Not a game designer, but I really like thinking about the themes for the game jams. This time I had absolutely nothing.
The people making these games aren't just great at converting an idea into a game, their level of idea generation is absolutely insane.

I was really excited to participate this year, and then I spent Friday in a 8 hour session of basically writers block, Saturday morning I had to step away for a bit, and then I just ended up doing other things and never did anything for the jam.
I had an idea I liked for a bit where it’s D&D but you play as the dice, controlling the outcomes to keep the players engaged. It fell apart as I tried to figure out specifics though, and even if I could get it to work, I think it would have been too ambitious for a game jam in order to be fun.

I will admit that as soon as I came up with something I just went with it. It’s not unique at all IMO (I personally played 5 other games with a very similar concept). And it’s honestly not that good of an idea, it’s super unintuitive and hard to grasp which doesn’t work well for a puzzle game.

Haven't played the game (yet), but from the clip alone, I must say I'm already impressed by your commitment to the theme - that makes it feel like a full-fledged, standalone game and not some one-off game-jam... gimmick. Dice aren't exactly the first thing one'd associate with Japanese folklore, but they definitely have a supernatural... side to them, so hey, it actually makes perfectly good sense. And even the title is pretty smart (and easy to remember), too :P

The aesthetic of dice gets a little exhausting after a while; maybe themes which reference physical objects aren't the best? It feels like most of the games felt they needed to use a literal die to justify the theme, when it can be interpreted metaphorically as just the concept of randomness

Making a game for this year’s game jam was the first time I’ve worked on a game-it was a chill and small team of me and three roommates. My main contributions were making visual assets as well as reminding the programmers on my team to keep it small, haha. The only experience I had working on games before was making a Ren’py adaptation of a fanfic, and closely following a guide to make a visual mod for Stardew Valley. So yeah, it was a very cool and invigorating experience, to make a working game with other people in such a short time. It’s not very user-friendly, but I look forward to working on more small games in the future.
(The game is called Thunder Bolt if anyone is curious. It’s a sokoban-like game with four-sided die where you try to line up working arithmetic problems. My visuals clash a bit with how intensely difficult the puzzles are, haha.)

What amazes me, is that every single GMTK Game Jam produces games (in 48 hours) that are better than most triple A games these days. Most of which take years to make, have massive teams behind them, and a huge budget. It's incredible what a few passionate devs with a dream can create in such a short time. Thank you GMTK for another great game jam, these always inspire me immensely.

Thanks Mark for hosting this jam! Super stoked to be in the top 20, but I also learnt a lot through this jam as well.
Tbh I didn't expect to make it into the top 20, while I managed to get most of what I wanted into the game there was still stuff I didn't manage to add due to the time constraint (e.g. music, fix pixelated graphics, names on levels, more polish etc.). Add to that the fact that there were so many similar games this jam, and some of them were so much more polished than mine (and some added a mechanic or two), I thought that I would probably rank well but not make it into the top 100, let alone the top 20. I was glad to see that my level design and simplicity eventually won out, and was frankly surprised to see that so many people like my graphics, given that in past jams this was usually a weakness for me. Thanks again to you Mark for picking my game, I couldn't have been happier. And for putting in so much work to host this jam for us, I'm sure many of us, myself included, enjoyed the experience.
