So glad to have taken part in the jam this year 🤩

one of the devs of 'magnetism rally' here! it was my first time entering a big game jam that wasn't just for some school event so seeing that we managed to get top 100 is so insane!! thank you for playing our game and for your hard in rating these entries ! it was a wonderful experience and i'm so excited for next year : DD

Failure is a stepping stone to succeed. You have done much more than those who considered but didn't join the jam.
Now you clearly know that you need to work on your idea skills. There are plenty of videos, and you could even go through the previous themes for game jams (take ludum dare or weekly game jam) and try developing an idea for every topic for about 15 minutes.
Try different methods - mind mapping or chain of associations.
As I've told in my comment, I've failed three game jams before successfully finishing a game

Such an amazing experience! I commented on the last one saying one of my goals for this year was to submit a game. Glad to have been able to accomplish that goal. Can't wait for next year!

This was my first game jam and I had a great time participating! I did not place very well (not even top 1000) but I am just glad I finished something and everyone else should be as well. Great job to everyone who got featured!

One Day Better is one of the cutest and most heartwarming concepts I've seen in a while. It's magnificent!!!
13:33 Another reason the game Streamer Screamer is great is because it makes stream sniping fun without having to deal with the consequences of doing it to an actual streamer such as getting reported or kicked from the game/match for stream sniping. 3:28 The audio breaking also happens in Plants vs Zombies 2 when you have too many zombies on screen. This is most often seen in the really high endless stage levels and when you have a lot of zoybean pods spawning helpful tofu zombies.
FYI, your comment can easily be interpreted as if you truly desire to harm people IRL, but only stop yourself from doing so because you'd be judged for it. I hope you also mean that you're not doing it IRL because of the harm that it inflicts on other people.

@@Muskar2 I don’t do any stream sniping IRL because I find it’s not worth my time just to be on bad terms with the streamer. I of did do any though I would be a friendly stream sniper because I’ve noticed that doesn’t upset the streamers as much because you’re not trying to ruin their game.
@@elenadunn5686 I didn’t personally play it but, from videos I’ve watched about it, including this one, the thing I liked the most about the game is, even though I don’t do it myself because I find it to be a waste of time, it’s all the fun of stream sniping with none of the negative consequences.

i rly dont get it ngl, everyone is raving about this game but i doubt anyone has played it. with story games its impossible to really be a big fan unless you actually experience it. just comes off as classic "animals getting updooted cos we love them".

@@homeyworkey depends on your perspective. It didn't vibe with you, and that's fine. Streamer screamer didn't interest me at all, but I get why other people might be interested in it. One Day Better wasn't top 1 to me, but it was to my partner. One Day Better is clearly a lot more than just something with animals - I think it's about mental struggles, being supportive in a playful way, reminding you of the love you have for your pet(s) while also having an art style that I think is very close to mental struggles. There's no objective measure for winning this jam
(edit: I got # 211 in Creativity and # 414 overall!!! )I've been watching GMTK for years and this was my first game jam where I had the skill to finish a game! I had no idea the highs and lows would be so intense; the absolute high of finishing a *playable game*, and the crushing low of not being allowed to fix it lmao
My low was realizing 10 minutes before release that I completely forgot music and sfx. 😅
@@360dom360 One person realised - before the submissions actually ended but too late to fix it - that they had left a bullet using the Godot logo placeholder sprite.
I spent a like one or two hours implementing a leaderboard just to break it in the final build and not realizing it was broken until it was too late 🙃

@@derfl007 oh I did something similar, I wrote and recorded an entire scene of dialog with multiple characters where the story required mechanics I didn't know I wasn't going to be able to figure out 💀
One Day Better stood out as the only 2d game I’ve ever seen that truly hits you emotionally. Probably the best game made in the Gmtk game jam ever.

Being featured is a dream come true, this jam was a blast! Fantastic job to everyone who participated! I do plan on making an expanded version of Pause To Play with even crazier mechanics and lots of new levels so keep an eye out if you're interested!

This was my first ever game jam and my first ever proper game! I'm so excited to see everyone else's games.
Really impressive how creative all these games are, I think my favorite is the Princess reverse Vampire Survivors, I could see that expanded in so many ways.

