WTF Happened to Sucker Punch?

- Before the Snyderverse, Zack Snyder was one of Warner Bros’ most prominent directors, with him having helmed the wildly successful 300 and Watchmen. While the latter of these two movies didn’t set the world on fire in terms of box office, it still did perfectly decent business, and for his follow-up, Snyder was given a lot of latitude to make what would be his first film based on an original concept, Sucker Punch. The story of a group of female mental patients who enter a fantasy world, the film was met with pretty dismal box office by Snyder’s standards. Critics had a field day with his fantasy epic, and fans mostly dismissed it as a weaker effort for the director.
While Sucker Punch was quickly forgotten once Snyder made Man of Steel and launched his ill-fated DC Snyderverse, the movie has eked out a bit of a following amongst some of his most devoted fans. While an utterly bizarre film, it’s also pretty original with a terrific cast that includes Ghost Ship’s Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung, Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, Scott Glenn, Jon Hamm, and a pre-fame Oscar Isaac.
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into the making of Snyder’s misbegotten fantasy epic, examining its fate at the box office and the cult that’s sprouted up around it. This episode is written by Jake Dee, narrated by Mathew Plale and edited by Jeremy Hamley.

Before I even watch this video I just want to say that I unapologetically love Sucker Punch. It’s actually a really incredible film, especially with the right ending. So sad that this one didn’t connect with people. It’s really powerful and really fun!
Came here to say the exact same thing. I'm not a Zach Snyder fan but this movie spoke to me and the story made complete sense to me. But I can see it going over the head of general audiences.
Couldn’t agree more with the both of you! 🫡
totally agree
You ain't alone brother. Sucker punch slaps. I even bought the soundtrack on cd back when❤️🔥
I Got the Director's Cut and, in this form, makes a LOT of SENSE!
I Love this Movie! PERIOD!
~NUFF SAID~
~SEMPER FIDELIS~
The beauty of this movie is that it teaches you that the story isn't about you. You will not be remembered but you will know you did the right thing.
yes you get it
That's the whole point I've been telling people. She went to a place worse than death not because she was trying to be a hero but because she is a hero. The only person that will remember her is the lone survivor
I agree! With your statement! I love Sucker Punch. I can see why people dislike it but I remain a fan of this movie to this day.
That part of the story is probably the only thing in this film to resonate with me even slightly. I really dislike it.
I’m so glad everyone in the comments agrees this movie is badass
@Anonymous Talker Dont let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.... ;P
Hell yes!!!!!!!!
I showed this to my teenaged step daughters and they completely loved this, it found a way to be completely female led but not at the expense of male characters and we watch it from time to time and they're still into it. Brilliantly visual and interesting.
You watch video?
"female led" Very male gazey female leads.
@@lizardog the pejorative "male gaze" can only apply to letches and many of those are sapphic gazes also. I get what your saying but its too unnuanced now to simply apply such things to males. Besides my girls are motivated positively by the characters subverting the manner in which they are forced to dress for the shows by dressing thusly as they battle and win.
@@lizardog The whole point, the whole message, was around the female characters not having a choice in the way they are dressed for the male gaze, but taking power in it anyways, and proving to themselves that they are more than what people want to see them as. Them being "dressed for the male gaze" here was an indictment on dressing women for the male gaze in geek culture (such as comic books). All of the female characters have their humanity stripped from them by powerful male figures in their lives (in this mental institution), and so the female characters take back power in their fantasies. They dress this way in their fantasies as a way to prove to themselves that no matter what men try to do to them, they can be total badasses.
The fact that your indictment is that they are "Very male gazey female leads" proves that you didn't understand any of the messaging of the movie.
@@MarisaClardy Just because you have a message against exploitation doesn't mean you're not being exploitative yourself in how you present it. Which absolutely was the case with this movie, to the point even as a dude; I was uncomfortable with the level of "fan service".
If you need strong female leads to show your daughters, there's always Terminator and the sequel. There's always the "Alien" franchise.
Leon the Professional, Lucy, Enough (older movie, quite a bit older, starred Jennifer Lopez), Alita Battle Angel, Kill Bill, Tank Girl, literally all these films did a better job of presenting empowered females than this garbage movie. Which brings me to my next point, those were all vastly better films on every level.
