- In the late nineties and early 2000s, Matthew Lillard was everywhere. He and that era’s biggest heartthrob, Freddie Prinze Jr, were quite the combo for a while, acting opposite each other in She’s All That, Summer Catch, Wing Commander, and the two Scooby Doo movies. He was the scene-stealing wild man, and he hit the peak of his fame when he was cast as Shaggy in Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. He also had good roles in the cult hits Thirteen Ghosts and Without a Paddle and was one of the killers in Scream. Still, sometime in the mid-2000s, he went from headlining teen studio fare to lower-rent movies like Uwe Boll’s In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, Extreme Movie and something called Endless Bummer. Yet, in 2011 he surprised everyone when he showed up in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and delivered a solid character turn opposite George Clooney.
From there, Lillard made a unique comeback, evolving into an in-demand character actor on TV shows like Billions, The Good Wife and Twin Peaks while also continuing a prolific career as a voice actor (continuing as the voice of Shaggy for many years) and turning up in remakes of his nineties classics like He’s All That. Indeed, he’s had an exciting career. In this episode of What Happened to this Celebrity, we examine how an early indie hit of his, SLC Punk, demonstrated how versatile he was long before Hollywood caught on. While he made not be an A-list star, he’s well respected and is currently riding on off the success of Five Nights at Freddy's. I can’t believe critics hated scooby doo, one of the most iconic kids movies from the 2000’s
I think a lot of people though that grew up as kids iincluding my self watching him as one of the high school friends of main character Sidney Prescott in Scream in 1996 who turns out to be a sadistic killer. Stu was one of the best characters in the Scream I am 36 years old now and still watch Scream from time to time and wasn’t big into the Scooby Doo films.
My mom tells me all the time I used to torture her with my Scooby Doo (2002) movie on vhs by watching it at least once a day sometimes 2 or 3 times. I love this movie no matter what anyone says. Definitely the definitive Shaggy.
I really enjoyed the Live action films. But I really LOVE the 2nd film better

In "Scream" he was actually so convincing as a creepy and crazy killer, its not easy to do play a psychopath
If you like him as a psycho you might like Patrick Bateman in American psycho

He was the best character in Scream. Stu was such a fun character that it caught you off guard that he was the killer. I still love the part where he is talking to Sydney on the phone, and she tells him she called the cops. It always makes me laugh.
I love the part where he's like “my parents are gunna be SO MAD at me 😭😭”
He was really good in this show called "The Bridge", that came out like ten years ago. They canceled it after the second season, but the first season was so good.
Yeah, I still remember being in the theater, thinking "Wait, the one who's always laughing & joking around is gutting people?"
Scary movie kind of ruined the surprise for me
Honestly I was not caught off guard. Because there was a scene where he talked almost passionately about carving someone’s guts out at the beginning of the movie

When my son is bothering my daughter, I always tell him liver alone and chuckle to myself. Also, for me, without a paddle, it is a comedy classic.
Seen every movie hes ever been in SLC punk being my absolute favorite.. hes also a phenomenal voice actor, as shaggy he did the voice so on point like legit soooo dam close to Casey Kasem.. In the movies he had the same mannerisms. Also absolutely loved him in scream and without a paddle. I really hope he gets more roles/VA jobs. I'd love a scooby 3

The funny part is Sket was meant to be the hot one in Scream but I always that Matthew was far more attractive.
I hope that Matthew Lillard gets more roles in mainstream movies (even though he doesn’t need them) just so more people can appreciate his talent. I’m rooting for him to win an Oscar!!

Lillard is much like Brendan Frazer to me. Both unsung heroes of cinema who has more talent than what hollywood gives them credit for.
He's an incredibly underrated actor. I wish Scream made him a bigger icon because he's insane as an antagonist.
His next antagonist role might put a whole new generations eyes on him. He's playing the main villain, William Afton, in the 5 Nights at Freddy's movie.

I'm always ecstatic when I see Matthew pop up in a supporting role, no matter how minor it may seem. His cameo as the principal in "He's All That" was easily the best part, despite his minimal screentime.
I will always think of him as Shaggy, but I also liked his role in Scream

We saw him at a convention and a young girl with cancer waited in line to see him and he knelt down to her level to talk with her. Tell her how brave and strong she was, gave her a hug and asked her if he could take a picture with her. His interaction with her was one of the sweetest things I’ve seen a celebrity do.
Such an underrated actor who deserved far much more.

