I look forward to these videos every year. What people manage to accomplish in such a short time is never short of mind blowing. So many creative ideas and beautiful art styles. Fantastic stuff.
these always make me inspired to try and make something of my own, just like ur videos :)
joel haves đ„°
Joe I am a huge fan! You got me into EbSynth, I would share my game with you but I gotta do a re-realest to get rid of a critical bug :(
Hi Joel
Love your stuff..
Couldn't have said it better myself Joel.
Not a game designer, but I really like thinking about the themes for the game jams. This time I had absolutely nothing.
The people making these games aren't just great at converting an idea into a game, their level of idea generation is absolutely insane.
Well, not all of the submissions are creative
i thought of a great concept after the jam was done: katamari damacy but you roll around as a prototype for an "nth dimensional slap-chop" so you're basically a ball of razor wire rolling around dicing vegetables
I was really excited to participate this year, and then I spent Friday in a 8 hour session of basically writers block, Saturday morning I had to step away for a bit, and then I just ended up doing other things and never did anything for the jam.
I had an idea I liked for a bit where itâs D&D but you play as the dice, controlling the outcomes to keep the players engaged. It fell apart as I tried to figure out specifics though, and even if I could get it to work, I think it would have been too ambitious for a game jam in order to be fun.
it's also a good thing to see that the picking/voting system makes those very creative games actually get visibility
I will admit that as soon as I came up with something I just went with it. Itâs not unique at all IMO (I personally played 5 other games with a very similar concept). And itâs honestly not that good of an idea, itâs super unintuitive and hard to grasp which doesnât work well for a puzzle game.
So happy GIMMIKO managed to get into the top 20!!! Prutte and I did our absolute best to make a fun game in such a short amount of time, and I'm glad it paid off!!! We're working on updating the game with some more content and to make it more pleasing to play if anyone's interested in the concept! Yatta GIMMIKO!!!!
Haven't played the game (yet), but from the clip alone, I must say I'm already impressed by your commitment to the theme - that makes it feel like a full-fledged, standalone game and not some one-off game-jam... gimmick. Dice aren't exactly the first thing one'd associate with Japanese folklore, but they definitely have a supernatural... side to them, so hey, it actually makes perfectly good sense. And even the title is pretty smart (and easy to remember), too :P
oh yeah, is that a 2hu? 0u0 lol
just asking...is the girl throwing dice all around reimu?
she started by using a giant orb to attack, who said she couldn't use a dice block either?
hahaha it's not meant to be pc98 reimu, but she's very similar yeah!
Woah. THANK YOU to everyone who played DIEmunition! It's an honour to be in the top 20 again this year. And congrats to all the other games who made it in the video! What a ride this jam has been! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Out of all the games in this list, I took one look at DIEmunituon and immediately wanted to play it.
@@stevoisiak Same!! whens steam release and more content :D
Your welcome! (I voted for this full marks :D)
i cant even move
Yours has been my favorite game so far :) I'm already itching for one... last... run...
I have no interest in being a game developer and I didnât submit to this game jam, but I still look forward to this video every year because I love seeing everyoneâs creativity and passion
Thatâs a very cool way to be, thanks for being supportive of this community!
Game jams are always so fascinating!
I love how I think "Ooohh, that's a great idea" at every single game in these videos
I am still in shock! This is the first Game Jam I've ever participated in, and to be featured in the top 20 video is insane! Thank you so much to the entire team for their hard work. And congratulations to all the other winners!!
I drew and animated the dragon in Fire and Dice, as well as the enemies.
You did so good!!! Congratulations!!!
Oh my gosh! That was you?! Hecka impressive stuff! I was honestly quite addicted to the game, and loved the art direct. Being the dragon in the game instead of defeating a dragon like normal made me very happy ^w^
Also the dragon is so cuteeee
The dragon looks great!! Love the art style
@@blue1584 thank you! I had a blast designing and animating them :)
Oh! Congratulations! đ€ I am honestly very happy seeing your game in here, as I am one of your voters for it; it definitely was one of the games I enjoyed the most, and it was a blast playing it! I wish you the best on your endeavors in life, really. đ

@4:07 aaaaaaa omg that's our game!! I can NOT believe we made it to the top 100 it was our first ever game!! And Mark was so kind to leave the music track playing in the background even tho it was just a short few seconds clip
Well done!
Ooo
Our team had a ton of fun making Jimmy Blitz and the Rocket Dice, we're so glad you enjoyed it boss!