This movie barely had a plot to begin with, but it managed to trick people with a bunch of woo woo; pseudo-intellectual and pseudo-spiritual nonsense. The entire plot, and screenplay for this movie is probably about 2 pages filled on both sides; because they knew they could just fill the rest with PS3 level CGI.
They knew the drooling, already low IQ before the pills population would just eat that garbage up. Even once people figured out it was a movie anyone with an IQ above the number of fingers and toes they have would want erased from their memory; it's too late, because most of them already paid.
They wanted to get the full theater experience; because this film was sold as an intense visual experience, which it absolutely was. I just wish it was also a good movie.
I saw this movie on a flight. I was still tempted to walk out.
Of all Snyders movies, that's certainly my favorite. It's not perfect but it's definitly is the one that resonated the most with me. It takes risks, it's visually impressive, it's super dark despite some glitters thrown here and there... I hope someday this movie is "rediscovered" and get the love and traction it deserves.
I couldn't choose between 300 and this one. all though its comparing apples to oranges. both movies where crafted amazing almost perfectly. both movies captured the atmosphere and intensity of what they were trying to represent. this man is a genius
@@attiumeyami417 the difference between 300 and Sucker Punch is that 300 is straight to the point War film Meanwhile Sucker Punch is focused on it's concept of escapism storytelling inside the minds of a girl in a mental institution.
I am so saddened that sucker punch didn’t get more recognition. It was an amazing film and an incredible idea. I would have love to have seen more. The world that they created would have been so kool to do multiple movies of. Such a shame.
I love this movie and I would love to see a Director's Cut 🥰😍. I loved the action and I understood the story just fine. I don't get where everyone is so confused?
I don't get it either. I think it's an epic movie. I'm proud to have it in my colllection.
There is an extended cut of the movie. Not sure if that is the director's cut, but it's about 30 mins. longer.
The extended version adds 2 major scenes that really make the narrative more cohesive. Cutting it down for the cinemas really hurt it.
I agree. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and while I'll concede it's not Shakespeare, I don't see how it's any worse than the usual action blockbuster.
I think this video sums up the movie extremely well.

If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything…
I'm a fan of Sucker Punch... It was a unabashed thrill ride. I won't argue that it's his best work or even close but it was fun and it took chances and turned BabyDoll into one of my favorite original female heroines of all time. She was a bad ass and I believe the film would have been even better if the studio didn't force him once again to remove huge chunks of what he filmed for more screen time like longer movies can't be successful. I mean what movies gonna be satisfactory to everyone when the director has a vision, films it and then if forced to remove entire plot points for time? I am definitely waiting with bated breath in the Snyder Cut of this one. More BabyDoll and Friends fighting mini gun toting giant demon samurais... Yes please!
I liked it too, though I can see why it didn’t strike a chord with audiences. The trailers led people to expect a massive action movie with strippers fighting Nazis or something, when the heart of the movie was actually a deeply metaphorical redemption tale. I can imagine that gave most audiences whiplash.
I also liked it a lot.
What they fail to mention here is that the Snyder cut was released over 10 years ago on the Blu Ray as the "extended cut" and has all the missing scenes put back in. There is almost 18 minutes worth of footage edited back into the movie.
@@djassassinuk what? Zack was in Film Junkee and he said he filmed a longer cut and his unedited version he wanted released in theaters was never released and WB has it and he's not sure if it'll ever see the light. He literally just said that during the ZSJL promo tour... You trying to tell me... Tell uss Zack doesn't know his own Zack Snyder stamped version of his movie was released on Blu Ray? 🤔 Wouldn't he have instead told Junkee during the interview that fans should pick up that Snyder Cut of Sucker Punch instead of saying "I don't know who owns it or if it'll ever come out? It's in the WB vault somewhere?" Make it make sense now you know but the director doesn't? 🤔
" I won't argue that it's his best work or even close"
It's easily the most *interesting* movie he's made, and I would say it's close to his best.
IMO, this is a much underrated one from Zack Snyder.
You like r*ping and lobotomizing women?
It is a bad film.
I thought it was alot of fun
@@googlelord1678 It sucks? You mean like your English?
@@googlelord1678 You completely missed the point. Watch it again after you grow up, you'll get it.
I love 'Suckerpunch', saw it in the theatre and own it on DVD, every re-watch I discover new layers in the story. And the visuals are awesome.
