I agree with most of what Frank Zane stated in this interview. Certainly the part about being yourself. Body building can be very vain. Even to the point of absolute arrogance. Its refreshing to hear such honesty, in the midst of what was likely, a very chaotic time in body building history.
As far as his comments about size. I agree that size isn't as important as overall symmetry, definition and posing. Every body builder brings something unique to the stage. Something they want the judges to see. Zane brought to the stage a body that wasn't big, but was symmetrical in its overall development as far as muscles were concerned. His techniques regarding posing were designed to purposely showcase that symmetry. The fluid movements from one pose to another, allowing judges and the audience to see for themselves, how equal his body was from one side to the other.
Ego is very much a part of life. For the average body builder back in the 1970's and 1980's, one had to possess a fairly sizeable ego in order to compete with so many amazing body builders.
Frank Zane, by all accounts, wasn't a big body builder, like Arnold for example. But what he lacked in size, he more then made up for with such a symmetrical beautiful muscular body. Certainly, for guys who are not that tall or large, he stands as a true testament to what a man with a smaller frame can do if they set their mind to it.

Zane had no weaknesses
and his detail & conditioning was flawless. At 5ft 9in you can still run 5 miles every day if you want to and these mass monsters today couldn't sprint 50 yards to save their lives without collapsing and they can't even wipe their asses because their so muscle bound at 5ft 9in at 265lb at 3% bodyfat and at death's door on stage. I've been using the same way of thinking that Mr. Zane mentions here about "saying things and they eventually become law" and I've accomplished quite with it. Very intelligent man, pleasure to listen to him speak.

Great interview with Frank Zane. which rhymes with sane i.e.possessing a balanced state of mind, which many goal oriented folks either lack or lose along the path to their goal. Today we are saturated with magic supplement/testosterone commercials aimed at men over 40. Still the ultimate tool is the grey matter between one's ears and Zane controlled his mind and body superbly. "Mens sana corporae sana".

Zane: a very smart guy both in and away from the gym. Two things I take from this interview: focus and perserverance. I think every champion, in whatever sport or job, has these two ingredients for success in spades.

Zane is powerful at manifesting his reality and placing his intention. People would do well to pay close attention to this part from 21:33 to 23:26. He's basically teaching us how to create our own reality through spoken word. Guy was light-years ahead of all that SECRET crap. A true sage of the mystic arts.

Fantastic video! Thanks for this, such a perspective from a Pyschologist and Athlete. Mr. Zane is a 'Class Individual.'
As a Runner, I am taking a lot of positive information this. Like him, I've been a. Competitive Runner for 50 years. I like winning too, but admire him as he has total respect for others like Arnold and Lou, Dave Draper and the other Icons of the Sport.
Incredible to listen to the video..awesome stuff. A true Warrior who earned the reputation. 👍💪

Great trivia about Arnold here . Love his insight of the art of posing, the size game and more. .

Amazing interview. My brother in-law went to the 77 Mr. Olympia. He told me that Frank did not pump up back stage and instead had his own personal motor home he would pump up in. Not sure if he was pulling my leg. Has anyone ever heard this before? Franks right about how a big guy wins in most cases. I think that’s why Shawn Ray could never beat Dorian. If he was the same size (height wise) as Dorian it probably would have been a game changer.

I recall reading this as well in Muscle Builder Power magazine (this was what Muscle & Fitness magazine use to be called). It was part of what he discussed in this interview of staying away from everyone and being a mystery until showtime and then Wammo!

Frank did a seminar at our gym in Pa in the late 70s.
I got there early and went into the locker room. Frank was there wearing a dark blue sweatsuit getting ready for the seminar to begin.
He looked great, fairly wide shoulders & fit looking etc... but I remember thinking to myself “he’s very lean looking in his sweatsuit”...
I didn’t wanna look like I was staring but let’s face it when you’re in the locker room with Mr. Olympia you want to get a look lol...
To my surprise he took off his sweatsuit and changed into shorts and a muscle shirt... and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing...
Details everywhere, his abs, intercostals and serratus, just the most perfect physique I have ever seen from every angle... I was stunned.
You really had to see it to believe that someone who weighed less than 200 pounds could look like that incredible...
    What an amazing memory ...