I was hoping for an honorable mention, but my jaw dropped when I saw Princess Paladin as the first game you talked about. Thank you so much for hosting it was so much fun and the first jam I did where I slept at least 6 hours 😂
By far, the most interesting games in this jam are the ones where you play as a pet and must interact with the humans from the point of view of the animal. Developers, make more of these!
I can't believe I was able to actually finish a game for this jam! It's such a grind and a rush but you feel really good after.
I was laughing so hard at the Walkies dog zooming around dragging its owner and then right after comes One Day Better with its beatiful premise making me sob. God, I have to go hug my cats now.
Yeah, the pet themed ones were my favorites. Not just Walkies and One Day Better, but the attention seeking zoomies of Sneakerdoodle too. "You're truly the goodest of boys" sold that one for me.
I’m not a game developer, and I know next to nothing about coding, but I look forward to these jams every single year. The creativity and skill on show is totally unreal

I actually really like the concept of Streamer Screamer. It may seem similar to secret role type games like Among Us and Secret Neighbour, but being able to essentially see their reaction to you and having to control it so that you don’t go overboard is really cool.

@@elenadunn5686 I did download it and play it after watching this video. My favourite part was interacting with the streamer character.
Ran out of time to submit unfortunately but I was making a game like "ricochet kills", where a bullet launches from one location and bounces at angles off the wall to hit the targets. The twist was that the player didn't aim the bullet, but got to place walls in the arena to form a path to the goal.
By far, favorite game is "One day better," that shit is beautiful
Damn! Streamer Screamer is exactly the game I imagined after the slenderman craze died down. I called it "Being John Slender" as a reference to the movie "Being John Malkovich" and it was EXACTLY like the game jam game! Glad to see, that someone made that idea a reality :)

Man, I absolutely love seeing these. It's always such a breath of fresh air, we get really caught up in the familiar games we've all grown up on but the Game Jams always seem to bring so many new ideas. This one was especially great with the theme of role reversal, every entry was so different and refreshing, it really shows just how small of a box we stuff ourselves into, and what amazing results you can achieve when you step out of that tiny box! I can't wait to play more of these amazing games, everyone did such an amazing job again this year.

I had so much fun competing this year! It's been a while since I have done a GMTK jam, so it was nice to get back into it. Congratulations to everyone who submitted or even attempted to make a game!
I still can't believe how many great game designers there are out there! It's so inspiring to see all of these incredible ideas and various awesome art each year. Some day I'll make time to start making games myself and it's in my bucket list to participate in GMTK's game jam. Thanks for everything, Mark! Your content is greatly appreciated.

I almost quit halfway through this jam because I was unhappy with my idea, but I'm proud I finished it and ranked reasonably well :)

How can people pump out such good game in this little time? So much black magic.
My guess is:
1. Expertise: design, common features, project management
2. Team size: 2 + 2 = 5
3. Preparation: Pre-made functionalities, tools or other assets that speed up the process
@@Muskar2 nah, I didn't participate. I'm working on my game over a long period. I don't have the energy for such a marathon and am impressed by the people who can do that.
@@Lugmillord Sure, there's nothing wrong with prioritizing polished games. In my eyes, the jam isn't about being a marathon - it's just a break to do something with low stakes. For instance, some people don't sleep much during the jam but I slept normally and did things at my own pace - and I still got a lot out of it. I didn't get top 1000, but that wasn't my goal either. We're all from different backgrounds with different goals and interests and that's fine. That the jam doesn't fit a process you want to do, doesn't make you "slow".
@@Muskar2 I know, it's simply that we as validation-seeking humans can't help but compare ourselves with others. And that never ends well on social media.
@@Lugmillord As long as you're aware that it's impacting you negatively, you're probably going the right direction. For me, it helps giving context that comparing yourself doesn't help you reach any goal. It's only useful for a few things (like learning what other people's tricks are that you could use yourself) and then it's usually only when it's about something that is extremely similar - not things that are very different, like jam games and polished releases.
First game jam ever joined, first game ever made, and my game rating result is right about half of the entries number. What a great result for me, consider that before the jam, I didn't even think I could deliver a proper game in time, and consider all the problems I had while making the game, all the broken UI while putting the game on the web, since nearly everything is basically first time.
Overall, I'm so glad I decided to participate in this jam. I had a lot of fun and experience along the way. The part where we rate other participants' games is nice too, found some good concepts and creativities there. Would definitely joined the GMTK game jam again.
Wish I had a lifetime to play all these games. So many wonderful ideas!
Omg these are so good! I loved the support-role idea of princess paladin and the anti-depressant cat, and the one with the dog being chased is such a cute idea! And the monster using the stream to find the player, that's just awesome