I love it too. I've only rewatched it once because the ending is so sad. Movies today are just rehashed IP's with no originality. This movie was a special effects bonanza, a psychological thriller, an imaginative fantasy, and in some ways a feminist rebellion against male oppression without coming off as preachy or putting men down. On top of all of that, the motivation for Babydoll was for the love and protection of a sister. So sprinkle in some compassion on top.. My other favorite movie of all time is Strange Days. It flopped commercially for the same reasons. It was a sci-fi-conspiracy,-love story-who done it murder mystery, all rolled into one. I think some movies are just too complicated for the average movie goer to really understand. Essentially, Sucker Punch was too good for it's audience.
One of the best movies I have watched. I don`t think a lot of people really understood what was going on or how deep it really was so they gave it a bad rating.
I always seen this movie as a live-action manga. And frankly it wasn't all that bad to me although I know it gets a lot of hate in some quarters.
Live action manga is a really good description
I may be old, but i seen it as a live action Heavy Metal (the movie and magazine) film.
The matrix is a live action manga. This is just bad.
@@valzod3808 That's true, the Wachowski's worked for Marvel prior to filming the Matrix, and were working on another comic when they decided to do a live action anime/manga film instead, something cyberpunk a la Ghost in the Shell.
it def needs one
I went to see that movie, when it came out, without any prior knowledge. It was a blast! Until today, I really like this movie.
On a side note, I find it every time refreshing to have an entire cast on the more unknown side.
I loved this movie. Would love a Snyder cut.
There is a cut I had the DVD trade it in and just redownload the extended cut both versions are great!!!!!!
I remember seeing this in the theaters and being blown away by the visuals. Especially the train sequence set to that beautiful cover of Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles, which is still in my iTunes 11 years later.
Side Note: I went to Universal Studios Halloween Horror nights in October of 2011, and during the Bill And Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure, the girls from Sucker Punch appeared and began walking out into the audience, selling candy bars. When Bill and Ted asked them what they were doing, their response was "hey, our movie flopped! We've gotta make our money back somehow!!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'll take "Shit that never happened" for $200, Alex.
@@Levicandoit good luck to you on future assumptions based on absolutely nothing, kid. 👍
I met the writer of Earth Wind & Fire's September in 2010 at an Olive Garden. Good on you not believing everything you read online, but it's not that crazy of a story. HHN is a blast.
What!? You lucky bastard!!! :D
Dragged my friends to watch this back when it first hit theaters and even though they both hated it passionately, I loved it then and love it now. When people asked, “Who was this movie made for?” I always answered, “ME!”
Vanessa Hudgens, Emily Browning and Jamie Lee Chung killing zombies and dragons?! Cmon that’s fire! 🔥
the movie is actually made for people that enjoy thinking. unfortunately thats not the majority of the masses. and thats why the movie failed.
Yeah I actually loved this. It's definitely not your average movie! It's batshit crazy and the action is mental. Not one bit surprised it didn't light the world on fire though, it is a bit deeper than it originally seems.
I love Sucker Punch and hope we get to see his true directors cut some day.
I genuinely love this film and in every aspect I think it was one of the most creative films that came out that year I appreciate it for all of its things and I feel bad that it didn't do well I tried to make it do well
I really like sucker punch. It's a really fun and visually entertaining movie.
I am with on on that. Plus I love Emily Browning and Abbie Cornish.
This movie got me through a really dark period in my early teen years. To this day I still throw the soundtrack on at least once a month.
I miss original, crazy movies. Sucker Punch was a great bizarre experience.
I put this in the same category as Time Bandits and Buckaroo Bonzai
I am not a fan of Zack Snyder, but I loved sucker punch. It was new and different. I know I am in the minority on that one.
Sucker Punch is not misogynistic. Sucker Punch shows these young women fighting it out with guys in a mental institution as all of these women were locked up for fabricated reasons. And anyone that follows cosplay loves the costumes of the girls from Sucker Punch: Baby Doll, Amber, Blondie, Sweet Pea, Rocket. So whoever complained about Sucker Punch did not watch the movie well enough to understand how brilliant Sucker Punch really is.🤗❤💯✅✅✅
Except it doesn't show that at all. It shows a helpless woman forced to retreat into her own mind as an oppressive misogynistic organization destroys her. Literally destroys her to the point of sexually assaulting and lobotomizing her. And what's her "win"? She helped someone else escape, which is nice and all, but when you're writing a story, you want audiences to identify with the protagonist. And brutalizing your protagonist (and by extension, the audience who is supposed to identify with them) with no payoff is not a good idea. Not when you're selling your movie as a girl-boss action flic. There are absolutely ways to write that kind of story if that's what you want to tell, but set audience expectations for it.