The game is hilarious and absolutely bonkers!
Great job, guys!
Thank you very much for hosting this jam. This is the first game jam that I submitted to, and it was quite a learning experience. I'm hoping to participate in a few more jams in the future. I'm signed up for the WOWIE!!!! Game Jam, and I'll be on the lookout for some more underrated jams as well. To anyone who's interested, regardless of experience, I highly recommend you sign up for a game jam! There's plenty to pick from, and you'll learn a lot. There's really nothing to lose
I had the incredible disappointment of my game not being playable upon submission. Even so, what a wonderfully amazing experience, I wouldnât change a thing. PLEASE everyone try it regardless of your expertise
What did you use to make your game? As someone with zero coding experience, I have no idea where to start.
@@NewfiCheese I used Godot, which I think is a pretty good engine generally. Although if you have zero experience, I'd recommend you start with Scratch. It's very intuitive and you can learn a lot by just playing around with it. The learning process I'd recommend is to start by following a few tutorials, perhaps put your own spin on some of them, then use what you've learned to start making your own projects. I hope this helps you on your journey!
Exactly the same with me! I wish both of us good luck with WOWIE!!! Game Jam 4.0!

Absolutely delighted Critical. got a little clip in the video! Wouldn't have got into game dev without GMTK, this means a lot to me
Where They Fall looks really cool, that idea of having to learn from a book and then puzzle something out to use your "expertise" was really interesting in Strange Horticulture and I get a similar vibe from that. Going to have to check that one out.
definitely influenced by inscription too

I wish It will be exanded in more a strategic way where you are the seer of tribe and need to lead It to success like king of the dragon pass
I was just glad to have finished a game and participated. I worked alongside a friend through the night for 15 hours straight to make the submission 5 minutes before the deadline. Thanks to everyone who played my game. I'm amazed 50 people played it let alone anyone at all
I feel you, I worked both days of the jam so essentially every break I had and anytime I should have been asleep was spent making the game
@@ListenerGames I totally underestimated how hard the challenge was, it really is a marathon. Now I'm worried that marks going to call the game hot garbage when he reviews the Patreon game jam submissions hahaha
what game did you make?
@@BiggerR10 it's called escape, has a picture of a green cat, submission 1624396
I really like the theme "roll of the dice" because it shows that strategy is not only about planning everything - it is also about doing the best with what you have and trying to look for the best outcome within what was given to you
Those were some of my favorite ones. It's always exciting when the game goes "ok, here are your options for this turn/level/section, make the best of it!"
@@cupriferouscatalyst3708 totally. and the feeling of getting bad rng but still plan a way out and revert the situation in your favor is just amazing!
I am so happy that you played and picked my game Maces and Dices!
Hello. This is my first time participating in the GMTK Game Jam. I have been programming for two years, and wanted to put my knowledge to the test. While my game wasn't that good, thank you to whoever hosted the jam, the judges, and to whoever helped out! It was a great experience!
Mark, thank you very much for giving us this occasion to have fun, practice and share ideas. (I'm the maker of "the quest of the dice", the first clip that appears in the video).
This jam, combined with the other ones I've joined recently, teached me a lot about time management and game making in general: this time I tried to apply everything I learned in the past months and got an enormous ammount of positive feedback.
I want to thank everyone that played my game and took time to share their opinion on it, this kind of interaction is extremely precious, especially the reviews that point out the negative aspects of the game.
(btw "the quest of the dice" got 3rd overall and first in enjoyment)
So cool that out of 6000 games you're in the video as well as so high in the 'rankings' man, you should be very proud.
This was the first game jam that I actually submitted something. It was a blast, and a great way to get into actually making my own game. I'm excited for the next jam!
What's your game called? I'll play it.
Me 2! This is my first time entering a jam :D
Thanks for featuring our game at the start!
GG everyone, some of these games are suuper cute đ
I just love the way people manage to make something so imaginative with just one phrase and 48hrs, to all the devs in the jam: You're amazing.
I always like that Mark makes sure to show gameplay from other games in the jam that didn't make his top 20, It gives you an insight into what more people did in the jam even if he can't talk about them in detail
Participating in this Jam was the perfect thing to push me into a better workflow and learn new stuff. I had lots of fun, definetly will participate next year too!
The aesthetic of dice gets a little exhausting after a while; maybe themes which reference physical objects aren't the best? It feels like most of the games felt they needed to use a literal die to justify the theme, when it can be interpreted metaphorically as just the concept of randomness
I feel like thatâs more on the developers than the theme itself. Could just be me, though.
