This is important to note because I think everyone would be benefited if people in charge (whatever authority position they are in) don’t see helping others as a side benefit for their reputation or whatever, but rather as the very principle that causes a cascade of increased productivity, economy, etc. Reduction in crime, reduction in social conflict, wars, etc. This connection would make it so people wouldn’t have to consider the “cons” of investing more to helping others, as it would always mean a benefit in the long term (Ik this may come off as pedantic, just wanted to share my thoughts)

We went from millions of ppl dying per day from a disease we didn't know how to treat, to a vaccine using tech the world had never seen before in a matter of years. If you look back at the 1700s, there were epidemics almost every year. And we were able to deploy it even to remote locations, even tho it was difficult, even tho it required a lot of ppl. We did all that in about 2-3 years, bc ppl worked together. It did build on some amazing science, but managing ALL THAT in that short amount of time, makes me hopeful that we can do this. And I truly believe young ppl have the unique job of having the drive and fire to fight, and reignite hope in the more cynical of us.

If you ever want to do a neat little historical dive, you should look up the history of those X-Ray trucks and New York, specifically how The Young Lords were so frustrated with how poorly (and frankly racistly) the service was operating, and co-opted one of the trucks to provide more testing. The city eventually just let them operate it, as they were getting more testing done in a week than the service had been doing per month. A really fascinating tale and an interesting intersection of where direct action and TB have crossed over before!
Edit for some more information: The New York Times has a piece dated June 18th, 1970 titled "THE YOUNG LORDS SEIZE X-RAY UNIT" about it, and about how they expanded it from operating from noon-6pm to operating from 9am-9pm, and about why they took these steps. The group is also in part responsible for the patient's bill of rights!

While he was working on the Project in the middle of the desert during WWII that would lead to the atom bomb, his wife was in a sanatorium many, many miles away. They both loved puzzles so they would write each other regularly - in code. Code that the reader would have to crack to be able to read the letter.

It is a testament to John and his work that, when I read earlier today that George Orwell died from TB, my thoughts were in sequence: dang that sucks, Everything comes back to TB, JUST LIKE JOHN GREEN SAID!

I think another interesting factor is, if we strengthen health care systems to deal better with tb, they will deal better with other diseases as well. Making x-rays available helps diagnosis of other stuff. Everything that isn't diagnosed as tb has already done the first step to be diagnosed as something else.

John, I remain at the intersection of anxiety and excitement! But I also have a lot of hope and optimism, which is sadly unusual for me, but I think it’s because I have so much belief and trust in Nerdfighteria and our friends at MSF Access, PIH, and elsewhere. Thank you for all your help with the newsletter!

The statistic about maternal mortality dropping by half in sierra leone since 2019 is ... genuinely mind boggling?? I had to go back and re-listen to you because I thought I had misheard. It feels like that should be a major news story

    Hi John,
I've been a nerdfighter since I was 11 (I am now soon to turn 21! Crazy!) and cannot say enough words about how much you and Hank have influenced my values and my life as I've grown up. Your work with tuberculosis is no exception. I am currently in my third year of university getting my undergrad in anthropology and will be doing my honours thesis likely on tuberculosis. My plans are to go on to do graduate work in the field of medical anthropology and I truly hope to be a part of the efforts to eradicate TB in my lifetime. I can never thank you enough for all that you and Hank have done, for me and my life, as well as for the global community.