@@cryofpaine see for me, the biggest, and most obvious take away from the story (besides the power of escapism) is that you may be the main character in your story, but not necessarily someone else's but that doesn't mean the impact you have is lessened in any way. Just because the assumption is made that the story is about you, doesn't always make it so. I quite enjoyed the different approach in that sense!
@@LastPlaceHero and that could have been an interesting story to tell. But when you set the expectation that the story you're telling is one thing, then deliver something totally different, people are going to be upset.
@@cryofpaine I totally disagree with the idea that "The audience cannot have subverted expectations." I mean, I watch movies to be surprised. If I know how it ends, why watch it? I don't love it when I am thinking the hero will live to the end,, and they die, but I still enjoy the film. I watched 50 meters down, and I was all excited that both sisters lived that when I realized it was just in her head from nitrogen narcosis, that I screamed. I still liked the movie, over all. So, Sucker Punch, I also wanted her to win. I wanted her to get away, and when she didn't... I screamed. But I didn't hate it. I loved the move over all.
@@shayliakara there's subverting expectations, and then there's sucker punching your audience to try and seem clever. A good subversion knows how to play with expectations in a satisfying way. Psycho or The Suicide Squad killing off big name actors in the first few minutes of the film. Inglorious Bastards rewriting history. Actually that's a great example. Inglorious Bastards doesn't try to sell itself as a documentary. Imagine if Spielberg had had Oskar Schindler kill Hitler at the end of the movie. Everything else exactly the same as Schindler's List, but then out of the blue, bam, Schindler shoots Hitler. People would be pissed. Because that's not the movie they went to see. They went in expecting a fairly faithful account of a real-life story. They went into Inglorious Bastards expecting a fictionalized action comedy. So the fact that it wasn't true to life wasn't a problem. Where it would be in Schindler's List. Both would be "subverting expectations", but in SL, it would feel like a betrayal, a waste of our time and disrespectful of the audience, rather than a clever subversion.
Sucker Punch just feels like he was trying to be clever by putting in that "gotcha".
I freaking love this film. This movie has it all. Great story telling to incredible action set pieces
Yes and the makeup and contour was spot on!!!! It's fun to look diff tho as I did it to myself makeup and contour is alotta work but it's def worth it!!!!
I actually liked it. And having a less known cast allows me to focus more on the characters rather than the actors playing them. (Unlike a Dwayne Johnson movie. "Oh look, the rock is a superhero. Oh look, the rock is this, the rock is that." Having a "known cast" isn't always a good thing. It can easily distract from the story because all you see is the actor, not the character). I also like the psychological aspect of the film. The action scenes were all in Baby Doll's mind, providing her a form of escape from her harsh reality. And the "sexualised" aspect of it is just part of her power fantasy. She imagined herself as a beautiful, unstoppable badass that could do anything. This film is a lot deeper than most would think.
I loved this movie SO MUCH! Maybe it’s because I’ve actually been in those awful places and became a MASTER of disassociation….but I love Sucker Punch 😍🙌🏼
Yeah. Those moments where life gets so shitty that you have to go into an escape fantasy to cope. I had no idea what this movie was about when I watched it. I never questioned what was happening. I knew from the start that Babydoll was disassociating.
I've been there toooooo where baby doll is homeless and all but this movie gives great advice!!!!! Work hard on yourself and you can get there!!!!!!!! Also beLIIIEEVVEEE!!!!!!
It sure is a movie. Of all the movies I've seen, this is one of them.
Sucker Punch is still one of my favorite films of all time. The multi layered story with open-ended interpretations is on par with the best of Nolan's films in my opinion. It's pure art, unique and beautiful in it's own way.
Don’t ever disrespect Chrisopher Nolan like that again
@@KeiziSome of nolan movie are twisted, loud music and to many plot twists..example: TENET 🤢🤢🤢

Sucker Punch
This movie was so dope to me. I’m retired military. We used to run the shoot house for CQC. Before I get on line, I would show the shooters the train sequence. Those ladies worked so dayum hard. The movements were tight. The fundamentals was evident done to their trigger squeeze. I will forever love this movie!