Sure, but I'm also amazed of the creative ways the theme was interpreted and how dice could fit in so many different genres of games!
@@djroscurro9859 well the thing is that since the theme was â roll of the dice â most of the developers were just thinking in games with diceâs so i feel like the reason of the amount of the authentic is a bit more on the theme than the developers .
@@razorback8300 Maybe it was just me projecting, but rather than thinking of a physical dice, I just thought of the concept of randomness. So⊠yeah itâs probably just me.
Also, I suppose itâs a theme for a reason so a specific aesthetic makes sense I would think.
@@djroscurro9859 You could argue that a good theme is one that inspires creativity. If submissions are more repetitive then that probably indicates the theme could've been better
20:57 - Nice to see the game I did voice work for got at least a second of screen time. Well done to everybody who took part in the jam!
Where They Fall looks heavily inspired by Inscryption and I'm all for that kind of stuff. Given that Hand of Fate is where I track the concept back to and that game was also fantastic.
Never had I even hoped that we could reach such a high spot with Rolling World!! Great job to everyone who participated!!
we were just hoping for top 1000 ^^
Thanks for hosting it, Mark!
This was the first game me and my colleagues did (except for the programmer, but for him it was the first group jam, so first times for everyone hehe). We managed to get to #2451, which is amazing for a first game :)
I loved being part of the community, rating games and giving/receiving feedbacks!
Where They Fall looks like such an interesting concept, I'd love to see a full game based on that idea.
There ain't no way so many people can build such great games in just 2 days. That's amazing. How do you all make it in time? So many people don't even have a team, they do everything themselves, how much skill does it take to do this?
Boils down to experience, being organised, keeping a small scope and recycling a lot.
Still I agree there are many impressive entries nonetheless.
I am looking forward to seeing if there were any more creative uses of the theme. In the games Mark was playing so far on his livestream there was a lot of repetition!
But amazing job everyone who participated! Well done!
Try my game it called dice king
I did one about a cat digging through trash and it has no dice but it's pretty rough, it's called escape
everybody did a good job.. except the guy who created diceketballđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
So stoked to not only be a part of this, but to have been featured in this video along with so many other amazing devs, artists, level designers, and musicians who have poured their hearts and souls into these absolutely gems of games. Congratulations to all of you!
"A great big dollop of randomness" - For some reason that made me laugh.
My favorite game of the jam: Birb Hike. Such an interesting idea!
One of the most difficult topics in this game jam! Congrats to everyone who were able to make a well-polished game!
Difficult and boring. Fair play to to the developers, but I have no interest in playing any of these games.
@@TheFearmoths This isnât a ratio
Such a joy to see that one of the games I helped with (DesIgn by CommittEe) got an honorable mention. Been wanting to work with Fish Mug Games for years now, and getting the opportunity was one of the greatest things. Thanks again for a great year, Mark!
Always amazes me how quickly you get this video made.

let's be real, it was a jam where *most of the games* fit the theme âRoll of the Diceâ
And the ones that didnât were some of the best
I saw a game that was just a pong
@@madnesspurple8454 yes but the ball was a dice you see
I saw just uno game on scratch
@@AndrewTaylorPhD I see no problem with that. The theme is intentionally vague. Only being aesthetically die-based seems completely legitimate to me.
Making a game for this yearâs game jam was the first time Iâve worked on a game-it was a chill and small team of me and three roommates. My main contributions were making visual assets as well as reminding the programmers on my team to keep it small, haha. The only experience I had working on games before was making a Renâpy adaptation of a fanfic, and closely following a guide to make a visual mod for Stardew Valley. So yeah, it was a very cool and invigorating experience, to make a working game with other people in such a short time. Itâs not very user-friendly, but I look forward to working on more small games in the future.
(The game is called Thunder Bolt if anyone is curious. Itâs a sokoban-like game with four-sided die where you try to line up working arithmetic problems. My visuals clash a bit with how intensely difficult the puzzles are, haha.)
18:25 This is a brilliant idea. It's a roll of the dice in as many ways as possible.
Agreed, great concept (and aesthetic!)
What amazes me, is that every single GMTK Game Jam produces games (in 48 hours) that are better than most triple A games these days. Most of which take years to make, have massive teams behind them, and a huge budget. It's incredible what a few passionate devs with a dream can create in such a short time. Thank you GMTK for another great game jam, these always inspire me immensely.
