Breaking down alcohol drinking habits by decile is wild. The bottom 3 deciles drink nothing, with the next decile having one drink a year and the one after that having about 7 drinks a year. The top decile, however, consumes 73 drinks a week, which is more than half of all alcohol consumed in the country. So, one in ten people is drinking the equivalent of two bottles of wine or bit more than half a bottle of whiskey a day.

You should apply for a job with lower education requirements. You can make 70k a year with a high school degree doing labor at a dangerous factory. College is a scam unless you are going to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. Maybe a few other degrees.

    • @yurisei6732

@@andrewevenson2657 The catch is you have to work in a dangerous factory. There's a reason you can make 70k a year doing it despite it being low entry requirements - most people would rather make less money and keep more fingers. And college isn't really a scam so much as it is falsely advertised. If you go into it with a proper career plan and make good use of your time there, most degree choices are going to pay off - even degrees in humanities can. The problem is that so many people use university as basically a way to put off having to be an adult for three more years, and come out of it no more employable than they were after high school. If legally universities could only have 10% of their admissions be 18 or 19 year olds, it'd solve probably 80% of the problem. Make most people who go to university experience work first, so by the time they're able to get a degree, they've had the opportunity to think about where they'd like to be in the future and where higher education fits into that, if it fits at all.

(there are other options, which I hope is obvious, but your oversimplification is quite bad really.)

This brings to mind the story about the Air Force taking extensive measurements of their airmen/pilots and using averages of those to design the "ideal cockpit" which promptly caused a massive increase in plane crashes, because it turns out essentially no one is perfectly average, so a cockpit designed around the average body size fit exactly no one.

Of course when they actually had pilots test it every single one of them complained it was the most uncomfortable thing they'd ever been in because _nobody_ is average in every dimension and so everything was either too close or too far away.

It was a photographer's project (published in 1994) to go to a bunch of different countries, find the most average person/family he could, and then convince them to put all their stuff in their front yard for a photo (presumably with help moving things both in and out). The difference between the people in different countries was really stark... makes me wonder how things have changed since (...gosh...) 30 years ago.

Can we get a Hank response with the same breakdown of the average Nerdfighter based on the most recent nerdfighter census?

If Jessica pays the average amount of taxes, much of them state and local according to the on-screen note, then she mustn't live in Dallas-Fort Worth because Texas has no state taxes, and surely that would skew her number down.

Planet Money did an episode on the modal (that's not a misspelling) American. It was an excellent education in both statistics and demographics.

This video, ironically, gave me a little hope about my life situation because I am not, in fact, Jessica.
I'm not married. (Taking that as a win for me personally. Late twenties btw.) Household income is higher. I have more saved up for retirement. I have a much bigger savings. I have a zero-minute commute, WFH daily. I work not in those areas; I'm actually in book publishing. I have a BA. Voting in all elections (that I know about because my state loves to keep voters in the dark). [Thanks, Texas.] I drink no alcohol or coffee. I read about forty books a year. I don't go on social media that much. I spend more time outside, probably because I'm potty training a puppy at the moment. I also don't own a pickup truck, which is great cause I cannot see myself driving one well.
I mean, I have a long way to go still-no health insurance, for instance-but I feel like I've at least accomplished something. Which is good because I've been feeling like I haven't really accomplished almost anything in the past four years for a while now.
(We both sneeze though. That's good.)

I'm a few years older than Jessica, but the same height and weight. I am white, married, work in education, live in the suburban part of a major metropolitan area, have a dog, drink too much coffee and not enough water, and relate to a lot of Jessica's financial circumstances. I think that's about where the similarities end, but that's a lot more than I expected. And as a queer person and the owner of a uterus, I appreciate that Jessica supports my rights.