I haven't played any of the games, just because I don't play much and my computer can't really handle it. But tell him to keep it up, he seems to have great skills already.

Bricker Breaks Free immediately reminds me of Carrion - which is one of my favorite "role reversed" games.
Ragdolf made me realize that What the Golf? is a game absolutely filled with role reversal experiences. You never know what you'll be controlling or using to achieve a goal.
But there are some incredible games here and I'm looking forward to seeing as many of them as possible fleshed out!
The theme for this jam was perfect for juicing the creativity out of people. Lots of clever and creative stuff. Nice work.

I will never get over not being able to finish. The fact that this jam is only ONCE A YEAR makes it so depressing if you miss it. We don't have many years in our lives. I tried really hard to make something cool. I was going to make a space ship game where you're the ship computer, had a lot of good ideas, but I could only work on it after midnight both nights, and still get up early in the morning. So i worked for 3 hours I think total.. yea didn't work out
I know it's not the same thing, but if you really want the experience (which is the most meaningful thing, I gather, from all the comments) just try it in a free weekend. Give yourself the same deadlines and give it your all! If you can't finish by then, at least you tried like all the others and still have the opportunity to finish and polish your game
@@milenamartins21 the problem is I still don't have much time now even after the jam. I keep telling myself I'm gonna just finish it post jam but with my family it's hard to commit so much time.
"Never [getting] over" it is very dramatic. For what it's worth, I think you should work on that - that's worth a lot of time investment for you and your family's sake. As for the game jam, I also sacrificed a lot of things and I had to make it up to my partner for prioritizing it. If it's not possible for you to commit meaningful time to it, then that's just how your situation is right now. Don't beat yourself up about it. If you really care about it, then do the preparations necessary to do it next time. Make it up for the people who take over your usual responsibilities, take a risk on the economic loss of losing 2+ workdays worth of productivity or whatever else is stopping you. It's just one opportunity of many. Use it in the way that fits your own goals. And don't forget - you can easily find a team so that the workload is much less. I found one in the comment section.

I already appreciated you hosting these, but after actually taking part in this year I just want to give a huge thanks. Having dipped my toes with this, I'm actually starting to learn all of the main mechanics behind game dev, and will start making some actual games.
Bricker Breaks Free looks really sick, Reversal Rooms is cool, and I was particularly happy to see Pause to Play, as I had a very similar idea upon hearing the theme but lacked the skill to actually participate. Congratulations to everyone who finished, and even those who didn't!
This was my first jam and I was also very excited to see that so many of the ideas we came up with doing brainstorming were basically most of the top 100 games. We talked about pets helping their owners, playing as support for main characters, being a supportive NPC in RPGs, being animals surviving humans, being a Pinball antagonist (our pick) etc. - and expecting a ton of platformers where you control the platforms, and arcade games with swapped enemy/player assets - all of which happened. It truly felt like we were channeling the essence of many game developers, but just with inadequate skill to make an outstanding one. Pretty awesome experience overall, and I'd encourage you to give it a go next year!
Some of the games, like Brick Breaker Free, I am astonished at the level of polish. I know it's a simple game, but the blocks have personality, there's screen shake, good animations, clean graphics, and in general a very high level of quality. And the idea to make reverse Snake a horror game, that's both genius and hilarious. Pause to Play was the last one I was stunned by creativity, seeing the camera zoom in while simultaneously acting as a platform moving up, the entire idea with his menu system is brilliant.

First time I ever did a game jam, none of the games here but really enjoyed making music for 4 different projects, was very frantic but also extremely fun to experiment composing music in styles I'd never done much of before. Can't wait to take part next year and hopefully get involved again!