These are my favourite videos of the year.
Thank you so much for hosting this game jam! It was the first game jam I was a part of and I had a great time.
Also big thanks to the 12 people who downloaded my game, I didnt really expect anyone to play it so it really made me happy that some people did.
Thank you Mark for this incredible opportunity. My best friend and I made a game, spending the full weekend grinding out production. Unfortunately, when we submitted the game in the last couple of minutes, the entire build was corrupted and not playable. Iâd like to think we would end up in the top 100 ;) In any case I encourage anyone who is remotely thinking about it to sign up for next year or any other jams that come along, regardless of what you make itâs an amazing experience and teaches you so much about game design â€ïž
the d20 to show your top 20 was so smart, i only noticed it like 15 minutes in
IM SO GLAD MY FRIENDS' SUBMISSION MADE IT IN HERE OMG (it's number 11 in this video). I'm SO PROUD OF THEM
Ngl, i submitted to this game. Damn the theme was hard, being more free with the idea of the die is a sure winner in my book.
Congrats to everyone who participated!
And to Mark for making such a great event!
You know what they say: if you have an infinite number of game developers on an infinite number of computers, over the course of an infinite number of game jams they will eventually make a series of actually good games.
Thanks Mark! This was my third GMTK jam and I was absolutely JAZZED to get 187th in the Enjoyment category. I only had 18 ratings but I guess they liked it! If anyone's interested I have a behind the scenes video on my channel. See you all next year!
I want to point out, some of the best experimental indie games I've ever played were finished or even started after the end of a game jam. There's never a bad time to be inspired. It's never too late to try something.
wow this was amazing. this was my first ever jam and it was super awesome. i think im officially hooked on game dev. thank you for putting on such a high quality and large game jam. i can't wait for more!! i also really appreciate the random rating system to avoid certain games from rising to the top before the end of the rating period and the fact that we are required to rate a handful of random games before being able to rate any game. this was awesome. thank you for the awesome recaps as well.
thank you for hosting the jam! this was the first one I submitted to, and I had a blast making the game
Been watching all the devlogs over the last few days just waiting for this video!! There is so much good you do for the videogame community! I wish you every success Mark, have a good day/night and all the best to you and yours
thanks again for hosting such an amazing jam!! they're so good for learning about game Dev and testing new ideas. my entry this year did way better than my previous, despite me being pretty unhappy with it at the end of submission :) would have never come up with the idea otherwise, I'm now considering developing it further into a full title !
Oh my god, the innovations from those jam games, I am impressed! Thank you everyone , thank you Mark!
Thanks Mark for hosting this jam! Super stoked to be in the top 20, but I also learnt a lot through this jam as well.
Tbh I didn't expect to make it into the top 20, while I managed to get most of what I wanted into the game there was still stuff I didn't manage to add due to the time constraint (e.g. music, fix pixelated graphics, names on levels, more polish etc.). Add to that the fact that there were so many similar games this jam, and some of them were so much more polished than mine (and some added a mechanic or two), I thought that I would probably rank well but not make it into the top 100, let alone the top 20. I was glad to see that my level design and simplicity eventually won out, and was frankly surprised to see that so many people like my graphics, given that in past jams this was usually a weakness for me. Thanks again to you Mark for picking my game, I couldn't have been happier. And for putting in so much work to host this jam for us, I'm sure many of us, myself included, enjoyed the experience.
with ahdhd, i find not having enough time to figure out whats going on in a puzzle exponentially more unfun that having enough time to cause paralysis. i recognize tho that i dont represent all players. and that, anxiety of that type can be a real hell for other players
That's why more options are better, but make timers the default
I have the same too! And i think Mark already gave a good solution on a video he made about xcom 2 and mario +rabbids. Basically, don't give a time _limit,_ but give a _prize_ if you're extra fast. Maybe an extra die in this case
(also yes, long live accessibility options, i just always forget they exist)
I was wondering if any of the games featured in this series ever made a full commercial realease. Some of the ideas are really great for some quick fun mobile gaming.
I know factori did, from a couple years back

Congrats to everyone who successfully submitted a game!
This was my first submission ever, working with some friends and we're just glad to have made a completeable game in that tight of a window (especially because no one besides me had game dev experience!), as janky as some things may have been.
For us it sparked a idea we want to continue working on for a full polished game and we learned A LOT about working on games in tight time constraints (also that pushing to the wrong github branch is very devastating lmao), very happy to have been part of it!