He was so much the embodiment of cool for me in the 90’s as a teenager that sometimes I forget the generation after us, a bunch of the kids originally remember him as Shaggy…. I always thought he was underrated and should have gotten more rolls into the 2000s, even Wes Craven predicted that Matthew Lillard would win an Oscar someday….that’s how much talent he saw in him

I’m a gen z but a big Lillard fan. I’ve seen at least 7 movies of his. I will admit, I absolutely love Scooby doo so that is part of why I like him so much, but I also love his performance in scream and SLC punk. SUCH a good actor, wish I could meet him someday. I also wish more people could appreciate him especially those my age.
I watched both live action Scooby Doo movies. I liked their crude CGI, and I did find it funny at the same time. Glad Mathew Lillard got to be in the FNAF Movie, and did a reference in the FNAF Movie when he was in the Scream movie.

He was already 25/26 years old when he played Stu Macher one of Sidney Prescott’s close friends in high school in the 1996 horror slasher hit Scream and turns out to be one of the sadistic killers along with Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis.

I love Matthew Lillard. I grew with him as Shaggy, one of my favourite characters of all time, and even though I haven't known him for much more, this video was great for catching up and getting to know a brief overview of his career. Especially, since he was cast in FNAF. I'm so glad how clean Matthew's career is, I'm proud that he's become an icon through his growth as an actor and filmmaker, and even his amazing family life. So refreshing to have people like him in not just the industry, but in general.
It's so refreshing to see an actor who is genuinely talented, but also humble. Also, that clip of him doing the Shaggy voice for the little girl was so precious 🥹.
Grew up with his movies, especially SLC Punk and Hackers. He was everywhere for me and I love so many of his movies. Without a Paddle is 100% a cult classic now, that movie is great. Great cast, great soundtrack, & tons of quotes.

26:05 I was there when this happened! I was like 3 people behind that little girl in the line at Texas Frightmare Weekend in Dallas. It was one of the cutest and most wholesome things I've ever seen. I've met him 3 times and every interaction has been amazing, he truly tries his best to make every person he meets feel special and have their own unique interaction by far the nicest most down to earth celebrity I've ever met and one of the most charismatic humans I've ever met.

The fact he voices Shaggy in the cartoons is just insane awesome. I don't know of any actor that also does VA for the cartoon role.
His role in Scream in 1996 as Stu Macher along with other actors Skeet Ulrich, Neve Campbell, Drew Barrymore, Courtney Cox among others made it a classic horror film. Matthew Lillard set the tone along with Skeet Ulrich as the two best serial killers in the series including Lillard who starts out in film like a sarcastic and funny character and friend to his close friends only to find out in the finale is a sadistic killer and enjoys killing no clear motive.
Matthew is awesome! He seems so legit and down to earth.

I've met Matthew Lillard and he also signed my gfs Scooby-Doo doo backpack dudes nice and genuine funny and chill in person and I've never seen or heard of anyone saying he wasn't a joy to meet or talk to
Has anyone ever said a bad thing about him? I think not. He's so likable and those who have worked with him talk so highly about how professional and nice he is. Especially for new actors who work with him. The way Dax Shepard speaks of him warms my heart.

Not gonna lie I think his most underrated and really fucking fun movies are "Without paddle" (2004), The perfect Score (2004) and "She is all that" (1999) he was hilarious and great in those flicks. Especially "Without a paddle" is a hilarious gem of a movie, Seth green was also funny as always
Scream was honestly my first time seeing Matthew Lillard and I had Scooby-Doo on VHS.
I've always liked this dude. Two of my favorite movies of his, Scream and Without a Paddle, Guilty pleasure I guess but funny as hell none the less. It's definitely a comedy classic in my opinion.

Without a Paddle will always be a favourite comedy of mine. 3 leads, 3 different comedic styles that worked so well together… and yeah, that rainy cave scene is worth watching the whole movie for 😂 I’ve tried to describe it to people, and it’s hard to make it sound interesting or funny, but if you watch it, you get it lol

I first saw Matthew Lillard in Thirteen Ghosts, you didn't speak enough about his part in that so I will. Matthew's character was Dennis Rafkin who is a psychic and helped Cyrus capture the ghosts, and by 'helped' I mean basically did all the work. So even though he wasn't in the movie as much as some of the other actors, he was one of the most important characters.
A lot of things happened to Matthew Lillard. He is such a kind, caring, charismatic guy and also a great actor. Probably one of the very best in the business.