Vanessa Hudgens talked about how her training for Sucker Punch helped her with Bad Boys a decade later.
The train sequence is my favorite moment in the film.
I seen it as a live action heavy metal movie.
I really enjoyed it. Would it have benefitted from a little exposition to explain what you were watching for the more impatient audience...yes. Personally I like a movie that makes you pay attention and rewards you with the most amazing visuals and a real roller-coaster. It's absolutely the movie you should see twice to enjoy it.
Sucker Punch is a good movie. It is probably the first movie that started the trend of Snyder productions where on first viewing you come out confused or frustrated, but on second viewing everything starts to make sense and suddenly the film takes on a different meaning.
A much better film than the typical audience large studios targeted...sadly, the typical audience has continued to numb.
And they were dumb with it!!!!!!
Despite other’s opinions I absolutely love Sucker Punch and after seeing this movie I was excited when they first announced Zach Snyder would be handling Superman.
This film kind of introduced a concept similar in tone to Inception’s A Dream Within A Dream and did so before Inception existed.
I mean, there’s the actual gritty reality of the events taking place, there’s the facade reality that’s pulled from the sexualized experience of the story teller and her co-conspirators within the corrupt asylum, and then there’s the true dream-like reality where the characters are shown escaping into in order to achieve their mission objectives.
I thought it was a really neat way of conveying the story telling elements of the film. Particularly because it’s not actually Babydoll’s retelling of her own experiences, it’s actually Sweet Pea’s retelling of Babydoll’s story and how it ties into her own story. It just makes sense to use the super embellished dream-like reality fabrications because Sweet Pea can’t ever truly know what was really going on in Babydoll’s mind during her distraction events. Think of the film Big Fish and how tall-tales are featured to embellish on reality.
Clearly the depth of this was missed by many people.
Lol. Nah
Except no where in this movie was their a dream within a dream. Take it easy on the copium.
@@mechanomics2649 hence, “…introduced a concept similar in tone…”
Perhaps you should take the time to re-read a statement and fully comprehend it before responding.
@c00lhand208. Yes. Yes, YES. You have provided one of the best descriptions of this impressive and important film. I lament it’s lack of massive popularity but I am grateful there are so many of us that truly love it.
unapologetic fan of this movie! for the life of me I can't understand why people didn't connect with this movie. it was one hell of an engaging thrill ride, great story, amazing visuals, kick a$$ soundtrack. one of my favorite movies.
And yeah, when I saw it on release I got that it was a send up on the male gaze and the exploitation of women. I was quite surprised when most people thought the opposite. The message is definitely there, it just seems to have gotten lost.
It was vitriolically attacked by the men it was exposing. I think they got the point and didn't like it.
I love sucker punch & watchmen director’s cut but in today’s day in age we need a lot of original ideas and if I was Snyder I would had fight for more original movies my opinion tho
This was an amazing movie and I thought the idea of it was original. I hope they bring out another one of these. I seriously enjoyed it and those that don’t just don’t get it at all. Think about it, a movie that tells the story three times different. How people cope and how people live life. A dream within a dream inside reality. There is a lot of room for these types of movies and themes. Please make more and ignore all the sub humans out there.
Agreeeeeeddddd!!!!!!
Went and watched this in theaters and loved it. The music even stuck with me after the movie the next day I went and bought the sound track on cd.
I can't say I like this move... But I like the potential of this movie. It's just missing... something.. I don't think there's anyone who knows what it is yet.
This movie bugged me because I Wanted to like it - part of my mind was like “This is really cool and fun” but the other part was all like “What the actual crap is happening ??”
Also I think it would have made a more interesting STORY to see what was actually going in in the ward instead of what was happening in their heads
It was boring af😴
I have a guess- based also on @Chase D.
here-
The film really *is* a guy film about hot scantily clad girls fighting great evil-
But doesnt want to be. It hates itself.
Similar to how the Game of thrones series is a Lord of the Rings style fantasy hero epic, but the writer hates all of that and is actively trying to undermine it in his writing- and now he cant finish his last book because he is trapped by that paradox.
