Listening to him speak about a Jew going into the Muslim Quarter and an Arab going into the Jewish Quarter makes me think about cities in the U.S. That same example could apply to Chicago, which is very segregated. There is much fear amongst people in Chicago to go into neighborhoods where people are of a different color or ethnic origin. That is the only way to break the fear, and in some cases, hate, that exists amongst Chicagoans.

Quick to assume that “Palestine free…River to the sea,” means “kill all the Jews.”
For some, including some Jews, even some Israelis, it just means all the (innocent) Palestinians have the same freedoms throughout the land as (innocent) Israelis. Whether 1 state or 2, but allowing the Jewish state.
For some-including some conservative Jews, liberal Jews, and Israeli intellectuals-that a Jewish state is wrong and incompatible with justice. Palestinians would have right of return, and some Jews would lose land but not citizenship, human rights, or their lives. That’s better than Palestinians get, and it’s not genocide.
And then a tiny % actually mean that all the Jews would be either forcibly expelled or killed. It’s not hard to find an Israeli Jew that wants exactly such ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. Netanyahu and his gov’t are well documented calling for it.

Actually, that is not a bad idea. With today's technology (Zoom, etc) it would be easy to form discussion groups world-wide, so you can learn about other cultures. That is one of the main reasons that I like to follow these lectures, is to see the response of the international students.
At least, you could become a little more educated. Is it as good as being there? No, of course not. But I believe that a lot of people could certainly become more educated, via a well thought out exchange. This seems like a perfect opportunity to contact a university in another country and do a sort of "virtual exchange student" program.
Of course, most people (students) are not really motivated to do something like that on their own. However, it is certainly a do-able task, that would be worthwhile. Maybe a good task for graduate studies.

Thank you for an interesting video. However, I'd like to offer a different perspective on one point you mentioned regarding anti-Semitism in the Christian community. In my experience, the situation in American Christian circles is quite the opposite. American Christians are generally very supportive of Israel and the Jewish people. For instance, it's common in Christian churches to pray specifically for Israel during times of conflict. While there are certainly anti-Semitic individuals within the Christian community, my experience suggests that this is an anomaly in the present day.

Sadly there is a lot of antisemitism in Christian circles. This started with the Catholic church, unfortunately. The Catholic Church believes that the church has replaced The Jews and God’s promises to Israel and The Jews are now meant for The Church and not the Jews. It’s very sad. I’ve been called a heretic and Judaizer by other Catholics for supporting Israel and the Jews. Many protestant churches still teach this twisting of the truth started by the Catholic church, replacement theology. I am a Messianic and have spent time in both Messianic Synagogues and Christian churches and I personally left two different churches that were teaching this replacement theology. Really appreciate your open-mindedness. A few comments:
    * Some selection-bias in speaking to those who'd like to speak with you, paired with the difference between an open society, in which people can freely criticize their gov't (like US, or IL), and a closed society (like the Gaza Strip). Also important to recall that, worse than having the guns, in Gaza Strip & West Bank, the extremists control much of the education, which is reflected in sky-high anti-Jewish sentiment (see ADL global antisemitism polling).
    * Hamas primarily use non-US weapons (ex Kalashnikov), much of them supplied by Iran (and even N Korea). Israel primarily uses Western- or indigenously-produced weapons.
    * When you say 'antisemitism doesn't emerge out of Islam', that seems unclear: there is Jew-hatred to be found in both the Christian & Muslim theologies. There is today less tolerance for Jewish people in most Muslim societies, part of the reason there are almost no Jewish communities left in those countries (though there are some positive trends, ie Abraham Accords). It is also true that in points in history, there was greater tolerance in some Muslim societies.

LOL when I pointed out that Prof Sam by basing his view of the attitudes of the young in Israel and Palestine towards peace, based solely on his personal experience, both in the M. East and the US, is not being academic, and also runs counter to recent surveys/polling that show the opposite, my post disappears! In 2020, the Alliance for Middle East Peace (ALLMEP) and USIP commissioned a study of Israeli and Palestinian youth, ages 15-21. It showed that among both Israelis and Palestinians, just about half on each side believed that a political resolution can actually bring peace. But by a clear majority, each side believed that violence is the only or best way to achieve concessions from the other side. It also noted the rising number of youthful militia groups, especially in Palestine connected neither to Hamas or Fatah and very radical! Not peaceful IMO, but then the prof probably only related to well educated people as he is a prof after all!

Ok, on this, I am much older than most of the students there. I was in the Army 88-92. I was stationed in Asia and, just like Sam said, with his friends in Israel. What I saw was totally different than what I was told in the US, especially in China. Propaganda is Propaganda. It's all about getting the population to support the government's view. I look at facts, and facts don't care about feelings. What I have seen fact-wise and what I see on social media are very much two different things. Students need to understand everyone has a point of view. Take everything with a grain of salt. Just because you heard something doesn't mean it is fact. Look for sources, look for the facts don't just accept what people say on social media. Now, when I got out of the Army, I went back to Japan and stayed there for several years. Young people need to look at things from all points of view and then weigh the facts.

My ex is a Palestinian, when we got together I didn't care and only cared about how he treated me. That was a huge mistake. During the relationship he, his friends, and his family said implicitlyand explicitly, "Any non-muslim is only a visitor in Jerusalem." His grandmother still lives in Jerusalem today and so does many of his family members. He routinely travels there once every two or three years to see them. When we discussed marriage towards the end of our relationship, he mentioned I should reconsider what religion to believe in and if my brother can repent for being part of the military. Things were put into perspective for me and I learned a lot from him, his family, his friends, and basically his community.

The way I see it, as an American, I don’t want to care what’s happening on the other side of the planet. Sure, I hate to see death and children suffer but we’ve been in the Middle East since before I was born and 30 some years later we are still there. The United States of America is a blink of an eye compared to the age and history many countries in the Middle East. It has and will always have wars and conflict long after I’m gone. There’s no end when religion and ideology is involved.

I really like the discussions you have in your class. As an audio technician I would really recommend getting a headset microphone with a shorter boom so the capsule is not directly in front of your mouth... The capsule is clipping from time to time. Also, your "p" and "s/t" sounds would be softened much more.

I have lived and worked in Israel, and have visited both jewish and arab quarters while also being warned not to. Westerners were being kidnapped in West Bank and Gaza. We went anyways. And found warm friendly people in both areas. Those friendly Palestinians protected us from HAMAS. Hid us. I came away from those times strongly in support of Israel. Never have I met such a warm loving people. I met so many survivors of Nazi Death camps, listened to their sad tales. To my dying breath, I will stand up for Jews. I will fight you on behalf of Judaism.

@KonaTheDragon by definition, if you are chanting "from the river go the sea" you are calling for the extermination of all jews, and the notion test support for the Jewish people is being termed zionist as if it's a negative is inherently anti Semitic. Supporting a population that half of which supports hamas could also be considered quite anti semetic

When I was young, I was taught that there were two situations when Free speech could be censored. First, you could not yell fire in a crowded theater. Second, you could not contact a group of individuals, to meet at a certain place, at a certain time, to go and hurt or kill a specific individual.
What is the difference between number two, and the pro Hamas/ Palestinian marches, where the chant, " From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free." is being said?
