- The Boondock Saints became a giant cult hit when it hit home video and, indeed, is a movie both loved and hated on this site. The film seemed to come out of nowhere. No one seemed to remember its theatrical run, but word of mouth soon made this film a huge underground hit. Why was this film so unknown? A multitude of factors played into the film's mystery. Bad timing for the release, possibly bad word of mouth from a very famous studio head, and the biggest problem with the whole thing, the writer/director - Troy Duffy.
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, which is written by Bryan Wolford, edited by Cesar Gabriel and narrated by Mathew Plale, we dig into how this troubled, initially obscure DTV movie became a cult sensation.

"I can't walk to the store to buy a pack of smokes without running into 9 guys you fucked!" is still one of the greatest lines in movie history
The Toilet jump from the building with the techno track as he jumps is fantastic.
SMECKER:
everywhere i looked i saw bad reviews of this movie, and i put off watching it for so long. but one day i was bored and finally did and i loved it, it was such a fun time man, idc what anyone says, i think this movie is awesome, it doesn’t take itself too seriously or anything.
Boondock Saints was one of those movies where my much younger self thought it was “awesome af”. I also credit it for beginning my journey into really appreciating Willem Dafoe. And then I saw the sequel and hated it. Then I revisited the original and while I didn’t hate it as much as the sequel, I also wouldn’t wish Rocko on my worst enemy.
This being a Blockbuster exclusive explains why the guys at blockbuster were pushing this one back in the day when I was first getting into Cult films.
One of my favorite films, it strikes the perfect balance of humor, action, and style. Plus super memorable and likable characters.
20 years ago, this movie was hyped by every dude-bro on the planet.
I actually got to work a local premiere of BS 2. Norman, Sean and Troy were all there for a Q&A after the movie. For those that might not know, Julie Benz takes over the William DaFoe-type role. A kid in the crowd asked Duffy for her number. Troy then dials it and hands the kid his phone. Kid turned ghost white, lol. She didn't answer, but then a voice from the back of the theater chimes up moments later, "Hunny, it's Julie!" She called back Troy's wife. Julie then joined the Q&A on speakerphone. It was a fun time. The guys were all cool, but Troy definitely had a cockiness about him. My buddy and I have a photo of the five of us giving the camera the finger. Seemed appropriate. 😆
When me and my ex wife divorced, I threw away and burned a whole lotta things we shared that she left behind. One thing that I absolutely did NOT dispose of was a birthday gift she got me on the last birthday we spent together, which was a personalized, autographed photo from the film that her friend got from these 2 at a convention she attended. Sean even wrote “Happy Fucking Birthday” on it. It still hangs in my living room.
Sean Patrick Flanery had admitted that after Reedus wrapped the 11th season of TWD and he finished wrapping his two movies, they did work on BDS III. So let's cross our fingers.
Being Irish Catholic from Massachusetts, this film has tortured me. It’s like the first question ppl have when they find out I’m Irish from Boston, “have you seen Boondock Saints?” Obviously. I even loved the sequel
"Where you goin'? You're goin' fuckin' nowhere.." -This HUGE fuckin' guy.
TRIVIA: In "American Psycho", the waiter working in the restaurant that Christian Bale and Willem Dafoe eat in is the same dude Dafoe is in bed with that
"I think I'll have a Coke, then"
immediately loved this movie as a young irish man. Imagine my excitement when i found out the 2 main characters are named Connor and Murphy which is a name im lucky enough to hold hahaha
Damn this takes me back Billy connelly in his prime, he was in some good films
I remember watching it in my late teens and loving it, but when I tried rewatching it in my early 20's, I couldn't finish it.
2 years before Boondock Saints was Suicide Kings. I was introduced to both at the same time. Can’t help to think of one with out the other. Like to see you do one on the Suicide Kings. Good stuff man 🤘🏻😎
I remember seeing this poster on many people's walk college dorms.