Satire doesnt work when it takes itself as seriously as what it is trying to satirize. It gets trapped between the joke and the plot.
Just my guess, and based on a 10 year old memory and the comments here.
I think a lot of the people that actually like it, would like that sort of show (sexy women fight evil monsters) but cannot find that type of show anywhere in western media anymore. And so they take the food that they can, even when it doesnt play all the notes, or, as in this case, when ideologically poisoned against itself.
Again, just a humble guess and I may be very, very wrong. I do have a migraine right now XD
@@ClockworkAnomaly I disagree completely about why people liked it. Going in, I had no real expectations but by the end of the movie I was nearly in tears.
It was precisely the critique, the satire that drew me in and made me invested in the struggles of the main characters. And the lobotomy at the end was the “sucker punch” to drive home the point. All the rampant misogyny and exploitation of women in media is - like this movie - a Tragedy.
Im sure some people only like it for the fights and whatnot. I had seen the promotional material that highlighted the “sexy girls with katanas” angle - but the biggest problem this movie faced was that modern cinema doesn’t do tragedy. People didn’t know how they were supposed to feel at the end. Combine that cultural confusion with a complex, highly stylized and symbolic narrative and people would rather say “didn’t like it” and move on than try to parse the more complicated feelings they experienced.
@@TheCardinalbiggles you are a rare breed friend, and thus not really relevant to broad spectrum analysis. Most people are low brow, not high. Most people dont care about wine tasting their films with critical lenses such as "satire," and "tragedy." Indeed they often misuse these words, lacking any historical context for what they are speaking about, only a general grasp of the english language or otherwise. Just as most people dont truly know how to taste wines, identify car engines, style a "look," critique art, or design, even game design for that matter, especially board game design.
Even if every person is special(ised) in one such way, they are base and ininformed in the vast majority of others, and yet they partake, they use, they expend, all these things, without ever understanding them. The world has always been far too wide to perceive all things for one man, though when the world was less connected it was easier to convince oneself this was not so.
Besides that, I liked the movie for the fights and the beautiful women, and I dont see that as an evil, as you seem to. The writing honestly, was quite lacking, not standing up to far better tragedies I have experienced in medias of various sort, or even real life. Then again, that is a preference, and perhaps I never had the right experiences to "get it," as it were. However, I absolutely despise the thought of films that are made on the face to cater to a demographic, and then, sucker punch them with some type of opposing lesson. That type of activism is best done person to person, and any mass media attempt smacks at conspiracy, even if not so, due to the power dynamics involved in the lesson teaching. The Last Jedi and Game of Thrones (books), are recent examples, and to hear Spielberg here, Sucker Punch was another attempt.
I just watched this last night and I loved it--the originality, the special effects, the unknown cast, the soundtrack...it wasn't perfect, but I've never seen anything else like it, and I've seen a LOT of movies.
The inner workings of a teenage boys mind. Us adults just aren't edgy enough to understand.
I haven’t seen this movie in a few years but I loved it and I thought it had a very stirring emotional core.
I really appreciate the emphasis that you apply, when reading others words and quotes...
I think it goes a long way...
Me an my wife love this. We watched it in theatre and still today.
It’s actually good if you go in with no expectations, and I don’t mean that as shitty as it sounded. I might be biased because I adore Emily browning but the story is actually sad and underrated. It is all of the things in this video too but it’s visually beautiful in a dark way and shows the way disassociating the mind while trauma occurs can be. I know I’m the minority in liking this but I think it’s worth a watch, if not to at least appreciate the hotness of Emily browning.
This is absolutely one of my top 10 movies. I love it!
Could I have some recommendations please? I really like movies like sucker punch or cloud atlas but only ever stumble onto them by accident…
I loved this movie, and so did my wife and daughter. The ladies worked hard on this and it paid off they looked and acted cool as , , , , This movie is a true work of visual art
Sucker Punch was an incredible movie, absolutely enjoyed every minute of that movie!
i kinda feel like the movie itself being all over the place was to empathise the craziness of it all, since they’re in a “looney ward”. The fantasies were all over the place and that was in her head…so would that mean her head is all over the place? her mind? she’s going crazy in there and then a lobotomy to finish it all off as “the end”. This all could be like that on purpose or maybe i’m thinking into it too much😭😭
Thing is though, her being crazy isn't established. All of these women are fsr too good looking for mental illness. Mental illness is the opposite of spectacle
Art is often subjective. So. Who knows?
Nope, you are not overthinking it too much. That's exactly the point of it. Babydoll was disassociating from reality and using fantasy to cope with the overwhelming stress of her situation. I think that people were confused because she seemed to be "normal" when outside of her fantasies. She was sad and depressed throughout the entire movie. The movie didn't have Babydoll hearing voices or acting out violently and screaming jibberish in a stereotypical movie portrayal of insanity. This movie requires some intelligence on behalf of the viewers to meet it halfway and make the connection that you made.
What I find interesting is all the neurodivergent folks I know who have seen this movie absolutely love it, with neurotypicals it's been hit and miss though
@@pdxmarine1430 As a person who is neurodivergent myself, I really just didn't like the movie.
I do think that there is something good in there but it is lost in a sea of noise. Way too much style, way too little substance.
I honestly like Sucker Punch. I watched it twice and found it thought-provoking. As with most ZS movies, I think it was way ahead of its time. I feel you have to watch it more than once before you can truly understand and appreciate it. So sad that it's grossly underappreciated and misunderstood.
Loved that movie! It's one of my favorites, I always have thought that it was about the abuse of the mentally ill in phy wards from back in the day, and baby's way of dealing with it in her head.... Great movie and want to see the directors cut
Its really not that bad of a movie.... You went hard too... Basically its a new generations 'Cutthroat Island" An over stylish genre film that is hit or miss. Its elevated to almost cult status... which might be the worst place for a movie because the next step is usually forgotten....
the way in which you categorize this film is very simplistic, this is actually a work of genius with layers of thematic depth we rarely see.
My dad took me to see this film in the cinema back when it came out. I have watched it a couple times since and still enjoy it. I am also pretty sure it awakened something in my young teenage mind
Strange movie with a hard to follow plot...but one that employed several of my colleagues that provide uniforms and costumes for films....hard to follow , but visually stunning.
it's an amazing movie. I loved every minute of it. highly unpredictable, amazing twist. great acting.
This is by far one of my favorite movies.
Why folks don't understand the idea of a traumatized girl retreating into a fantasy delusion to escape her emotional turmoil is something I will never understand.
Love this film. Glad it managed to get made. A lot of the greatest films in history were financial failures at the time of their release.
I LOVE Sucker Punch! It's aetheticall perfect for my taste, I live the outfits, I love the action.
I love the dark tone.
Maybe the reminder if the harsh reality for young women was too much for the mainstream audience?
This was an excellent film. I really connected with this film because it really bought home a lot of deep emotional things that takes place in a home specially hurt and harming abuse. This was a really really good story line I wish that it was more successful. But I really connected with this film.
The music and movie is one of my favourite movies of all time.
I do remember the marketing and the actual movie being very different. When I watched the movie first time I liked it but didn't love it. It did take me a second watch to understand the movie. I'd love to see a directors cut.
I genuinely likes this film was not as bad as they made it out to be
after all these years, this is still my favorite movie. like, unironically, I love this movie so much for some reason 😂
Excruciatingly Awesome movie!
Fantastic actors, storyline, graphics!
Love it, and the extended edition improves it further.
I loved sucker punch . It was refreshing and new
I seriously love Sucker Punch. Visuals are really good. The leads are easy on the eyes, effects are not wonky, love the arcs and the music too! People are just to critical and all.
I loved this movie when I 1st saw and still love it now. I agree it was strange to not have Babydoll speak for like 20 mins but it also made her more interesting. I'd definitely like to see the movie uncut because I felt like I was missing something but I couldn't quite figure out what. I think this movie did a lot of things right though, the visuals are amazing. I also like how the casting choices weren't distracting. Vanessa was the only one of them I recognized from having seen her on the Disney channel. It kept it fresh and I wasn't left disappointed by my favorite big-name actor not getting more scenes. I wished there had been more parts of the movie taking place in the apocalyptic war world, I would have watched just that movie by itself. It was a bit jarring to have the world transitions be so harsh, but that's how harsh it is for Babydoll so it fits. I'd gladly rewatchthe movie for the directors cut.
The movie never addresses Baby Dolls trauma, so she becomes a comic book character instead of a human, trying to survive.
I LOVED this movie. It was an awesome ride pleasantly accentuated with fresh, new talent along side great supporting talent like Scott Glenn and Oscar Isaac.
The soundtrack was emotionally moving and remains timeless to this day. (I have Army of Me as my ring tone for about 3 yrs now 🤣 and I STILL can't hear the intro of Where is My Mind w/o having to fight literal tears!)
I may be the only person on the planet not ashamed to call this film what it is...Iconic.
Personally, I am praying for the release of the directors cut!
Now plz excuse me while I proceed to watch it once AGAIN. 😉
You're not alone ☺️
Another reason why I love Sucker Punch is it shows how easily people can be accused of being insane by state-run politicians, district attorneys, medical psychiatrists and then the people get locked away. It is that easy. The stepfather in this movie plots to kill the wife, inherit the wealth of the wife, then he becomes enraged that the wife had willed the estate to her daughters. Then he wants to go after the sisters.
Good video. Never watched the film but always saw scenes so wanted a breakdown. Also, I think you mean IP (intellectual property) not IPO (initial public offering)😉
Nothing wrong with Sucker Punch - I missed it on the big screen (along with many others), but it’s a generally enjoyable roller coaster.
If a director’s remaster, with all original footage, came out in 4K, I’d buy it - heck, I’d go back to the cinema!
I love the extended cut of this movie so so much 😃😃😃😃
Exactly. I was left a bit confused by the Theatrical version of the film, but the extended edition helped add more understanding to its story.
I love Sucker Punch. It's an amazing movie!
I love this movie so much. It's one of the best movies that I've ever seen. It's a psychological thriller wrapped in a pop culture less serious approach. That dichotomy of ideas threw people off. For me, it was a fresh artistic take. I've already seen One Flew Over the CooCoo's Nest. I've never seen One Flew Over the CooCoo's Nest with giant samurai and machine guns. It doesn't make sense, but at the same time it makes sense because it's all a psychological manifestation of Babydoll who is disassociating her psyche from reality to cope with her dire situation.
I really liked this movie. A collection of loosely connected stories in a Sci-fi Steampunk themed setting of semi hallucinated by the main character is really original in a good way. The main problem was a lack of connection with audiences, but the core idea was good.
I really enjoyed this film when it came out. Perhaps it's worth another watch to see if it still holds up after all these years.
It does. 😁
Watch the extended edition. It’s better.
Sucker Punch was great... Emily Browning being an unknown was great as well...
it made you focus on the story....
the seeming incoherence of the story is because it is based on the fractured psyche of the protagonist...
also, the movie actually showed the Epstein's of the world and how the protagonist tried to rise above the abuse and the abusers...
And the sound track is awesome!!!
So glad i watch this back then on big screen. Very underated.
When Scarface came out it was also hated then it went on to become a cult classic. This movie was just ahead of its time. Great movie, incredible soundtrack!!!!
This movie is great! It takes a couple viewings but I love it
I simply loved it from the beginning. Bought even the Steelbook Edition
One of the most visually stunning movies. There were times this movie really took you so far away from reality.
I absolutely loved this movie as a younger lad, and pretty much cemented my crush on Emily Browning
Exactly
I despised Sucker Punch. It was all style over substance and the ending made an already tiring film, even more pointless. It also made me realized i wasn't into Zack Snyder films.
I saw the trailer when it was at the theaters but didn't have time to go see it. Years later I bought the DVD, it wasn't what I thought it was about from the trailer. After a while I watched it again and thought it was great! The concept is fantastic!
This is one of his best. Love this
I loved this movie, I think it’s a masterpiece.
Haven't watched the movie yet but, I want to. Even after watching this. I also have to say, Zack would be the best choice if they ever make a Bioshock movie.
zack snyder will miss the point of bioshock's undertone which is a criticism of ayn rand
It’s an underrated gem, so is the soundtrack. I stand by both.
Couldn't agree more, this movie wasn't as good as portrayed by those who loved it for both visuals and purported themes. A lot of people love it for its skin, and think it bold, but was it really empowering or modern exploitation said to have been done with a twist. It did seem a 70s sexploitation film redux
I maintain that Dawn of the Dead is Zack Snyder's only good movie.
Great movie with psychological and symbolic elements. Shame too many refused to look beyond the surface to see it for the movie about guilt and sacrifice that it was.
